Overall, it was great to work with Armstrong plumbing. In this situation, I could have been easily charged out the nose for unnecessary repairs. I saved a bundle of money not going with a previous estimate. Thanks, Dave!
Description of Work: I am so pleased with Armstrong plumbing, specifically Dave, for the excellent service that I wanted to write a review immediately. The purpose of his visit was to possibly repair/replace a water heater, test the fixture in a shower, and clear a clogged drain. Dave was on time, professional, and very nice to talk to while working in my house. He was very clear about each thing he was working on. I am naturally a very curious person and he didn't mind me looking over his shoulder to watch him work. Dave actually took the time to teach me a few things, too! Being a college instructor myself, I would give him an A++ if I could! I believe he was very honest with his estimates. He evaluated the hot water heater and said that even though we haven't serviced it (ever) that we are still ok. Dave said that it wasn't even worth having service done on it because of it's age. We'll just call them back when the water heater finally bites the dust. Dave cleared a slow drain in a bathroom sink. He then showed me all the fungus(!) buildup. Gross and thanks for not openly judging me on that nastiness. Per his suggestion, bleach will be going down all the sinks very often. Anyway, he also took the time to adjust our faucets so that the handles were angled in the right positions. Ours were initially off center and he taught me how easily I can adjust them myself. Finally, he checked our shower and adjusted our fixture so that I have hot water now. Oh, and he complimented my handy work on my previous installation of a new shower head. Yes!!

His company is excellent. He is old-school in his approach. He wanted to make sure that everything was fine and that it was all going well. He was always concerned that everything was alright. He's fantastic and a wonderful person. He has the doctor-like "bedside manner." When you have good rapport with somebody, it makes the process nicer.

Called in early AM and set up time for 11 AM -1PM that day. Peter arrived during that time. He looked at the leak, figured it out, and fixed in five minutes. Unfortunately, from a cost viewpoint, he had to bill the full rate for time. I understand and only gave a B because of cost/time ratio. Not advised ahead of time what cost would be if he looked and made repair. He looked and started repair without really giving estimate before starting. I asked for cost after work was done. I needed the work done today so it was worth it and I know the rate is in the ballbark of others. I was given 10% discount for mentioning Angie.

The job went smoothly. Getting a 56" water heater out through a 30" doorway was not easy. I helped a little bit. For the most part I stayed out of the plumber's way. I happened to be down in the kitchen when he was trying to get the new heater into the awkward space. I gave a litttle push which was helpful. The new heater had to be slightly displaced to comply with the earthquake-protection requirements. This involved mounting heavy straps attached to a wall. The job was done at 11:33. The heater works fine. Excellent job.
Description of Work: I had requested that my old (34 years) hot water heater be replaced. It wasn't broken but was way past its warranty of 6 years. An estimator from Armstrong Plumbing came for a visit. The water heater is in an awkward location. It is under the stairs going to the second floor of this condominum unit. To get to the water heater, one has to pull the kitchen refrigerator from its alcove and then open two 30"-high doors to get to the heater space. A few days after the estimator's visit I received a clear estimate by email. A work-day was agreed to, and the job went smoothly The eta for the estimator was 9-11 AM He arrived at 10 AM. The refrigerator has a ice-water spigot so there was a 1/4" water line to disconnect. The control for that line had not been operated for many years. When finished the plumber urged me to check the valve in the next few days, since the dry packing may leak. (He was right. I'll have to tighten the packing nut, again.)

We had a severely clogged kitchen drain. We tried resolving the problem ourselves by plunging, snaking, and eventually using Drano. Nothing worked and, after two failed Drano treatments, we finally decided to cave in and pay a professional. We visited Angie's list and picked 3 companies. I called Armstrong and asked for a rough estimate on what it might cost to get the kitchen drain cleared and look into an issue we were having with our sump pump. I was hesitant to mention the water hammer problem in the bathroom because I simply didn't want to spend more money and, frankly, thought it was something I could take care of, but I discussed it anyway. I'm glad I did. More on that later. The estimator was very professional, asked good pertinent questions (such as the condition of our pipes, etc) and provided a range between $90 and $135. I decided to schedule an appointment and was transferred to the appt scheduler. My phone disconnected but I called back and, by that time, the scheduler had already received my paperwork from the estimator and knew exactly what my situation was. The entire operation seemed very efficient and professional unlike most of my dealings with service companies and contractors (stories for another day). I called the other 2 higly rated companies just for comparison. One said that they may need to refer me to another company for the sump pump problem. The other company had a very gruff person answering the phone who was very short with me. So these 2 were very easy to dismiss. On the day of our scheduled service (next day), Peter called stating that he'd finished his morning job earlier than expected and was wondering if he could swing by early, which wasn't a problem with us. Peter was very professional and polite. Cleared the kitchen clog easily by snaking from the outdoor kitchen cleanout. Tested our sump pump and found an obstruction (I looked down there before - not sure how I didn't catch this). The water hammer problem had a simple solution as well. I was glad we had them look into it as I would have taken apart the faucet to look for an obstruction and wasted a bunch of my time when it took him just a minute. Overall, very good and professional service from start to finish. They run an excellent operation and we've definitely found our new plumbers. NOTE: The price I quoted above was with Angie's 10% discount.
Description of Work: Cleared a clogged kitchen drain. Troubleshoot and resolve sump pump that wasn't engaging. Fix water hammer (pipe shake and no water output) in bathroom faucet.

I liked the guy very well. He was quite pleasant and he knew what he was doing. The stems had been in for 31 years and some of them did not want to come out. He had to put a lot of strength towards getting the stems out. They were a little pricey and I think the price was high. They came out within two hours.

The plumber showed up quickly, as the dispatcher said he would. The plumber was professional and friendly. He quickly found the problem and fixed it. I thought it was a reasonable price to fix something I would not have figured out myself.
Description of Work: The angle valve on my toilet was leaking after I replaced it and the float valve the previous day. I called them at 730 am and the plumber was there at 810 am. He quickly found I had put plumbers tape on the angle valve that was not necessary and was causing the leak. He fixed it and also checked to make sure I had correctly replaced the float valve. He also checked a couple of other plumbing issues in my house, but said they were ok for now. He gave me some advice about how to deal with some common plumbing problems. This is the second time I have used Armstrong Plumbing. The first time they fixed my water heater and replaced my kitchen faucet and garbage disposal. They did a great job on those things too.

The first plumber that arrived reeked so badly of cigarette smoke that I called the company and told them due to my family's allergies and asthma I couldn't have someone who had an odor I could smell 15 feet away in my house. The office manager was very apologetic and nice and offered to send someone else. The next "expert" plumber who arrived started working on my faucet. It took him two hours to determine that he didn't have the right part (a rubber seal from Moen). His big idea was to silicone seal the gap around the bottom of my swiveling fixture. Now that he has done his "handywork" I am worse off than before he came. My faucet is frozen in place with his silicone caulking and it is leaking! (it wasn't leaking before he "fixed" it) I honestly can't believe a "professional" plumber considers this problem fixed. A plumber with any degree of competence would have figured out immediately that he did not have the part he needed and that the best thing for me was to buy a new fixture and have him come back and install it. My two year old kitchen faucet clearly is defective and needs replacing. (It's under warranty but would you wait for weeks without a faucet to claim your warranty? I bought a new fixture this afternoon) My fixture was working but loose (not leaking) before he arrived. The creepiest part of this story is that when I asked him to take his tools and leave it took three requests and a threat to call 911 to get him out of my house. He had "completed" the job and was explaining to me why it was "acceptable" when I told him that it wasn't. (see photo) He stood over me shaking his finger at me all red faced yelling about how he has been a plumber for thirty years and he knows what he is doing. I am really glad I was not in the house alone. When I called the office to tell them what had happened I was promised a call back. I have not heard from them

Response from Armstrong Plumbing
We are so sorry you felt the need to discredit us on Angie's List. We have been your plumber for some time and have serviced many of your properties here in Sacramento. Our history with you has always been one of mutual respect and admiration. You are aware of the excellent service we have provided you in the past and this particular service call was no exception. We did what you had asked us to do. Upon recommending that you REPLACE your faucet, you insisted that we FIX it instead. Milton did his best to "fix" a very complicated issue. The faucet was broken in many places and definitely should have been replaced. Once he was able to get it working for you, you accused him of ruining it further. This was a no win situation for us. Milton did NOT threaten you as claimed rather he simply tried to explain why he "fixed" your faucet in the manner in which he did. Never in the 40 year history of this company have we ever had a customer act so irrational and scream at our technician to leave. After Milton left we then received more disturbing phone calls from you to our office staff. We tried to explain it once again to no avail. We even suggested, once again, that we purchase a new faucet and come out and replace it. You said that you did not want us back in your home. Thank you for your years of patronage but unfortunately upon trying all we could to make you happy, we were unsuccessful and wish you well.

When I called, the problem wasn?t an emergency but they were able to schedule an appointment first thing the next morning. George arrived promptly at the scheduled time, and was very professional and courteous. He finished ahead of schedule, and the labor cost was right on the estimate. He was even good-natured about having to recalculate the bill because I forgot the mention the Angie?s List discount. I will definitely use this company again in the future, and recommend them to my friends.
Description of Work: He repaired a constantly-running toilet and its cheap leaky shutoff valve, replaced the identical shutoff valve on the other toilet, and replaced the leaky mixing valve in the shower.

Very well. The last time we had work done by another contractor they encountered serious problems with calcified/corroded old pipes. Our house is a 1952 home in an area notorious for its hard water, and the fixtures appear to be very old if not the originals. Contractor fixed the problem without incident. Another contractor provided a lower quote for the same work, however, the I felt the plumber who estimated the cost for this repair was more thorough and professional in developing the estimate.

This time ours was not a big complicated plumbing project, but I will call Armstrong for any future plumbing issue I have. I purchased a new faucet at Home Depot to install myself, but found I didn't have the specialized tools required. I selected Armstrong from Angie's List for their high ratings and called them. They gave a fairly typical estimate of $135-$155 over the phone, and I was able to schedule a service call for 9:00-noon the next day. At 9:00 the co-owner of the company called to say our plumber had just been on an emergency sewer call immediately before us and was now rather soaked in sewage. Because they couldn't send him out to us in that state, she discounted our service price an additional 10% over the Angie's List 10% coupon, and promised to have someone out that same afternoon. The plumber showed up as promised, and did a perfect installation. I am very happy with our new faucet and the way we were treated by this company. They displayed the kind of professionalism and customer care that I want from every company I deal with.

The employee, David, was very professional and helpful. He had no trouble clearing the main sewer line. He spent a long time doing the estimate on trenching for a separate drain and for a trenchless sewer line installation. He only charged me for the time he worked on cleaning the sewer line. I will definitely use this company again when I have plumbing problems. My sewer line stopped up on the weekend (of course). When I called to make an appointment the person on the phone not only gave me their weekend price, but also their week day cost which was less. Since my sewer was still draining very slowly, I was able to wait until Monday morning and save money. I appreciate Armstrong's volunteering that info.
Description of Work: Cleaned out a blockage in the main sewer line and tested it. He also looked at another trenching job and gave me an estimate, but suggested a way to do get that type of work more inexpensively than he could do!

Armstrong Plumbing sent out Anthony that afternoon. He too had trouble clearing the line and finally pulled the toilet. He found that the toilet connection pipe (from the sewer line) was hooked up very poorly over 20 years ago and you could clearly see there was only about an inch opening to drain. Anthony also went under the house and found we had a leak and many of the old metal pipes and connections were in need of replacement/repair. He gave us choices at each step without being pressured. He also took photos under the house each day to show me the work. My husband and I are very pleased with the work and highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Our guest bathroom toilet has flushing problems that would back-up every few months. This has gone on for years in our older home. I needed a plumber to unplug the current problem and run a check of the entire system.
