Took almost two months to get this started. The owner sent someone else to do the work but didn't tell me -- was a big shock. Makes me sick remembering what a bad experience this was, and my first as a homeowner contracted job. When the electrical outlet was finished, he used an extra large cover that does not match existing outlets. For the fans, it was not explained that large holes needed to be cut into the drywall and was my responsibility to call someone else to patch. The under cabinet kitchen lights were supposed to be LED, but when he arrived he said the kitchen lights and the canned recessed lights were on back order. In the upper kitchen cabinets, he switched out white cables for black cable lines which looked terrible against the inside white cabinets. He spent half the day in the kitchen. When he left, there were bare wires hanging out of the wall above the sink and said he'd return once the lights were in. Never received a call back. I didn't noticed he placed puck lights under the cabinets until I hired another electrician several months later and they were not LEDs. Got taken advantage of big time and didn't realize it until almost a year later.
Description of Work: Gave quote for replacing kitchen under cabinet lights, 3 bathrooms with Panasonic fans, upgraded recessed lights. Installed outlet for electric access next to toilet.

Thank you Martin, Miguel and Mike! You guys did an awesome job! We have a 1912 craftsman bungalow with existing knob and tube wiring. Beck Electric rewired the whole house and garage plus a lot of additional add ons and changes. Miguel was very informative and had very good foresight given that we were also doing a bathroom remodel and future kitchen remodel. Life is great with new GFCI's!

His rates were reasonable. He was able to look at the big picture and come up with ideas of ways to do things that were more efficient and more economical given the long term plans that we had. He and his people were very professional and their work was very clean. There were no loose wires and everything was done very cleanly. They cleaned up every day and didn't leave anything where it was in a state of disarray. Everything was orderly and he made the installation of the wiring almost transparent. We plan to use them again for additional work.

I called 2 different electric companies to perform this work. One gave me a quote sight unseen over the phone for $238. The other said they had to come out to look at the project to give me a quote. The visit for this company was scheduled for today but I had mistakenly had yesterday as the day on my calendar. So when I thought they should have been at my house and didn't show up. I hired first company. The 1st company called (the one I thought was giving me the quote but was really the one who I hired) to tell me they were on their ways after Beck arrived so I told them I didn't need them. When Beck arrive I had assumed they were the first company I had already hired since I didn't remember the name. So after Sergio looked over the work he told me the price would be $300 because of the distance. I figured the estimate might change and I told him to do the work. Sergio did a fabulous job running the outlet and installing the outlet without having to cut any dry walls. When he was done I was going to give him my American Express card and he told me there would be a 5% charge. I told him I was never told that when I talked about payment over the phone not realizing that this was not the company I thought I hired. Sergio immediately contacted the owner, Marty, who immediately called me back. By that time I had realized what had happened. Surprisingly, even though I admitted the confusion was my fault Marty offered to only charge me what the other company wanted to charge me. That's what I call GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. However, because it was my fault and because Sergio did such a good job I paid the full amount. Beck Electric is well worth the money and I would hire them again in a heartbeat.

Martin was very helpful on the phone, he spec'ed out the details by asking me questions about the job/house and gave me a very fair quote compared to his competitors. His men showed up right on time and were extremely professional. I watched them run the lines and saw that they were very detail oriented and obviously knew what they were doing. Results were very clean and exactly what I wanted (minus my own miscommunication but it's been worked around). Would definitely recommend them and use them again in the future.

Tech arrived late because the boss gave him the wrong address. However, he called me to let me know he was going to be late. He also called me earlier in the day to ask me which kind of switches I had in my property (rental) so he could be sure to have the same style on hand. He also helped me save a little money by letting me go to Home Depot to get a special part needed, instead of charging me the time for him to go. During my absence he continued working. He seemed to like his job and was in a good mood. I don't like having ill-tempered people in my house, but he was the kind who whistles while he works.

Install was very smooth. Martin Beck called SDG&E to make sure I didn't have to replace the underground wire to the panel before the work was started. The electrician came on the day and time arranged, removed and replaced the panel. My stucco guy really liked the way the electrician prepared the panel for him. I will use Beck Electric again without hesitation.
Description of Work: I needed the electrical panel upgraded for solar panel installation and some home remodeling. The cost of the panel upgrade was $1950, but it cost an additional $135 because the solar company wanted a 150 amp main breaker instead of a 200 amp main breaker.

I paid him for the service call and had him install a new outlet and he was off in no time and I paid him for the service call.
Description of Work: A wall outlet went dead and I thought it had to do with a fuse or shorted outlet. I used my meter and there was no electricity but it was strange that no other switch or outlet was affected. The fuse box looked fine also. The service person came and immediately told me the wall switch was in the OFF position that controled the outlet. When he turned the switch on the outlet worked. The mystery is how did the switch get turned OFF? Then I recalled I was napping in the nearby cot and hit a hanging picture fell. When the picture fell it must have hit the switch. It made me look dumb and I was "impressed" the technician solved the problem the moment he arrived.

Obtaining this referral from Angie's list, I called and talked to Mr. Beck, the firm's owner/manager. I was quoted a price of approximately $100 minus the Angie's list 20% discount plus materials. The sockets were $33.00 and the 35 watt lamps were $15.00 for a total of $48 for materials. I indicated that I had over 3 spare halogen lamps already and that 2 of the 3 current lamps tested as working like new. I was then told that I should still purchase new lamps to use with the three new sockets since they go together. (I have contacted several qualified individuals who stated they seriously doubt this assertion.) I went ahead and paid for the three new lamps. When I asked about replacing several of my halogen lamps with LED's, the Beck Electric electrician strongly advised I do so. When he repeated this recommendation two more times I began to feel somewhat pressured. When the electrician was finished (I estimate taking less than 30 minutes) he stated he left his paper-work in his truck, and took 5 to 10 minutes retrieving it. The total bill (1 hour Labor ) $137.50, plus $48.00 for materials added to $185.50, minus $37.10 for Angie's list discount, yielding a final total of $148.40. This amount, with the discount, seemed reasonable. When I was called later this month by Mr. Beck for an evaluation of the work, I indicated it was good. The lights have worked well since the repair. Then, I told him that my only problem was with his stated labor costs. The first half hour, which included transportation time, was priced at $190.00 per hour, to yielded a cost of $95.00 for the first thirty minutes, which, for me, was somewhat unreasonable. When I explained by feelings about this hourly rate for the first half hour, Mr. Beck argued with me that the first half hour rate was only $95.00. I tried to explain that at $95 for 30 minutes is actually an hourly rate of $190.00 per hour. Still not agreeing, he insisted his rate for the first half hour was only $95.00. Obviously, his second 30 minutes, priced at $42.50, is an hourly rate of $85.00, that might be considered more reasonable. All in all, though the work done was good. However, I had three issues with this firm: (1) in answer to my inquiry about the cost for replacing halogen with an LSD lights, I felt somewhat pressured by the electrician urging me three times to replace my 10 halogen lights with LSD's; (2) the possibly misleading pricing on the invoice; and (3) the argument I got into, over what hourly RATES were implied for his first and second half hour's labor, left me feeling rather distrustful of this firm. I certainly would NOT use them again, nor would I recommend them to any who may ask.

Response from BECK ELECTRIC & DATA SERVICES INC
Dear Angie's list member. Your concern #1: My technician repeatingly suggested the use of LED MR16 lamps due to the fact that the regular MR16 halogen lamps that you are using get extremely hot. Heat is the greatest enemy of electrical equipment. If you would use LED lamps, you would never have a problem with your fixture sockets again, save electricity, and do something good to our blue planet. Your concern #2: We ALWAYS inform our customers of our charge up front, before we schedule any appointments. Our rates are 95.00 dollars for the travel to your door including the first 30 minutes of work. Every additional 30 minutes of work is 42.50 dollars. Our hourly rate is 85.00 dollars. NOT 190.00 dollars. I have not the foggiest idea how you came with that amount. 95.00 dollars and 42.50 dollars are 137.50 dollars. You agreed to these charges before we scheduled. Our rates are also clearly stated on our website. It took my tech one hour replacing the sockets due to the fact that the socket conductors were burned short and that it was not easy to reconnect the new sockets to the burned short conductors. Again, this problem could be eliminated in the future with the use of LED lamps, which do not get hot. In addition we did a trip to our supplier prior to going to your residence purchasing special heat resistance porcelain connectors and the new sockets and spend additional time getting in out of your high rise building, checking in with the receptionist and carrying material, tools and a ladder in and out. No way that my tech could have had another hand to carry his invoice folder. Your concern #3: I am sorry that you felt rather distrustful of our firm. I do not recall having an agreement with you ever. I do not argue with my customers ever. I choose to go home happy rather than going home right. I am looking forward to provide you with outstanding customer service in the future. Martin Beck

I called Martin to schedule an estimate to install a 220 outlet for my electric dryer. Martin called in advance to make sure I was home and confirmed our appointment. He arrived and was very professional and friendly. Martin provided an estimate that was half the other competitor's estimate. I am still waiting for one more estimate before I decide. Beck Electric is now my go to electrician. After having them do several jobs at both home and my business, I wouldn't consider using anyone else. All of his electricians have been professional, clean and courteous. Highly recommend.

I have never been disappointed with an Angie's list service provider. But I was with this company. I made an appointment for an estimate for a few electrical issues we were having at our home. The gentleman said he would arrive around 1/1:30pm. At 1pm he called to say that he was waiting on an inspector at another site and shouldn't be later than 2:30pm. I said no problem. At 3:00pm he called to say he was on his way, but his gps battery had died and could I give him directions. I asked where he was and he said downtown San Diego! I live in the Encinitas area! Leaving downtown SD at 3pm going north would take forever and he didn't have a GPS, didn't know the area at all and trying to give him the back roads over the phone was too much. He wasn't even sure where Encinitas was!!! I told him to forget it. He was unapologetic about the inconvenience to me. I wasted a day, waiting patiently for this guy and he didn't really want the job anyway. All he had to do was tell me that and I would have picked another one from Angie's list. So, I give a big 'thumbs down' to this very unprofessional, yet A-list company.

Dear Angie's List member. I called you before running late that day and apologized immidiantelly. I was on my way to your residence when I spoke with you the second time at 2:30PM and only asked for some directions. I used to live in Oceanside and certainly know where Encinitas is located. We serve the entire county of San Diego for 11 years. Again I am sorry for any inconvenience. We aim to arrive on time and always call before running late and communicate with our customers. When Martin first came out for the estimate, I could tell right away he was knowledgeable. I pretty much knew what I wanted from the start, but was able to work the the details with him of the things I was unsure about. After agreeing to the estimate, Martin and Miguel came out and started working on time. Miguel did most of the work and Martin would come by and make sure things were up to his standards. They dealt well with the few minor change orders I had and did a great job overall. The wiring is very clean and professional and Miguel did a good job of cleaning up everyday. I will definitely call Martin when it is time to add A/C to the house!

Florescent lights are horrible, yet they were installed by the builder per code. Who knew you have to replace the entire fixture when they install 4 pin fixtures? Beck was replacing those fixtures and installing dimmer switches when I asked if they could replace the five loud exhaust fans. They told me about some big Panasonic exhaust fans that move more air and are much quieter. That was then added to the job. Mr. Beck, the owner, personally made the estimate, ordered parts, and checked the work. He was very prompt. Very nice work and good advice. My only regret is that I didn't listen to him about the placement of one new light fixture.

Owner Martin Beck came to my newly-purchased 1959 house and did a lengthy walkthrough, then a detailed bid proposal. I liked the fact he was empathetic to my request for the house to be up to code and to pass City inspection. The previous owner had installed a new service panel but never had it inspected, and the panel had some issues that needed to be resolved prior to an inspection. The house also had three-prong outlets installed without grounds, ceiling fans installed without metal boxes to contain the wiring, and no GFCI outlets in kitchen or bathrooms. Certain circuits also had too many outlets on them. Bottom line, I wanted the house to be a bit safer electrically before I moved in. Beck's employee John actually did the proposed work on the house. He handled the job in a very professional manner, all the while being nice enough (and patient enough) to thoroughly explain what he was doing when I asked questions. In all, the level of communication with the customer was excellent and I was kept informed of progress or changes from beginning to end. A good experience overall, and I would recommend this company to others.
Description of Work: Brought service panel up to code, which included wrapping exposed wiring, installing a new ground for the house (since old one could not be traced), strapping down conduit, replacing inadequate breakers, and making sure such work passed city inspection. Other work included installation of a new ceiling fan and switch, several dedicated grounded circuits for major appliances and for bathrooms, ground fault circuit receptacles in kitchen and baths, and retrofitting non-grounded three-prong outlets back to two-prong outlets (by my request). The job took about five days to complete.
