My husband and I used Ronan to install new hardwoods in our home to the tune of $15 thousand dollars nine years ago and were happy with the work. One would think that a repeat customer would be treated with particular consideration and gratitude. I know of what I speak when it comes to good business practices -- my father was in business for himself for 60 years and I myself have been self-employed for nearly 30 years, in two businesses. Now I need laminate flooring installed in my new office, for health reasons. I called Ronan and I thought we'd made a very nice reconnection when he came to take the info for an estimate. I like to establish mutual respect and human kindness with anyone who is doing work for me and I listened to him talk at length about his youth, his wife, his children, extended family, life, etc. He knew that I needed to get moving on this project because I signed the lease on this place right before COVID-19 and then had to work from home for 12 weeks until the governor deemed me an essential worker. Ronan himself said that he understood my desire to move quickly since I've had to pay rent every month for a place I haven't even able been able to use yet; I believed his words because he's also self-employed, so I presumed he understood the financial bind these circumstances put me in. Then the problems began: 1) The estimate was late 2) When it came, I accepted it and then heard nothing back for SIX days. I had to email him again and he replied that he'd look at his schedule and get back to me that day re: scheduling the carpet removal. He did NOT get back to me that day. 3) I emailed two days later to ask what was happening. No reply. Two MORE days later, I left two voicemails and sent another email. Finally, he replied by email, saying he'd contact me the next day to schedule the carpet removal. FOUR MORE DAYS passed with no word from him. On the fifth day, he reappeared, sending an email that he could rip out the carpet this week. I agreed, only because I felt that IT WAS BETTER TO GO WITH THE DEVIL I KNOW THAN THE ONE I DON'T -- I SO didn't want to have to start from scratch with other shady tradesmen. We finally set up a time for tomorrow for the carpet removal and then THIS EVENING, the day before the job was to FINALLY start, he emailed me that HE MADE A TYPO on his original bid to the tune of wanting to charge me ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE now! The ONLY reason I'd let these games and insanity go on for so long before tonight was because I TRUSTED him (since he'd worked for us before) to ultimately be a stand-up guy, even if it was just to say that he couldn't do the job or wasn't interested after all -- how hard is it to say that to someone and let them move on? Instead, he strung me along. All told since Ronan first came to see the office, I have now lost A MONTH of time during which I could have been getting bids from other companies and moving ahead with this critical project. And I'M PAYING YET ANOTHER MONTH'S RENT WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO USE THE OFFICE -- ALL BECAUSE OF RONAN. Ronan, your behavior is exceedingly unprofessional, disrespectful, unacceptable, rude, and totally lacking in integrity. How you have handled this is despicable. This has been a month-long process of sheer lunacy with you! I thought you were one of the few good guys left in the trades. I was unbelievably wrong. I have not been regularly active on Yelp in a long time and I prefer not to be (~70% of my reviews are positive -- I prefer NOT to write negative ones). But I needed a place to vent and for others to know about my experience so that they can avoid Shannon Hardwood Flooring. Notice (in her review here below) that Nanci L. in Redondo Beach had a similar experience with Ronan. And we're just two people who took the time to share. I'd bet my life that there are others who just didn't write about what they went through; I know because I have often not written negative reviews for entities that deserved them when I just didn't have the time or energy. But this situation has made me so furious and frustrated and has caused me SO MUCH STRESS that I needed to get it off my chest so that I can move on. DON'T USE SHANNON HARDWOOD FLOORING AND DON'T TRUST RONAN.

Shady business practices, do not hire!! Was hired by my Contractor but came to me for payment directly, and now says that I asked if I could pay him (which makes no sense, why would I offer to pay him). Will not assist me in litigation against my Contractor, even thought the Contractor would not pay him for work he performed. Beware!!!!!

Response from SHANNON HARDWOOD FLOORS
This customer is in litigation with a general contractor. The customer is upset that I will not submit a letter for his litigation (nor will I submit a letter for the general contractor involved). Shannon Hardwood floors completed the flooring portion of this project over a year ago in June, 2018.

Ronan was great - professional, prompt, and courteous. He did a wonderful job on the floor. I would definitely hire him again and highly recommend him.
Description of Work: We refinished the hardwood floor in the great room and bar area to match the adjacent spaces. The flloor had sun and some water damage in the area near the doors to the deck which are usually open to the weather as well as discoloration from the sun.

I did not go with them because they knew that i had water damage and they knew that i was using an insurance company so their prices went up. That was less than the original price when i first installed it. So when i came to redo it, they went up. I did some research and got some estimates, they didn't meet my quote.

It came down to Shannon and one other vendor, both of which were highly professional and we felt good about using. We chose the other vendor because the price difference was decently wide, and Shannon could not match. Since then, we've seen a couple of Shannon's jobs at other houses. In hindsight, we probably should have paid the extra $ and gone with Shannon, as I think the quality of the job would have been better.

Shannon Hardwood Floors Company did good work. Their pricing was fair; it came to less than $10000. The workers were friendly. They were professional. They had good knowledge. Their workmanship was very good.

Ronan did the estimate for the job and he and 2 helpers completed it. Took a while because the new wood he was installing in the entryway had to sit in the house for 10 days to adjust to the atmosphere of the house. After wood was seasoned, he started removing the carpet. Then it was necessary to replace about 60 boards because of dog pee stains. That added to the estimated cost. Boards were replaced, patches were made and entire floor was sanded. From the point they started working on the floors to finish was about a week. Ronan recommended certain shades of stain and showed us samples on the sanded floors. Floors are beautiful - a great job.
Description of Work: Removed all carpeting to existing hardwood floor. Replaced stone entryway with new hardwood. Sanded, stained and sealed all floors. Approx 1,800 sq ft.

Shannon's bid was $300 less than another competitor so I went with Shannon. His crew worked really hard. It took them longer than expected to chisel out portions of the existing floor so that full length boards could be added. The new floor was to adjoin new bedroom carpeting. Ronan Ualionain, the owner, advised me on the carpet man's date and our move-in date. Later, Ronan realized he couldn't get three coats of poly on the floor in time so the carpeting and move were extended. Ronan didn't want to give any advice on the cure period for the floor. Because of liability, he didn't want to tell me when it would be best for me to move in after the floors were done. All he said was that "the longer the better" and "some people don't have your option to wait." He gave me no advice on floor care and left me to fend for myself. Ronan doesn't answer his emails for a couple of days and he once showed up an hour late for a meeting with me at the house that had been scheduled two hours earlier. This may be routine for floor contractors. The floors were beautiful when done, but there were some glitches: the threshold that Ronan installed between the family room and the bedroom had a raised edge so that you could trip over it. Ronan said he couldn't install a regular "reducer" (already existing between the old wood floor and other bedrooms) because he didn't have enough room and because the wood floor extended too far under the doorway. It seemed to me that no planning had been done for the threshold. Ronan blamed the carpet man, but Ronan gave no instructions for the carpet man. I think his men didn't want to cut out a board and do it right. There was some back and forth and, finally, Ronan installed a reducer. If the bedroom door is closed, you can see the wood coming under the door, but that's better than tripping over a raised threshold. A raised nail was pounded flat and left (rather than taken out and filled) so that I can see it occasionally. After the first coat of poly, I found many spots that were rough, pitted or had hair and other things embedded. I marked them with blue tape and the crew took care of them. Ronan waited an extra week to put in the shoe molding and I had hoped to get that done and painted before I moved in. When his men completed the shoe molding, two pieces were cut and set in place, but not nailed. Ronan told me he was going to bring cherry colored shoe molding for around my fireplace, but in a mix-up with my handyman, Ronan never brought the cherry molding. He didn't follow up with a phone call or email regarding the job. When I got his invoice, I mentioned the molding. He replied that he would gladly drop it by, but I decided it would be easier to have my handyman buy and install it. His crew was good at clean-up and my complaints are minor.

Referred by our "project manager" whom we have dealt with for 8 years. Clean license, workman's comp and a current bond. Bid verbally on site to our "project manager." $9.00/SF when he found he was dealing with us he marked it up to 9.30/SF. He measured at (approx) 500 SF for (approximately) $4650.00. We decided not to do hall so he was to deduct 50 SF (hall is actually 52SF.) He told our "project manager" to have them put the cabinets in. But upon billing he tried to bill us for 49.96SF never installed (under the cabinets.) Now he wants to give us a credit for 7.00/SF ($350.00) for the hallway credit after charging 9.30SF ($483.60) in the bid. He claims he doesn't quote by square feet, but that is all he quoted to us both verbally & in writing. He did not do a proper contract, or accurate billing and he refused to get a city license and shut our entire project down for 3 days. He called our "project manager" saying "they had to stick together." Our guy refused. He told me on 2/22/08 that "Shannon hardwood floors is not responsible for cleanup, the homeowner or general contractor bears that responsibility." This is in total contradiction to what he is claiming.
Description of Work: Bid was for (approximately) 500 SF hardwood floors. Estimated (approximately) $4650.00. It was for "living-room-kitchen-hallway". We deleted the hallway in favor of carpet for noise and warmth. Ronan agreed to delete it. We assumed an exact measurement would be on the final bill. We still don't have a final bill with actual SF installed. Bid was for $9.30 per SF (after quoting $9.00.) His workers, for the most part, are good, especially the foreman. Ronan is lacking in professional ethics & keeping his word. The final clean up that was promised was NEVER done. Response was "its not his job...its the general contractors." Yet his foreman said they always clean up. He called it a "construction site." It is a home being upgraded. We, the owners, are having the work done. Finishes all completed. He was 2nd to last vendor in. Left fine dust all over everything, white ceiling fans, brand new cabinets, wood blinds etc. No covers put on anything. No respect for our property.

Response from SHANNON HARDWOOD FLOORS
This customer sent a check for over $900.00 less than is owed for this job. The bid was NOT by square foot and there is no square foot price in the bid. We do not give a generic price by the foot because some areas (like kitchens, for example) take more time and thus cost more. The customer has determined her own price for this job, after agreeing to our bid and after the work has been performed. Our final bill did take out the charge for the hallway. This house was undergoing remodeling and there were multiple unlicensed sub contractors performing non-permitted work. It was the customer's "project manager" who did not obtain a city license. We did tape off our work area and clean up OUR work area as is our policy. We have learned that this customer has not paid for much of the work they had done on this house but only our company can respond to and pursue payment, as most of the work was performed by unlicensed contractors. You can see from our other reviews in Angie's List, we are a quality company performing quality work.

It went great. Took only a couple of days. The owner, Ronan, showed great patience when I sent back the first flooring I ordered after deciding I wanted a darker color. He simply ordered out the new color and took away the old. The installers removed carpet and baseboard. They took care in the moving of furniture. There was absolutely no mess after they left. They cleaned up and hauled away all debris. My floors are beautiful.
Description of Work: Shannon Hardwood Floors installed prefinished hardwood floors in my 385 sq. ft. bedroom and closet. The product and installation are excellent. New baseboards were installed also, and very well done.
