It was awful - so bad, in fact, that honestly - it made me question the integrity of the Angie's List network. In sum, while I will concede to him (Don) that the ceilings looked good - there were also some issues: 2 light fixtures were broken. Don's excuse for the one I pointed out was that "it was old" - and there was no intent/agreement to fix it. I discovered that the other was broken after he'd left. My attic cover was warped. I discovered this, as well, after he'd left. The touch-up color used in one of the bedrooms was the wrong color. I did point this out to Don, and in essence I was told that it was "not his fault" - that he'd used the paint that he'd found in the garage and tried to match it as best as he could. He proceeded to tell me how much it costs to get the paint to do the touch-ups... After he'd left, I found places where the color paint had been stripped from the walls, where the plastic had been pulled off - and it hadn't been touched up at all. There was acoustic debris left on my outside, front plants, patio area, bark, stepping stones, lawn, sidewalk and in the street infront of the house - and while I understand that this is a "messy" job, professionalism and taking care in one's work would have dictated that he - or one of his workers - at very least - hose it down, as opposed to leaving it there for me to deal with. I didn't realize, until afterwards, that my central heating would be cranked up to the max, overnight (approx 18 hours), in order to assist in the drying of the new acoustic. This would have been good to know, in advance, as it surely is a "price consideration" - not to mention a safety, etc., hazard, insofar as I'm concerned. And, lastly, in the 11th the hour, when it was time for me to write the check - the price was higher than we had discussed. There was now an "additional charge" for the "touch ups" that he HAD done to replace the colored paint... He literally threw the equivalent of a 2 year old temper-tantrum when I initially refused to pay, and stated that he had not explained that to me, and that we hadn't agreed to that, at all... I told him that I would have asked why it wasn't included in the price of doing the job, as to me - it seems like if you ripped the paint off of the wall - you should fix it.... But - there were lessons here on my part - and for this nightmarish experience, I take full responsibility: When I met him, he was having a "bad day" and spent a great deal of time talking about his son.... I liked him, listened, and I wanted to give him a "chance" - and the job, as he needed the work. Mistake #1. Because of the "informal" and unprofessional interaction - that I allowed - I accepted an estimate on the back of a business card, as opposed to an actual estimate sheet (like I'd received from from the other two vendors) - because he said it was the end of the day, and he didn't have any others with him. Mistake #2. I did not take my time to walk through, room by room, to check/inspect the quality of Don's work because I was delayed in getting home - and he was frustrated by that, and had to leave. Mistake #3. As a single woman, I know that I have to be more dilligent and take the time to research nearly ANY project I chose to hire/pay for. It's sad, but it is required, and in this case, I didn't do it. Mistake #4. Don was the cheapest estimate that I had received. At the time, it seemed great. In hindsight, it was my mistake #5. And lastly, I caved, when he had his fit - and yet, I should have stood resolute - but it was clear that he wasn't going to give in. I summised that he had under-bid the job, which wasn't my problem, but I allowed it to be. So, we split the difference, and called it a day. Mistake #6 - especially having found all of the other problems, as outlined above, when all was said and done. Did I call him to come back and fix them? After our last interaction, I refused to do so. Should I have done so? Yes. Don is a nice enough guy. His work, minus all of the other issues, would be good, and - I would have given him a very different rating. But, given MY experience, there's no way that I would ever refer him to a friend, or endorse his work. I'm sure he ended up on Angie's list for a reason - but I wouldn't put him there.
