All went well, they set up the apptment in a timely manner were there on time, did their inspection and were done in about an hour and a half for 2 chimney's .
Description of Work: They did a very thorough inspection was a bit pricey to replace a prefab fireplace that only has a life of 15 yrs but that is what the house had that they were inspecting for us. It cost us about $250 per chimney for the inspection and they were very timely with the written report. They took photos of the areas in question and described the cost to repair as well. We didn't buy the house because ther were bigger issues but had we bought it this report would have helped us negotiate the price.

Boston Brick & Stone was used in November. Our experience went very well. They were very professional, very on time. Their quote was pretty accurate.
Description of Work: Boston Brick & Stone did the chimney inspection. And we also have them service all the correction that needed to be worked on in the chimney.

Boston Brick was fine with the chimney sweep but their estimate was way too high to do repair work.
Description of Work: We had our chimney cleaned. Boston Brick seemed to do a good job- they used a camera and were prompt and cleaned up well. We got an estimate to reparge our smoke chamber and it was thousands (yes thousands) of dollars higher than other estimates. We went with a different company

When we first showed interest in getting an estimate, we had to delay our plans of moving forward on fixing the chimney. However, they kept touching base very regularly to see if we were ready to start the project. When we decided to move on this project, the work was scheduled two months out. When they arrived to start the work, they covered up everything they could with plastic. I recommend removing drapes and rolling up any rugs because, despite the plastic wrapping, A LOT of find dust still landed everywhere! When the job was done, they cleaned up as best they could, but the vaccuum they used was a shop vac and we still had to go over it several times with our regular vaccuum and then mop. Despite all of this incovenience, it was worth it just to have our fireplace fixed and looking new. I recommend this company.
Description of Work: Work was performed from March 4 through March 7. The supervisor/proprietor came by towards the end of most days, but certainly after the end of each phase to inspect the work. The work involved placing a sleeve in the chimney for safety and refurbishing the inside of the fireplace with new brick and proper ventilation; they replaced the flue and, overall, brought the fireplace up to code and now it is operational.

I needed an estimate for my fireplace repair back in 2010. After calling Boston Brick and Stone I thought I could never afford it. Back then they quoted me $6,000 to get my fireplace up to code and repair it. Three years later they quoted me $8,000 for the same job. It's always the same story with them. Way to overpriced. I ended going with a different company who told me that most of what BBaS suggests is completely unnecessary work. My fireplace is in good shape and just needs a quick fix. I have it done this Wednesday for a little over $1,000 by an honest two man operation. Verdict: KEEP LOOKING SOMEWHERE ELSE. You'll find someone.

The chimney repair estimator looked at the outside of the chimney, flashed a light on the interior and after a 10-15 minute external examination said the entire chimney would have to be removed and rebuilt from the ground up, and maybe the foundation up, tbd. When I asked the estimator about simply repairing, he said absolutely not as they could not guarantee a brick structure. (Ironic as their name is "Brick & Mortar!"). The contract they delivered had a cost of $23K approximately, and clearly stated that the full scope of charges could not be estimated until the old chimney was removed. It also said the cost might be substantially increased depending on city permitting costs, planning inspections and other unforeseeable issues. On the plus side, their estimate was free. I paid $50 each for two other chimney company inspections and bids that recommended we repair and reinforce the chimney, and add new bricks on the inside. Both of the other inspectors spent time looking under the house and on top of the roof looking into the chimney. Both inspectors said it would be ill advisable to tear down the existing brick as the city had banned the building of new brick fireplaces. As I'd just had our foundation fixed, the chimney was solidly planted into the new foundation. Both said it was a waste of money to rebuild the bottom of the chimney as it was solid. The cost of repairing was one-third of the cost of the bid for replacement. There were no unforeesable clauses in the bids. I got to keep my bricks that are now fully reinforced and insulated with Chamber-Tech 2000, a new lightweight mortar that extends the life of old chimneys. I received the same 20-year guarantee on the repair as Boston Brick & Mortar offered on a full rebuild. And I preserved a historic feature of an old house. I'm sure if you need a completely rebuilt chimney, Boston Brick & Mortar could be competitive. But if repairing is better than replacing, I recommend you look elsewhere.
Description of Work: Requested a quote to repair a chimney that was crumbling on top, needed a damper & pot, and was pulling away from the 100-year-old house.

Thing went well. They scheduled the job quickly, and we did run in to some issue with the inspector and had to hire someone to re-surface the street so the City inspector would sign off on the work, but that went well and was quick. They weren't the cheapest of the companies we got estimates from, but the rice difference was very small.

They were quite high; their quote was for over $4,000. They were so far out of line it was crazy. The guy was very punctual on his appointment; which was awesome. He sat down and gave me all the steps he would take and I explained what my vision was and he understood my vision. He also gave me alternates and ideas that I might want to pursue instead; which was nice. But, at the end of the day, I had 4 bids on the same project and they were the ultimate highest bid ever. I only ended up paying a contractor $800 for the same job; Boston's was too much. It was not a huge task so I think the bid was purposely too high because the job was too small for them and they knew I would not take it. I thought they did a very good job on the estimate process.
Description of Work: I got a quote from Boston Brick & Stone to put in a 2-1/2-foot high, 10-foot long cinderblock covered cement wall that I was going to use for a flowerbed. They also would have had to break away an old flower bed that was in the same spot.

The reason the HOA chose to hire Boston Brick and Stone was because of their follow-through, reputation, and professionalism. We received multiple bids for the job, but were impressed with Boston Brick's detailed and thorough bid, and although the quoted price was significantly higher than the other contractors, we feel that it was worth the extra expense. During the entire phase of the project - from the initial consultation to the final construction stages of the project - there was a specific project manager assigned to our job who was always available via phone or on sight with his crew. Toward the end of the project, we had a few changes but it was no problem because there was always the project manager readily available for us to consult with. After each day of construction, a representative contacted us to update the status of the project. We greatly appreciated the follow-through, since the project ended up going longer than originally planned (not the fault of Boston Brick), but due to permits needed by the City of Pasadena AND last-minute changes that we asked for. If an interested customer wants to work with the same project managers, be sure to mention the Flagstone Patio/Sidewalk Widening project in Pasadena (project dated June - November 2012), and you will be well-taken care of.
Description of Work: Project for a 16-unit condo complex. 1.) Replaced section of damaged flagstone (damage was due to invasive tree roots). 2.) Demolished existing walkway; built new walkway and widened it.

The job was scoped to take 2 - 3 days and it took 2. The gentlemen arrived on time the first day and were almost an hour early the second, which was great since I was hoping that they would not need the third day. When I came home the first night, I thought they hadn't done any work because the house was so clean. Of course, that was not the case - they were simply very clean in how they operate. I have peace of mind that I won't burn down my house now that the gaps are gone. The fireplace was used the night after they finished and has been in use every night but one since. My house is starting to feel more like my home now that my fireplace is working. I have a number of projects that I expect to perform over the next several years (refacing fireplace as well as driveway and backyard) and I expect to be calling upon them for each project.
Description of Work: When I purchased my home this year, the inspector mentioned that I had gaps in my firebox and should have those looked at by industry experts before I use the fireplace. I contacted another company and Boston Brick and Stone to come out and inspect and give an estimate. Boston Brick and Stone had a camera that they put up the flue liner to show where the problems were, and there were indeed many gaps, starting from the bottom and working their way up to the top (65 year old house). The other company only provided a visual inspection. Boston Brick and Stone was not only less expensive in their estimate, but also more thorough in their inspection which gave me a level of confidence in the quality of their work. They also have a guarantee on the work that they do, so appreciated! I also asked for an estimate to include a gas log starter as well as refacing the fireplace. The work done was to fill in the gaps and to install the gas log starter. I will be using Boston Brick and Stone when I decide to do the work of refacing the fireplace!

We called Boston Brick and Stone because our realtor had recommended them when we were buying our house, and because they had a lot of good reviews on Angie's List. They were very nice on the phone; scheduling an appointment was easy, though they were busy so we couldn't get anything for a week or two. When they arrived, they introduced themselves, then set up to do the chimney sweeping. They covered the floor and surrounding furniture, and the opening of the fireplace while they were cleaning. There was no mess that I observed. After the cleaning, they did an inspection with a camera. We got to see the images as they were running the camera up the chimney, and they explained the issues that they were seeing. Luckily our chimney was not damaged, but it does need to be relined. We got a quote for the work that would need to be done, and it was about what I expected. We need to reline the chimney or add a flue, extend the top, and add a damper. This will be about $2500-$4500 depending on whether or not we get a metal flue. They also were able to recommend someone who specializes in tilework, which was great because we have a Batchelder fireplace that needs some grout repair, and I don't want just anyone messing with it. The one thing that was a little bit of a bummer was that they were pretty enthusiastic about following up about doing the work. We tried to explain from the outset that we probably wouldn't be able to do the work this year, but we'd like to know how much money we were going to have to spend so we could work it into our budget and renovation plans. After their visit, I got several follow up emails that were nice, but slightly pushy. It took about 3 times of me saying, no, we can't do it now before they finally dropped it. That being said, we'll still probably have them do the work when the time comes because overall it was a good experience.

The inspection was great. The guy was very knowledgable and nice. He gave a very thorough inspection and explained it all to me in great detail. I had initially only wanted to add a spark arrestor to the chimney so when the quote came back for a lot more work that needed to be done, I made the call to only do a limited amount and asked the office for a quote on just adding spark arrestor and doing some crown repair. That's when things slowed down. The guy I spoke to, Tim (or Jim?), said he'd get back to me but never did. I had to call again and leave a message for him. I did not hear back. On the third try, I got a hold of him and he apologized and got back to me promptly with a quote and I scheduled the service. I was out of town when they did the repair but it looks great and I've been using my fireplace a lot. I'm grateful for the great work and I assume they were just super busy with winter coming and hopefully it wasn't a case of my job being less money and lower priority. Regardless, I would use them again and recommend.

Boston Brick and Stone was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. I called and they happened to have a cancellation and were able to come out immediately to inspect my chimney. The guys arrived and covered everything in my living room while waiting for the inspector. Once the inspector arrived, he immediately told me that he thought my chimney was damaged and before starting any work he was going to look at it from the roof. Unfortunately, my chimney is damaged and I need it to be entirely rebuilt. However, he did not charge me for anything which was great! He is going to send me a cost estimate to fix it in the next week or so. It's likely to be expensive, so not something i will do right away, but I found the entire exchange informative, courteous and responsible. I will definitely call them when i do decide to have my chimney repaired!

We called Boston Brick for an estimate for each of these projects. We were stunned at the cost and used Angie's List to identify other companies for bids. We found that the Boston Brick bids were within the ballpark with other recommended companies. We also found that Mark and others from Boston Brick were very knowledgeable and gave us better advice for solving a number of our construction challenges than the other companies. Each of the four jobs was done well though did ask them to redo some of the stucco on the garage. They did so with no argument and we were very satisfied. Though the cost was greater than we expected, we did find that Boston Brick supervisors and works were knowledgeable and did very professional work. We have been through a couple of hard rains and the garage has remained dry. We are pleased with all of their work.
Description of Work: We hired a deck contractor to rebuild 5 decks around our home. He had worked with Boston Brick on several previous jobs and highly recommended Boston Brick to do the following parts of our project: 1) Provide waterproofing of our hillside garage by building two drainage troughs with attached drainage pipes to redirect rain water 2) Build a new stucco wall below the decking to increase fire protection and eliminate the ability of skunks and other animals to house themselves under our home 3) Re-stucco garage walls after repairs 4) Add a new flagstone path from the front of the house to the backyard

Even though they quickly returned my call, they refused to come to my house to give me an estimate for any work. This seems like an odd way for a contractor to act.
Description of Work: I called Boston Brick to get an estimate for repair on my chimney. I was told I needed to pay for an inspection??? I am frankly amazed that they would not even come out to do a basic estimate for work without wanting to first charge me a fee. They were very responsive. They did an excellent job of clearing rubbish on the job except for 1 time in which they left a board with 2 screws on it. I later backed out of the garage and thought I may have flattened my tire. They didn't have a part during a portion of the job and therefore they didn't finish quite on time. They took care of my needs and did a beautiful job.

The whole process took a little more than three weeks. They took out an Los Angeles City permit for the work. All work was done to current code requirements, and inspections were signed off by the city building inspector as the work progressed. Their Job Foreman Anthony was quite friendly, explaining how all the work would be done, as was his son Alex, who took over the job in the latter stages. Amazingly enough, the demolition crew was able to remove 25 vertical feet of the brick chimney, from the top down, only working from the roof. The did not need to open any walls inside the house, which saved me all the dust and mess that would have caused. When they did work in the living room on the interior of the firebox, they were careful to put down heavy paper to protect the carpet and floor, and put plastic drop-cloths over nearby furniture to protect them. One change I asked for was to have a natural gas line installed in the firebox, which they did at the last minute, on the morning of the day they were to build the new firebox interior. All in all, considering that some major construction work was done on my house, they did the work and completed the job with minimal disruption. They were very good at cleaning up after each day's work, and left my house and property in the same condition it was when they arrived, except now I have a working fireplace. I would not hesitate to recommend Boston Brick & Stone to do more work on my house, or on another person's house.
Description of Work: I live in a two story wood frame house, built in 1906. The original chimney for the house was entirely of brick construction, and located in the center of the house, meaning the chimney is completely surrounded by the house, as opposed to being located on an exterior wall. The chimney was damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, which caused cracking in the mortar joints between the bricks that was visible from the attic. I put off repairing the chimney for many years because of the cost, and there were other priorities. The down side of that, was I could not use the fireplace for 18 years. My neighbor down the street, with a similar type house, built a fire the evening of the Northridge earthquake, without inspecting his chimney, and burned his house down. So, lesson learned. I asked Boston Brick and Stone to come inspect the chimney and give me an estimate for repair / retrofit to make the fireplace useable again. They came out and did an inspection, and then made up an extensive report that noted all the things that needed to be repaired or replaced, along with an estimate for the costs to do them. The repair / retrofit consisted of removing the old brick chimney down to the top of the firebox, and carting all of the old debris away. Then they removed the fire brick from the inside of the fireplace and replaced that with new. They carefully left in place the existing fireplace exterior that you can see from inside the house. Then after replacing the interior of the firebox, they installed a new flue damper, and a metal transition above that, from the top of the flue box to the round flue pipe. Next, they poured a foot thick concrete "bond beam" on top of the firebox, joining the new parts to the old in a airtight manner. Then they installed double wall, stainless steel lined flue pipe up through the house and out the roof. They then built a metal stud frame around the flue pipe, from the floor in the attic, up through the roof, and installed a code-rated spark arrestor cap on the top. They replaced the roofing shingles around the area when the new chimney structure comes out of the roof.
