Description of Work: RE: Sunroom installed by California Sunrooms Keep in mind throughout these comments that I had to call California Sunrooms 95 percent of the time. They rarely called me first. 1. Contract was signed 25 Apr 2011. An existing small sunroom was to be demolished & hauled away. A concrete slab was to be poured for the room. It called for carpet that I would purchase to be installed in the room with California Sunrooms to pick it up at Lowes. Dish wiring was to be installed in the wall, along with electrical wiring for plugs & switches. Dealer was to provide an inside sconce light, 2 ceiling fans, 6 electrical outlets, & remove existing exterior light & place it outside glass sliding door of the room, among a few other things. The work was to begin the 1st week of June. 2. I called them on 31 May 2011 to find out what was going on & was informed that concrete was to be poured that day. Framing had been done more than a week before that. 3. I asked the workers if they were going to use something to protect the outside wall, since that would be the inside wall to the room, & was assured that they would. I opened the back gate & showed them where tools could be washed off, but later found them washing them off in the lawn - my lawn turned white & many rocked were in the yard. A glass sliding door, screen, & the wall were splattered with concrete as high as 4 feet. Nothing was attached to the wall to protect it. I, later, spent 2 hours cleaning & could not get it all off. The room installers later scrubbed the screen & door - almost got them clean. According to the County Inspector, they later had to add a “smooth” one foot extension outside the door because what they laid originally did not meet code. Even though they redid the extension, it was so sloppy that I had it demolished & replaced by someone else (at an added expense). Within 6 weeks the concrete had multiple cracks, which proved that a very weak mix was used for the concrete. I have never seen such inadequate quality work in my life. 4. The concrete crew is the same ones who later laid the carpeting. When they were laying the carpeting & getting ready to cut a strip for a small patch area I asked if they had matched the pattern & was again assured that they had. Naturally, it did not match & I would have ended up with 3 pieces cut to fill an approximately 2’ x 16’ area. I refused to let them lay it, so they bought a new piece of carpeting & I matched the pieces to go together. Again, I have never seen such bad quality of work. The edges are jagged & do not come all the way to the wall in many spots - it has been glued down. The glue smelled toxic, so I complained, & was told that it was the same glue they always used. However, no one ever gave me the name so I could check on it. It is now more than 2 months later & I can still smell the glue. I furnished water & sodas for all the workers - approx 70 bottles of water & 24 sodas. This crew walked off with all the recycling. THIS CREW GETS AN F. 5. The 2 man crew that erected the building, put in the wiring, & windows were very nice young men. They ended up cleaning up after the concrete mess. They, however, failed to include the dish wiring inside the wall, & failed to install our existing exterior motion light at the exit door. Instead they put up a small exterior light that would stay on all night if I turn it on. It was hung in a location that makes it impossible to exchange the lights. The rain gutters & eaves were cut to allow room to erect the sunroom, however, there was a gap on each side for water to run straight down the side of the house, & holes were left on the roof of the new structure next to the house that left room for rats & birds to build their nests. I made the workers close up the holes - very crudely done. Apparently, there was little or no supervision, because if there had been, the contract would have been followed. The ceilings were too low to have ceiling fans, so they bought us 2 tower fans, which was fine. 6. After my many complaints, the company owner came out to inspect the work that was done. He apologized for the horrible installation & then told me that they do not normally lay carpeting & that Peter Gasca said I insisted that they install it for us. Not true. During our working on the contract, he apparently pretended to call the owner for a price & then offered the installation for $100. When I showed him the spaces at the roof line, he completely missed my point of not having a continuous rain gutter & the ugly patch job & had one of the workers paint the open end of the facia board. They’re not painters either - it did not completely cover the wood. I do all of my own painting. 7. As a small compensation, he offered to have someone install window blinds that I purchased. He did do that & the person did a great job. Throughout this entire project I was in contact with Wanda more than anyone else. Appointments would be made & no one would show up numerous times. All of these times, I had to leave the gate open to allow them access while I took my disabled husband to doctors & dialysis, leaving our belongings exposed to anyone who walked into the back yard. I would have to call her to find out what happened. She would come up with unbelievable excuses & say she was just getting ready to call me. Towards the end of the project she went on vacation with her family for at least 2 weeks & the company stopped running. During that time, I emailed pictures & a list of most of the problems to the company. No one could do anything without her say so. When I complained about this, her comment was, “I was on vacation”. I have attached a copy of my notes & correspondence as proof of all of the above. My overall grade for California Sunrooms is: 1. Concrete work & strength of mix F 0 2. Carpeting installation F 0 3. Keeping in contact with me D 1 4. Following contract to the letter C 2 5. Satisfaction with completed room C 2 Overall grade 1 = D Sincerely, Patricia Williams 916-383-0283
