"Thank you for your review. Remodel Works Bath & Kitchen appreciates our customers’ feedback. In business since 1984 and with over 8,000 renovations in San Diego County, Remodel Works is always evolving and working to provide the best possible customer service in our industry. Our 29 years of experience has taught us that by having a strict evaluation process for every customer, not only will we provide exactly what our clients are looking for but within their budget as well. Our ultimate goal is to treat every customer the way we want to be treated. To achieve that goal we must take the time to visit each potential job to understand the scope of the project. We cannot judge the extent of any project by drawings or phone conversations. After visiting the client’s home and evaluating the project our designer determined that this project could not be handled by Remodel Works and suggested three reputable companies who could achieve the work the client was requesting. We, at Remodel Works, would love nothing more than to be everyone’s contractor for every home improvement. However, the truth is that we know our competencies and we don’t undertake projects where we are not the best fit for the customer. To that end, we find that being upfront and honest with our customers is the most sincere and effective approach. However, if we are the right fit we provide our clients with FREE measures, FREE estimates and a certain amount of FREE design time. All we ask in return is that our clients visit our showroom when we present the estimate so that they have the opportunity to see the products and materials we have included in their estimate. We have found over the years that our clients appreciate that they can come to our 3,000 sq. ft. showroom and do all of their shopping in one place. If there is anything else we can do to make this experience better for you, please let us know and we will be happy to assist you. Thank you again for reviewing Remodel Works Bath & Kitchen. Sincerely, The Remodel Works Team"
I appreciated the careful attention the designer, John De Luca, took to measure everything, assist with problem areas such as flooring solutions and make very helpful suggestions about the type of cabinets and drawers I would want to have in my new kitchen so I would end up with a very useful and beautiful work space.
Prior to the start of the job, I received an unexpected phone call from the owner of the company thanking me for my business. Then, my Designer, John De Luca and my Project Manager, Royce Ramswick came to my home prior to the job start to make sure everything was properly measured, identified and there were no visible surprises in the work that needed to be done.
Also prior to construction, I received a very detailed work schedule listing everything that was to be done, the date it would be completed and the person/persons who would be performing the work. On days when the projects underway would be especially messy or noisy, I was notified so I could leave the house if necessary. My Project Manager also worked closely with the painting and flooring sub-contractors to make sure everyone would be on time and on schedule. Materials were delivered prior to the start of the job and my project manager came over to take inventory and make sure everything was on hand to complete the work.
All the work was done as represented. Everything was completed according to the schedule I was given at the start of the job. Any and every problem was handled immediately and the schedule was never impacted. The crew members, Seth, Paul and Gerry were polite, patient with my questions and kept everything as neat and clean as I expected a "demolition/construction" zone to be. My Project Manager regularly monitored the project and when I had a question or issue, he managed everything right away and made sure we understood each other. I initiated a couple of minor changes during the job and these changes were handled by John and Royce without hesitation to my complete satisfaction.
From start to finish this was a very good experience. I would wholeheartedly recommend Remodel Works for a kitchen remodel job, and plan to use them again when I'm ready to remodel my bathroom.
What initially caught our attention about Remodel Works Kitchen and Bath was the consistently stellar write ups that we saw about the company on Angie?s List. The extremely high level of satisfaction, which others related about every aspect of their experience,
was compelling.
We cannot begin to tell you how pleased we are that we selected Remodel Works Kitchen and Bath, and with the entire process we underwent. As difficult this was to go through, under the circumstances, we can?t see how it could have been done more easily, smoothly or professionally.
A company reflects the values and professionalism of the owner or owners. We cannot speak for everyone who works Remodel Works, but we can comment on those with whom we interacted. Just as an orchestra is only as good as the conductor who leads it, the renovation project was like a piece of music conducted in two parts. The first part was conducted by Mary Jennings, who led us through the complex process of figuring out what we wanted and how best to select all the many, many individual components to be able to arrive at what was to be constructed and placed.
Mary showed interest in us personally and was friendly, patient, honest, showed great integrity and always had a smile on her
face. It was obvious to us that she loved what she did and was excited, energetic and eager in helping us. She applied her considerable education, background and experience to helping us arrive at a finished product that was one of our choosing, although to begin with we had no idea of exactly what we were looking for.
We immediately felt at ease with Mary in the showroom and at the follow-on meeting in our home. She looked the areas over and went to work helping us see the possibilities that there were for our home. She took us step by step through the lengthy decision making process for each of the areas to be renovated. There were so many, many decisions to be made and she guided us through each step. She familiarized us with the options and gave us outstanding advice, so as to help guide our choices. At each step along the way we were fully kept aware of the costs involved and the time schedule that would be required. She met us at appliance show rooms, slab lots and made suggestions for us to explore on our own. She went out of her way to educate us to the range of options that we might consider.
Once all of the decisions had been made on appliances, products, materials, colors, etc. the project was scheduled, and we were
advised that Lance Hawkins would be our project manager. The next step was to have a preconstruction meeting with him in our home for him to go over the project with us.
Lance arrived at our home and we were thus introduced to the person who was to conduct us through the second complex part of this process, the actual construction phase. He looked over the detailed plans that had been drawn up and went over them with us in every detail. Nothing was left to chance. Once the construction started, we were introduced, over time, to the actual technicians who were to do the construction. All of the workers were skilled, experienced men who went out of their way to keep things clean and respect the integrity of our home. Lance was a joy to work with. What we learned about Lance, as a project
manager, was that he is honest, has high integrity, a good values system, is very organized, a detail person, plans ahead, and is a very skilled person. He stays constantly on top of things and keeps the owners fully informed about what is being accomplished. The outstanding results of the construction phase of the remodel were directly the result of his constant and meticulous
oversight of the project.
I applaud the value system displayed by Remodel Works Kitchen and Bath, as seen in their employees. They are a credit to the company and the company is a standout in a profession that many people have found deep frustration with.
We feel very fortunate to have worked with Remodel Works Kitchen and Bath and especially to have had Mary Jennings and Lance Hawkins as the co-captains of the team that resulted in such an outstanding renovation to our home.
The workmen were very curteous, and cleaned up after each days work was done. All scrap materials not requested to be left for me were carried away
I would certainly recommend this contractor for kitchen remodels.
From the first meeting to finish all personel were very professional. The time line we were given was
executed to the tee. All phases, all workmen, were polite, very effieient, CLEAN. The job took a total of maybe six days and at the end of each day the workmen left the house with the work area very neat and clean. The cutting of tile outside was also kept very neat. We have had other projects done by other contractors in the past, and have been very disappointed by the sloppy job done. We will never have anyone other than REMODEL WORKS in our home in the future. Sorry we did not find them sooner. I highly recommend this company, and my shower is absolutely beautiful..I later met with Eric at the showroom to decide upon materials. The staff were all courteous, and the meeting was timely. Remodel Works has an excellent and diverse showroom with a wide array of quality products.
My project manager was Royce, who met me at my home prior to work starting. He was always professional and punctual. All of the work went well, with no hiccups, and work was completed on time. I was kept consistently in the loop regarding the work schedule.
My only negative thing to say about Remodel Works is that they were more expensive that I had hoped. But I ultimately decided on them to provide contracting services because they are a well established firm with a long history of providing services in Southern California using the same business name. Their work is guaranteed, and they use products from well-known manufacturers who provide additional guarantees to the products. The overall value of Remodel Works when you factor in the piece of mind that you're paying for quality workmanship and quality products is exceptional.
Price: Without mentioning a specific budget (but conveying our need for a budget-friendly estimate), our quote was what we had hoped - especially given the company's reputation and recommendation. We thought it would be higher. We financed half the total, which made the project feasible for us.
Quality: Upgraded cabinet (with soft-closing drawers), brushed nickel fixtures, and matching framed mirror. Marble counter-top selected from remnants - cracked upon delivery, but repaired nicely. Comfort height toilet with elongated seat - appreciate the difference this makes! Tub and surround is a basic white with clean lines - the easiest to change in the future should we need to (for elder care concerns). All of these expanded our vision for the remodel and enhanced our home, without straying from what we desired - a simple and durable next-generation bathroom for one older child and occasional guests.
Responsiveness: Immediate and attentive with one small caveat. We considered adding hallway laminate (because the old hallway carpet could not be reattached to the new tile); but, a weekend delay in communication with Remodel Works (and a poor experience with a different flooring vendor in the meantime) postponed the plan. We now consider the hallway project part of a future remodel that may involve the Master Bath. Also, our concerns about using marble in the bathroom (based on the Sept. 2012 issue of Consumer Reports) were addressed clearly by email and by phone. Glad we stayed with marble - easy elegance that will not be subjected to the criteria mentioned in the CR article. Not for our bathroom anyway.
Punctuality: Early arrival each day, and waited outside until 7:30 am. For special installation of repaired counter top, we were unaware of a minor 45 minute delay to confirm materials. As long as it was going to be completed that day, which it was, we were fine!
Professionalism: The best part of our experience! We posted our daily schedule on the fridge so that we were aware of every step of the remodel without needing to stop the crew to ask. The entire crew was easy-going, articulate, even funny. One crew member even remembered me as having visited another job in the neighborhood a few months back (yes, at our friends' home). We always knew who was assigned to our home each day, which eliminated minor stranger anxiety, except for our all-bark-no-bite Jack Russell terrier! (He calmed down eventually.) Each was considerate of working in our home - with us here, sometimes working as well, or just making or taking meals.
We envisioned our first remodel to involve reliable, professional contractors and Remodel Works exceeded our expectations. They now set the standard for us! Several other family members had contractors skip out on them, which ended up costing them more time, stress, and money. We wanted to avoid this, and have it done right the first time, with minimal work on our end. In fact, all we had to do was paint the bathroom one weekend, and we already had the paint.
Bottom line: peace of mind is worth hiring Remodel Works. We did because they came highly recommended by our friends who also had a bathroom remodel. Our friends were on our side, and knew our concerns about dealing with contractors, and shared the importance we placed on cost, timing, scheduling, etc. Our friends were key touchstones throughout the process, giving us third-party wisdom all along the way.
Cost is extremely high. Estimates contain no itemized pricing just a total at the bottom which is a nonsense business practice. When you don't buy into their $16,000 costs for a 8x5 bathroom remodel attitude goes right down the tubes. Waste your time by giving you a proposal completely outside of your budget and bringing you back to the showroom to do it.
Overall Suggestion:
If you want a company with high ratings who does good work and you have absolutely no issues with spending 2 - 3x as much as necessary for the job these are your guys. If you are shopping around and don't have money to waste don't bother, their pricing is extremely high. You can find other people to do the same work for much less money who will offer you affordable materials and labor.
Long Review:
I went to Remodel Works because of the reviews I saw here on Angie's List. The office is a small showroom with many nice high end displays for kitchen and bath items. They have a vast array of selections, materials, and demo items for you to touch and feel which is great.
Going in I specified our budget amount and was very upfront about the fact that their "normal, average" $15,000 cost that I was informed of was not even close to what we'd be willing to spend since our kitchen could be done by Home Depot for the same price with TONS more materials, labor, and value to us. We were whisked around the showroom to pick out materials and items to be built into our proposal. A third of these items never made it to our proposal.
The measurements at our house were done next day and the proposal was ready 3 days after that. To my suprise there was a $16,000 quote for parts and labor put right in front of me. I priced out the parts on my own when we left since they refused to provide any information, and the break down was $11,000 in labor and $5,000 in parts at consumer retail price. This is roughly $300 per square foot of bathroom in just labor, the real estate itself isn't even worth that much! To boot the proposal was not itemized and they would give me no actual cost for the items on the proposal leaving me to assume they just randomly wrote down a number at the bottom of the page to reach their "$15,000" magical cost.
We asked them to strip out everything but demo'ng the shower pan, moving the drain and installing the tub... total price for that work - $10,000 ... give me a break. Oh and still no itemized pricing just a total at the bottom of a page.
My final conclusion... If you're a normal person on a budget go somewhere else. If you've got money to burn and want to buy only the best and don't mind paying a lot for it, these are your guys. From what I can tell their work is excellent and they have some 5 year stand by it guarantee, but it's not worth the price to me.
The process was just as it was sold. I signed up for a full kitchen and two partial bathrooms in June/July, and by the end of September it was all complete. It took about 4 weeks total for the work to be done from demo to completion. My floors were covered each day, they vacuumed each day, and I trusted each one of their workers in my home the times when I could not be there.
If there was any question about the specifics of the work to be done, no one hesitated to ask me - they do want to make you happy and want to do things "right" according to you (example: Where do you want the towel bar?). Of course they are also willing to share their expertise.
The timeline is the most important part. All I hear from friends/family is that contractors are always late, or work based on their own personal schedules. But Remodel Works followed the schedule exactly, and there were no major surprises. I knew each day what was going to happen. Although the actual person who arrived to do the work changed per the schedule toward the end of the process, I understand the difficulties of scheduling so many people so far in advance. The Project Manager visited throughout the process to make sure things were being done correctly and to my satisfaction. Anything I found that was "off" during the process was fixed immediately (a small crack in a sconce for example).
This is a high class business with competitive pricing (for what you get), focused on making the customer happy by not forgetting about the details.

PLease see above comments that include the details of this job.
Very pleased with the employees, project and my beautiful new cutom shower.
Highly recommend.
Mary Jennings was the designer and she is very skilled in bathroom design. She found a way to incorporate all my preferences and the final result was stunning. Pat Luich was the project manager on both my jobs. He is always organized, gets things done when he says and communicates promptly. Brett was the primary technician on my job and, in fact, he did at least 90% of the work. Brett was a real gem, personable, fun to talk with, meticulous in his workmanship, skilled at tile, drywall, plumbing, framing, everything. If I do the rest of my bathrooms I will request Brett for sure.
Remodel Works is the perfect remodeler in my mind. Of course, you are not going to get the lowest bid for their high quality work. But once you've decided to pay a few extra dollars, you can then sit back, ENJOY the remodeling and get a HIGH QUALITY job. I went through 3 major remodel projects on other homes with lower quality remodelers. Those jobs were very stressful and I had problems crop up constantly - subs not showing up, substandard workmanship, projects going on weeks and months longer than expected, etc. With Remodel Works you work with the same staff year after year - hardly any subs - and they stick to their schedule exactly. The work is always perfect and if not they fix it right away - no questions asked. They are good people, honest, and you feel good about letting them have access to your home.
I can hardly think of anything I'd change. The one thing is that their bids don't include painting. You have to call your own painter. Also, their selection of products in the showroom is nice, but somewhat limited. I ended up buying our medicine cabinets, light fixtures and hardware myself online.
I have turned several of my neighbors on to Remodel Works and they too love their new rooms. I highly recommend them.
This is the second time I've used Remodelworks and I'm extremely pleased. The combination of quality materials, quality workmanship, and professionalism is just tough to beat in my opinion. I'd use them again.
