Brett Custom Painting

March 15, 2014 We contracted with Brett Custom Painting on 16 October 2013 to paint our new wood entry door and to prepare and paint the wood siding on our first floor They arrived on time and busily began sanding and prepping the wood siding. Andy Brett had to leave to get his computer repaired. We noticed that his crew was leaning their ladders on our new grape stake fence and asked them not to do so. The said OK. Things seemed to be going well so we left them to their work. When we returned late that afternoon, they had left for the day. When we examined their work we were quite dismayed. Apparently they had spun a ladder around near the grape stake fence and left an arc shaped gouge in it. There were also multiple paint drips on the new brick walkway. Around back, there were paint foot prints all over our hardwood deck, and many deep scratches in the deck where they had drug their ladders across the deck. When we talked to Brett that evening we told him that we did not want that crew back on our property and agreed to meet with him the following morning. The next morning Brett arrived and saw what we told him about and agreed that it was poor workmanship. He said that he would assign his crew to a less demanding assignment and that over time he would finish the work personally. We agreed upon this approach. Brett did show up in a few days and spray painted our new front door and told us to not have it mounted for at least 3 weeks so the paint could cure properly. Then after repeated calls to schedule the rest of the work, Andy Brett said that he was having family issues and would not be able to complete the job. So we decided to just do the painting ourselves. It was at this point that we discovered that his crew had also sanded the galvanization off of the metal siding corners, which makes the steel corners very vulnerable to major rusting. We had spent a great deal of time preparing and priming those very same corners just a few weeks earlier. An exasperated call to Andy Brett to find new metal corners went unanswered. We have not heard from him since. The final straw was discovered when the new front door was mounted. The exterior paint marred ("burnished") very easily. Consultation with other painting experts concluded that the mixture that Brett used was too thick and literally dried on contact, leaving the surface as a host of tiny dried dots that did not adhere well to each other or to the door surface.
