During the initial visit, the gas was not on and so Mr. Lewis could not assess the function of the furnace, stove, oven and water heater. He returned later and made a verbal report that those appliances were functioning. Mr. Lewis did identify a number of issues in the home; however he did miss some very important issues that I thought should have been caught. As soon as I walked into the kitchen, I smelled a mold smell. I was able to locate it in one of the cabinets. This cabinet is against a wall that is shared with the powder room. Mr. Lewis reported that the hot water was not on in the powder room. I went into the powder room and opened the valve and the hot water worked fine. However, I also noticed that the floor had been torn up around the pedestal sink and sections of the baseboard had been replaced around the sink. I can't help but wonder if this is related to the mold smell, and will find out when the contractor I have hired tears all of this apart. None of this was in Mr. Lewis' report. Also, there is no lighting in the kitchen. None. There are switches for lights, but no lights. This was not in Mr. Lewis' report. Next, the shower in the master bathroom was installed poorly and did not drain -- water pools on the shower floor. Also, there is no heater vent in the master bathroom (the contractor I have hired subsequently found one under the vanity, and this can be fixed). these items were not in Mr. Lewis' report. Finally, the fireplace is not safe to use. The previous owner altered the fireplace wall in such a way that the entire wall has to be demolished and rebuilt. There is a wood stove in the fireplace, and insufficient clearance around the wood stove. There is charred wood on the top of the fireplace opening. The chimney/fireplace inspector told me that the wood stove got much too hot for the space it is located. It could be made safe, but would require extensive alteration. None of this information was in Mr. Lewis' report. I am very unhappy to discover these things on my own.
Description of Work: John Lewis performed the home inspection that was needed during the process of a home sale. I was buying the home from across the country, so it was especially important that the inspection be thorough.
