Very unprofessional office manager, Cathleen. The owner not taking responsibility for the lack of communication, unprofessional /rude staff, and incomplete and wrong performance. The problem is not the time waiting for the city to approve the plans. The problem is that the plans are wrong and missing critical information that needs to be REDONE. The problem is not the waiting, it is that Cathleen yelled several times during the phone call, and when I asked her to not do that she told me "Calm down, this is how we do things!" Then she lied several times about the status of the work and told the architect not to contact us - when he wanted to do so to keep us informed. Waiting for the city to approve plans is necessary, waiting for the city to approve INCOMPLETE/WRONG plans is incompetency. Charging double the amount of other companies is price gouging.
Description of Work: Plans were to be completed after the house burned down. There were many excuses as to why it took several weeks before the plans "could get started", then the plans are not complete, and finally, after the final payment was made, Cathleen and her boss decided that they were not going to pick up the plans as stated in the contract and the emails, they told us we had to do it. She even told us they were so busy they could not complete the work - as if we were even interested in continuing with the lies and incompetency .

JP Building was great. What I liked the most was that they were very responsive. I gave feedback on some minor details that weren't to my liking--for example pencil marks on the installed quartz counters, and they quickly sent someone out to adjust the work. Additionally, there was a lot of "mission creep" on my part. It seemed like I was finding more around the house for them to repair, and with little notice they took care of things--caulking, patching holes in the wall, adding grout in a bathroom, and more. The toilet install was a last minute, same day notice and repair type of thing, they were finishing up the kitchen and I asked if they could install a toilet. Jesus was great in helping us find a way to update the kitchen without doing a full remodel--for example, they resurfaced and painted cabinets but also added a few new custom cabinets to match. They were also pretty true to the original work schedule. The project was completed a week late, but considering all the additional work they did, it was a relatively short period of time--three weeks in total. I think at times the communication with the office could have been clearer, regarding when workers would be coming to the house (or not). However, overall, I would definitely use them again, and I have recommended them to many friends already.
Description of Work: JP General Building was referred by a family friend who used them for their kitchen remodel. We purchased our first home and had Jesus do a walk through to get estimates on a number of potential repairs. In the end we decided to have the staircase railing replaced with a custom fabrication, a kitchen remodel, turn a closet into a pantry, and various other jobs around the house including installing a toilet, mounting a 72" TV, installing a new light fixture, painting, and other minor work.

After getting three other bids from contractors I chose J P General Building, Inc. and Jesus to do the job for us and am VERY HAPPY with my choice. Jesus was a wonderful contractor and his subs were great. They came when they said they would, always cleaned up afterwards and were very nice and HONEST and did excellent work. I occasionally made changes to what I wanted and this was never a problem for them. But the jewel in the crown of J P General Building is Cathleen Dunn, Jesus' assistant and the main person I talked to whenever I had a question or change or whatever. In my opinion she runs that company and knows as much about building and remodeling as any contractor. She always kept me informed of the status of the progress, notified Jesus immediately when I had questions and always got back to me within less than 24 hours. And on the rare occasion that I had a question that she couldn't answer she would consult with Jose and very quickly get back to me with the answer. Thanks to Cathleen, Jose and their crews this job went much more smoothly than I ever imagined. While we own the condo, a tenant lives there. My husband, a retired builder/remodeler, and I live in a different state. Were he in better health my husband would have been out there for the duration of the work to "supervise" and make sure everything was being done correctly and to his high standards. But that was impossible so the tenant would call us daily and email us pictures of the progress. The tenant was extremely pleased with the way it turned out, as were we. I would STRONGLY suggest using this company to anyone needing work done. Price was fair, communication was great and finished product was more than we'd expected.
Description of Work: Replaced flooring, dry wall, built custom kitchen cabinets, custom cabinet doors for two bathrooms, installed new granite countertops and backsplash in kitchen, replaced angle stops throughout, installed new kitchen sink, new faucets in kitchen and two bathrooms and various other smaller jobs in our condo. We had water damage due to angle stop bursting in kitchen and then added a few other things we wanted done during the remodeling.

They did a good job. They repaired earthquake damage, took down a chimney, added in a zero clearance fireplace. They were on time, cleaned up after themselves, and did what they said they were going to. Any issues we may have had were cleared up very quickly.

They did an absolutely beautiful job! They were extremely professional and seemed to be the best priced around! They were really puntucal and willing to do anything that was asked! They didn't hold you up at all and did all the work within one week's time.
Description of Work: They restored a wall in our new home to make one bedroom into two and built a closet and installed a door. They did all the electrical work and put new hardwood flooring after tearing up old carpet. They also put a new door on our service porch. They put a new water heater in after ours stopped working. They brought everything up to code.

Jesus and his office staff were extremely professional. He showed up right on time and very nicely explained what was required to replace the back stairway on my four-unit building. I received the estimate in a timely fashion and mailed the deposit check. It then turned out that the City of Burbank was requiring a great deal more than was expected for a simple replacement of rotted decades-old stairs, and I wound up calling a stair and deck specialty company -- thinking this would somehow expedite things. JP was very gracious and returned my deposit quickly. I'm sorry we weren't able to work together and wouldn't hesitate to use this company in the future. P.S. - Four months later, the stairs are not replaced, the back doors are boarded up, my tenants with small children are having to go down the front stairs and around the building to the laundry room, and the City of Burbank still thinks they need more drawings. . . .

They had to go from the front of the house to the back. They layed down plastic on the carpet, and started work. Very professional and hard working. Brought the right equipment to break up the cement, and spanish tiles. The balcony looks great. I also had a water leak the third day they were working on the house. The water leak had nothing to do with the job. They took time to help me find the leak which was hard to find. The leak was under a cement walk way so I was very confused. By process of elimination we figured out where the leak was. they also fixed the leak for me. The workers were hard working and you felt like they were proud of their job.
Description of Work: tore down the spanish tiles on balcony, broke up cement underneath. angled and shaved the wood base below so that water would drain away from the window. Poured new cement and layed down new lament surface. Replace two access doors on the side of the house. Plugged water leak pipe.

They were responsive. They were very competitive in their bidding. We actually as a fluke found another contractor that had done something that we really liked. They were very cordial. They were great. I am pretty sure that if I had not come up on this other one, I would have gone with them. In the end, we did more than what he proposed for because we saw this other unit that this guy had done and we wanted that. His bid was competitive and comparable; we just went in another direction. He was timely, and he got back to me. He communicated.

They had done work for me and they have given me quotes for other jobs. I like them a lot and they are very professional. He took off his shoes in my house. I thought that was nice. When they started working. They put down plastic where they were sitting. They listened to music and they were quiet. they just worked and worked. They only took a break for lunch.
Description of Work: I used J P General Building. They gave me estimates for different jobs. They put cement on my porch for an overhang. This was to get fire insurance. They also did that in the front of my house. There was a gutter system next to it. They just cleaned all my gutters also.

I chose JP General because of its proximity to my home and because, based on Angie's List reviews, he had done jobs in my budget price range and had an "A" rating. I had called several contractors since the incident occurred (8/6/12) and one didn't show, one showed and never returned and one wanted triple what the insurance company was going to give me. My insurance company had provided a 12-pg estimate of the work to be done. Jesus stopped by on 8/28/12 (almost 3 weeks after I had become fed up with trying to find someone acceptable to the insurance company or someone who would even show up). He explained that providing a similar estimate would take time, but he would do it as quickly as possible. I received the estimate on or about 9/5/12. Jesus was right on the money in terms of what my insurance company was willing to pay (less the deductible) and he was the only one that was willing to prepare his estimate in the same way the insurance company did. No one else wanted to go to that detail (room-by-room, wall by wall) everyone wanted to "estimate". It still took a while to convince the insurance company to not require a second estimate. As a result it wasn't until 9/27/12 that I signed the contract with JP and work began early October. Jesus was quiet and attentive. His workers were on time and worked efficiently. They cleaned up as best they could under the circumstances and protected furniture and kitchen areas with plastic. If I had any concern it was taken care of quickly. Jesus, within reason, aims to please his customer. The office staff was the go-between for questions and they were always pleasant and prompt. The job turned out better than previous jobs I have had done. It was impeccable and, when some trim popped out, a worker was sent with tool gun in hand to repair it almost 2 weeks after completion! They started the job earlier than expected and finished early (10/17/12). Anytime you have to turn your home over to strangers, it's difficult. Anytime a disaster requires you to live under conditions foreign to you, it's difficult. Many times I wanted to move and come back when it was over. Thankfully, there was a second floor to retreat to and pretend none of this was happening. The progress I saw on a daily basis gave me hope that this would all be over soon, JP General Building, Inc. is the contractor to call when you want the job done and done well. "Thank you" to you and your staff for a job well done.
Description of Work: Water damage repair due to an under sink filtration system cannister bursting. My husband left the house at 3:30 a.m., everything was fine. I got up at 6:30 a.m. and as I came downstairs I noted how shiny my laminate floors were and suddenly realized it was water. Water was running out of the garage, front door and back door. After sloshing to the kitchen to turn off the water (thank God I wasn't electrocuted) I called the insurance company. It took 10 days to dry the house out completely. Oddly enough the company handling the dry-out (also a construction company) didn't provide an estimate for the repairs when requested (hmm, go figure). JP's task was to install laminate throughout lower floor of home except bath and kitchen. Remove carpet and padding. Install 24" of drywall throughout lower floor (all lower walls and insulation had been removed during the drying process) and reinsulate where necessary. Texture drywall, skimcoat and repaint all rooms (including bath and kitchen) and a portion of the upper floor and hall due to high ceilings. Remove and reset all drapery hardware. Replace all trim.

This was the third company I called for an estimate. J P General showed up right on time. Explained what they were going to do. Unllike the other companies I called, J P did not try to talk me into extra needed work done. The crew showed up promptly, The two men working the eaves layed plastic sheeting down in my car port, worked hard, no radio playing. They plastered my back balcony eaves, which means they had to come thru my house. The first thing they did was to lay plastic sheeting on my floor from the front door to my balcony. Very neat work, they were not sloppy. Clean lines working with the plaster. Same with the bathroom. All work finished on time.
Description of Work: They plastered my roof eaves in front and back. I had to do this to get home owner insurance for fire. Also remodeled bathroom. New tiles, new ceiling, redo shower and new lighting fixtures in bathroom. Trimmed trees side of house and in back. Needed this for fire insurance also. Bathroom was worked on in Feb. of 2010.
We have used them three times before and they are incredible. They are exceptional. They are incredibly fast, clean, courteous and thorough. They do such an excellent job and they are so incredibly fast. They started in March and we kept having them come back to do additional work. When you call to get an estimate they are there instantly. They bring samples to make sure everything is exact. They pick up all the materials and they don't want to get paid until the work is complete and you are satisfied. They are incredible. Their price is reasonable and average. Compared to the quality they are inexpensive. We will use them for everything.
Description of Work: We used J P General Builders to remove a balcony and they opened and sealed two patio doors. They did concrete work, hardwood flooring, put new drains in for drainage because there was no drainage. This was at our old house. At our new house they put in a wrought iron staircase and cut out a wall to put in new wrought iron to open up a loft. They did crown molding, tile work and a little bit more hardwood floors.

They were very good, very thorough, and very professional. They had a bit of a delay, but they were always in contact with us. When they finally arrived at a date and time they were right on time. They haven?t done any work yet, but we are strongly considering them.

They are very professional. They gave a detailed quote. When my husband first called them the receptionist spoke very well and fixed up an appointment and called back on time. The person who met my husband was very honest, decent, and true professional. We will definitely use them in the future.
Description of Work: We are having J P General Building Inc to do some work right now in one of our rented house. We got an estimate from them in February. The estimate they gave was for removing a balcony, changing a window, and repair a water leakage. They are to build a floor and put concrete on the floor, fix the roof, paint one of the walls in the bedrooms, put drywall, and do insulation.

The remodel from start to finish went as smooth as could be expected considering the extent of work performed. Jesus and his team were prompt and worked diligently to completion. They cleaned up after each days work as well as possible. I did authorized some extra work as some unexpected problems were discovered (dry rot) but the cost was reasonable. I provided a small downpayment and paid JP as work performed. All went smoothly. I choose to keep costs modest by not doing a high end remodel given the location of the home. (San Fernando valley).
Description of Work: I have waited a period of time before writing this review. After a lengthy period I am happy to report that the work performed by JP General Building has remained high quality. They remodeled our 54 year old 1290 square foot house. Work included remodeling two bathroom's. Both needed to be completely rebuild, one more than the other due to exterior dry rot. They replaced old plumbing with new copper lines, replaced two bathroom windows and one bedroom window. In the living room they converted an old 10 foot slider to an 8 foot slider and converted an 8 foot window to a six foot window. On the exterior they removed old brick and wood siding, rebuilt where dry rot was present, and replaced with new insulation and cement plank siding.

Mr. Pena was very responsive and great to work with. He always returned my calls or had his office do so. There was a problem with the rotted frame supports for a large section of glass block at the entry side of house that he had his crew make extra effort to save so we would not have to replace all the glass block. He met the schedule and kept things on track through the whole process.
