Gary is a painting contractor we asked to bid on a home repair caused by water damage. The job involved patching and painting walls, installing new wood flooring, cabinet carpentry and some electrical work that was incidental but important. Gary came to the house to discuss the details, bid the job promptly, called to follow up on the bid, and was very helpful in giving us an understanding of what had to be done. Some of the work was outside his wheel house, raising the cost, and the job was awarded elsewhere, but his manner of dealing with us, helpful ideas and responsiveness were awesome. I really wanted to give him the work, and if you ask for work that his company does, you will want to as well. I’m already considering him for another job at a rental property.
Description of Work: Gary bid on a major repair job at our home caused by water damage.

The house was spray painted and then the trim was painted by hand later. I needed some fixture replaced, front and side porch. A motion sensor light was installed on the garage as well. Two of my rain gutter also needed repair work were done by them. . Also, two door bell ringers were installed for me. On a second job, they came back and stucco a small wall that I share with my neighbor. They used the same color as my house. The front yard looks really nice. Excellent job. I am going to have them build a railing for my front and side porch. This will make it safer because the steps are quite high and someone could fall and injure themselves..
Description of Work: First they power washed the house and windows in preparation for painting. Later the windows needed sanding and scraping because the old paint on the aluminum framing was peeling off. The rain gutters were also primed and painted. The dug about 4" deep trench around the stucco, so it could be painted there.

From beginning to end the job took 3 days. Sometimes two crew were deployed; other times a single worker was present. The workers or worker sustained effort in a diligent manner. Work was completed quickly and efficiently, and at the close of each day clean up was performed to minimize the impact on our family. We were kept informed when workers would arrive in the morning. They were punctual and courteous. The quality was outstanding: smooth surfaces, clean lines at color breaks, and no unwanted drips or painting "outside the lines." Were were quite pleased with the final result.
Description of Work: Gary Kassabian and his experienced crew painted a large and a small bathroom. They "converted" existing oil-based enamel finishes to latex semi-gloss finishes. The principal steps included: 1) taping and covering floors, vanities and other areas requiring protection from the paint. 2) sanding the walls and ceilings to "degloss" the oil-based enamel finish. 3) making necessary patches and repairs to the surfaces to be painted, and sanding as necessary. 4) applying one coat of a bonding primer. 5) applying two coats of latex semi-gloss finish to ceilings, walls, doors and wood trim.

This large job was completed in five days. In the initial trim demolition and prep phases, four workers were deployed. They all worked diligently and efficiently. As the work progressed to installation of new baseboards and casings, and the application of texture and finishes, the crew deployed varied from two to three. Again, sustained effort and no wasted motion. At the close of each day, the area was cleaned up. We were informed when workers would arrive the next day. Without fail, everyone was punctual and courteous. Gary in particular was responsive to our questions. He spent considerable time discussing the choice of colors with us, and helped us reach decisions. He also accompanied us to Moldings Unlimited to help us decide on the particular baseboards and casings we were going to have installed. The quality of the end result met our expectations. Smooth uniform surfaces; clean lines between color breaks, and no drips or paint deposited "outside the lines."
Description of Work: Gary Kassabian and his experienced employees upgraded the appearance of our entry foyer, an adjacent small bathroom, a coat closet, our living room and our dining room by removing "builder grade" base boards and door casings, installing new base boards and casings, and in each room painting the walls, ceilings, wood trim and doors. In the living room, foyer and dining room, the work was challenging because we have high vaulted ceilings and correspondingly tall walls. With respect to the base boards and door casings, the work involved: 1) removing and disposing of existing base boards and casings. 2) installing new base boards and casings. 3) as required, patching and sanding nail holes and applying caulk to the new basen board and casing installations. 4) applying two coats of semi-gloss finish. With respect to the interior painting, the work involved: 1) taping and covering areas requiring protection from sanding dust and paint. 2) consolidating furniture in middles of rooms and protecting with taped down plastic covers. 3) removing light fixtures, and plug and switch covers. 4) patching/repairing holes, cracks and visible wall board imperfections including corroding nail heads and seams manifesting house settling. 5) sanding doors and window jams to "de-gloss" existing oil-based enamel finish. 6) applying caulk and one coat of bonding primer to doors and window jams. 7) applying texturing to the walls and ceilings. 8) applying two coats of finish paint to ceilings (flat), walls (flat), and wood trim (semi-gloss) in various colors and accent tones.

Gary came to our home and was generous with his time in discussing the options for protecting our new redwood fence from the elements while allowing the natural grain of the wood to show through. We originally had a different brand of stain in mind, but Gary strongly recommended another company's product. We are very glad he did, now that we have seen the excellent results. Gary and a helper worked well together to complete the job on a very warm and dry day. Only very skilled painters could have completed this project and achieved the great results they did, given how quickly this type of acrylic stain tends to dry. We wouldn't hesitate to use GK Painting again for other painting or staining needs, and would certainly feel comfortable recommending them to friends and neighbors.

Gary was quick to respond to my voicemail inquiring a bid for the service. Gary is very professional and knowledgable. Once he learned that new wood exterior doors were recently installed, he was extremely helpful in working around his schedule (and our schedule) to make sure it was completed in a timely manner. Gary and his team executed the job on time and our doors and paint work look AMAZING! I cannot begin to count how many compliments we have received on our new doors. Gary also does a great job taking the time to educate his clients on proper maintenance and care for the work completed. We are so thankful we found GK painting. We know exactly who to call for our next painting and staining needs for both exterior/interior work. Highly recommend!

I have been a homeowner for 27 years. I have had good painters and bad painter, but Gary is the Best painter. I have high standards and expectations. Gary and his guys had to move heavy leather sectional furniture around. They covered everything for protection. Previously, I had used oil based paint so there was a lot of sanding and priming to convert over to the new healthier acrylic paints. It's a lot of work. Gary's guys were really nice, very polite, hard working, and honest. Gary takes pride in his work and wants his clients to be happy with the work. Gary is very detail oriented. He supervises the workers really well and is not above getting his hands dirty. I will definitely be using Gary again.

Gary from GK painting was a pleasure to work with, timely, efficient, nice product and true and accurate with their quote. I have a two-story home, and they painted the first floor ceiling, and repaired lots of holes we made from adding in reset lights. I had a small bathroom that was painted ametallic bronze from the previous owner. Gary covered over the tough metallicpaint, and gave me a beautiful light aqua bathroom. It looks great!I would highly recommend them if you are looking for a great paint job.

Our job was relatively small did not have a time limit for completion. From day one when we met Gary and received the quote, up to the weeks that followed and then the job completion, Gary kept in close contact keeping us updated of when he would be buy and what would be done that day. Gary has a good crew that were professional, polite and tidy. All paint, tarps, etc, were cleaned up and stored away and out of sight at the end of the day.

Gary had repainted our house a year earlier. When we installed a new roof this summer there was significant repair work needed to the facia and decking. I contacted Gary to paint the new material to match the work a year earlier. His crew did an excellent job and were very good about leaving the job site clean. The work was done in only two visits one 2-3 hr visit to do the power washing, then one long workday a few weeks later to do the painting. When it became clear that the amount of work needed was substantially less than had been estimated in Gary's bid he was forthright in adjusting the final invoice accordingly.

Terrible. Angie's List needs to seriously delve into these glowing reviews. I usually have had good experiences with Angies List in the past and I was one of their best fans when talking to neighbors, co-workers, family, etc. But lately have had bad luck with the top contractors we've used. BTW, I do have all the photos and documentation of redoing the work that Gary's workers did. I don't know what they told Gary they did, but it was obvious these workers were not skilled painters. We paid Gary for the terrible "prep" work, but are pursuing this with the CSLB as well as others. After telling Gary we were disappointed with the work and would not go further with his services, he became irate and was very disrespectful.
Description of Work: DO NOT USE! He subs all his work out to people that obviously have never painted. Gary shows up and tells you he does all the work and how he's there everyday, but it is a pack of lies! We hired him to paint our complete downstairs. Family room, laundry room, bath, bedroom, and hall. He showed up the first day with two of his "workers", which is odd since he claims on his license that he does not have any employees. He tells us that he has another job at the docks and he has this business on the side so he has to work there for the day and instructs his workers to start on the prepping of 3 doors and painting a ceiling in the bathroom. We should have stopped there, but agreed to go ahead and see how they would do. With some refining they did a good job on the prep, but when it came to the final painting, it was awful!! There we're brush strokes and uneven roller marks. We have since had to have everything stripped and redone. We like quality and do not mind paying for it and we thought we were going to get that with GK Painting.

Response from GK Painting
She had a flood from a pipe which burst in her walls upstairs and flooded the downstairs. She called me for a quote to repaint the downstairs family room, hallways, office, bathroom, staircase closet, doors, casings, and baseboards. The damaged area from the flood was only the family room. After emailing the estimate, we scheduled the work. When I got there to start, she asked for discounts for every item. I worked with her and we agreed on a price. At this time she had no flooring and no baseboards and told me she was waiting to get floors. I told her we can start the ceiling in the bathroom, prep the walls in all areas, and prep and paint the doors. The doors had roller texture marks and run marks and they were painted with water base paint that was applied from a previous painter she had used. The doors were panel hollow core with grain texture. She asked me if we can remove the roller marks and runs from the doors. I told her we cannot excessively sand these doors because water base doesn't feather edge real well and by the time we remove the marks by sanding, it would flatten the grain texture. She told me not to sand excessively because she did not want to loose the grain texture. I instructed my workers on the scope of the work. They worked 2 days and were done with patching, sanding and painting the bathroom ceiling, doors, staircase closet, and all the walls were patched and sanded ready for the second and final stages. I emailed and asked when she would like me to return to finish. She returned my email stating that she would let me know in a few days when the flooring was done and that, "The guys did a great job on the doors and we are very happy with them." At this stage, we were standing by for the flooring guy to come and install the floors. After 3 weeks I had not heard from her, so I emailed her to see if the flooring company had installed the flooring and baseboards and find out if she was ready for the second and final stages. At this point I had never received a deposit or any payment for the work already done. She told me that they still had not had flooring installed. I asked for a progress payment for the work already done. At this time she replied that the work I was asking payment for had not been done and that the doors had marks on them and she was not happy with the work. I asked if I could come take a look and she said no. She did not want me to come finish the walls and she denied me the opportunity to come and look at the doors, even after several attempts to work around her schedule. She told me she would send a check for an amount that she felt was acceptable for what work had been done. I have all email documentation of correspondence between myself and this client, including the email where she stated she was happy with the work. I feel that I made every reasonable effort to resolve this issue with the client. There was nothing I could do since she would not let me return to the job. I am confused as to why she told me everything looked great and then, when I asked for payment, she told me the job was terrible. I am also confused as to why she wants a refund when she is the one who decided how much she would pay me for the work. The amount due was $1,375.00 and she only sent a check for $1,000.00

Gary and his team were awesome to work with. He did work in almost every single area of our house, and it was all done within one week. His bid was very reasonable, and he was certainly the most interested in our work, more so than anyone else. He helped me with colors for my baby girl's room, who knew that pink could be such a difficult color, and so easy to get wrong? He picked out 2 pinks that I would never have landed on, and it is PERFECT, exactly what I wanted, not pep to, not Disney princess, not bubblegum, more like ancient walls in India. It is just beautiful. His guys are very sweet, very professional, very pleasant to have around. They went so far as to watch the baby while I scrambled around getting our things together to leave for the day, and bringing in groceries they saw sitting in my car. They were absolutely wonderful to us, start to finish. We are thrilled with the results, and have a list of new things to ask him to do!

A crew of 4-5 showed up on time for five days. They paid a great deal of attention to detail in the prep and it shows as I cannot see where they patched. They sanded and caulked all window trim and baseboards. The actual painting went quickly due to their meticulous prep. Gary's crew cleaned up at the end of each day and were respectful of belongings and covered them well. We had a great experience with Gary... he's very personable, responsive, and easy to work with. We highly recommend GK Painting.

The quality of the work GK Painting did is top notch. Many of our friends have already commented on how great the house looks. My favorite aspect of GK Painting was working with Gary directly. He obviously cared that we, as the customer, were happy and he helped up choose our colors and options carefully. He was also very responsive when needed in responding to phone calls, emails and text messages. We've worked with many contractors on our home and GK Painting was the easiest to work with and they did a great job.
Description of Work: Gary and his team painted the whole exterior of our 2 story home and also painted the fence that runs along the border of our property. Working with Gary was great. He was professional from beginning to end. He showed up on time to review the job, and provided a very detailed bid. Although we did get other quotes for less (which is the reason I rated the price as Fair - we didn't feel it was either Excellent or Lousy), we felt more comfortable that Gary was the guy for the job, and we were right. He was professional, courteous, on-time, reliable, responsive, cleaned up when finished, and most importantly: he did a quality job. He also recommended an electrician he works with closely for some electrical work we needed done. We are very happy with the end result, and we would absolutely use Gary in the future.

Gary and his crew were there on time and worked to get this job done in one day, knowing how big of an inconvenience it is to have people and materials in your bedroom and living room. The attention to detail (filling nail holes, caulking, etc.) was excellent. They moved all furniture and put it back without issue. Gary has followed up with us to do some minor touch-up work after carpet was installed, even though he's already been paid for the job. Will definitely use on any future interior paint job.

I was very impressed with Gary, his crew and the work they performed. They showed up on time and performed the work efficiently and expediently. Gary and his crew were great to work with. I appreciated the fact that Gary made some good suggestions and gave me good ideas for modifications and changes. I had my dropped ceiling taken out and made ready for new canned lighting. Gary's crew did the reframing and minor drywall patching and re-texturiszing.reframed which Gary did and it turned out great. He also repainted all of my kitchen cabinets and painted the new kitchen cabinet doors I had made. Gary was very friendly and personable and eager to please and accommodate me in whatever changes had to be made during the course of the remodel in my kitchen. I would definitely use him again in the future.
