Some walls in my house had water damage due to a pipe bursting in the walls. Bill Howe did the plumbing repair, therefore they were well aware and had detailed knowledge of exactly which walls etc. were damaged. When it came time to restore the walls (ie fix the damage after the plumbing repair), Bill Howe quoted me over $8,000 to do the repair. I was very shocked by the price because it was 2-3 times the amount my insurance adjustor had estimated after a very detailed investigation. At first I thought my insurance adjustor was making the error but he assured me he had been generous in the assessment, showing me that his estimate had included 2-3 coats of paint, etc. So I decided to get a few more estimates from three other licensed contractors. I was shocked to find that the other contractors quoted a price range from $2,000 - $2,500. The quotes were consistent between the 3 different contractors and included 2-3 coats of paint as well as the dry wall repairs etc. After becoming more educated, I found Bill Howe wanted to "fix" things that were not damaged whatsoever. I can only assume they knew what was damaged since they did the plumbing work. For example Bill Howe's estimate included re-painting the family room even though the damage to the walls was way down the hall in the laundry room. I am shocked and appalled by Bill Howe's business practice of gross over estimating/charging. Even if I could have negotiated down the things that did not need repairing, I could never trust a company with such gross over-estimations. Had I been less diligent, they could have easily scammed me out of several thousands of dollars for things that were not in need of any repair.
Description of Work: Note: that the grade of F is for Bill Howe's estimate for "restoration". My walls had damage from a pipe bursting in the walls. The estimate that Bill Howe gave me was to restore the damaged ares (ie drywall repair and repaint etc).

Called Bill Howe Plumbing at 8am. By 8:45, Mike had arrived and was assessing the situation. It took him close to two hours to find the problem and fix it - but then, nothing is ever easy in two-story homes which are approaching their hundredth birthday! Mike was pleasant and courteous, and cleaned up after himself efficiently. No complaints.

They let us know that this would need to be processed as two separate calls because the person working the plumbing would not be the person checking the central air unit. This was fine since they could come out at the same time. Unfortunately, the guy coming out for the central air unit was given the wrong date and showed up a day early. However, he was right on time, so no biggie. He discovered that the line from where the gas meter "should" be to the house was cut and capped outside the house and the line in the house was capped and sealed. It appears the owner/builder of the house decided he didn't need the gas line. We would need to have a new line run from the meter location to the central air unit. He quoted me around $4000 for that. The quote provided us with the details of the work required and what we needed to get SDG&E out to install a new meter. The guy for the plumbing came out as scheduled and pulled the girlfriend's hair out of the shower drain rather quickly. He found that kitchen pipes did not meet with the main and remained the same size as it ran out to the septic tank, which was installed WAY out in our back field. He confirmed that the original installation was done very poorly, likely by someone who didn't know plumbing. He was able to clear the grease clog, but because of how the line is run, we will probably end up having to have the pipes rerun to prevent further issues. Both men were very helpful in answering questions about this circus of a plumbing system we have. Overall, I'm satisfied with the work done.
Description of Work: Shower drain and kitchen sink were clogged. Needed an estimate for having a new central heat and air unit connected.

We had a gas leak affecting our stove that resulted in SDG&E shutting off our meter until remediation. Our house is on a concrete slab so it's difficult to diagnose and repair a good part of the old line. Doug, one of their senior gas techs, came out and very thoughtfully diagnosed the situation. He also considered multiple alternatives for repiping in terms of where to run the lines, and came up with the least intrusive and expensive plan. Once that was determined, he quietly and competently went about his work for two and a half days including all of Xmas eve until 5pm. Bill Howe was very professional, very high quality. A little pricey but I'd use Doug again with no complaints - he got the job done, courteously and right. This was a very serious issue and Doug gave us great service and peace of mind, as did the whole Bill Howe operation.

I am very happy with the work Tyler did including the diagnostic work, the preventative maintenance, and the extra work I requested. He was punctual, efficient, and professional. He kept to his original estimate for cost and time. He went beyond the normal by explaining to me the details I wanted to know about the work he was doing but also about other areas of his expertise. Everything that he worked on is working beautifully. I will definitely call Bill Howe Plumbing when I need a good plumber in the future.
Description of Work: My kitchen sink faucet and bathroom sink had slow leaks. My home is rather old and so is the plumbing. My husband had fixed these areas as much as he could be we felt we needed a plumber to address the new leaks. Tyler from Bill Howe Plumbing came out on my day off to diagnose the problems and give me an estimate of cost and time required. He called prior to arriving and was punctual. I wanted to purchase the parts at AO Reed and he gave me a detailed list of what I needed to purchase. I spent almost $400. on the parts including a very nice kitchen faucet. Tyler returned a week later, at my convenience, to perform the work. He replaced the kitchen faucet, replaced the old parts with new braided cables, and cleaned the kitchen sink surface so that it looked beautiful. He then rerouted the drain under the bathroom sink, replacing the parts that were very old and ready to have problems. Both my husband and I were very impressed with his work skills and knowledge. I asked him to look at the toilet which also had a problem. Because that was not in the original estimate (of time) he had to return later in the day to work on that. He diagnosed the problem as a low water level and explained what work needed to be done and why. He replaced the angle stop, the riser and the ballcock for the bathroom toilet. He let me know what he was doing and why he was doing it with every fixture. Some of the work was to replace old plumbing that will eventually fail due to it's age and inefficiency and I am happy to prevent new problems. Tyler was also able to educate me in other areas of plumbing for my old home such as how to turn off the water at the main when we are out of town and how to turn it back (slowly during 30 seconds). I called to have him return a few days later when I was concerned about the faucet. I received a calll prior to him returning to let me know he was on his way. He was prompt, as usual. Tyler looked at the faucet and made a minor adjustment and snugged up the faucet. There was no charge for the return call.

My experience at Bill Howe Plumbing was comprised of interactions with Jaime at the office, and both plumbing techs Justin and Patrick. From consultation to payment, the process was fluid. They came out to snake my main line, ran a camera at our request, and found that my main line had roots and was offset. I opted to proceed with an epoxy lining (13 feet of lining, lifetime non-transferrable warranty, btw) and the actual job spanned just two days. Justin and his partner Patrick were communicative, professional, and willing to assist. At no time did I feel spoken down to, disrespected, even with the million questions I had. The whole process was almost too easy, and that?s okay with me. Good job Jaime, Justin, and Patrick.
Description of Work: Bill Howe installed a double cleanout in my front yard, lined approximately 13 feet of main line with epoxy (which was offset and had roots).

Viktor found the problem was in the tank itself and fixed the leak by installing some new parts. He showed us what he had done and told us if there continued to be problems, he'd come back and fix the problem. Two days later, the toilet leaked again, We called Victor and he came back within hours of our call. It turns out the hose from the toilet to the wall was also leaking. Victor replaced the hose. He did not charge us for the labor for the second visit. We only paid for the hose. We have not had a problem since. We would definitely use Bill Howe Plumbing again. So far, we think the company, at least as represented by Victor, is professional, very courteous, experienced, and fair.
Description of Work: This was the second time we used Bill Howe Plumbing. The first time was a year ago when we had an emergency when our bath faucet came off while the water was running. We had no way to shut the water off without turning off the water to the entire condo complex. We quickly checked Angies List and found BIll Howe Plumbing. They responded to us right away and sent a plumber named Victor to fix the problem. He came within the hour and fixed the problem. We were definitely impressed with how fast they responded in an emergency. So we already had a good feeling about the company. Even though their prices were a bit high, we knew we had found a company we could use again. The second time we used them, our toilet was leaking water onto the bathroom floor and it wasn't clear where the water was leaking from. We called Bill Howe Plumbing and requested Victor again. Victor came the next day and fixed the problem. Once again, he was professional, friendly, and clearly explained the problem to us.

My husband had attempted to fix the problem with a snake but without luck. It was the day before Thanksgiving and the first few plumbers we called were not available. One plumber suggested we call Bill Howe. We did and they promised to come between 8-11. At 8 the plumber arrived and found where the clean out pipe was located. He fixed the clog which was far out toward the street and determined it was due to "flushable" wipes not really being flushable. The problem was solved quickly and the plumbing has been working great since. Overall it couldn't have gone better.

The plumber was prompt and got the job done in no time. There didn't appear to be any stalling in an attempt to make the job go longer than need be.
Description of Work: I was renovating my kitchen and broke the knob off my cold water shut-off valve, which happened on a Saturday afternoon. My new cabinets were scheduled to be installed the following Monday morning, so I had to finish demolishing the kitchen, repairing the drywall, and painting before then. Of the six places I checked out on Angie's List, Bill Howe Plumbing was the only place still open on a Saturday afternoon. They came out within a few hours of calling them; however, there weekend rates are really steep at $202.00 per hour plus parts.

Overall, we are very satisfied with the entire experience with Bill Howe plumbing and Andrew in particular. We chose Bill Howe because of the Angie's List history and because several years ago, we had them epoxy coat all internal water lines with a process called Ace Duraflow. We were very happy then with that product and their installation. This project was pretty expensive but Andrew did clearly indicate the hourly rate and I wasn't surprised that the whole job took 6.5 hours. Hopefully, we're good for another 25 years.
Description of Work: We discovered a water leak coming from near the garage and running down the edge of the driveway. This is in the vicinity of where the water service enters the house. Bill Howe was called and an appointment was made for Monday morning, Nov 12, between 8 and 11AM. We received a call that morning about 10:30 that they were running a little late. The plumber, Andrew, arrived about 11:15. The leak was determined to be in the service to the house and not the house itself. The service runs from the meter at the sidewalk under the driveway and connects to the house near the driveway. Andrew gave me the option to call in a specialized crew to use equipment that can isolate the location of the leak to within about 1 foot or he could dig down and attempt to find it. The specialized crew would cost about $245 extra [as I remember]. From where the leak appears very near the garage, we decided to let Andrew dig down and, hopefully, find and correct the leak. Several hours later after jackhammering out some brick and digging out much wet clay, the leak was discovered in one of the plastic couplings about 18 in below and 2 feet under the driveway. Andrew successfully removed and replaced the defective coupling and reconnected the water service. Due to the collected water leeching from the clay, the area had to be kept dry to allow the new coupling adhesive to cure [my job with a ShopVac after Andrew left for the day]. Andrew returned Tuesday morning, Nov 13, verified no further leaks and refilled the hole with sand [I provided] and the removed soil [clay]. Andrew did a very good job of cleaning up the area.

A pipe broke in our main bathroom shower, behind the wall of the on/off handle. We didn't know anything had happened until we noticed water pouring into a downstairs room. This was on a Saturday, and we were very worried that it would cost a lot of money to get repaired. We called Bill Howe Plumbing and they were very responsive and very considerate to our problem. The repairman showed up on time and he was very courteous, clean and professional. The repair was fixed within the time specified, and the area where the work was performed was cleaned up properly. For plumbing work that was done on a Saturday, at the spur of the moment, really didn't cost as much as we had anticipated. Very affordable for a job well done! We will definitely call Bill Howe plumbing for all our plumbing needs in the future, and we will recommend them to all our friends!

Bill Howe personnel were responsive when contacted. They helped with suggestions on containing the leak during the weekend so that we would not incur extra costs (the nature of the leak made it possible to wait for a day). Their estimate was fair and the quality of their work was very good. The person assigned was very competent and knowledgeable.
Description of Work: Find the source of leak in the garage and repair the leak. The hot water line was leaking under the slab and water was seeping into the garage. Bill Howe performed a leak detection and gave a quote for re-routing the leaky line. They performed the re-route after approval.

Description of Work: We had a plumbing problem related to our irrigation system and a "water hammer" issue. They made a timely appointment with us and resolved the issue. Very professional and friendly. The second time we used them, about a week later, we had a sewer back up in the evening and they got somebody out to help us after being sure we were clear on the extra cost of having them come off hours. Brendan did an excellent job. My home is about 30 years old and so I have had all kinds of repairfolks here for one thing or another over the years. I can't recall anyone who was more professional, knowledgable or courteous than Brendan was. He did not push unnecessary services ( Leak detection was not needed in my case and he totally agreed), everything was upfront and above board. There is no doubt that the next time I have a plumbing, heating or AC issue, I will call Bill Howe. Usually when I write Angie's List reviews I am pretty critical but fair. I honestly have nothing to report that was critical in this case. The cost was a lot of money but it was pretty fair for a slab leak. In most cases you can expect a slab leak repair to be at least $1200.00. Anyway, customer service goes a long way and I was more than satisfied with Bill Howe's service. Excellent Job!!!
Description of Work: I had a slab leak. I called Bill Howe and was given an acceptable window of time of when I could expect a technician to arrive. Prior to the technician's arrival, I received a call from the company informing me that the technician was on his way as well as the name of the tech. I appreciated the follow up call. The tech arrived and evaulated the job, explained to me what work needed to be performed, explained the pricing as well as about how long the job would take. He then proceeded to perform the work taking time to answer several questions that I had as well as explain what he was doing as the work progressed. I had had a prior slab leak about ten years ago in the same spot and the tech explained that the prior work was done fairly well. He showed me the new repair and it was above and beyond what the Drain Patrol guys did ten years ago. I should not have to worry about any more slab leaks. I was very pleased with the service

The technician arrived on time, same day, and was very professional. He found the problem after an hour and change - a broken thermostat wire in the attic, which took a few minutes to fix. We are happy with the service but felt we were overcharged a great deal for a minor problem that apparently is quite common.
