Our first interactions were with Will who came to see our house and design the ideal system. He was very helpful and absolutely saved us by arranging for us to have two portable AC units installed for a couple of weeks while we waited for our system to be installed. It was so hot in our house and our kids weren't sleeping. Such a nice thing for them to provide AND to even set-up for us! We had 2-3 guys working at our house for most of a week. They were friendly and very hard working. I was amazed by all that they did, and much of it in an extremely hot attic. The system is set-up in our attic and comes in through the vents to the bedrooms. We also have a wall mount unit in our kitchen to heat and cool the downstairs. So far we are very happy with both systems. Previously we have had central heat/AC so this is different in that as you walk through the house you can really feel a difference in temp from room to room. However, since we're in such a mild climate now it makes sense not to have the entire house so cool and I appreciate the energy savings. Rather than piping AC to the hallways and bathrooms it is going where it is most needed. I also like how gentle and quiet the airflow is in the set-up with the ducts. Very happy with the service!
Description of Work: Removed old furnace and installed a 3 zone mini split system with two duct type (upstairs in bedrooms) and one wall-mount (kitchen).

The technician was very polite and professional. It does seems that every time you get any tune up or inspection, something else will be found that needs to be done. At that point, you either have to know a lot about the equipment (if so, you probably would have done the inspection yourself) or rely on the honesty of the vendor. The technician showed me, as best as my understanding would allow, what needed to be done. A couple were obvious, even to me. The permanent filter in the furnace was of poor quality and some of the plastic condensation pipes (high efficiency furnace, had been installed without glue holding them together. The air conditioner need Freon, not that unusual. He then suggested an optional item, a start up capacitor. His explanation seemed reasonable so I went ahead. So far everything seems to be working fine. The $85 I paid for the Big Deal is included in the $422.
Description of Work: I purchased a "Big Deal" for a furnace and AC inspection tune up. However, the inspection turned up a couple of things that needed to be done. We have been in the house a very short time.

You always wonder if specialists in household repairs are honest, but you just don't know. You have to trust that they are and that they are giving you the most efficient, cost effective solution (kind of like cars). Well that is Carini Heating and Air Conditioning - honest and trustworthy. Our air conditioner was broken during the hottest time this summer in San Diego. Thank goodness I got 3 estimates, and Angie's List led us to Carini. The other 2 companies were going to charge us a brand new unit, stating that the unit was completely shot. The prices ranged from $5200 - $6100! The Salesman for Carini, Will Fredette, came by for his assessment. Yes, he was a sales guy! He took one look at it, for no longer than 10 minutes and said, this unit isn't completely broken it just needs to be repaired. Then came in Anthony, the Carini repair guy. He was so cordial and I was very comfortable with him. He called me stating that he was running a few minutes late (yes, only a few minutes). And then within 2 hours he had our unit up and running. We thank both Will and Anthony and Carini for holding such high standards, honesty and integrity. We have told everybody we can about Carini!

Anthony from Carini showed up on time to service our AC unit. He quickly evaluated the system, explained everything to me and fixed the various problems with the system, as well as address some other issues that needed attention. Anthony was extremely professional, very personable and an expert in his field. He fixed a previous contractor's mistake and the AC system is working better than ever!!! I would highly recommend Carini and their service team to anyone needing HVAC services for their home. I love the family-oriented approach, expertise and fair pricing.

I do NOT like leaving a bad review, but this experience was so weird I feel I have to.... The salesman never showed up for our appointment. 3 hours after the appointed time, *I* called Carini and couldn't get through, left a message. Was eventually called back by the salesman - someone gave him the wrong phone number (as I originally contacted Carini through Angies list, they could have emailed me or at least ATTEMPTED to contact me, but did not). Salesman was going to try to come out Saturday AM, would call back to confirm. Never called back, but DID show up. Then tried to strong arm me into buying a heat pump system with some wall-mount AC in every room??? As I have had heat pump systems in the past, made it clear I did NOT want one - dual zone AC please. Salesman absolutely refused to budge, would not even discuss what I wanted. Also had no literature on this system. "Heat pumps have improved! It's a completely new technology!". Then told me I had to email HIM to get his quote. I stated I would NOT. He can email or mail me a quote. He repeated again and again I have to email HIM. At which point I thanked him for his time and showed him the door. 2 weeks later, I am unsurprised to report that I have not received a quote OR any further contact with Carini. Absolutely the most BIZARRE experience with a service provider in my life. Will not be going with Carini.
Description of Work: Based on the Angie's list reviews, contacted Carini to quote us a new dual zone AC system.

's, Terribly. My malfunctioning Compressor Unit was pumped full of freon, with no concern for my system, its probable leaking status, which is an AC Business unethical No-No. then he tried to sell me an unnecessary Snake Oil after market hard start capacitor for about 7 times market value. Better units have them, thats why they have longer warranties. Really? Perhaps better units cost more because they have higher EER's and better overall build quality, not just start capacitors.
Description of Work: Came by to do a 22 point AC inspection. Instead, serviced one of my two Outside AC units for low refrigerant charge, telling me I had a possible leak. Rather than offer to search for the leak or continue with the inspection of my system, He made it obvious he didn't have the time, and that it was the end of the Air Conditioning season anyway. We just had a big heat wave this week, so I guess his prediction that early September is the end of the Cooling Season was a bit premature. So he pumped my unit full of $300 Worth of coolant, and didn't inspect anything. Next, tried to sell me a $256 Hard start capacitor for each of my new AC Compressor Units. Its a 521 After market Capacitor that sell for about $30 on Amazon. Why do I need that, I asked? Because your manufacturer did not put one in your Unit. Why, I asked? Because its cheaper model, He replied. This will extend your compressors life by helping it start more quickly. I replied that my units have Copeland Scroll Compressors, which have low start inertia, and low start pressures, thus present the motor with a very low load at start up, so only need a run capacitor. Did I mention I have a degree in Phsyics from Annapolis? I still recommend the Capacitors. Its something Carini does to get in and get out, And make a quick $500 off of our customers complete ignorance. I would put Carini on your DO NOT USE LIST. They are not looking to fix your system, only to line their pockets at your expense.

Response from Carini Home Services
We've seen this before, occasionally we run into the customer who expects to be taken advantage of before we even walk through the front door. The thing I have a problem with is all the assumptions and "predictions" this customer makes. The customer stated "The Technician made it obvious he didn't have time, and it was the end of the Air Conditioning season anyway" and " We just had a big heat wave this week, so I guess his prediction that early September is the end of cooling Season was a bit premature". These statements are both false and untrue. That's ridiculous to assume, we do this for a living and know the season can last even into November. The price we charge for refrigerant is industry standard and our technicians always recommend a leak detection when a system is low on refrigerant. A leak detection can take several hours and needs an additional visit. The amount of time required has to be scheduled in on a day we have more time to investigate. I'm sorry we couldn't stay but I'm sure you would be even more upset if we stayed and charged you an overtime call to find the leak. It's interesting you didn't mention that we offered you a return visit to find the leak and you refused. When our technicians check your system they test the "Run Capacitors (RC)" and if they are performing under manufacturer voltage we always recommend replacement. If the RC is put under a significant load (Hot Summer Day) and is under performing it can fail right in the middle of the hottest day. We recommend replacing this to prevent you from being uncomfortable at the worst times. There are many other reasons to add a hard start kit other than than ones you've stated. There are voltage reasons, refrigerant load reasons, we only make recommendations that can prevent this system from failing when you need it the most. Its unfair of you to bully the technician with your superior intellect when he's is only trying to help you out so you don't run into issues when you need your system most. And lets be honest here, the $30 part is not what you are paying for, the bulk of your service call is related to labor, insurance, truck costs, office expenses, ect.. I wish companies had an Angie's List so we could put this customer on a DO NOT SERVICE LIST. I apologize if you "feel" you've be taken advantage of but if you look though Angie's List you are the only customer to ever have had this problem with us. Don't you think maybe your being a bit harsh with your assumptions? We are an honest family run business and we don't appreciate our integrity being challenged. Next time call one of the 1-800 companies and see how they treat you. I have a sneaky suspicion you'll have a hard time finding any company that you'll feel comfortable with if we didn't. Good Day Gabriel Carini CEO

Carini was one of several bids for replacing our whole system which was 17 years old. Needed new A/C and furnace. Not the highest or lowest bid (they were all fairly close) but the equipment (Bryant) seemed a bit better than the others offered. Its hard to get reliable reviews on A/C equipment, much to my surprise. Had a bit of trouble with scheduling, although to be fair everyone in town was booked at this time. Once that got straightened out, and they did provide some incentive for the problem, it went smoothly. Two man crew, one full day. They did cover the flooring, although a bit hard as everything had to go in a very small attic space. Took all day, as they had said. One installer was obviously an apprentice. But, his supervisor checked everything (I listened) and then another senior supervisor came in the late afternoon to check on everything. Pretty confident in the installation. They removed all the old equipment and cleaned up well, vacuuming the floors, too. Works perfectly now - although haven't tested the furnace yet.

When he was headed towards the attic, I advised of an intermittent "thrumming" sound - He found a bow in the unit which seems to indicate that it was either dropped or sat on during installation. He attempted to re-secure the fan (which was causing the vibration) Thanks to him, I will be contacting the original contractor to address the issue.

It went really well. Anthony spent quite a bit of time talking to me about my system. He put on his protective booties every time he entered the house. As he added refrigerant he explained that my system was low and how to watch out for leaks. He showed me several other parts of my HVAC system that would tell me if there was a problem. We had used the AC last year and noticed it wasn't as effective as we expected. After the service, it runs 100% better. Anthony also advised me to periodically run the system to keep the it in good running shape. There was only one issue. I had purchased the $85 system check, but when Anthony showed up he informed me that because I had 2 systems they would have to charge me for the second system. They were correct and were nice enough to apply the discount to the other system. This was my mistake in not buying 2 discount inspections. I was very impressed with Carini's and Anthony. My system is running at full capacity and we are very happy with the service. My only advice is find out how many systems you have and buy the like amount of coupons. Beyond that everything was cool with the service. Pun intended.
Description of Work: They did the advertised 22 point inspection on both of my HVAC systems. They added refrigerant to both of the systems. The tech, Anthony, spent time explaining and showing me possible problem areas and what things look like when the systems are operating correctly.
