THESE GUYS ARE GREAT! Mark was awesome from start to finish and Dave the owner worked with me on the price. These guys did incredible work, came up with great ideas and suggestions, and helped make the whole permit process streamlined. Sammy is a total god of brick and concrete with his attention to detail and GREAT ATTITUDE. These guys have actually become friends and check back in often with us to see how we like all the work. These guys are not the cheapest but you DO NOT WANT CHEAP NECESSARILY! Mark did stuff that I am SO GLAD got done that my four other estimators did not even think about. These guys are top notch and this is an investment. I would be HAPPY to give further info or recs for these guys...

I competitively bid it; I didn't take the lowest bid, I took the company that I felt knew the most what they were doing and there references spoke very highly of them. It was a very big job; I think it was about $35000 job. They gave us a schedule and finished it within the time frame. They found one issues when they tore off the chimney that required a change order for a couple of thousand dollars. They were neat, they were clean and the supervisors were on the job. The company was very responsive when I had any questions and I would rate them all A's. I would use them again and I can't say enough good things about them.
Description of Work: The home that we bought is ninety years old and we are restoring it. The earthquake in 1994 damaged the chimney and it was red tag but because there was so much damage after the earthquake a lot of people's jobs got passed, even though they shouldn't have. When we had inspection done on the home when we were buying it, we were told that the chimney will have to be completely rebuilt which is what Boston Brick & Stone did.

Overall the job went very well. It was easy to schedule an appointment for an estimate and the appointment time was met. I was always informed as to when the crew would be at my house and they were always on time. They did a good job at the demolition of the existing apron and the hauling away of the debris. After the forms were constructed it took a little longer than they first thought to pour the cement but that was due to the delay in the city inspector coming out for the form inspection. Everyone I spoke to in the office, regarding when things would be happening and when payments should be made, was always friendly and professional. The two members of the crew I spoke to the most, Alex and Sammy, were very friendly and helpful too.
Description of Work: The removal and replacement of a driveway apron. The obtaining of a dig permit and a required permit from the city. Boston Brick and Stone scheduled with Public Works for a pre-inspection and met wilth the inspector to obtain construction specifications. Installed forms per those specifications and requested a form inspection by Public Works before the concrete was poured.

The only good thing about having to replace my new home's chimney and firebox was finding a competent and professional company to do the work for me. I have used dozens of contractors and repair-people in my years as a home owner and I have never encountered a more profeesional company. You definitely get what you pay for and I am glad I went with Boston Brick & Stone. From obtaining the necessary permits, to daily phone calls updating me on the status, I was consistently impressed with this company and its employees. I had a slight problem at the end, but they responded to my concerns immediately and graciously. It was a somewhat tricky job and my used brick chimeny and wood burning fireplace looks gorgeous! Not the cheapest, but they worked with me on price and I would definitely recommend BBS. The quality of workmanship is unmatched.

everyone i dealt with was straightforward and pleasant to deal with. i had confidence in the ability and honesty of all involved from the office to those who worked in my house and i'm happy with the results. they were careful about furniture, floors, drapes etc. while working in the house. in addition they silicone sealed the cracks between the chimney and the house that don't affect the function of the chimney but would let moisture in to the structure and gave me a product to clean the soot off tiles and the fireplace surround.

They were really good. The person who came over actually took the pictures of the inside and the outside. He broke down the price for me, told me what part I could get done now and what part I could put off because it was going to be pretty expensive. We ended up getting them to fix a broken brick on the fireplace and the cost for that was 625 dollars. I plan to use them for the remainder of the work.

The verbal quote I got on the spot was more than twice the price of all the other bids I received. I asked the rep. to prepare a written estimate and to e-mail it to me. I never heard from him again. What can I say. If this initial experience is representative of the type of service I could expect to see were I to hire them, then obviously I was lucky that they went away. They were expensive AND flaky. I would not recommend them. There are too many other reliable, reasonably priced competitors out there.

First of three companies to come look at the job. The sales person Mark was nice and not aggressive. Surprised me when he came back an hr later with the owner who lived in the neighborhood to look at some potential problems that Mark had thought of. Seemed very knowledgeable and detail oriented. Next company seemed fine but didn't mention the problems. However, the second company quoted a considerably lower estimate than Boston Brick. When we told Boston Brick of the lower estimate, they matched it with no haggling. The job went more smoothly than any we have ever had done and with our old house there are many projects to compare to. They were on time, thought of some improvements along the way which they did at no additional charge, and the driveway looks beautiful. We had a few minor concerns which were immediately addressed. I really cannot imagine how it could have gone better or gotten a better result.

I called the company at 8:00 in the morning, they were here at 10:00 the same day. I have never seen such service. The report received was more comprehensive then I expected. There was more damage to the chimney then I anticipated. The cost to repair was high. I am currently negotiating with the buyer and will get final quotes from other companies.
Description of Work: While selling my house I learned from the Home Inspection Report that my chimney was cracked. I called this contractor for an estimate. They completed an extremely comprehensive report (30+) pages, including pictures inside and out. The inspection took more than one hour - they went under the house, in the house and on the roof. I received the report in 2 days.

My home is 78 years old. Its chimney was unreinforced brick, finished with stucco, and the fireplace had no damper, typical of the time. In 1933, it experienced the Long Beach earthquake--and survived many more over the decades. However, when I purchased my home in 1990, I was advised the chimney and firebox were unsafe and should not be used. Obvious by speed with which I set about this task, their replacement/repair was a low priority. ?This year, I resolved to have the work done and called three chimney contractors for estimates, Boston Brick and Stone ("BBS") among them. I selected BBS because of the evaluations listed on Angie's List and because of its reputation among residents in my area. ?Initially, I spoke with Anna who quickly arranged an inspection appointment for me. Mark Cazares was the BBS representative who performed the inspection, wrote the report of his findings, and submitted to me BBS's proposal to do the work. Mark was punctual, courteous, and friendly and appeared to do a very thorough inspection. He was responsive to my concerns and answered my questions satisfactorily. ?The proposal raised a number of questions, and Mark answered each one. His manager, Jo, followed up and provided helpful information about the bond beam. ?Scheduling was easy, and the work began promptly. The job supervisor was Alex; he, too, was courteous, punctual, and professional. Because of the way my home is situated, the workers had to use a small area of my neighbors' yard; they exercised appropriate care, and at the conclusion of each workday left the site in good repair. A two-man crew, here to work on the fireplace, were careful, covered the floor and rug, as needed, and, when their work was completed, left the living room in good condition. ?At the BBS office, Holly either called or e-mailed me daily to tell me what the next day's schedule would be. Karen e-mailed invoices when they were due. ?The work was completed more quickly than estimated; the inspections were completed as scheduled; and the property was left in good condition. ?And, finally, after 18 years, I have a safe and usable fireplace.
Description of Work: The work included the demolition of the existing chimney throat and the hauling away of the debris; minor repairs to the firebox and the firebox facing; installation of a damper; the rebuilding of the back wall of the fireplace; relocation of the gas shut-off valve and installation of a new log lighter; parging the smoke chamber; installation of a bond beam; the construction of a steel stud frame to code height with a 12-inch high-temperature pipe; installation of exterior lath; the application of scratch coat and color coat; the installation of termination flashing, storm collar, and City of Los Angeles-approved cap; the repair, as needed, of the roofing around the chimney; the clean up and hauling away of all debris; and the obtaining of the requisite permit and scheduling of City inspections.

After an initial flub when I first called in to obtain a price quote (which they immediately rectified), their service was wonderful. Service personnel were always 10 minutes early for the scheduled appointments and were highly knowledgeable and professional. When their workers did not do quite as nice a job of finishing around areas they sealed with caulking, a supervisor who was checking in on their work took 1/2 hour to refinish the caulking to my complete satisfaction. This is a case of a company really going the extra mile to make sure the customer is happy. And, as you can see from my positive review, their extra service paid off!
Description of Work: The company repositioned the gas burner inside our existing fireplace and sealed around the firebox. Future work will include replacing the metal cap on the top of the flue.

After Northridge, the previous doofus-owner of this house hired a grifter to rebuild the toppled chimney. This hustler not only used non-matching brick, he used too-strong cement, and neglected any reinforcement at the roofline. So next big quake, instead of a cascade of bricks, he ensured one CRUSHING block. Will it destroy my driveway? Or land in my living room? Either way, I was blissfully unaware of this tiny defect till it was revealed during a routine inspection by Boston Brick. Not wishing to lose car, living room and/or family, I explored options with them. The priciest? A complete rebuild. The most affordable? Chimney stabilization. Guess which I chose? Everyone from Boston Brick was professional, knowledgeable and helpful. When we hit a communications snag--which can happen--they were quick to resolve it (I believe I then got EXTRA attention). Today, the reinforced chimney appears solid, with the stabilization bar beautifully color-camouflaged into the composition roofing behind it. Now, let's see how it holds up to a 7.4. Stay tuned.

The range of price was so large that I didn't get it done b/c there wasn't a guarantee on the price. If they went in to determine it was stable it would have cost 5,000 (includes clean up and repair, etc.), but if they determined it was unstable it would have cost over 16,000 and I would have been stuck. They even provided a written estimate which was nice. The experience was great, though. The gentleman was helpful and responsive.

They are very professional very good in their works but very high on the price. I picked them because they started off 5,000 for my work the next year I contacted Angie's list they gave me a bid for 3500 for the same job so I went with the cheaper. The workers were prompt, professional, and cleaned up everything. They recommended a company for the gas logs. It was a job well done. Other workers who have since gone under the house have said that the work was solid and professional.
Description of Work: They inspected my fireplace and chimney and did repairs. My brick hearth was sinking below the level of the surrounding flooring. I also wanted to convert from wood to gas. The inspection cost $125. It was detailed and included an estimate, broken down by categories for the work I was considering. They told me that if I wanted gas fires, I would not need to repair the fire box, but if I wanted to continue with wood fires repairs would be needed. They went under the house and bolstered the sinking hearth. They installed a rain cap on the chimney.

The representative told me about all the magazines they're featured in and awards and how widely acclaimed they are, and I have no doubt after seeing the detailed quote that they clearly know what they're doing. Their workers are permanently employed, highly skilled, trained individuals. No details are overlooked with them. And I've seen photos of their work, and it's beautiful. BUT I cannot afford to pay *MOVIE STAR PRICES* for my tiny yard. $40,000 (and I have 90% of the material) for my 15 x 15 patio is astronomical. I got the SAME work done for LESS THAN a third their price, and it is stunning, meticulous, and professional (done by a masonry person with 20 years experience and permanent employees). But if you're rich and can afford them, I have no doubt you'd be pleased with their beautiful work. I'm writing this report to let others know you can get quality work done more cost efficiently.
Description of Work: BASIC Description: Flagstone patio, approx. 15' x 15'. We had all the flagstone already. Small 1 foot cinder block planter, 20 feet, already in place, needed facing w/flagstone. Small 7 foot long step/berm at the entrance of patio (1 foot high, using cinder blocks, facing w/flagstone). Flagstone area needed to be prepped/leveled.

Response from Boston Brick & Stone, Inc
Boston Brick and Stone take every report to heart, particularly in a case like this. We are always comparing our prices with those of our competitors. No we are not the least expensive nor are we the most expensive, but we are competitive. One only has to read the reviews from a few of our customers who did use much “cheaper” companies and eventually hired us to come in and fix the mess. Yes our masons are true artisans and our customer service is legendary (just look at the 60 terrific reviews on Angie’s list). Good value is important. One has to be able to look at all the facts of a construction project to appreciate true value. It is not just in the price

Job description: Install flagstone on back porch -- 330 square feet.
Description of Work: We did not hire the company. The sales rep came out to look over the project and said he would get back to us in a few days with an estimate. After over a week had passed with no word from them, we called the office several times. Our phone calls were not returned. Finally, out of frustration, we told the receptionist that if the company did not want the job at least let us know so we would not continue to wait for an estimate. The rep then returned our call and said he had the wrong email address though he had not called before with this excuse. When we received the estimate we noticed it was more than twice as high as other companies. They also asked for 50% of the price up front -- 10% down and 40% on start date. We were disappointed and disgusted.
