,See services performed. The $3900 was just for the zoning. I have a 2-year money back guarantee from them on that. If they want to honor that, I'll take it. I am not sure I want more changes that don't work right from them.
Description of Work: I have had doubts about these guys from day one. They always seemed more interested in getting me to replace my HVAC system than in maintaining it. They always mentioned that the average lifespan was 15 years and that mine was above that. Anyway, partly because it was a subjective judgment, I stuck with them. My system always seemed to struggle in extreme conditions but it generally worked well. For that reason, I thought that dividing our 3-level home into 2 zones would help. I asked them to do the work, which they did. It improved things quite a bit. I also asked them to add a new intake, which they also did. Later, on one of the regularmaintenance calls, this guy showed up and started taking the entire furnace apart. I didn't feel comfortable about it, partly because he had claimed in the past that he had invented a "free energy" device (I asked him why he was still working as a maintenance guy instead of being a billionaire) and, that time, he said that he was going to Vegas the next day, a company reward for being a top employee (I asked myself whether I should indirectly pay for such perks). Anyway, he eventually could not take the whole furnace apart, gave up, and put it back together. He was supposed to also check the AC but, when he did, it did not come on. He said it was because it was too cold, which didn't seem right, but, after having him work on the furnace for a couple of hours, I was happy to ignore that and get rid of him. Later that year, when the weather got hot, I turned on the AC and it was not working. I had by then forgotten about that episode. I have a home warranty so I called them. Someone came to take a look and realized that a wire had not been reconnected. He fixed that. When he looked at the whole system, he told me that the zoning system had not been properly installed because it was missing a "bypass damper". He said that there was a sensor that would shut off the heat when the unit was getting too hot but the proper way to do things would be to have that sensor open a bypass damper. I called Service Champions with the intention of cancelling my contract but they said they had fired the guy and they offered to install the bypass damper for free so I decided to give them another chance and I took them up on the offer. A guy showed up and installed it. Unfortunately, I could not be at home when he completed the work. I tried the heat and AC, the next day, and things didn't seem right. Even with only one zone active, the air flow seemed too low. I called Service Champion to ask them about it, and in particular what triggered the bypass damper, but they never returned my call. Thingsstill kind of worked as they did before I zoned the house, so, being busy and all, I kind of ignored the whole thing during the hot season. With the beginning of the cold season, it became more obvious that things were not working as expected. Even with only one zone on, theair flow was low and I could hear the furnace swich on and off multiple times per cycle, something it had never done before. So, thanks to the long Thanksgiving weekend, I finally decided to check things out (all this equipment is underneath the house, on a slope, and not all that easy to check). What I found is that the bypass damper did not havean electric motor to control it and, of course, was not connected to any sensor. It was simply open all the time, with a weight at the end of a rod to force it open. I forcibly closed it, thereby restoring the system to the state it was in prior to the bypass damper installation, played around with the 2 zones and things were back to normal. Strong airflow when only one zone was on, less strong when both zones were active. I am not even planning to get anything out of these guys. I am going to cancel my service, period. I should have trusted my instinct and cancelled my contract the first time I had doubts about them. They are not in the business of helping you, they are in the business of trying toget you to replace your system, whether you need it or not. Stay away from these guys!
