Description of Work: Performed a whole-house energy assessment. The two individuals who performed the work were very professional and responded to all of our questions. They were also willing to provide several different alternative quotes. Unfortunately, the dollar amounts of the quotes were significantly higher than we anticipated. We will be seeking other quotes to determine a low-cost provider for the work that we need and will be doing part of the work ourselves to save money.

Description of Work: What you get for the obey is an energy audit of the building. What they hope to get is additional work in upgrading the nervy efficiency of the building. The audit was very helpful and easily worth the fee. THey folks were extremely professional and helpful and I expect that I will be using them for some of the energy upgrade as well (some of the needed work I will do myself). I didn't "detail" the experience in the above form because we haven't finished with the extra work.

Description of Work: They did a 'test-in' prior to the insulation/air sealing upgrades. The upgrade report took 2 weeks to arrive, even though they promised that I would have it within 48 hrs, and that's after I pestered them to get it to me. Granted, it was just before Christmas and I'm sure they were swamped with work because of high winter energy bills. Still, they could have managed the report delivery better. Patty and Laura were really nice to deal with though, just not as responsive as they could be. | |AHE also did asbestos abatement, new insulated flex ducting for part of the house to replace the leaky rigid ducting before they did whole house attic and wall insulation with blown-in cellulose. Robert Mitchell was the project manager and coordinated the work pretty well. The only hick-up was when I discovered some of the ducting work was not sealed properly but the technician that was scheduled to come do the 'test-out' also fixed the ducting. | |The good news is that when tested, the ducts were very well sealed, with less than 5% leakage (very good, as the target was 6% or more). I opted to do the attic and wall air sealing myself to save some money (it took a lot of work and crawling around in the attic, so do this at your own discretion), and the test-out for the whole house was much better than expected. The technician was surprised at how well sealed the house was (and congratulated me on a good job with air sealing). The final numbers showed a higher calculated energy savings at 37.5%, compared to the original estimate of 30% energy savings. This meant more rebate and money in my pocket! | |Useful TIP: since PG&E gives you a rebate of $500 for each increment of 5% calculated energy savings, I was 2.5% shy of 40% savings. The technician that gathered the test-out data did not have the test-in data with him. At 37.5% energy savings, I only qualified for $3500 rebate (which corresponded to 35% energy savings). If he did, he would have been able to advise what else can be done to gain 2.5% more improvement so that I would qualify for the 40% instead. On your project, you can request that they have the test-in data with them at test-out, so you may have a chance to get the next higher rebate amount! | |As a final note, our family is enjoying a much more comfortable home temperature as it remains stable (high 60's to low 70's) throughout the day, even on hot days (85-90 degrees F), and we have virtually eliminated the need to turn on the electric heater at nights to keep our kids' rooms warm. Come winter time, we expect to use the furnace MUCH LESS to keep the house warm. | |Another nice thing was that AHE took care of all the rebate paperwork, as well as the permits to do the project. And I've received all my rebates within 6 weeks of the test-out date. | |Overall, I would recommend AHE to a friend, because they are reasonably priced and have competent friendly folks working there. They were all professional and courteous. The only constructive feedback I have is their responsiveness can be improved.

Strange experience. The AHE rep (Russell) seemed fairly smart and professional, but I guess they work with a lot of subcontractors rather than their own workers. The rep came with a plumber and an HVAC guy. The plumber seemed experienced but had some whole hard-drinking-cowboy drama going that involved winks and confidences. The HVAC guy was younger and more excitable, throwing around technical terms he didn't quite understand and giving us increasingly incomprehensible answers to our basic questions. Russell, however, was clear and communicative. So the core AHE experience was good, but we were scared off by the wacky subcontractors. I could imagine someone else getting perfectly good work from them.
Description of Work: All we did was get a bid from these folks. We wanted to replace the heating and plumbing in an old house.

Really well ~ I'm very pleased with this investment in better energy use & better comfort. Advanced Home Energy (AHE) personnel is progressive and conscientious. Good communicators, very personable and professional; went the extra mile, were patient when I was fretting, offering me a guarantee. They are well-skilled, tidy and focused. Eliseo was head of my team and he was very responsive. The head of the company, Ori Skloot, stopped by and seemed familiar with every detail. With current rebates and tax credits right now, it feels like good value, especially as money is tight! AHE will work with you to find professionals to help with wiring, etc that may need to be done ahead. The house is warmer, more energy efficient and comfortable, and quieter to boot!
Description of Work: The work took four days: sealing the ductwork and adding two new branches plus extending one, then wrapping with R-6; plugging air leaks in the attic until they measured 20% less than previously as determined by a "blower door" that depressurized the home; then blowing in cellulose to R-36 on top of old batting and cellulose, insulating the door up to the attic to R-36; drilling exterior and filling the walls in my 1959 stucco home, then putting a patch on the holes. They took the time to drill inside where it was inaccessible from outside, so that the envelope would be as tight as possible.

Always punctual, well-mannered estimator, support staff and workers. Very conscientious about keeping the carpet and work areas clean. Took photos of the problems in the attic they found, and took photos of how they corrected the problems (leaks, etc.).
Description of Work: Attic duct sealing and insulation. They were very thorough in their initial estimate, and listened when I indicated why I did not want certain work performed at this time. They explained and wrote down exactly what they would do and why it was important. When I could not afford all of the recommended work in one area, they worked with me to identify what would be most beneficial to start with.

The entire project was done in 4 days. The staff arrived when they said they would, set up protective barriers where and when needed, and efficiently carried out the insulation, also sealing leaks prior to doing the insulation. They cleaned up when done each day, and also minimized the time they were in the main part of the house by going through the garage when possible. The crew were polite, well trained, as well as efficient, and were open to telling me what they were doing, as well as answering my questions as they came up.
Description of Work: AHE came out to bid on a job where I had previously had an energy audit and recommendations from another company. they essentially redid the audit in order to provide a bid and alternatives to meet my requirements. The service included insulation of the floor, walls and ceiling (attic), removal and replacement of the duct system, and installation of a new furnace.

I originally called AHE to get an estimate on replacing decaying crawl-space insulation. Their representative, Dvir, took lots of time with us when he came to give the estimate, explained how home insulation works in general, and suggested that increasing our skimpy attic insulation would give us much more bang for our buck than replacing the crawl-space floor insulation. He did recommend their high-tech "Whole-House" energy-efficiency test at $490, which would provide a baseline report suggesting the various projects that should be done to achieve a highly energy-efficient home, but didn't push it; in fact he agreed that, in our situation, skipping the test, starting with the attic now, and looking at other upgrades later made sense. The actual insulation crew came on time, was very professional, polite, quick, and neat -- and even used denim batting in an area that we hadn't included in the contract (which covered blown-in only) at no extra cost. On top of that, AHE arranged a hefty subsidy through RSEC that cut our overall cost to less than half the original estimate. And yes, boosting our attic insulation from R-11 to R38 made a BIG difference. I highly recommend Advanced Home Energy for home insulation and energy-efficiency consultations.

They were very practical and great to work with. My home is nearly 100 years old and I was not interested in tearing it down. They told me what they could and could not do, and they made a big difference. My home has settled over the last century, so they sealed up the necessary places. They found a problem with how my heater was installed and they were able to fix that. There were some windows that needed to have a great deal of sealing on them, which makes them difficult to open and close, but I was happy with their solutions overall. They were here and did a lot of work, so I did not feel that I was overcharged in any way. One of my neighbors just told me that they spent a fortune on double-paned windows, but Advanced Home Energy was very honest with me about what I would be spending and what I would have gotten out of it. I appreciated their good advice. They were very congenial, and I was very impressed with them.

I consulted by phone with Ori Skloot about my overall heating and cooling needs and emailed him pictures of my attic. He recommended cellulose fill on top of my existing fiberglass fill, and checking my heating system for efficiency and duct leaks, sealing them if necessary. They would raise the storage area in the attic to accommodate the increased height of the fill and enclose it with a raised edge. We discussed insulating the crawl space. Ori said his team would look at beams that had been cut to accommodate the storage area to see if they required strengthening. He emailed me a quote. He offered to match bids of other contractors, but his insulation price was already the lowest I had found. Other contractors had not offered to do the other work. I accepted everything but the crawl space. The crew arrived on time. The crew leads, both general contractors, reviewed the site. They recommended reinforcing the cut beams. They recommended replacing the "flooring" of the storage area with a stronger plywood that would hold our weight. They suggested filling over the original attic opening and proposed coupling a power outlet with the existing light switch when I said we often bring up an extension power cord through it. They found some live wires with uncapped ends, explained that they were a fire danger and suggested a fix. They laid out paper to protect the carpet, covered the heat vents with plastic tape and began the ducts test. They carried beams and boards to and from the attic, sawed and hammered. They pressurized the duct system and found no leaks, questioned me about how well the house heats, and determined that the furnace system was working well. They acquired new flooring at a nearby lumber company and installed it and the perimeter edge. They nailed blocks onto the cut rafters. After lunch, they brought a long hose through the house, up into the attic and pumped in the fill. At the end of the day, they decided to try the bathroom project. They drilled and filled one section, but the equipment had a mind of its own and they had to stop. Dvir returned a week later and completed the job. He applied a light coat of paint to the hole plugs, making them barely visible, washed down the work area, put the plants back, and washed not only the outside window, which had gotten dirty, but the inside one, which had not! Everyone was professional, personable and helpful. They worked carefully and cleaned up afterward, leaving my home relatively spotless. After the bulk of the work was done, I asked my husband if he had any sense of the madhouse this place had been during the day. He didn't have a clue. The whole house is now more comfortable with an even temperature upstairs and down. It is much quieter and I can't wait to see my winter heating bills. I simply couldn't be happier with the work AHE performed for me. I am pleased to recommend them without qualification. The energy savings are averging 25% per month.
Description of Work: Removed 3/4" 3-ply plywood used as attic storage area, installed new 2x6 cross beams to accommodate increased height of fill, replaced flooring with 1/2" 5-ply that is strong enough to stand on and install a 2x4 perimeter edge. Block reinforced rafters that had been cut by a previous contractor. Added cellulose fill on top of existing old fiberglass insulation. Pressurized the duct system and checked for leakage, sealing the duct system as necessary. "Drilled and filled" the exposed space under the master bath floor.
