Andy's company has been doing jobs at the house for about a year now on and off. The projects ranged from major (the deck mentioned above) and minor like replacing the garbage disposal. When he first came to the house to see the job he had a detailed discussion on exactly what needed to be done. He then went back to his office and came up with a more detailed description on what he would do and the cost of each project. Andy will not hesitate to call back to clarify any details he's unsure of. All the project's, except the deck, were completed on time and the only reason the deck was a little behind schedule was because he had another major project that he was working on. The delay was only a couple of weeks. Not a big deal for a project of this size. Andy is dependable, can be reached easily by phone or email and he will gladly explain anything the homeowner does not understand. He's a patient guy and reliable. Did I mention he's very knowledgeable and if he's unsure, he will research it and discuss it with the homeowner. We would and are doing business with him again. No hesitation.
Description of Work: Built a deck, put up lights on the exterior and interior of the house, changed about a dozen electrical outlets, installed a garbage disposal, range, and dishwasher. Painted and did drywall repair. He also did plumbing in the interior and exterior of the house.

Andy Hahn ,the owner of Hahn Construction, has the highest integrity and authenticity of any residential general contractor. Andy is thoughtful, fair and well organized. Andy developed the estimate, clarified what was in scope and out of scope (we bought the flooring and light fixtures). He recommended and managed the custom cabinet maker. The project went very smooth and Andy's crew was respectful and cleaned up every day before they wrapped up. We are very pleased with the project and highly recommend Hahn Construction.
Description of Work: Hahn Construction performed a make-over renovation of our old utility basement into an amazing study and office including built in maple cabinets and bookcases, new bamboo flooring and a custom wine closet under our stairs. The project was complicated due to the uneven flooring, existing plumbing and a sump pump that had to be hidden but accessible. The room is fantastic.

The service was very good. They were good on the pricing. Andy is very responsive. He had great workers and got the work done quickly. Andy looks over everything that gets done. They cleaned up well and knew exactly what they were doing. I have asked them for more quotes and will use them again in the future.
Description of Work: They did some general contract work for me. They did some small re-tiling. They took out an old kitchen island. They then re-tiled around that. They also put in sound-proof insulation and drywall in. I used the multiple times.

Andy Hahn surpasses anything you could dare to hope for in a contractor. He is scrupulously honest. He is a good communicator. He has a designer's eye. His co-workers are skillful, discreet and meticulous. If there is any detail which looks unfinished or odd, all you have to do is wait. They see more flaws than you do, and fix them. Hector, Andy and Jose in our half-finished kitchen To cite one example, every time they did anything that created dust, and that was a lot of days, they sealed off the kitchen from the rest of the house, draped everything in the kitchen with carefully-taped plastic, and covered the floor with a tarp. When they left at the end of the day, there was literally no dust. To cite another example, when decisions came up Andy always checked with us. As often as not we simply took his suggestion, because he has excellent taste and a clear idea of what can be done. He clearly enjoys the challenges of construction, and is always thinking about better ways of doing things. I think that's what brings him to work every day. It's not the money, because he has stubbornly resisted getting bigger and turning into a full-time manager. Over the past five years he has built a bathroom for us, demolished our garage and built a new one, and done smaller jobs as well. We have recommended him to innumerable friends, and they have hired him to do multiple jobs. I would be happy to answer questions. My e-mail address is wmsmock@gmail.com.
Description of Work: Kitchen remodel. Removed fake bricks on kitchen walls, replaced with period-look wood paneling based on our dining room (vintage 1910). Removed part of an old cabinet and installed a dishwasher. Installed wall outlets along kitchen counter and under sink. Installed new ceiling lights. Installed new sink and prepped for countertop installation. Installed two new Ikea cabinets (he encouraged us to limit costs by keeping most of our old cabinets). Redirected gas supply for stove so it could be moved.

Andy Hahn was always very communicative during the entire project--explaining everything to my satisfaction each step of the way. He always found a viable solution to any challenge that arose and always asked my opinion for his next task. He was consistently amenable to come to my home on a date/time that worked for both of us. He worked efficiently; work areas were always neat and clean when he left my premises. He never wanted to leave me in a lurch of not being able to use my kitchen facilities (water/sink, etc); some days he worked very late to accomplish the task at hand, which was surely 'going the extra mile' for me, his client. I felt the price was fair and honest and I feel I received the best service for what I paid. I am very pleased and I will surely use Andy Hahn (HAHN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, SAN RAFAEL, CA) again. In fact, I have another project coming up soon.

The entire job took from September 2010 to April 2011. Quite a long time. But, this complex many component job was being supervised remotely, communication was via email and photos, and the large number of interactions to obtain permits and inspections were not really under Andy's complete control. So, I don't really fault him for that. Andy thoroughly reported progress via email and sent extensive photos of the work being done. The finished product was very fine. He was courteous in all interactions, even when clearly there were frustrations with inspection schedules and the like. There's no doubt I'd pick him again to do a complex job and trust him to do the job professionally and take additional requests in stride. A few details: The selection of the items was left up to Andy. On the one occasion that we didn't agree, even after purchase, Andy was willing to return the item and purchase another one more to my liking. Nice. One another occasion when some of the exterior painting on the windows was a little sloppy, as noted from a photo, he went back to touch it up at no additional cost. The new electrical panel and ground rod came up a bit as an afterthought, and was really the last item to complete. Andy found several subcontractors (finally one with a decent price) and scheduled the PGand E personnel and subcontractor to perform the work.
Description of Work: Andy Hahn oversaw the repair and remodelling of a rental property. He did such a superlative job, that I felt I owed it to him to write this review. The quality that stands out in Andy, is the way he works to accommodate the client's need, be it extra legwork to obtain the correct permits and inspections, going the extra mile to find an appropriate electrician. This job was clearly not the type he is accustomed to (that probably being more upscale detailed work), but he bid and based upon the fine personal interactions, he was selected and accepted. The job included 1) bringing a water heater to code, 2) restoring 17 windows, 3) installing new lighting fixtures in kitchen, laundry room, porch, 4) repair bathroom ceiling, 5) repair sink, replace toilet, 6) remove tub, install new single piece bathtub and walls, reinforce floor, 7) install new screens for crawl space vents, 8) install smoke alarms, 9) remove existing 2-sided heater and replace with one-sided heater, patch walls as necessary, 10) repair kitchen cabinets, 11) repair bathroom door, 12) replace bathroom cabinet, 13) install new stainless sink and laminate countertops in kitchen, 14) repair laundry room flooring, walls and ceiling, 15) clean and haul, 16) obtain building permit, 17) install new electrical panel to code with ground rod, 18) install new tile in bathroom.

. They did an excellent job. They were very meticulous. They were very professional. They also put in the glass tiles which were very difficult to work with. They worked around my schedule and showed up when they were supposed to. What was really good about them is that when I was at the store actually buying the faucet to make sure that I was buying the right thing I could call him. Some of things I purchased myself like the actual material. His labour was $4000 and appliances were $6000. He is reasonable. He also would give us information on what would be good not that he has given me anything false. I want him eventually replace our flooring. Basically he could do the same thing and offer a better price. As for quality of his work he has told us that we can always call him back. When he was doing the glass tiles which were very difficult to work with and some of them were not exactly right so they went back on their own and replaced the tiles. They want their work to look good. I would them again in the future
Description of Work: .I had HAHN CONSTRUCTION to put backsplash in my kitchen, put in glass tiles, replaced some baseboard, replaced the microwave and oven, put in some cone lights, also re-plastered the kitchen ceiling, and replaced the kitchen faucet.

Andy Hahn, the owner returned my call promptly and was very friendly. He stopped by at the end of the day to take a look at the work that needed to be done. He was on time and was even more friendly in person. He emailed me an estimate within a couple of days and broke down the estimate into different tiers of possibilities to help us not only understand our options but helped us break down the cost of the job. If we only wanted to do a certain part of the estimate, that was fine with him. When work started his guys were amazing. True professionals. They didn't speak much english, but Andy is fluent is Spanish so it wasn't a problem. And I could wave my arms enough for them to understand me. Anyway, the workers were on time (even during the World Cup Mexico vs. US game) and did a great job and were respectful to my family. The outcome was fantastic. Better than expected. I would hire them again without hesitation.

They are great. They are also doing flooring, drywall, and electrical work. They have already given me a quote. They are installing the cabinets currently. They started the work, two weeks ago. Their estimate is for $4000 for installation of cabinets, flooring, countertops, drywall work, patching. They are very professional, very conscientious and have high level of integrity. They are pretty responsive. I will be using them again in the future.

We knew when we met Andy that we had a rare find - an honest and skilled craftsmen - in the Bay Area. Go figure!. As you can see, we tried to hire Andy as many times as we could to upgrade our 70+ year-old Oakland, CA home. Unfortunately for us, Andy changed his service area and we lost out on the opportunity for us to hire him for other work we wanted done on the house. Nice guy, flexible, communicates often and in detail, patiently answers all of your questions and he completes the work on time!! Best of all, his pricing is unbeatable. Yes. It's a dream to work with Andy and we lament the fact that we now have to look for a new contractor. Still, we wish him well and we're thankful for the great work he did for us during the 2 years we were lucky enough to work with him.
Description of Work: - Upgraded the house to code for earthquakes - Replaced a rotting section of the roof - Installed a new door in the basement - Remodeled dining room and living room including upgrading electrical issues to code - installed new windows

They did an excellent job. The final cost was the same as the estimate, and they kept to the schedule except for a few days (due to weather). The quality of the work was very good. Andy, the owner of the company, takes a lot of time to explain before the job exactly what they will do, gives updates during the job, and then at the end explains in detail just what they had to do in each place to repair the dry rot. He really cares that the job is done right, and that I was satisfied with everything. I highly recommend them. This is the second time I used them.

Excellent performance! The owner, Andy Hahn, came for an estimate, and clearly explained what had to be done and what the options were. The next day he and his workers returned and did the work in an excellent manner. The quality of their work is excellent. His price was very reasonable. They completely cleaned up afterwards. I would definitely use this company again for any construction work, large or small.

Andy was courteous, punctual, available, and diligent. He gave us bids on a variety of projects, but largely because he's very busy right now, we only hired him to do the floor. Given the decent quality of workmanship and very reasonable cost, I wish now that we could have given him more work. Andy kept his work area clean, was respectful of us and of the other contractors we had on site. His employee, Genaro, did a great job and not much of a talker, basically kept out of the way. When the lumber yard turned out not to have enough materials on hand to cover the project, Andy was very patient in helping to order a "refill" and waiting for delivery so he could complete the project. Nothing ever goes 100% perfectly, and my only wish on this project is that Andy had called before proceeding cutting some flooring to go around a bit of trim, rather than calling to ask if he could remove the trim first (with a happily-agreed-to change order). While nearly negligible, the troubleshooting this will cause us in the end brings his Quality grade down to a B (really an A-, but that's not an option). Overall, the floor looks great! In addition to very good workmanship and general follow-through, I also appreciated Andy's clear, concise paperwork and readiness to conduct business in a professional, thorough manner.
Description of Work: Andy installed an engineered wood floor (approx. 600 sq. ft., I think), complete with site cleanup, underlayment installation, and primed trim. We paid for the wood and trim directly, while he covered other materials in his bid.

Andy and his co-worker Genaro worked with me on the plans and permit applications, built the garage in collaboration with foundation contractor Jim Duval and structural engineer Suresh Acharya. The degree of craftsmanship is extraordinary -- far beyond standard frame construction both in structural tightness and finish. Andy does what he says on time and within the original budget. He is an exceptionally pleasant guy to work with, very attentive to the owner's needs and wants. We undertook this garage project because he had done a bathroom for us earlier at minimum cost and pain, maximum quality. I was unable to find Readymade swinging garage doors. Andy managed to make a pretty good facsimile of a pair of 1920's doors, incorporating old window frames from Urban Ore in Berkeley. They are both handsome and very solid.

Andy Hahn just finished a master s degree in sculpture at Mills College. He built our bathroom during his Christmas vacation. Now (May, 2007) he is a full time contractor. He is scrupulous, efficient and honest. He made a bid and stuck to it. As his clientele grows his rates will probably rise; contractors, especially for small jobs, are hard to find. But his integrity will make him a good investment at any price. He did exactly what he promised, when he promised, even if it meant long days and hiring extra hands. The quality of the work far surpasses what the code requires. Although he has been doing construction for years, he is relatively new as a contractor. I found this to be a strength. He is not set in his ways. He is not cynical. He is curious and inventive, a gifted carpenter who enjoys figuring out new ways to do things. Our bathroom was such a success that we started a new construction project (replace a rotting garage) with him almost immediately.
Description of Work: In a 1911 frame house, subdivide a back porch/laundry room into two rooms and install a new bathroom. Replace downstairs exterior walls without disturbing the upstairs. Build a new level floor in the bathroom. Install new windows and finish new exterior and interior walls. Install shower stall and sink. Coordinate work with plumbers and electrician. Homeowner saved some money by handling plans and permits and painting.
