About us

There’s A Reason Over 35,000 Families Have Trusted Alan Smith Pool Plastering Since 1981 We Always Insist On Doing Every Job Exactly Right. *No cheap sub standard cements, aggregates or pigments in our pool finishes *No sub-contracted, unqualified & inexperienced plastering finishers(We only have an “A” team) *Every job is run by a team of experts and has a dedicated project manager. *No inflated pricing, all estimates come from a company price list. Quality work at a fair price. What a concept! Yes you have dozens-maybe even hundreds of options- for resurfacing and remodeling your pool. And the question we get all the time is “why should we go with Alan Smith Pool Plastering?” To be up front with you, we’re not the cheapest contractor. We’re also not the fastest. If you are looking for fast and cheap, head down to the Home Depot or Lowe’s or call around to some of our competitors. That being said, our work is not exclusively for the rich and famous either. In fact, our typical customer has a 15,000 gallon pool, makes between $75,000-$100,000 in household income, and spends between $5,000-$15,000 with us on their pool and spa renovation.(yes several choose to upgrade and remodel their entire backyard with pavers, patio covers, masonry and outdoor lighting) In other words, we cater to people who can afford to do the job right the first time. People who want the job to outlast their lifetime, and we don’t want to save a few dollars by using cheap materials and labor instead of quality products and an experienced work force. Here’s what your really need to know. Our pool surface warranty is 10 YEARS because once we resurface your pool it is NOT coming off since we use advanced pool prepping technology that creates a high strength bond. Most of our jobs are from past customer and referrals from friends, neighbors and family-they like us enough to come back. We do a really good job-and we have since 1981. We DO NOT clean pools. Call us to discuss your project.

This was a big project. In total, most of my back yard was torn out and replaced, and my pool replumbed and resurfaced. I got bids from several complains, but Alan Smith Pools stood out in their professionalism and responsiveness. Their price point was a little higher than other companies, but I went with them based on their great reviews and our initial interactions. I think I made a good choice. Throughout the project, they were professional, on time, and responsive to my questions or concerns. I made several changes to the original plans as we went forward, and they were accommodating to my requests. The quality of their work was excellent as well. I was very happy with the process and the outcome. Highly recommend.
Description of Work: Replumbed and replastered pool, tore out and replaced decking, removed old patio and installed natural stone patio, replaced a wall with a stack stone facade, put in water features,

Your pool went through a complete transformation! The quartzsite stack stone on the raised bond beam coordinated perfectly with the Tahoe Quartz pool finish you chose! Replacing the deck and using the washed mesa bluff coping pulled the pool area in very nicely. Thank you for choosing our company!

Alan Smith and his crews are the best, professional, knowledgeable and courteous. From day one with the initial interview and job quote, I was impressed. The man knows his stuff. After a plan of attack was in place the work began. The crews were always hard working and pleasant. Each day before left they did a thorough cleaning of the work area. When I had questions I called Alan and he was always there with an answer. My pool is now complete and she sparkles!

From the first call Steve came out to evaluate and quote my project. Steve was extremely professional and informative on our options. Steve explained in great detail the difference between plaster, quartz and pebble. He left us color samples of all 3 to place in the pool to see what the true colors were when wet. He also left me with several tile brochures. Steve got back to me the following day with a detailed quote. I contacted 2 other companies for pricing, both were prompt with their quotes and all 3 came within 5% of each other. This being said, price was not going to be my deciding factor on with company we would be using. I was extremely impressed with Steve and his attention to detail in explaining the project and all my options along with telling me what possible unforeseen problems could occur during the project. So we picked Allen Smith Pools, I called the office to go down and see their water wall to choose which product we would use to resurface the pool, but Steve was out on a sales call. When I called and explained that this was the only free time my wife and I would be available to come in, Allen said he was going to be going on a call in a hour but if we would like to come down and take a look he would wait for us. We arrived and Allen spent extra time with us going over the different options, pulled our pictures up on the tv so he was familiar with the project and helped us in making our decision. He also offered a few ideas and options we were not aware of when it came to lighting. I called Steve and we finalized the contract, his team emailed me a copy of our contract along with the scheduled start date. I received an email the day before the team would come out for the demolition. Each night through out the project I would receive an email stating what they would be doing that following day along with what time and crew would arrive. When it came to installing the tile, Mike called me to meet at the house to discuss some options on a back wall with an area that could use something to give it a finished look. One option was adding a strip of tile which would add to the cost of the project or finish the area with the sanded grout that should have been used when they first built the pool and there would be no added cost. We picked the grout and it came out great, thanks Mike! The different crews came through each day and cleaned up as it was left the day before. Everyone on their team were extremely friendly. Our overall project came out well above our expectations! The project could not have went any smoother. We have worked with 2 different pool builders over the years along with several contractors on this house, I can honestly say Allen Smith Pools is the with out a doubt the most professional company I have ever contracted to work on my home.
Description of Work: Retile and resurface pool and spa, replace lights and child safe drain covers. We went from a late 70's discolored and cracking plaster with brown 70's tile to a updated slate tile with a tiger eye pebble finish.

Calling Alan Smith Pools for re-plastering was the best thing we have ever done. This company is top-notch professional. From the very start, they made the entire process very clear and performed exactly as they promised in a timely manner. But it's more than that. What makes them stand out is the awesome quality of work. Each step, from demolition, to tile, to re-plastering, was done quickly, cleanly, no mess, no worries. We had the marble mix in the white plaster and it's awesome. The finished tile work and plaster job are works of art and a pleasure to feel. It makes our pool look and feel better than it was originally.

Alan came out to inspect our hot tub the very next day after I called him. He was prompt and very knowledgeable and gave me an honest assessment of what it would take to get our spa back in shape. Even though Alan does not work with our type of hot tub (so that we ended up not using his services), he did not charge us for coming out to give us an estimate. I was very impressed with Alan's professionalism.

Eric and his crew were extremely professional and nice. They resurfaced and repainted our slide and rocks around the pool. They also acid washed the pool and removed all the rusty stains at the bottom of the pool. Also replaced pool light. They came on time and got the job completed on time. They were very careful and knew what to do and cleaned up after completion. Our pool, slide and rocks look brand new. We love their work and customer service. Would definitely use them in the future. Prices are also reasonable compared to others.

Alan Smith Pools did an awesome job upgrading the stained plaster of our 14 year old with a beautiful Pepple Tec product that has turned the pool into the center piece our yard rather than the eye sore it had become due to age. The Smith team were on time, professional, responsive, and took care of everything we asked in a very short period of time. I highly recommend Alan Smith Pools to anyone who is looking for a new pool or to upgrade a current pool. If there was a rating of A++ I would give it to Alan Smith Pools.

Mr. Spain came to our home and gave us an estimate. We liked the information, his ideas, and contracted the service. The group was very professional and kept us informed of everything that was happening daily. The pool was drained the night before and the next day, work began. It took a few days. We did encountered some problems. When the plaster job was finish, a powder was placed to dry it and ended up staining it. We were asked to wait and see if it would disappeared. It didn't. The pool was drained again then acid washed at no cost. We didn't get upset because they were really honest and said "we will be here until you are happy." And they were. Finally, it was done. It looks really nice.
Description of Work: Replastered the pool (11,000 gallon pool), replaced the seal around the pool and concrete, replaced the pool light, replaced the old tile for glass tile, and updated the pool valves.

Thank you for the review. It is always our priority to have a satisfied customer. We put in a beautiful Tahoe Blue Quartz finish in the pool. This pool was formerly a fiberglass finish pool that we converted to a Quartz. This is fairly common for us to do. It never gets old hearing a review from another happy customer. Thank you!

Overall, the quality of the work was excellent, the price was within other estimates, but the communication was terrible. The salesperson who came out was great, and I was able to meet at their office to look at samples of materials and finishes. We I signed the contract, we set up a date right after the demo for him to come out with the people in charge of the different departments to discuss everything and make the final decisions. As it turns out, he injured himself and had a dr's appointment for our scheduled time, so just the masonry guy came, and he was great with the BBQ ideas, but no so helpful for the pool. I do like the way the baja bench came out, but i would have liked a little more help with the design. I don't know if the salesperson would have been available, if the job would have gone more smoothly, but the scheduling left a lot to be desired. There was close to a week between the demo and any other work starting. Work only seemed to get done when we called or emailed. I felt that we needed to keep on them to keep the project moving. I couldn't get calls, emails or texts returned, and the project manager didn't know what was going on. No one kept us informed of what was going to be done and when. We were under time pressure because we were refinancing, and appearently an empty pool is a hazard. The salesperson hadn't written down the coping color or our tile choice, which the project manager didn't look ahead to see and it slowed the project by a week while the tile was ordered. The pool got filled by the date specified in the contract, but it takes a week until it can be used due to the water chemistry, which they didn't mention. If I used them again, I would put in economic consequences for not finishing on time, and not just a date. They did a good job, but I felt like I was the general contractor, which is why I hired them!
Description of Work: We remodeled our pool which included new Pebble-Tec, concrete coping, new tile, added a baja bench and changed the steps nd existing bench. In addition, we replaced the brick ribbons in our patio with concrete to match the new coping. We also replaced our BBQ with a complete outdoor kitchen.

Hello member, We are glad to hear that the project was finished on schedule, within budget and with a high level of quality. Unfortunately, the project manager assigned to your job experienced the loss of a family member at the start of your job. We were not aware of his loss until several days after the fact. As you can imagine, this had an effect on him that spilled over into his professional life. Normally, we are praised for our communication during a project, but unfortunately on your project there were some unforeseen circumstances. These circumstances led to less communication than what we typically provide. Your contract states that no one is to use the pool for the first 7 days while the pool surface is "curing". This is a very important step for the aesthetic appeal and long term strength of your pool surface. We are glad that your project turned out well in the end. Thank you for your business!

I can't say enough about the professional job Alan Smith Pools did on our pool. Each and every crew knew what they were doing. From prep to cleanup I was impressed. The whole job from Demo, then New Tile, to Hydrazzo Plaster, to a light acid wash, to polishing the Hydrazzo marble and quartz took two weeks. Well with the three week estimate I was given at the time I signed the contract. As I write this review I'm on my second day of water treatment and brushing of the pool. A service Alan Smith Pools provides as part of the contract. This is a very important step to assure the new plaster cures properly. I interviewed five different companies and Alan Smith Pools was the only company that provides this service. The other companies plaster the pool....fill it with water and ask for the final payment, then advise the home owner to hire a "start up" service to do the water testing, chemicals etc. Alan Smith Pools also is the only one of the five I interviewed that offers a ten year warranty. Everyone else's was five years. A quick example of the type of crews Alan Smith Pools uses: At the time of signing the contract we picked out pewter for the color of grout for the tile. When the tile crew showed up he told me the company sent him with pewter and white for the grout color, which did I want? I'm not sure now, says I. The tile crew said we'll come get you when it's time to grout. When they came and got me they had most of the tile up, but they had grouted six tiles in white, and grouted six in pewter. At that point I had such a great visual it was hands down, pewter it is. That's the level of service that Alan Smiths people provide.
Description of Work: Remodeled my twenty year old pool. Demo the old tile and plaster. Install new tile. Four turtle mosaics. One crab mosaic. Apply new Hydrazzo plaster. Light acid wash and polishing of the Hydraqzo plaster crushed marble and quartz. Saw cut around the pool and old expansion joints and apply sandstone deco seal around the pool and to all old areas. Install new Hayward LED pool light.

We bought a new house which we are remodeling and don't live in yet. I booked an appointment with one of the designers/estimators from this pool company to give me an estimate to resurface the pool and remodel the pool area. Drove to the house to meet him. I waited an hour for him to show up and finally gave up and left. He called me and said he had emailed me that he'd be late. Sorry I didn't check my email during the hour I was sitting there. They had my cell phone number and should have called. He offered to go look at the pool by himself, then come up with a design on which he could base an estimate. After several days I emailed him to see if the document was forth coming. Three days later what basically amounted to a price list for all the various surfaces, plumbing, equipment would be. No design. Not much of anything but a price list. Next.

Hello member, We understand your frustration. Originally, your estimate was scheduled for 7/16/13 with an arrival time from 1-2pm. We typically give our estimators a 2 hour window of arrival due to traffic conditions in Los Angeles. Your estimator sent a message at 1:30pm to alert you of his traffic situation. Unfortunately, he was 15 minutes late. Once he was there, he measured your pool and decks, took pictures, and put together a proposal to do the work you requested. Depending on the scope of the work, a proposal can take several days to put together. In this case, you had extensive pool, plumbing and deck work to price out. You stated our estimator did not send a design to go with the proposal. A design is not part of our proposal package unless the customer decides to pay for that professional service. We are able to provide proposals off of plans if the customer provides them, or we are able to draw plans per the customer’s request and agreed upon fee. We wish you the best of luck in finding a reputable contractor. Please don’t hesitate to call us if you have a change of heart.

Roy from AS came out today, as scheduled, and did a comprehensive evaluation of the project and discussed my desires with me. He will be writing an estimate and getting back to me in the coming week. Overall, this was a efficient and pleasant process Since this original review I have been called by Jeff Smith, unfortunately I was not able to talk with him yet. The misunderstanding was pointed out to me on my voice mail. I will update when appropriate. Original: I called back the office today and spoke with the person with whom I had scheduled the original appointment. She said she would send Roy an e-mail to see what was going on...thus far I am unimpressed. I will be getting multiple estimates; however, this is not a good way to start a relationship.

He will be writing an estimate and getting back to me in the coming week. Overall, this was a efficient and pleasant process. Was scheduled for an estimate on the 28th. I waited to hear from the estimator Roy...he never showed up or called. I was apparently booked for 6/3/2013 because of the Holiday; however, I misunderstood the person who booked the appointment. I thought she was booking for the next day not the next week. I will update the review when I actually have the informatoin to make a vaild comment.

Several weeks after my inquiry at Leslie's, I got a call from Alan Smith pools, and scheduled a visit by one of their estimators on May 4th. The estimator came by on that date, inspected the existing equipment, took measurements, and gave me a vague high-level overview of options, and indicated that he needed a few days to come back to me with a formal quote. After a few days of not hearing back, I emailed him on 5/7 and asked for a status of the quote. He responded that he would get it to me by the end of the next day. Not only did I not get any quote the next day as promised, I did not hear at all again from the estimator. I emailed him again on 5/14 and asked for another status, and I got no response to my email. I feel that my time was wasted and his lack of follow through whether intentional or not is a strong indicator of lack of respect for the customer with this organization. The organization should have systems in place to ensure all customer inquiries are addressed properly. If the estimator and/or company feel that the job is too small or not worth their time, it is still in their professional interest to communicate that respectfullly to their clients. UPDATE 5/29/13 After submitting the above review, was contacted by the estimator. Apparently, he had sent the quote to the wrong email address. When I received the quote, there was nothing on there about solar heating, only automation options. While I understand that mistakes happen, I also know that if I was seen as a valuable customer, the estimator and/or company would have followed up with me directly to know a) if i received the quote, and b) if I had questions about the quote, and c) if I wanted to move forward with the project. Clearly I was not on their priority list. I'm sure that the company can provide good service to the right clients with the right projects. Just wish that they had not wasted my time.
Description of Work: Alan Smith pools was referred to me through an inquiry I made through Leslie's in Sherman Oaks to provide an estimate on solar pool heaitng and automation installlation on my existing in-ground swimming pool and spa.

We have a pool that was installed over 40 years ago and was in need of a redo. We had at least 3 companies come and provide us with estimates. They were all about the same as far as money, but Allen Smith Pools gave us a much more detailed estimate of the work to be done and the time line. We decided to change the pool from plaster to pebble-tech and their price was still the same as for plaster. We asked for a new skimmer, new LED light (with colors), an updated main drain to meet current safety codes and a reconfiguration of the pool steps. I also asked them to remove the old diving board. They provided us with a time table to do the work of about 2 weeks from start to finish. Once the job was started, they arrived on time daily and cleaned up before leaving each day. The job consisted of removing all of the old coping and plaster and then reconfigure of the steps, new skimmer installed, and the main drain. The new coping was installed and then the border tiles installed. Once these items setup, then the pebble surface was installed. The pool was then filled and treated. They came back a couple of times to check and again treat the pool until it was ready to use. We had no issues with the crew or the work performed. Their supervisors and crew keep us up to date. We have recommended this company to others already.

in September of 2012 i contacted the company through Leslie's Pool. Didn't hear from them. Asked again and again for the appointment and after numerous calls and faxes from the store finally got someone in in mid April. He looked at the pool, took all info he needed and promised to send us an estimate. today , a month later i still don't have any calls or emails. No one followed up. When I called a week ago I was told that someone will get back to me shortly. A week later no call. I am moving on to the other contractors. They might do a good job when they get to it, but this is hardly a company I trust to show up.

We are very sorry for the experience the customer had in this situation. We keep a very detailed master log of all phone calls, e-mails and faxes received from potential customers requesting a project estimate. We have no record of receiving a request for estimate from the customer in September of 2012. When we were contacted by the customer in April 2013, we followed up with the customer immediately and set up an appointment time. Unfortunately, after our Designer did meet with the customer, they failed to follow through and provide a project estimate in a timely manner. We have attempted to contact the customer by phone and e-mail to apologize to them for the lack of follow through. After over 30 years in business, and over 25,000 successfully completed projects in the Southern California area, this most certainly is not our normal mode of operation. With over 85% of our business coming by personal referral, we could not continue in business for very long in this manner. While the spring and summer months are extremely busy times for our Designers, it is not an acceptable excuse for failing to get a project estimate to a potential customer. We are very sorry for this aberration in our operating procedures and will strive to not have this occur again in the future .
