The new central heating/air is excellent! Very efficient and quiet. Insulation has helped to control the temperature. Ceiling fan was fine, except the wiring wasn't perfect and had to be repaired. The real problem was with the original contract. Before installation, I was told there were 2 follow up appointments to check and maintain the unit during the first year; one for the heater and the other for the A/C. It took more than 2 years to get them to come out because someone didn't enter that information into the paperwork that they referred to. They wouldn't do the maintenance because it wasn't in the contract. It finally took someone to look at the original paperwork for them to discover that, yes, I was supposed to have the 2 additional appointments. Once they finally got it straight, they came right out and did the maintenance. The work was professionally and quickly completed as promised. The installation workers themselves have been very friendly and courteous each and every time. Like I said, if it wasn't for the omission of the verbally agreed upon follow up maintenance in some of the paperwork, I wouldn't have any complaints at all. I would recommend them to anyone who asks.
Description of Work: Removed old central heating/air, and installed new high efficiency unit. Also added insulation to ceiling/attic, and installed a new whole house fan (which I had purchased from another provider).

So yes their service tech's know what they are doing and do a good job. But this is a Sales Organization that just happens to do heating and air. They are relentless and do not take NO for an answer.
Description of Work: The a/c wasn't working properly, service tech who came out was very professional and seemed to know what he was doing. He made some kind of adjustment and it is working now. I happened to ask at the time (out of curiousity how much a new unit would cost. I received a call from their salesperson and told him I was just looking for ballpark numbers. He wanted to come to the house and I said no. He kept calling, finally I called their office to ask the salesperson's manager to cease calling. The manager was apologetic and promised that they would stop calling. He kept calling. Called the office again to ask that their salespeople stop calling. They are still calling to this day, including 3 times tonight.

Our water heater went out late Saturday night. Scott returned our call very promptly. He came out the next morning and got started working. Unfortunately, our water heater had to be replaced. Scott was very knowledgeable and helpful in making the decision to replace it with the Rinnai system. Scott and Allen showed up right on time Monday morning and got to work. The job turned out great and we love the Rinnai! I would definitely call these guys again.
Description of Work: we had a loss of hot water, but still had cold water. Scott went to great lengths to determine that the hot water heater was bad and could not be fixed. He then replaced the tank heater with a Rinnai tankless system.

Clarke & Rush gave me my second estimate. I did my own research and had specific requirements, so I knew beforehand exactly what models I wanted. I was looking for a price to come in somewhere around $6,000 after all rebates and credits. After acceptance of the contract, Clarke sent out a 3 man crew to do the work. They were very careful with not damaging anything in the house. Laid down tarps over all work areas. They were here at about 8:30 and all work was completed by 2:30 in the afternoon. A Title 24 duct leak test was performed and passed. The work was all professionally done.
Description of Work: Replaced 32 year old original furnace and AC with high end Carrier units. Furnace is a Carrier Infinity 95 80,000 btu modulating (3 stage) furnace. AC is a Carrier Performance 16, 4 ton 2-stage compressor. Coil is an ADP brand. Both units are connected to a Carrier Infinity Control (Thermostat) Return air duct was modified to essentially double its capacity. All duct registers were replaced. Price quoted above was before all rebates. Carrier had a $1,000 instant rebate. Units qualify for the IRS $1,500 tax credit. SMUD has a $650 rebate on the AC. PG&E has a $200 rebate on the 95% efficient Furnace.

The technician who discovered the problem, Billy, was very helpful throughout the whole process. I was a little disappointed that it took two weeks and a few phone calls to get the repair process going. Billy returned exactly two weeks later with a new evaporator coil, arriving promptly at 8 am. I couldn't be happier with the work he did. His attention to detail, concern for keeping my home clean, and quick, hard work were all very appreciated. He even took the time to show me his work and explain everything he did before he left. All in all I am very satisfied with the work that was done, I just wish the company would have been a little more proactive about getting my AC back in commission as the summer heat was kicking in. Total job time: 4 hours.
Description of Work: During a previous visit by this company to clean my air ducts, one of the technicians discovered that I my evaporator coil pan had rusted through completely and was falling apart. According to the technician, the condensation was then beginning to leak down onto the heat exchanger creating a dangerous situation where further damage would potentially cause carbon monoxide to be released into the air in the house. The tech disconnected power to the air conditioner for safety, took down the model number of the system, and left, returning on a later date to repair the system.

There was some rushing, because the installation was completed before the permit was issued by the city. This would not have been a problem except the previous homeowner had an outstanding permit from the city. I had to clear the previous permit before the permit for the new heat pump could go through. There was no problem with the city's final inspection of the new unit.

I called to schedule an appointment on a Wednesday for the following Tuesday at 10:00am. I discussed options with the representative before deciding to limit the work to just duct cleaning on this visit. The woman I spoke with was very friendly and helpful. On Friday she called back to confirm the time she had scheduled with me, then asked if they could begin an hour early at 9:00, which I agreed to. On Tuesday, to my surprise, the crew showed up at my house at 8:00 ready to work. I would much rather have them come early than late, so I really wasn't bothered too much by their showing up an hour ahead of schedule and I'll keep their punctuality rating as an 'A.' The two men who performed the work were very courteous and friendly and got to work quickly after a brief tour of the house. Before entering, they stopped to put on booties and before getting to work they put down plenty of drop cloths. Throughout the process, both men showed me areas of concern and spots they were repairing. When my house was constructed, the builder did not properly seal the ducting where it meets the vents in each room allowing air to escape up into the attic and walls. They estimated that I was probably losing anywhere from 20 to 30 percent of my air through these gaps. With just a few minutes' work and a little foil tape they sealed up the gaps and hopefully save me some money. The big surprise of the day was when one of them found that my coil pan had completely rusted out and was allowing water to get to the heat exchanger. He took a picture of it to show me the problem and described what could happen as a result, strongly suggesting that I not use my air conditioner until they could repair it. Later, he even had me reach in to feel how deteriorated the pan had become, describing it as feeling like "construction paper" instead of solid metal. He took down the model number and called in to see if they could manage to replace just the pan or if they would have to replace the entire coil. They will call back with a recommendation and quote at a later time. He told me that being only 12 years old, the coil should have plenty of life left in it, so hopefully they are able to obtain and replace just the pan. Before leaving, they disconnected power to the coil, left a warning for the next tech who comes to work on it, and tested the system to make sure the fan and heat still worked properly. The work took about two and a half hours for my 3bed/2bath single story house. All in all, although itwas a bit pricey, I am very satisfied and would definitely recommend them in the future.

I had an appointment for 'someone' to come to my home and give me an estimate for a new HVAC system. After arranging my day to be home for said appt, I waited; I finally called 35 min after our appointed time had passed. I was put on hold while the person answering the phone "checked out my situation". I waited some more... then when the phone rang back into their system a different person answered the phone. After my explanation, she said I will check on this and call you back. She did call back and said the sales man that was assigned to my appt did not answer his phone; she left a voicemail for him. She was apologetic and stated that as soon as he got back to her she would call me. That was over a week ago now, and We've stopped waiting. I sincerely hope nothing happened to the man and everything is alright but I wouldn't know as no one had the courtesy to call us back. It is an unprofessional way to conduct business. Needless to say, we won't consider giving our business to this company now or in the future.

Clarke & Rush installed my air conditioning and heating equipment (Carrier) and did a good job on the installation; however, their annual maintenance efforts indicate a complete lack of professionalism. At their request, we jointly established dates and times for maintenance inspections, which I paid for, and they fail to show up and do not call to inform me of the impending failure. They recently sent a post card notifying me that tune up and maintenance service is already paid for and asked that I e mail them to schedule an appointment. I e mailed them two weeks ago and am still waiting for a response.
Description of Work: I contracted with Clarke & Rush to perform semi-annual inspections of my air conditioning and heating system for $159 for two inspections. They first time on Dec 15, 2009 (from 8 am to noon). They never showed up nor called. I called at noon and they apologized and rescheduled for a morning appointment on Dec 29, 2009. Again, they never showed and failed to call. I called at noon and complained and asked for a refund of my money.

The job went very well. They did the work in December, but we reviewed them earlier. They are one of the customers for the company that I work for. But I also wanted to review the customer feedback on Angie's List. Since they were a customer of mine and then I saw some of the feedback on the list, I decided to go with them. I was at their location on a Monday and they set the service for that week on Thursday. They were out at my house within 3 days to do the work. They were actually early.

They were fairly prompt in responding to our initial call for service. Technician checked out our unit and said he "put a bandaid on it" to get it running but it was old, etc., and really needed to be replaced. Charged us $270 for the service call. It ran for about two hours and quit working. Another tech from Clarke & Rush came out in the early evening and said the mother board was bad and would be around $700 to replace. He said we should consider a new unit but would have someone follow up with us the next day to wire our old unit so we would at least have air until we could replace it. No one followed up for three or four days, and it was a very hot week when all of this happened. To make a long story short, we had another company come out for a second opinion. Problem ended up being a minor switch that wasn't connected. That company fixed it for $160 and it has worked like a charm since.

Salesperson was very professional and knowledgable. He provided an excellent overview of the available options and approximate costs. He provided a written, final estimate within 24 hours. He coordinated with the installation crew to arrange work so that there would be minimal disruption of heat during the cold period of installation. The installation crew was professional and accommodating. All work was completed in two days as promised even though much was performed in very tight quarters and several "work arounds" were necessitated by same. We are very satisfied with the system performance, as it has resulted in significant utility cost savings.

Initial diagnostic test ($25) revealed a 30% loss. Billy & Derrick came out on agreed date to perform the work. They first cleaned the duct system using a HEPA power vacuum. Billy did an excellent job of enclosing the space under the heating unit with sheet metal and caulking. Then they sealed all register seams, plugged outlets, inflated/pressurized system, and injected the Aeroseal sealant into the ductwork. A tube in the attic came apart due to the pressure. Both men went into the attic and repaired the leak. The initial test showed 198 CFM of leakage. After having the work performed, the final test showed 19 CFM leakage. This corresponds to a 90% reduction in duct leakage. Clarke & Rush said this was like going from a 37 square inch hole to a 4 square inch hole. We have really noticed a difference in air flow through the vents and less dust around the house. This was money well spent.
Description of Work: Clean ductwork and seal with Aeroseal. Clarke & Rush are a SMUD approved Aeroseal company. I received a $300 rebate from SMUD by using the Aeroseal Technology ($1395 - $300 = $1095).

Sales person was very professional. He explained the system very well and was patient with my questions. He made some recommendations re the registers that were spot-on. (No other bidder did this). Advised that the new A/C unit would be in a slightly different location due to the increased height of the new vs. old unit which made opening a door difficult and unlikely to pass inspection. Again, no other bidder seemed to catch this. Quote was good for 30 days which gave me time to get other bids and make an educated choice. Workers showed up on time, were very thorough, had all the equipment etc. and were ready to work immediately. They spent time setting up the thermostat to my preferences and taught me how to use it. They also explained how the system works and some of its little quirks (I went from a very old system to hi-tech so there was a learning curve) which meant there were no surprises when they left. They were neat, tidy and polite. Heater works great. The paperwork was straightforward and I passed county inspection with no problem and C&R warned that the SMUD rebate would take a while but they handled all the paperwork for it and I have gotten my rebate.

When my heater went out, I called and received prompt service from sales department who came out and sold me a new unit and left space heaters until new heater could be installed. The installation crew arrived on time and worked non stop until unit was in and old one out.The installers were very good, prompt and professional. It was working when they left and I went to run a few errands. When I returned, the house became colder and colder and the thermostat wouldn't register at all. I called the answering service and was promised a call from on-call staff. After multiple calls to answering service for 2-2 1/2 hours there was no call from any serviceman on-call and the house got colder and colder. I called the sales agent on his direct line and left some frantic messages about the lack of heat from this "new" unit. Finally a serviceman came and said the sales agent had called him and he fixed the unit after 2+ hours. There was a "short" in new unit. The unit has worked somewhat since and is loud. This unit doesn't work as well as my 22 year old unit did. I kept expecting a call from the company to see how things were - silly me expecting such a thing. No one ever called. I finally felt I had to report this incidence to the manager and she was very apologetic and promised to look into it and would get back to me - and NEVER DID - surprise. I called again and talked to manager that I was upset that she too didn't return calls or make good on previous promises. Again she apologized and that was end of story for her. Don't use this company if you expect service after the unit is installed. They were very prompt with the initial service and pretty lousy when there was a problem. I am sorry I used this company even though they were recommended to me.
