Alan Smith Pool Plastering & Remodeling

Pool and Spa Service, Plaster, Pool Sales Construction and Installation,

About us

Over 40,000 Families Have Trusted Alan Smith Pool Plastering Since 1981. We Always Insist On Doing Every Job Right. *No cheap substandard cements, aggregates or pigments in our pool finishes *No sub-contracted, unqualified & inexperienced plastering finishers (We only have an “A” team) *Every job is run by a team of experts and has a dedicated project manager. *No inflated pricing, all estimates come from a company price list. Quality work at a fair price. What a concept! Yes, you have dozens-maybe even hundreds of options- for resurfacing and remodeling your pool. And the question we get all the time is “why should we go with Alan Smith Pool Plastering?” To be up front with you, we’re not the cheapest contractor. We’re also not the fastest. If you are looking for fast and cheap, head down to the Home Depot or Lowe’s or call around to some of our competitors. That being said, our work is not exclusively for the rich and famous either. In fact, our typical customer has a 15,000 gallon pool, makes between $85,000-$110,000 in household income, and spends between $10,000-$20,000 with us on their pool and spa renovation.(yes several choose to upgrade and remodel their entire backyard with pavers, patio covers, masonry and outdoor lighting) In other words, we cater to people who can afford to do the job right the first time. People who want the job to outlast their lifetime, and we don’t want to save a few dollars by using cheap materials and labor instead of quality products and an experienced work force. Here’s what you really need to know. Our pool surface warranty is 10 YEARS because once we resurface your pool it is NOT coming off since we use advanced pool prepping technology that creates a high strength bond. Most of our jobs are from past customer and referrals from friends, neighbors and family-they like us enough to come back. We do a really good job & we have since 1981. We DO NOT clean pools, nor do we REPAIR Portable Hot Tubs. Call us to discuss your project.

It went great! Every day I had an e-mail on what was happening that day or the next. What to expect, who was going to show up and what time. If the workers were going to be late, I was contacted immediately. They asked for money as the services were provided, per contract. We had one minor problem that added a little bit of money. It was handled very well and professional. When ever I called, I immediately had a return call and a visit from the superintendn of the job! We had three bids and they were the highest. It was well worth it. You get what you pay for, is my motto! Great job and we are very happy

We were not impressed with the company we used 8 years ago, so we contacted several pool companies to remodel the pool. Many of the pool companies we interviewed either never showed up for the appointments or didn't follow through with the quotes. Alan Smith pools were extremely professional from beginning to end. They were super responsive, pro-active and did everything they said they would do it on schedule. We are very pleased with the end result and highly recommend them.

The job was the best contracting experience my wife and I have experienced in over forty years in the same house. The design was professional. Communication/scheduling was beyond expectation (way to go office and crew). The demo was neat and clean. The detail on the tile installation was amazing (remember: I've seen hundreds of installations). The pebble finish is absolutely gorgeous! My wife is super pleased and so am I.
Description of Work: As a swimming pool service technician for thirty years, I've seen hundreds of pool plaster and remodeling jobs. I have seen the best and the worst. Because of the consistently superior quality of the work done by Alan Smith Pool Plastering, they are the only company I refer my clients to and the only company I will ever use on my own personal pool. They replaced the tile and plaster on my pool this month.

Contractors showed up on time, worked well and were well supervised by Alan Smith personnel. Both contractors and Alan-Smith personnel were polite and explained what and why as they worked to finish the job on time. Alan-Smith personnel followed up to see that all the work was done correctly. Old friends think it looks like a new and better pool and new friends think we just put a poolin.

We recently had our pool replastered by Alan Smith pools and it was a very good experience. We had three other pool companies give us quotes, We decided to go with Alan Smith because the price was fair and the sales experience was much better then the other two companies, George was fantastic to deal with. They started the work 07/02/15 and completed it 07/13/15 We have pavers around the pool and in front of the house they were real careful not to get any thing on the pavers and when they left the property it was the same as it was before they came except I have a new pool and it looks fantastic today. Thank you Alan Smith.

pool service Thank you for the feedback. We love it when we get to work with a past customer. As a company, we do not service pools. We ended doing a classic looking white plaster job to bring it back to original look we created in 1995. Although we have many newer pool finishes to choose from, many customers prefer the look and feel of a freshly coated white plaster pool. Thank you for having the confidence to use us again for your pool project! Respectfully, Jeffrey Smith Director of Residential Sales & Marketing Member Comments: We used them 20 years ago and decided to use them again. They are great!!! The price is right for the job!

The contract was quoted and defined at 7 weeks with a completion date of June 20th 2015. Today it is July 22nd and the pool is left incomplete. As an owner of several business, I understand 'setbacks.' But to have lack of response, 19 total days of inactivity on my project, tasks not met or followed up as stated by someone titled a Project Manager, and for management not to follow up with a customer as requested is beyond unacceptable. I am satisfied with the quality of the coping, decking, and plastering at this point. I am disappointed in the lack of professionalism for the amount of money I invested into this project. My first Project Manager was removed in week #1 for not returning calls, advising of status, etc. The 2nd one is even worse. He has not hit a date, followed up with a status, etc. I have had to repeatedly voice my frsutration and follow up like I am *&%^ Project Manager and Alan Smith is my customer. Three weeks ago I asked for management to return my call to discuss the poor service and did not receive a call back. I was only told that "Managers were in meetings." At this point, I am seeking another company to finish the job and pursuing legal actions and communications with BBB. Yelp will also reflect my feelings about this company's service and naming the individuals directly.

We are glad to you are happy with the quality. Your project turned out beautiful and is complete! While we acknowledge there were some setbacks during the project, the sign of a good contractor is that they are willing to own their mistakes and make them right. We have gone the extra mile since our inception in 1981 to resolve all problems when they arise which has led to thousands of happy customers and referrals. In construction, it is inevitable that issues will come up and our company has the resources, knowledge and financial backing to handle them when they arise. We had to investigate the problem and schedule the repair which was at no cost to the homeowner. Everything has been resolved and the customer did not seek an outside contractor. Thank you for your business and we are happy everything was complete with excellent craftsmanship.

The quality of the work was superb. The sales rep was great - helpful with making suggestions when I struggled. The owner even came out to provide input since he has 30 years of experience. The project manager was pleasant but I had to stay on top of him in order keep the project going. I had some issues with the heater after it was installed but they were right on it and got it resolved. While I wish the project had not been so costly, there were not unexpected cost over runs and I believe I got my money's worth.

They came out to give me the quote and took all the information and measurements and then went back to their office. It took a few days for them to prepare the finished quote but it was very detailed and complete. When I hired them I scheduled it to my schedule and then needed to postpone a few weeks, no problem. They had the work scheduled to start then had to postpone due to machine failure but told me it would be 2 days. The next day they showed up without calling to start. I called them and they said the equipment got repaired so they started. I wish they would have let me know but I wasn't going to postpone it any more. All the workers were very police and professional and it was a pleasure to have them in my yard. The tile crew was meticulous and did a great job. They finished on time and I am very happy with the results. The only complaint is that the supervisor didn't call me enough to let me know when they found problems or changes that needed to be made. He improved after I complained to him.
Description of Work: They did the demo on my fiberglass poo and jacuzzi and resurfaced it with plaster. Then repaired some of the plumbing and replaced the drains with the new split drains, replaced the tile and pool skimmer. Also had to rebuild the dam wall between the pool and jacuzzi.

I am very satisfied with the work done. Alan Smith had super professional initial consultation (Brett) and helped me throughout project on decisions to be made. Alan Smith laid out the work, price and work schedule and then kept to it. They warned me about things that could go wrong before it happened. Ok, they then did the work on schedule with really good workers. Whether it was pool tile, or plaster or the the demo it went down as scheduled. Overall, everything is working as promised and it looks great. I have had lots of work done on my house over last 10 years with many contractors and I rate these guys in the top 10% of all contractors I have worked with.

This company goes above and beyond call of duty. I needed to get to the tile store to select a new tile for the spa. I didn't have the time to get there so the owner of Alan Smith went for me. He took pictures of my spa, went to the tile store, selected a few tiles that were the best match he could find and dropped off the samples on my doorstep. His selections were great and we were able to move forward with the project. They were on time, professional, and got the job done when they said they would. Price was in the same ballpark as two other companies. I would highly recommend these guys.

Alan and each one of his crews from beginning to end was fantastic. My pool looks beautiful! No job runs perfectly and this one was no exception, however, the couple of times that I had concerns, Alan Smith and his colleagues listened and took care of the issues on the spot. They were easy to get a hold of at any given time to answer questions. The onsite crews were respectful, thorough, quick, clean, efficient in their use of time and respectful. No damage was done to my property or belongings and where there are stepping stones I feared might break with their equipment, they kindly covered with planks to protect them. The price that I was quoted was inline with other quotes I received and feel that I got a great job at a good price. I felt that I was dealt with fairly and honestly and would recommend Alan Smith and his company to anyone needing pool work. And, in fact, have already recommended to many neighbors . . . you go Alan Smith!

The Alan Smith Pool company resurfaced our pool with a pebble stone. The stone we were sold at the time included Abalone and various shells. Afterward, during contract signing we were told the Abalone was extra, by $1,000. The salesman was new, they said. The actual demolition only took a day but the workers kept emptying the waste into our plant beds. We had to replace a lot of greenery after it died. The pool is finished but there are white patches throughout the surface.

Resurface pool with "rock pebble plaster" We are sorry there was a miscommunication. Our proposal and contract states that abalone is extra. We let the customer know that it was $500 more to upgrade the pebble finish. We ended up doing the abalone at no charge for the miscommunication. Plants we also replaced at no extra charge to the customer. If there is a concern with the pebble finish, we are more than happy to come back out and inspect our work to see if there is anything we can do. Thank you for taking the time to write a review . We appreciate honest feedback since we are continually striving to improve as a company. Regarding the quality of the work, your project turned out beautiful, especially the tile and masonry work around your pool. Our standard communication process is to send an email to customers to alert them when crews are scheduled to arrive. If customers prefer phone calls, we call the day before to let them know the approximate time the crews will be arriving. Unfortunately, we had the wrong email address on file for a portion of your job which caused some miscommunication. Your project was also put on hold due to some major structural issues in your pool. We advised you to consult with a structural engineer to explore the best options to repair the extensive cracking in your pool. We would rather put a project on hold and repair the pool correctly than rush through a job. The structural engineer did take some time to get his report done which caused some unforeseen delays. Patrick, our plumbing and electrical manager, spent considerable time on this project on Saturdays and Sundays troubleshooting issues and coming up with solutions for the water slide, the air blower for the spa as well as programming the lights. We are fortunate to have dedicated employees who work to make our customers happy. Mike, our tile and masonry manager, has been installing pool tile and coping for 38 years. He applied his experience on this job to produce a beautiful final product. He also worked tirelessly on the weekends to make sure the project met his personal high standards. At the end of the job, Mr. and Mrs. [removed member name] stated that they were happy with his work!

I can't say enough good things about this company. It was very professional, from start to finish. The workers did their jobs promptly and efficiently. I was in communication with someone from the company at all stages of the work. I received phone calls, emails, or personal contact letting me know what to expect next. They are very knowledgeable and have been in business many years. I would recommend Alan Smith Pools to everyone and will use them again if I ever have the need.
Description of Work: I called for an estimate for renovating in-ground spa built in mid-1990s. Alan Smith came to my home to look at what the work would entail. He provided a very detailed, professional estimate, giving options for the least expensive and higher quality materials, depending on my budget. After getting other quotes, I knew I wanted to go with Alan's company. Other people just gave me a bottom line, with not much information about what would be done. I decided to use quartz plaster and to replace the pumps, heater, fittings, light, etc. They also installed a sconce for the waterfall. I had leaks which were also repaired. On June 2, they began work and it was totally completed on June 10.

Thank you for the review. This is how a typical job runs for us. The white quartz we installed is much more durable than standard white plaster. You can expect to get about twice the lifespan from the quartz vs a plaster finish. The new variable speed pump will save you a significant amount of money on your electric bill. Make sure you get the rebate from SCE. They are currently offering a $200 rebate on variable speed pumps. The new heater will be more efficient and use less gas than the old heater. Thank you for you business and the great review!

The GOOD, the NOT-SO-GOOD, the UGLY...here's how my project went. It was a very rocky and drawn out process, but in the end Alan Smith Pools came through for a reasonably acceptable conclusion. THE GOOD: There is much to like about Alan Smith Pools. 1. SECURITY: You get the security of a large pool contractor, who is solidly insured, bonded, licensed, and who handles all phases of the project in-house rather than subcontracting things like demolition to other contractors that may not be insured to the same level against mishaps. 2. COMMUNICATION: They generally communicate efficiently, sending a concise email notification from the main office the day before each crews is due to arrive. There were, however, some serious exceptions as noted below. 3. SATISFACTION GUARANTEE: They will persist to remedy any customer concerns until you are satisfied. 4. PRICE: Prices are pretty good. I obtained five quotes and they were right in the middle. 5. THE ALAN SMITH SHOWROOM: They have an excellent showroom where you can see all their offerings in "real life" rather than relying on photo catalogs. This makes a huge difference when choosing tile and finish. 6. PEOPLE: All Alan Smith personnel that I interacted with were very polished, professional (with some exceptions on the communication front as noted below), and pleasant. 7. DOCUMENTATION: They provide a comprehensive contract. Be sure to read and understand every word. It protects both you and Alan Smith Pools. 8. CLEANUP & CARE FOR YOUR PROPERTY: They do a very good job of cleaning up after themselves and minimizing impact on your home and yard. THE NOT-SO-GOOD: Some things should have and could have been MUCH better. 1. ADHERENCE TO SCHEDULE: At the time I signed the contract I was told my pool would be down for 2-3 weeks. As things turned out, all I had at three weeks was a big, ugly hole in the ground as nothing but the demolition had been completed. My pool was initially drained 5/12/2014 and the final water conditioning was completed yesterday (7/19/2014), so my 2-3 week project took 8-10 week to complete, depending on how you define "completed". My pool was first swimmable again on 6/23, but quality issues ultimately meant re-draining it. 2. QUALITY: When the pool was initially completed, there were large sections of waterline-tile grout covered in blue plaster up to the middle of the tile, large chunks of blue plaster on the surface of many tiles, and the plaster finish was totally unacceptable (e.g., About 5% of the pool looked like the Color Sparkle Quartz finish I was sold and the balance looked like ordinary colored plaster). ASP's representatives suggested that everything was within "the norm". I did not agree and subsequently pushed them to "make it right". Ultimately, they re-drained the pool and acid washed it to produce the appropriate finish and to remove plaster from the tile and grout. They of course credited my final bill for re-draining the pool and performed the acid-wash at no charge. After the acid wash, about 80% of the pool's finish looked as it should. Unfortunately there still are many well defined boot prints from the plaster crew embedded in the bottom of my pool which did not come out with the acid washing (for some reason, the prints are highlighted in a significantly lighter color than the surrounding plaster, so they are highly visible). It's definately still not what I would consider "good", but it is "good enough" that I can now live with it. I probably should have pushed them to make it better, but at this point I'm just too worn down by the whole experience and don't want to think about it further. Ironically, I hired Alan Smith Pools specifically because I thought they, more so than the other contractors that quoted the project, would get it done in a hassle-free manner without having to be "managed" extensively. THE UGLY: 1. COMMUNICATION: Communication was excellent up through the demolition phase of the project. At that point, no amount of phone calls and emails over a two week period produced any answers as to when crews would return to finish he job. What promises I did obtain went unmet. After two weeks of getting the runaround I started posting my experience to Angie's List and "coincidentally" the next day communication from ASP intensified and there was a sudden and heightened commitment to get my project done. Communication was good for the balance of the project. This is a very good thing for you as you can be assured of at least one route to action with ASP if you happen to encounter similar issues (i.e., they care about their reputation and will work to protect it). With smaller contractors that may not even show up on Angie's List, you would not have this option. I should also note that ASP became extremely busy right during the time when my project was due to begin. This is not a legitimate excuse for poor communication and breaking promises, but, based on my other interactions with them, I believe under more typical circumstances you probably would not encounter the severity of issues that I experienced. SUMMARY: I suspect Alan Smith Pools is generally a much better contractor than my experience would suggest. Communication is generally good, but can be extraordinarily bad at times when they are very busy. To their credit, they care about their reputation and will work hard to make sure you are satisfied. Aside from communication, the biggest issue is that quality was initially a solid 'F' and was considered acceptable by ASP until I pushed them. In the end they remedied the situation to a minimally acceptable level, but overall it was not the experience I expected when hiring Alan Smith Pools. Hopefully your experience will be better.

Thank you for the comprehensive and detailed review. Thank you for highlighting many of the qualities that we are known for including the fact we are C-53 licensed, bonded and insured including general liability and worker's compensation. We provide a 10 year warranty on all pool finishes and 5 year warranties on all tile and masonry work. We pride ourselves on our efficient email notification system that alerts homeowners when a crew will be arriving to perform work. Since most of our work comes from referrals, we are only as good as our last job which is why we persist until a homeowner is happy. Our showroom is very helpful for our customers to select products as you stated. Most of our employees have been with us for over 10 years and they understand the importance of communication with our customers. It was initially estimated that the project would take about 3 weeks. A project like this typically takes 2-3 weeks. Our demo and plaster crews were on schedule to do the work on time, but our 6 tiles crews were severely back logged. Unfortunately, this caused the project to go about 4 weeks from start to time of plastering. Besides the plaster that got onto the tile, the quality was well within industry standards. The plaster on the tile was not normal and we came back and corrected that. Colored quartz and colored plaster products tend to be very mottled and blotchy in appearance which was outlined in the contract that this was a possibility. Regardless, we strive to exceed industry standards, so we drained and acid washed the quartz to bring out more of the blue sparkle. Thank you for choosing to contract with us. Although the project could have run a little smoother in some areas, we acknowledge our mistakes and work to makes things right.
