+ -1 moreMy response: "the time to make that decision was when we asked if you would do the job - not string us on for two months then decide you can’t do it?". Unfortunately there was more hinging on the painting timeframe for us that resulted in consequences for us - why contractors shouldn't be flaky about scheduling decisions. I understand the challenges of scheduling for contractors: I am a contractor and coordinate contractors for my employer in my other job. Bottom line: I can't recommend this contractor as he is a flake.
Description of Work: We accepted his estimate, he told us he was two months out to do the work, then when the two months was running down told us he said he was "unable to do the job at this time... I have too much on my plate."

Description of Work: Sunset painting prepped and painted the exterior of our home. They did an excellent job of preparation and painting. They were extremely nice and we felt 100% comfortable having them here. I have recommended them to other friends, and heard from others who have used them and were as happy as we were with their service. They left our home well painted and cleaned up thoroughly after themselves, and they made sure to leave us extra paint for any patch-up that may need to be done. Their bid was also substantially lower then the other bids we received.

They went above and beyond, painted our house beautifully and meticulously. We enjoyed having them here and we miss them now that they are gone. These are the guys you want painting your home.
Description of Work: Power washed entire house. Scraped flaking paint. Carefully masked all surfaces. We wanted our house color to match our attached building, Geordie delivered. Trim color matched to our rain gutters. After an extensive search, our Chinese red door color was great. Surfaces were carefully primed and painted. They did very meticulous work, painted our deck and painted trim on the guesthouse we were color matching.

I loved that he had confidence in his work and told me so. The problem with Angie's list, I can see, is that the companies they recommend are all going to be very good.

+ -1 moreSunset Painting was the first company I called. My Mother's home had not been painted in 15 or more years.. The owner of the company Geordie said he would be here at 8 am the following morning to a**** the house. At 7:55 Geordie pulled into the driveway. Wide awake and ready to do business. After walking around the house and pointing out a few area's that had to be repaired prior to painting.( I asked and her referred me to a great handyman, who took care of the problem area's.) He then sat with my brother and I, explaining what all he would do prior to painting, during the painting and after. At this point my Mother came out onto the porch. Geordie stood, removed his hat and extended his hand to her. He then told my Mother what he would be doing.. which I thought was so nice esp since she is the owner. At this point I just knew we couldn't go wrong with him. He was the only painting company we called. And were thrilled with his work!!! He did everything he said he would do and more. During the time he and his worker were here they were the most plesant workers I've ever came in contact with. From beginning to end Geordie remained focused and comitted to the job. We would recomend Geordie Mcbain owner of Sunset Painting Co. to anyone. There is not one thing I would of changed about the experience with him.
Description of Work: Power wash the exterior. Kill mold and mildew, spot prime bare wood, caulking/siding seams, caulk seams in siding and trim where needed. Mask windows. Remove awnings, spray body and eves and backroll as needed. Brush and roll trim.Take down masking and touch up. And the brand of paint he would be using.

+ -1 moreGeordie McBain presented himself as an alert, focused and professional painter. I had, after meeting the other two area painters recommended on Angies List, mentally selected Mr. McBain as the only one I would trust to do the best job on my beloved little house. I even solicited a second opinion from a painter outside of the Paradise-Chico area as to McBain's qualifications. The other (distant) painter was hoping to do the job himself, but after he heard who I had in mind (McBain), he wholeheartedly recommended I use Geordie McBain. Geordie worked closely with me during this time of intermittent rain and clear days to attempt to fit in the required week or so of estimated time to complete the paint job. Geordie also recommended a local carpenter to fix the problem areas that were above his expertise. The carpenter (Jeff Friendshuh), also did excellent work. My house was ready a couple of days before the weather break occurred in late January, 2011. When the weather break occurred, Geordie was there! He agreed to prepare, prime and (double-coat) paint the entire exterior of my house. He also agreed to "BACK ROLL" all the painted surfaces. Back rolling is the use of a roller AFTER the paint is sprayed onto the surface. Back rolling forces the paint, or in my specific case, the primer application, into the "pores" or open spaces of the wood surface. Back rolling is very important for the first coat on a wood or porous surface to weather-seal it. He was the highest bid by a few dollars, but as I have already stated, he was the most competent of the three painters I met. I wanted Behr's Premium Plus exterior used because of the excellent ratings received in Consumer Reports (June 2010). I agreed to purchase the 2 -3 five gallon containers of body paint and 2-3 gallons of trim necessary.
Description of Work: First, my home was built in 1958, and needed a lot of prepping, since it had been totally neglected for at least the past two (2) years (foreclosure house). This is a chronological list of the prepping and painting. Day 1 - (Wed.) Completely pressure-washed exterior with a diluted bleach solution (half-day). Day 2 - (Thurs.) Sanded and scraped all exterior surfaces, loosening up old non-adhering paint. Then caulked all crevices between boards and other areas that needed to be sealed from the weather elements. The house appeared to have no visible cracks nor crevices after Geordie completed this phase - totally weather-protected with new caulking. Day 3 - (Fri.) Completely masked off and / or covered all windows, doors, and other areas that will not receive the main ("body") paint. Primed entire house (with Kilz2) because chosen color was YELLOW. Back rolled all primer application. If new color was to be a darker color, then priming would have been over bare spots only, including those that had been uncovered by scraping and wire-brushing old paint surface. Day 4 - (Sat.) With rain predicted for the following day (Sunday), repriming most of the house to cover all traces of "old color" bleed through. Also finished priming upper fascia boards by hand, brushing from the rooftop of the house. The painter's experience with priming the entire exterior surface also gave him experience as to how many five (5) gallon paint containers the owner was to purchase to cover the house with two (2) complete coats of body paint. Trim paint will be an additional two (2) one-gallon containers of "off white". [Edit: later changed to dark brown] The temperature hovered around 48.2 - 50 deg. F (9-10 deg. C,) until 10:00 a.m., then quickly plunged 4 - 5 deg. C.(9 deg. F), with a southerly wind bringing fog into the area. It rained that (Sat.) night. Day 5 - (Sun.) Rain. Day 6 - (Mon.) Painted body of house "Bicycle Yellow". Three-quarters of day. Day 7 - (Tues.) Recoated body of house yellow. Mixed more black into ("Caramel Latte" color) Behr trim paint. Too much red in Caramel Latte conflicted with yellow body paint. Removed masking over doors and windows. Started painting all trim with the modified Caramel Latte color. Day 8 - (Wed.) Finished second coat on all trim. Cleaned up all masking tape and other debris. I had about 3 gallons of main ("body" = Bicycle Yellow) paint left over, and about a half-gallon of trim remaining. Description of Work: We can't begin to say how great Sunset painting is! The owner does the work with a helper. He is outstanding... Totally worked to do everything we wanted, including using a specific type of paint. Many contractors will only use one company's paint, but he was fine with our request. We wanted to use top of the line, Aura paint from Benjamin Moore. He completely prepped, scrapped, primed and did 2 full coats on the whole house. We bought the paint, he furnished everything else (including one type of special primer). Our house was built in the 60's and has shingles on the lower part of the front, the rest is stucco and wood trim. Without the quality job he did we would have faced replacing the shingles. Our house should last without having to paint again for at least 30 years or more!

+ -1 moreSunset pressure washed, applied a sticky coat of some special stuff that makes the next coat adhere, then a coat of stuff that fills in cracks, then proceeded to apply two coats of paint. I know our home is well protected! Everything he said he would do, he did. He continually kept us informed . Cleaned up daily, took care not to get paint on anything other then what needed to be painted. They were friendly, trustworthy, and the owner's "Can do" attitude is refreshing. This company is A++. We have had lots of remodeling jobs completed in the past 9 years and we are so very pleased with Geordie and company.
Description of Work: We had the exterior of our 3-story home painted. Sunset Painting was highly recommended to us by a coworker. We called a total of four companies and got quotes. Sunset's quote wasn't the lowest, but it wasn't the highest. What made us go with Sunset was the owner's attention to detail. He pointed out areas of dry rot that none of the other companies noticed. Were they just going to paint over those areas?
