Had a cordial meeting with Custom Exteriors at their offices where they answered all our questions and we then decided to order new doors. Approx 2 days later one of their marketing people came to our house and we decided on the doors we wanted and agreed to a price. A few days later one of the company owners came over and made detailed measurements and we decided on additional details such as the glass design and type of hinges and door handles and locks we preferred. Approximately one month later the doors arrived and were installed by 2 of Custom Exteriors' own installers. The job went very well and the work was done very expertly and professionally. The last step was the painting of the doors and trim to our specifications. We are very pleased with our new doors and our experience with Custom Exteriors.

Hi (removed member name). Thank you for your "curious response". In checking our records, I see we visited you nearly 3 years ago to the day. Why even take the time to draft a response on Angie's List? You went with another company. Custom Interiors replaced all of the windows in my home with new vinyl clad Lo E sound reducing Analin windows in about 2008. Pricing wasnot dirt cheap, but it was good; you get what you pay for. The windows are still wonderful 4 years later - no issues. salepeople helpful , not pushy. the job was well supervised, the work was done when they said it would be, exactly how they said it wouuld be done. A couple of years ago I even called them about roofing repairs since they do new roof installs, and they came out for free, looked at my roof, and gave me a reference for a repair contractor.

1) My sales rep : Grayeagle Porter : he was friendly, knowledgeable, very straightforward. He provided us with various options and made his own recommendation for what he felt was the best choice for our home. He was absolutely right in his assessment. He showed us all the work that the company had performed in our neighborhood and we were astonished at how many homes had work done by the company. This of course made us feel considerably more comfortable than we expected. After all we were contemplating an expensive replacement. He explained exactly how the replacements would look, what steps the crew would take to make sure that the windows were installed correctly and explained the permit process necessary for the work to be completed. Once I realized how easy it was to obtain the permit, I was able to do it myself and save some money. He didn't have to do that as the company could have secured the permit but it would have been a higher cost to me. I appreciated that. Prior to the order being processed, my wife and I decided to change the trim on our order and Grayeagle made sure that the change was processed as requested. He was also easily available to us to contact if we had questions. He gave us his number and email address. We originally intended to solicit 3 companies before deciding upon a contractor but we were so impressed with his presentation and the price he quoted that my wife felt we should go with Custom-Exterior. 2) Ryan and the installing crew. : Grayeagle estimated that ours would be a two day job due to the size of the two sliders we were replacing. Ryan's crew arrived promptly and were able to complete the entire job in one day. It was a long day as they were here from 9 AM to just past 6 PM. But as physically demanding as the installation process was, our home was left clean and neat when they were done. The product was superior to the vinyl windows and sliders that were there before. They even went out of their way to caulk above our windows around a half moon shaped window to help guarantee that no water might get in above one of the sliders. That was greatly appreciated. We had a minor glitch in that our two screens for the kitchen windows did not quite fit properly but the company was already in the process of replacing those without me having to call them. I was greatly pleased with the service and product I received from the folks at Custom-Exterior. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone seeking to replace their windows.

We chose Custom Exteriors because of their high rating in Angie's List. We visited the showroom and got a good 20 to 30 minute overview of all the window brands and types, which was extremely helpful. We chose Anglin windows based on their overview of the different window brands. We arranged an appointment to get the windows measured. One of the owners does the measurements to ensure a good fit. It took about six weeks to get the windows made. They called us when the windows came into their warehouse and we scheduled installation the next day! Miguel came with a crew of 4 and they installed the windows and completely cleaned up in about 5 1/2 hours. Custom Exteriors uses only their own employees and they really did a great job for us. I would recommend them to anyone considering new windows.

It seems this is not a 'small job' company. I needed 1 window replaced, but there's a '3 piece' minimum with this company.
Description of Work: Sales rep was a no show - not a good start, but seems to be completely the norm in this industry. If you can't keep track of appointments and scheduling, how can anyone expect you to keep track of a home improvement project. First impressions count for a lot, unfortunately.

Hi [member name removed], I'm disappointed to learn about this appointment. San Francisco is a very complicated city to work with due to strict rules on window styles and materials. Add to that HOA rules relative to city requirements and that would speak to our project minimums. Addressing the key issue of no-showing, I will certainly look into this today. The salesman assigned to this is our very best, in fact, most of our best review's with Angie's List are due to him. If you would allow, I would be happy to discuss your project, in fact, even come to San Francisco myself to inspect. How can I make this right for you? Regards, Jack Cooper/Custom Exteriors, Inc/ Marketing and Business Development. Telephone 888-957-7800 extension 28 or jcooper@custom-exteriors.com
Custom Exteriors sales person (Paul) was very good. He went over every detail of the options that needed to be specified for the work. This included the window type, materials, colors, hardware, and glazing. Paul was very knowledgeable about the local building code requirements, which helped a lot to avoid any potential problems with building inspector sign offs. The scope of work, exact details and measurements, costs and payment terms were all spelled out completely and clearly before signing on the bottom line. The windows were manufactured within three weeks, and the installers showed up promptly as scheduled. The demolition involved removing about 4 inches of stucco around each window, then prying out the old aluminum window frames. The job also included two cut-down openings, and two built-in openings. All of the preparation of the openings was done carefully and accurately. The five man crew worked two long days to complete their work, covering all the furniture and carpeting beforehand for dust control, and cleaning up everything at the end. I was completely satisfied with their workmanship. These guys took a lot of pride in what they did. There was one unfortunate problem with the materials. The most expensive window - an 8 foot arched picture window - was damaged prior to installation. Can't be sure about how that happened, but I am certain it did not happen after the window arrived at my site. At any rate, the damage (a half-inch deep dent on the exterior) was not noticed before installation, and I also did not notice it on the final walk-through (it was dark out by that time.) The stucco guy showed it to me the next morning, before he began his part of the job. This took a few phone calls and emails to the company. After a field repair technician came out and looked at the damage, they decided it could not be repaired. At this point, Jeff (the Owner) got involved. He offered me my choice of a discount to accept the damaged window, or a no-cost replacement. I opted for the replacement, knowing this would add up to a six-week delay to re-manufacture the window frame. Jeff simply said "we'll fix it." I held back the 10% contingency payment to make sure I would still have their attention after a months time. The new window frame arrived in about five weeks, and a repair technician completed the replacement in about a half-day. Although my job ran into a fairly serious problem, there was no argument, no discussion, and no apology necessary. The company simply accepted their responsibility and made it right. They performed exactly as agreed, and they were paid in full on the day the work was completed. I would recommend this company, and I would hire them again in the future.
Description of Work: Custom Exteriors did a complete replacement of all the windows in my house (13 in all) and also replaced a sliding glass patio door with a french door. I chose new construction windows, rather than pop-in window replacement. The windows they sold me were Milgard's Ultra Wood Clad series, including the french door. These windows are fiberglass on the exterior and real vertical grain Douglas fir veneer on the inside. In case you've never seen these, it is a fabulous looking window - both inside and out. By my choice, their work scope did not include either interior trim or exterior stucco patching - this was done by others.

Everything was very smooth and very easy. Their staff was professional and answered all my questions. They came out to my house to intially bid and returned to write up the contract giving me a few discounts for the large amount of windows. They did all the work in two days. I had some concerns about the door which they promptly dealt with and then stained/varnished. It is a gorgeous door. Again, all workers were very delightful.
Description of Work: I had windows installed throughout my house including the garage. I had a new front door installed with a new door frame. The door was stained here after installation by one of their workers. All the work was top grade...I am exceedingly satisfied. Neat, clean, careful, cheerful...just a wonderful company to deal with.

EVERYONE with the company was awesome to deal with. The salesperson Paul was very knowledgeable. After he helped me decide on the window style I wanted to match the rest of my home, the owner came out to double check the measurements (which were correct). Windows were then ordered. About six weeks later someone contacted me to set up installation. They were available to install them the next day. The installation crew was clean and respectful of my home. They covered the carpeting inside and cleaned up all residue of their work. They hauled away the old windows too. I had gotten several other quotes and Custom Exteriors was by far the least expensive. I still got quality windows (Anlin) and great installation work. I would hire them again and highly recommend them.

The product itself was great. The initial salesman was good to work with. But we had some concerns with the customer service during installation—one of the employees was rude to us. We would have canceled the order because of that one individual, had we not been pleased with the price and already ordered the product. I emailed the owner about my concerns and didn't get any response.

Dear Members, thank you for the compliments on the product and our rep who helped you with the order. We would like to talk with you regarding your concerns about our customer service, our CFO Kevin Gundry left you a messsage this week, but we have not heard back from you. Both Kevin and I looked back at our emails and could not find anything sent to us, please resend it and we'd be happy to discuss your concerns with you. I would be very interested to know which of our employees you thought was rude to you, I sincerely apologize. We did have one employee on your job, who recently recovered from brain surgery and smiles constantly and we had feedback from one home owner who thought that was a bit odd. I care very much about your experience with my company and hope you'll get back to either Kevin Gundry or myself as soon as possible, Jeff Kendall/ President/925-249-2280

sitI called Custom Exteriors (along with 2 other window companies) for a quote. Surprisingly, all of the window quotes were close in price so, after some consideration (there was another company that I really liked as well), I decided to go with Custom Exteriors due to the positive reviews on Angie's List and Yelp (btw, I believe Custom Exteriors' rating may have declined on Yelp over the last few months since I don't remember the company being rated this low -- I haven't yet checked their current standings on Angie's Lists). I was also impressed by their salesman, Grayeagle, who seemed to be a very knowledgeable, honest, and fair and thrilled with Grayeagle's offer to have the installation crew install decorative corbel at no extra charge if I bought it and had it ready by the time they are ready to install. Grayeagle came by after the initial sales presentation to re-measure my windows for accuracy and go over options and paperwork. Like always, he was great, and I happily handed over a deposit so that they could get started with the permit process. Next, came Jeff, who came to re-measure my windows (Grayeagle had explained that, because bay windows are so expensive to build, they usually double check their work by having 2 people measure it). Jeff was pleasant but I couldn't help but feel that he was trying to look for ways to give me less bang for my buck. He suggested I shorten the window's height. I told him that I didn't want to shorten the window because I felt that a larger window would give the illusion of more space in the house. He then told me that if the window was a bit smaller, there wouldn't be a need for tempered glass. Well, why would I want to shorten my window so that I can downgrade the glass that was to be used but pay the same price? When I asked him for details about the cable system that will support my window, I was told that there wouldn't be any. That shocked me. Not only had I discussed cables with Grayeagle (when I asked him why the window had a roof, he explained it as being a good cover for the cables that will be supporting my window) I had read up on bay windows since I met with Grayeagle and, from previous discussions, understood that the window was going to be supported by cables, covered by a roof, and that any corbels that I add would be for decorative purposes only although they would provide the added benefit of giving the window additional support), Jeff told me that bolts would be the sole support system for the window and that there won't be any cables. What??? Everything I read about bay windows stated that it must be supported by cables or corbels and even said to be weary of companies that try to skip using cables to cut costs since the window will sag over time. I mean, what would support the far end of the window? When I tell him that what he said doesn't sound right, he says "not even if the screws were THAT long?" So, I chuck it up to a misunderstanding and make a mental note to check with Grayeagle. I re-researched bay windows and after feeling convinced that cables are indeed important, I emailed Grayeagle for clarification Well, there was no need for clarification. A month after getting my 2nd payment toward my deposit, Jeff called and told me that he was at the San Francisco Building Department, applying for a permit, and was just informed that the permit would cost $2500 and would not guarantee that the project could be done. He explained that after I paid $2500, I would have to meet with the Environmental Protection Agency who will have to make sure that the installation of the bay windows is carried out in a eco-friendly and safe manner. Then, because my house is over 50 years old, the Historical Preservation Society would review my plans and make sure that the windows are cohesive with the neighborhood and time period for my home. The process is subjective and the Historical Preservation Society might require changes to the window design (which will affect the cost of the window) or even deny the project altogether. In any event, the $2500 would be nonrefundable. Jeff then asked if I would like to proceed, stating that he would understand if I did not. I told him I don't want to proceed and he agreed to return my deposit. Although it would have been nice if they were familiar with San Francisco city window permit requirements before doing business with me, I did not feel that this curve ball was the company's fault. I have read multiple horror stories about the SF permit process in which people are "surprised" with additional requirements based on who they speak with. On 9/17/12, I was told that I would get my $4,628 deposit mailed back to me which I did receive in mid October after calling and reminding Jeff a couple of times. I have mixed feelings about the company & probably won't use it again.
Description of Work: I was looking to get 2 bay windows to replace regular windows in my kitchen and living room. The company quoted a price in the $10k range to get both windows but asked that I cancel the contract or cover the building permit fees when notified of unexpectedly high building permit fees. As a result, no work was done and my deposit was refunded to me.

Member- I appreciate the time you took to write the review, I think you put a great deal of thought in it. The feedback I take very seriously and my hope is it will help me improve our company. Thanks for the kind words on Gray Eagle, our estimator. He's been with us a long time and is extremely knowledgeable, we are very fortunate to have him representing us. I apologize for the confusion regarding the cables. Most of the Bays we install come with cable systems. After reading your review, I called Milgard to refresh my memory, and they confirmed that while cable systems come with their vinyl Bay Windows, they are not available on their Fiberglass Ultra Bays which is what we were going to order if we had been able to get the permit. The permit process was very time consuming and frustrating. I obtain permits every day all over the Bay Area and San Francisco is by far the most challenging. Getting an approval for anything involving a change on the front of houses 50 + years and older can be very difficult. Gray Eagle and I both thought that with some good pictures of Bays on your street, we had a good chance of getting the permit. In fact your neighbor almost directly across the street from you, installed a similar Bay. Those pictures, which I submitted with the permit application, didn't help our cause, and the plan checker commented that the houses that we showed with the Bays probably hadn't obtained permits to do the work. I gave it my best shot. When our application was denied, I totally understood your wanting to cancel the order, I would have done the same thing. Their appeal procedure seemed to me costly and absurd. I'm disappointed we weren't able to get the permit and do the work as planned, and I'm sorry for the frustration you felt with us as we navigated through the process. We wish you well. Sincerely, Jeff Kendall/President

I hired this company to replace balcony doors and windows in my condo. They promptly came in and gave me a quote for installation and windows (new type construction). This was on August 11. They asked 50% paid up front. Estimated time to begin installation - 2 month. 2 month had passed and then extra 3 weeks have passed. It is now October 21st. No signs of any traction on the project, no calls or emails - total silence. I pick up the phone and call to inquire. I am told that my windows came to their distribution center on October 9th and are undergoing verification - to ensure everything is made to the specification. Someone will call me soon to arrange installation. Indeed got a call and installation was arranged for October 29th 9am. It is now October 29th, 9 am. 10 am... Nobody arrived. I finally got a call that the installer could not find my bedroom window and that he was delayed. Eventually he did find it - but it was white in color instead of tan color that I ordered. So they will come to install only balcony door and window and will have to come back to install bedroom window later. On the windows and doors they did have on hand to install, screen doors were broken and could not latch closed. On the doors, handles were scratched. To summarize : they spent 20 days (from Oct 9th to Oct 29th) inspecting my order and nobody noticed half of the order was the wrong color. It's a lie, quite obviously. What they had to install was broken and scratched. Also, now I have to take a 2nd day off work so that they can fix their mistake when they come to install bedroom window of the right color. I complained to the company. The correct window was ready for install a week later. The installer arrived late again. Thankfully, the bedroom window was in good shape. The same day bedroom window was installed, I was charged the remainder of the total price, even though contract clearly states that there are 3 installments : up front, on completion of installation and on completion of the job. I have not authorized the second payment, it was charged without my knowledge. I also never received either a notification of charge from the company or the copy of the charge receipt. The installation was completed, but defective screen doors and handles were promised to be replaced asap. Two month has passed and no signs of interest of completing the job form this company. We are now in December.. I called to inquire. I am again assured everything will be done. A week later a guy shows up to replace the scratched handles on the doors. I take time off work to be at home to meet him. The installer brought the wrong handles, form a different window brand. My time is wasted again! He is of course promising that he'll get the right ones and will fix it asap. Another month has passed. We are now in January 23rd. Job is still not completed. I called the accounting in Custom Exteriors and asked for a refund of final installment (10%), which according to contract should not have been charged anyway, since the job has not been completed yet. I am assured money would be refunded that day. I checked my c/c today, February 18th. Money has not been refunded still. I had a really bad experience with this company - they lie in your face, waste your time and charge money without your authorization. Take your business somewhere else!

While proud of our efforts over the years that have produced over 14,000 very satisfied customers including countless Angie's List subscribers, it was extremely disappointing to me to hear about your experience with my company. I sincerely apologize for the frustration we caused you and for the level of service that was lacking on your job. After talking with you last week, I was happy to hear that the window and door work is complete. Our painter has contacted you to schedule the minor touch-up you requested on the exterior trim. My office has forwarded you the items you asked for, and if there is anything else you need, I will personally see to it that it is handled. I appreciate your time and feedback, and am determined to make improvements in the service we provide that will insure better experiences for all of our customers in the future. Sincerely, Jeff Kendall /President

We love making our customers happy. Still after starting Custom Exteriors 17 years ago my favorite part of this job is seeing how new windows and doors can transform a home. Your review really helps my company and many people who read the reviews judge us on your comments. We try to make everyone happy and sometimes we might fall short. But we always strive hard to please everyone. So thank you! Please tell your friends and neighbors about my company. Kevin Gundry Owner/ CFO

Great, the windows are outstanding, the work was fast, done in 1 day, the windows are GREAT. The only problem was that the lock for the exterior door did not arrive in time and they left us without a lock for an exterior door, to the street, in San Francisco.
Description of Work: We had about 20 windows replaced and one exterior door replaced and upgraded.

Paul in sales came to the house with samples and did a good job of discussing options and alternatives and what costs would be for various windows. Everyone from the company was easy to work with and they kept me updated on what was going on. The windows were installed in one day and then the stucco was redone in the next few days. They did a good job of matching the old stucco and both the installers and the stucco people kept things cleaned up. I am pleased with both the performance and look of the windows and would use them again for future window replacement.
Description of Work: I replaced two single hung windows, patio door and and slider window. They were original installation rather than replacement so the stucco was cut and then they redid the stucco. They also had to get a building permit and took care of the inspections.

They had great attention to detail and provided an end product that we absolutely love! They were extremely friendly, always on time, and very professional. They even trimmed the trees away from the house and cut the branches in smaller pieces and placed the waste in our green bins! They went above and beyond what we expected and would recommend this company to friends.
Description of Work: Wayde with Custom Exteriors did a wonderful job on our Santa Clara home! He pressure washed, patched, sanded and painted our exterior.

Customs exterior was very competitive in the price quote. We ended up going with another company because of timing and punctuality. Greyeagle was very knowledgeable. I liked that he kept up his skills and certification, even though he is more involved in sales than installation. I will still consider using Custom exterior in the future. Thanks for taking the time to come out for a quote.
Description of Work: No service performed. Got a quote for window replacement.

I really liked them and they did a very good job of explaining their warranties. They did a good job at explaining what services they do and when and they also were good in helping pick the right windows. They were able to answer a lot of technical questions. I was very pleased with them.
Description of Work: They put on a new roof and replaced the windows.
