Can’t say enough wonderful things about this company…My wife and I carefully researched 5 separate HVAC repair companies prior to narrowing it down to two, of which we received bids on. We were impressed by the professionalism and pricing of both, but are now absolutely elated that we chose Brower Mechanical. We had a number of efficiency issues with our old heating and air system, as well as some general health concerns with regard to air quality. Mitch came to our home and stayed for almost 3.5 hours diagnosing various issues (Technically it took him all of about 30 minutes to locate the specific problems, but he took the time and care to spend the additional hours educating us). Mitch was extremely knowledgeable, patient and professional. He didn’t try to push any product or sell any costly overhaul package. The solution he designed was specific to the problems we were having and not some sort of bolt on solution. He gave us two great options, and we chose the one that was a little easier on our pocket, which was the one he recommended from the start (Who does that these days?). The crew who came to our home to do the work were equally impressive (Bob and Chris). These guys always arrived on time, took the time to educate my wife and I on overall progress, answered any questions we had, and cleaned up to perfection. These guys even came back out to reassess a few items after the job was complete. The home office even followed up with us after the job was complete to make sure we were happy with everything. Now that the job is complete, the improvement is absolutely remarkable. It really has made our home a much more enjoyable place to be on both hot and cold days. We are sooooo pleased that we chose Brower Mechanical. Mitch, Bob and Chris are amazing!!!! Summary of all the positives: and middot; Always on time and middot; Very knowledgeable and middot; Never “salesy” or pushy and middot; Excellent craftsmanship, took pride in their work and used high quality materials and middot; Design specific to the issues you’re having and middot; Very competitive pricing and middot; Honest Systematic process for completing items to customer’s satisfaction

Original call was to replace a set back thermostat because the one I purchased at home goods store for $50.00 ran the aux. heat no matter the temperature or time run. Germain to issue is I was recouping from medical procedure and couldn't do the work. Tech arrived on time, was very personable and knowledgeable - I liked the guy. We discussed the cost of thermostat units - I thought the installed cost of the very basic on/off digital unit was somewhat excessive at $198.00, but the other units had features I was not interested in and their cost was sky high - $420.00. He installed the unit quickly, with a quick test which included climbing on the roof where the heat pump was mounted. He also performed some checks and gave the unit an OK. He was also willing to climb into the attic and inspect the air intake/distribution section of heat pump. The inspection resulted in nothing out of the ordinary, but I did tell him the two registers furthest from the heat pump blow ambient air in both winter and summer - real cold in winter and real hot in summer. At that time we were discussing the pros and cons of one of their programs of plysically moving all of the suspended flexi duct work down, and then blowing additional insulation into the attic and covering the ducts. I liked the idea and got some more info re a sales rep which could come out and further discuss the same - I needed to go through the tech though, so he could get the appropriate credit for the contact. I had no problem with this arrangement - I feel good work results in rewards. Before I contacted the tech, my grandson and I were discussing the issues of my hot summer and cold winter blowing registers, at which time he volunteered to climb into my attic and just look around; he had some previous limited HVAC experience. Grandson started with air intake/distribution section. He took the same path as tech and spotted a problem from five feet away - one duct distribution line was almost off of the unit. He took photos of everything he found. You could have slipped your hand into the bottom of the opening. He went around the back of the unit and found several more loose duct lines. He corrected all of them. This young man had very limited HVAC time compared to the professional tech, and I take exception over the tech missing the seperated ducting. I spoke with company and they assurred me tech is one of their best. The company did not want to lose my business and offered incentives. I used this company before - they installed my heat pump, but due to the issues mentioned I will not use them again.
Description of Work: At my request, replaced set back thermostat for heat pump with simple digital on/off thermostat for $198.00. Also climbed on roof and cleaned coil for unit - tech was somewhat instant re. this item. Tech also climbed into attic space and inspected main distribution/intake area of heat pump. Inspection discovered nothing out of the ordinary, however tech did discuss lowering the flexi duct work and covering with additional insulation due to insulation setteling.

They are very good about calling to schedule our semi annual maintenance service visits. They call with a reminder several days prior to the scheduled visit and then again the morning of their visit with an ETA. They are always on time and are extremely professional. They line the carpets with plastic in the areas they will walk over and wear booties over their shoes before coming into the house. They are thorough about explaning what they did, how everything is running and if anything is wrong they will explain what they did to fix. If you have a favorite technician, you can request them to be the one to come out for the work to be performed. We used to them install a new hvac system in our home 4 years ago and had them extend duct work 2-3 years later. We decided to use them for a general maintenance program after the general warranty period was over. They have been maintaining our systems for almost 4 hears now. We are very happy with their overall service and highly recommend them for any HVAC needs.
Description of Work: semi annual maintenance on our heater. we have a maintenance contract and they come out every 6 months; fin the fall they service the heater and in the spring they service the a/c system.

Very nice people, all perfect gentlemen. They arrived on time after calling us to give their ETA, did all the work in a professional manner, threw a tennis ball for our chocolate lab until he was satisfied that they were and quot;OKand quot;, and cleaned up after themselves. Very professional service, and honest. I enjoyed meeting them all. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: We found Brower Mechanical on Angie's List a couple of years ago, and decided to go with them when our old exterior Carrier A/C compressor unit gave out. They were able to get it going again, but warned us that it would very likely not last much longer. Sure enough, a week later it died for good. Brower replaced it with a Trane Model 14 unit which is MUCH quieter, and they credited us for the parts they had replaced on the old unit. They recommended adding another air return vent in the Master bedroom, which we had them do. We also liked Brower enough that we bought their 5-year service plan; they come twice a year (spring & fall) and check everything out. They found a leaking blower motor in the attic during the recent fall service visit. They recommended doing a whole-house efficiency evaluation, which we agreed to. The first thing they found was a leaky gas valve on the kitchen stove. Mark, their service rep., called PG&E, who arrived within 1/2 hour and fixed the gas valve behind the stove, for free. Otherwise, our house checked out OK. We are now considering having them replace our 15-year old Carrier furnace in the attic, and the 15-yr old garage-mounted water heater, plus adding more attic insulation, re-routing the heating and cooling tubes under new insulation, etc. I will write another review if we decide to have this work done.

They were very efficient, professional, and accomodating. The sales rep was punctual to our meetings, let us know what he thought needed to be done, and how much it would cost. He did not recommend new ducting for one of the systems because we already had nearly new ductwork, but he did recommend changing out the other side (which we did). We did not get another bid to compare. We had another HVAC system go out and did hire another company that was able to give us a better deal on the unit we were having installed, but they weren't quite a quick as Brower.
Description of Work: We had two HVAC systems replaced within the span of 6 months and Brower did both of them.

My experience was good, and I would hire them again.
Description of Work: New Trane heat & air, water heater, 10 new ducting R-6, insulation attic, 3 lg. roof dormers, install 2 baffels on 2 vents, replace old lighting in kitchen w 6 recessed lites, move return air intake, add new dryer vent, foam all holes replace whole house cover. iInsulation in attic is rated R49 a new refrigerator In the total price was 10 Amerimax vinyl windows that "GOOD NEWS HOME IMPROVEMENTS" installed. A+ for them. BROWER's were always on time, respectful of my home, explained any questions I had, cleaned up everything at the end of theday. My home is now energy efficient, quieter due to new windows, and PGE bill is half of what it was in the past. They do a good job, but are not cheap. They found me a "0" interest loan, I also received $3000.00 rebate from PGE and was supposed to receive $1, 250.00 from the state, but have been not . received it. a

My air conditioner hadn't worked for 2 years. I called Brower and they were there the next day, diagnosed, got the part and fixed my unit within 3 days. I wasn't looking for an emergency fix as I had a portable unit that I used successfully but was looking to utilized my whole house with very hot days ahead so I'm grateful that the unit was restored is working very well in very hot weather. The technician also encountered a large amount of critter droppings around my unit and ended up spraying off my roof and sprinkle critter deterrent pellets for me as part of the whole process. Very nice.
Description of Work: Brower diagnosed, acquired part and had me fixed and working very well very quickly. My cooling coil was replaced. The unit was 'charged' and freon added. All my ducts were checked for performance.

Kevin, the salesman (nice guy) came back with a quote of $23,136.63 for the option to perform an: attic seal, duct seal, insulate attic to R-38 by adding R-25, wrap my existing ducts with R-19 insulation, a new 2.5 ton Day and Night HVAC system, new Vertex Water Heater, enlarge return, and lastly, move the furnace from closet to attic. This large figure was mind numbing to say the least, so I opted to pass up on this otherwise unappealing offer and decided to shop around. And boy am I ever glad I did so. I got five other quotes. Three from contractors who are all part of the SMUD efficiency program. I also got quotes from other outfits that were not part of SMUD program to fulfill my personal curiosity. In any case, Brower Mechanical was the highest bid by a long shot. I DON'T KNOW WHO DOES THE ACTUAL BIDDING BUT MY GUESS IS THAT THEY DO SO WITH THE INTENTION OF GAUGING THE UNSUSPECTING CONSUMER. IF I WERE A JUDGE, I might even hold SMUD liable for putting us in harms way by referring to me what I deem to be and quot;THIEVES WITH A TIE.and quot; When we decided on a contractor, our contractor asked me to have the .bld file obtained during the energy audit from Brower Mechanical. I got in touch with Adam, and gave him my email address. He told me he would forward the file right away. Two hours went by and I didn't have the file in my inbox. I called back and got Richard. I give him my email and a few hours later, nothing again. The next day, I called back and got Adam on the phone. I asked him again to please send me the file via email and he said he had already done so. I then checked my email while he was still on the other line, and short from calling him a liar, a told him a had not received it. But instead of getting mad, I got smart. I had asked the receptionist for Adams email prior to getting him on the phone. I politely asked him to reply to my email and attach the file. Low and behold, I finally had the file. My contractor then asked me to obtain the pictures, total air flow results, and CAZ testing. After two request to Brower Mechanical, I got this: Mr. Cornejo, The .bld file is the only file which we are required to provide you for another contractor per the SMUD Home Performance agreement. I have attached the language of the agreement below via the email we received when this issue came up in July. FYI, the CAZ testing results are in the report we provided you, pictures could NEVER be sent as they are completely proprietary, and your other contractor should be able to use nominal airflow. As a result, my contractor had me order another energy audit from a different outfit: Energy. I feel that this is a WASTE OF TAXPAYERS MONEY. SMUD payed Brower Mechanical to perform an energy test that had to be redone as a result of noncooperation or bad policy. If it was a result of bad policy, this is a bad policy because the audit should have been performed by an independent third party, not the contractor. I won't tell you the contractor we decided on, but they are part of the SMUD efficiency program and they go by the acronym Cand R. As part of my due diligence, I subscribed to Angie's list and Consumer Reports. I found Cand R on Angie's list. Now, please be advised that I am not writing this review to recommend or refer any one contractor. To remain impartial I will state that Cand R has had 14 claims filed with the BBB. MY EXPERIENCE AND FINDINGS SHOULD SERVE AS AN INCENTIVE TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK. IF YOU HAVE ANY MAJOR WORK THAT NEEDS DONE, PLEASE SHOP AROUND AND FIND A CONTRACTOR THAT FULFILLS YOUR PARTICULAR NEEDS. Brower did not come close to fulfilling those needs for me. I am writing this review a bit late from my actual findings because I have been rather busy and I will be cancelling my subscription with Angie's list at the end of the month. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Description of Work: I live in Rosemont and as part of the SMUD efficiency upgrade program, Brower Mechanical Inc. was referred to us by SMUD. They performed the energy auditing in our house and came back with a quote a few days later.

Response from Brower Mechanical CA LLC
The customer was given a quote for his system and three options with prices attached to each. His options were based on receiving the greatest rebates. The main concern was the total rebates allocated for the work he chose. He sought quotes from five other companies which may not be SMUD home performance contractors as well as different product lines and efficiencies. The other contractor he chose asked for a file which is sent to SMUD for the testing. We did give him the file, but not the photos within his report. We waived the fee as a courtesy to the customer. He is not a member of Angie’s list any longer, so that perhaps this message will not reach him. The financing option of a low 3% without a credit check ended by the time he received more quotes. We have been in business since 1979 and maintain an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. We started the Assessment Early October, and this negative review was made December 20, 2011. The CHF funding officially ran out at the end of November

The other night (Sunday) as we were about to go to bed we heard a horrible screeching noise coming from our AC unit. We went down to discover that the fan was not turning on the unit and that it was too hot to touch. We called Brower Mechanical Monday 4/18/11 on a referral from a family member, and they were able to schedule us an appointment for the next day. Their price for a referral was $92, but they lady informed me that if I scheduled work it would only be $55. I requested to have an early morning appointment versus a time slot in the afternoon and she told me they could put me on the schedule first to be between 8-9am. Ed, the repair guy, was there right at 8 am and was super friendly and walked me through all the questions/concerns I had about my unit. He was very thorough and worked quickly. He discovered it was just the capacitor that was out and that the fan was fine. He was able to replace everything needed for $187 out the door which I thought was very reasonable. Everyone at Brower was very friendly and respectful! I would definitely recommend them to anyone needed a repair on an AC unit!

The salesman was chummy; the bid submitted was in the middle of the pack pricewise. With Brower's great reputation that was enough for us. Before we committed the salesman threw in a free upgrade of one A/C from 2 tons to 3 tons and offered to enlarge our upstairs air return (the 3-ton A/C was for upstairs) to improve airflow. This was done over the phone - a key point. The next step was a pre-site inspection. No problems arose, and I asked the guy if we really needed to replace our existing Lux thermostats - as the salesman had said - and this guy said we didn't need to. I mentioned the salesman upgraded the upstairs A/C to 3 tons and this guy suggested we get that in writing on a revised bid that removed the thermostats. We did so; the new bid was $200 less. Next was the install. When scheduling it I said that we could not let workmen in before 9AM because we have to drop kids off at different schools at 8:30. I also wrote this on a fax I sent the day before the job started as I had heard nothing to confirm they knew this. At the end of that same day I called to touch base on the time constraint as I still had heard nothing; I got a different salesman who said he'd let the installers know since they usually start at 7AM. At 7:20AM the next day the installers arrived, oblivious to our time restriction. They started outside and we let them in the garage - but not the house - while we were shuttling kids. We let them in the house at 8:45 and things went smoothly from there. At day's end I asked when they were going to enlarge the air return and they were all "Huh? You better call the sales guy and get his OK on that". I did and I got an EARFUL from him. The salesman was irate that I was asking him to back up his verbal commitment to enlarge the air return for free; he was mad that I couldn't let his guys in at 7:20, asking "How fair is that? I paid my guys to do nothing for 2 hours in the morning and you ask me for this?" He finally, grudgingly relented. But I have NEVER been so insulted by a contractor, and we have used LOTS of contractors. The second day of install was smooth. The guys showed up at 9AM, worked late and did an extra task - covering outside pipes to the A/Cs with a sheet metal cover - which I asked for as a paid change to the bid the prior day. There was stucco and drywall touchup remaining but overall I was pleased with the work. The installers even included extras where needed despite the extras not being explictly included in the bid. They cared about doing it right; cost was not a concern. But the horror that I met when I went into the attic later! Debris all over - screws, straps, sheet metal pieces, even 4' of old metal ducting they had replaced just sitting there. I spent 2 hours cleaning up, and was so mad I sent an email to Brower with lots more detail than this. Brower responded with gusto and did what was needed to rectify the situation, fixing about 6 small issues I had found.
Description of Work: Replaced two 20+ year old 2-ton A/C condensers and the indoor coils that go with them. Also replaced old line sets that were too small for new units and new refrigerant, which entailed running one of the line sets into the attic from the garage, as the second indoor coil and furnace for upstairs are in the attic.

Our heater/AC unit went out just after Thanksgiving. They were one of 4 companies who came out to give us a quote. Theirs was right in line, on the low side. The estimator was professional and explained every, single part of the quote. We decided to select them and they were able to schedule us right away (it was really cold out). I can't say, enough, what a great company this is. Their customer service is second to none. Their repair people are professional and really care what they are doing. They completely cleaned up after the work was done, then called to make sure it was done to our satisfaction. And, it turns out the salesperson's brother used to live in our house! What a coincidence.

Completed all paperwork required for electrical rebate as well as rebate from the manufacturer. Also completed all paperwork for City inspector.

They were friendly and punctual. They did their job, and we had no problem with the inspection. We are very pleased. Good communication. They were professional and did a good job.

I called for annual maintenance on my heating/air conditioning unit. Doug was prompt, friendly and professional. He was here for about one hour and did a thorough inspection and tune up. I have an old system and there are several items that need to be repaired for the air conditioning, but nothing that needs to be done now. I like the fact that he did not push me to buy a new unit. About a month later my heater had a problem, Doug came out, checked it, but could not determine the exact cause. We agreed that I would call when/if it happened again. To my delight he did not charge me for the visit because they had just done a tune up. Again he did not push me to replace the unit however, when I do I will definitely use them.
Description of Work: Heater/air conditioner maintenance.

Went great, from start to finish. Sales manager Mark was prompt and and thorough on the estimate, answering all questions. Their bid was far lower than 2 other highly rated competitors I found here on Angie's List. While the others were offering Trane and Bryant systems, I found the Amana system Brower offered perfect for our needs, including 5-yr warranties. Install took less than 6 hours, was prompt and clean. Explained everything well. Great customer service from all employees.
Description of Work: Installed a complete new heat pump air system, including air handler and condenser unit. Removed old system.

They were good. They did the work right. We didn't have to fight with them over it. I would hire them again in the future and recommend them to others as well.
Description of Work: They replaced our heating and a/c.
