Description of Work: 1) On 8/22/14: a) Diagnosed a basement shower drain problem as roots in the 2" lateral line and trap, which turned out to be accurate. Ran a video (at no charge) of both the 4" cast-iron branch line into which the lateral line drained and the main line to the county sewer. b) Diagnosed that the bottom of the 4" branch line was completely worn away, or "bottomed out," which turned out NOT to be accurate. c) Diagnosed a large root intrusion in the county pipe, just beyond my property line, which turned out to be accurate. Recommended for (a) tearing out slab in bathroom to access and replace the shower lateral line without disturbing the shower pan; for (b), inserting Permaliner inside the 4" branch line, a trenchless approach; and for (c), hydrojetting the whole main line and then inserting Permaliner in about 70 feet of the main line, right up to the county sewer. Estimate for all three jobs totaled $17,000-19,000. 2) On 8/29/14, in a separate issue, hydrojetted line from kitchen sink to branch line, a pipe that has often clogged over the years; cost was $450, which turned out to be somewhat higher than the competition. Also on 8/29, scheduled the hydrojetting of the main line. The B&B office called on the scheduled date, saying another job had run long, and asking to reschedule the next day, which was not available for me, so I declined. 3) I had used the locally owned and operated Benedict and Benedict for some 25 years as my go-to plumber, and had always felt that they were competent, reliable, and straight with me, if a bit high on the cost of routine procedures. But after the workers showed up in non-B&B uniforms and trucks, and after several questions from me, the team lead finally acknowledged that B&B had sold out to a larger firm that serves multiple states about a year ago. I felt as though they should have said so up front, which is why I gave them a C on Professionalism. The team lead was polite and articulate, and answered my many questions, but I still felt as though he might be trying to sell me more services than I needed, and at higher prices, particularly regarding the Permaliners. So I got quotes from highly recommended locally owned and operated competitors, which indicated that the solutions to my problems could be achieved at substantially lower cost and with a quality and reliability at least as good as B&B's. I ended up using one of those competitors, and am very happy with the results. (The branch line was not "bottomed out" at all, though I ended up replacing it for other reasons.) Others with a different history might be happy with B&B in their current incarnation, but I will not use them as my go-to plumber again, for either routine or major jobs.
