About us

There’s A Reason Over 35,000 Families Have Trusted Alan Smith Pool Plastering Since 1981 We Always Insist On Doing Every Job Exactly Right. *No cheap sub standard cements, aggregates or pigments in our pool finishes *No sub-contracted, unqualified & inexperienced plastering finishers(We only have an “A” team) *Every job is run by a team of experts and has a dedicated project manager. *No inflated pricing, all estimates come from a company price list. Quality work at a fair price. What a concept! Yes you have dozens-maybe even hundreds of options- for resurfacing and remodeling your pool. And the question we get all the time is “why should we go with Alan Smith Pool Plastering?” To be up front with you, we’re not the cheapest contractor. We’re also not the fastest. If you are looking for fast and cheap, head down to the Home Depot or Lowe’s or call around to some of our competitors. That being said, our work is not exclusively for the rich and famous either. In fact, our typical customer has a 15,000 gallon pool, makes between $75,000-$100,000 in household income, and spends between $5,000-$15,000 with us on their pool and spa renovation.(yes several choose to upgrade and remodel their entire backyard with pavers, patio covers, masonry and outdoor lighting) In other words, we cater to people who can afford to do the job right the first time. People who want the job to outlast their lifetime, and we don’t want to save a few dollars by using cheap materials and labor instead of quality products and an experienced work force. Here’s what your really need to know. Our pool surface warranty is 10 YEARS because once we resurface your pool it is NOT coming off since we use advanced pool prepping technology that creates a high strength bond. Most of our jobs are from past customer and referrals from friends, neighbors and family-they like us enough to come back. We do a really good job-and we have since 1981. We DO NOT clean pools. Call us to discuss your project.

We were able to some nice modifications on this pool. We ended up building a baja shelf in the pool entry, extended the steps in the spa, and raised a bench in the deep end. We saved you some money by repairing the loose coping instead of replacing it. The "Blue Diamond- Sanstone" finish is our mini pebble we install. A picture can be seen here. gemstonepools.com/palette_gemstonesandstone.html We are glad your project turned out well. We apologize if there was a lack of communication. We are always striving to improve as a company and we have taken steps to ensure our customers receive the communication they require.

We needed things done right away and they were able to accomodate us with their services. We could find nobody else to come do the services. They did an excellent job! I'd highly recommend them.
Description of Work: They repair the coping and put in new drain covers. They also did work on our deck. I can't remember how much we spent at this time.

We are glad we were able to solve your pool issues. We ended up using a diver to install to two new drain covers. We were also able to save your old coping and save you some money by resetting it instead of replacing it. Thank you for the business! LOOSE COPING □ RESET LOOSE STONE COPING – APPROX. 10 LIN. FT.

It should be said that Alan Smith Pools did not complete any work at our house, so I am not commenting on the quality of their re-plastering. I am, however, commenting on their professionalism and expertise (or considerable lack thereof) leading up to a job. In fact, the unprofessionalism and apparent ignorance of Los Angeles Building & Safety Code coupled with a hard and fast sell to sign a contract was enough for me to cease contact with them and go with another outfit. The estimate for the re-plastering job was reasonable, but what I didn't like was that the guy giving me the estimate was a salesman clearly working on commission and not the guy doing the actual job. He was completely ignorant of LA code, which requires a permit for re-plastering a pool. I have an email from our salesman that explicitly says "you do not need a permit." Well, he is dead wrong. And it is pretty alarming that a pool company would not know such a basic rule. If they don't follow the laws--or aren't even aware of them--why would I want to hire this company? I was also put off by the flurry of emails pressuring me to sign a contract now in order to lock in a certain price. It was a hard sell, and frankly, one that felt a bit sales-y. It felt to me they were more interested in getting the contract signed, the down payment down then the quality and professionalism of their work.

Response from Alan Smith Pool Plastering & Remodeling
We do not believe that the members description of our efforts are accurate and fair. Our Designer met with the member's wife on a fairly straight forward project for remodeling their swimming pool. After following up by phone, our company was running a promotional program for the month, which our Designer offered to the customer. The customer liked the incentive and agreed to sign. When the contract was sent to the member; they took issue with a clause in the contract that states if a city should require a permit on a project that we are unaware of, we ask the customer to pay the cost of the permit and a processing fee to cover a member of our staff creating any required drawings, completing the appropriate forms, and filing the request at the city Building Department. Our Designer explained to the customer that the requirements are changing regularly without notice at many of the cities as they battle budget issues, and that keeping track of these changes with all the individual cities located in Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside and San Bernardino counties on a daily basis is next to impossible. The customer was unhappy with this clause and our Designer's response. Our Designer politely accepted her unwillingness to sign the contract. While we acknowledge a potential customer's desire not to sign a contract if they do not like the wording of a clause in the document, it does not seem fair to mischaracterize the exchange between the two parties, especially when we never actually met with the member himself.

Called for estimate to replaster and repair pool. They showed up on time and said it would take a few days for an estimate. After a week, we called back, left messages. After 10 days, got a call to say that they're not sure why we hadn't received it yet, but that it would coming. 14 days later, finally got an estimate after 3 follow up phone calls. The estimate was much more than others. Not impressed with their customer service at all. If it takes 3 phone calls and over 2 weeks just to get an estimate, I can't imagine what a big project would take.

We are sorry that you are disappointed in the time it took to get an estimate for your project. It was apparently due to an incorrect e-mail address. Alan Smith Pools takes all of it sales opportunities with customers very seriously. In this situation, our Designer showed up to the appointment as scheduled and took the appropriate information and measurements. Our Designer then prepared the project estimate the same day and e-mailed it using what he thought was the correct address. When you called a week later stating that you had not received the Estimate yet, our Designer e-mailed the estimate again. You called into the office the same day and stated that you still had not received the Estimate. That is when it was discovered that the wrong e-mail address had been used originally by our sales staff. The Estimate was then e-mailed by our office using the correct e-mail address. Even with the incorrect e-mail address, the estimate was still e-mailed to the correct address by the eighth day, not 14 days later. We are sorry that you were disappointed by these circumstances.

We had some issues with the pool, with the curing of the cement. One thing that is important to me is communication and I was not happy with their lack of communication. They said that a certain person would be a project manager and then you would speak with this person for a certain part of the pool and then another person for another part of the pool. There was really no coordination, like the right hand did not know what the left hand was doing. I have a policy that if someone is going to be at my home working, that either myself or my husband would need to be home and we made that very clear in the beginning. I had sent them an email stating my husband and I would be out of town for a certain period and there was to be no work done at that time. And they came and were on the property and worked on the pool anyway. The have double billed me for things that I didn't have or use. They billed me for tile and deliver of tile and they didn't deliver any tile, I purchased the tile and I went and picked it up. After I brought it to their attention they were good about correcting it. But there were several things that they double billed me for. Unfortunately due to illness with myself and my husband, we were not able to stay on top of things until just recently. They came out and drained the pool and sanded it and re-surfaced it and we are just now putting the pool back together. The bottom line is I would not recommend them or use them again. The project manager should have been out here supervising and should have been on top of things and there was no project manager. A project as large as this deserves a project manager that knows what is going on. The owner called me after I sent an email about his people being on the property when we were out of town. He only talked about how successful his business is and how long he has been in business. The point is, they came out and were on my property when I had asked them not to come out while we were away. Also, I have had to drain the pool twice and the water here is expensive.

I located Alan Smith Pools through Angie's list. I also got a bid from another contractor, recommended by my pool guy, that was a little cheaper but I had a higher level of trust with Alan Smith Pools after my first meeting with the salesman, Neil Spain. The salesman was very knowledgable and did a very compolete and detailed estimate. He went through all of the steps and what to expect. The project went exactly as discussed with us. They called and e-mailed to let us know when the next crew would be on site. They have special crews for each step. One crew came and removed all of the plaster and tile and removed the coping that needed to be reset in one day. The remodeling and tile crew came next and their work was done in three days. Next the plastering crew came out and did the pebble finish in a day. The next crew cleaned off the surface material and acid washed the pool and refilled it. Then they cleaned and serviced it for a week to get the chemical levels balance. From demo to pebble finish was 11 days. From deposit to water in the pool was 20 days. These guys are fantastic. Very professional. Communicated a lot about what they were doing, when the next crew would be out, etc. They even coordinated the service back to our normal pool guy. I highly recommend them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you [member name removed] for the kind words. We hope you are enjoying your "Blue Diamond Sandstone Pebble" Finish in your pool. The "Sandstone Pebble" is our mini pebble. Fortunately we are able to offer the mini pebble at the same price as our regular pebble. This was a job where we were able to save your old coping by resetting it instead of replacing it. The new Master Tile we put in went well with "Light Smoke" grout you chose. The Grey deck mastic complemented your coping very well. Thank you once again for your comments!

It didn't. I cancelled the visit.
Description of Work: I went with Alan Smith because Leslie Pool Supply, a local pool supply store, recommended them. This was a mistake. I called them the week before last and spoke with a woman from their office to see if I can have someone come out and give me a quote on my pump. She scheduled the visit for Saturday, 12/29/12. I left instructions for Neil to call me before heading out because I was told that he would arrive during a 2 hour window. That way I could meet him at the property and not waste any time. Neil never called, and he never showed up. Didn't even leave me a message or text. So that was that. A few days later, I received an email from Simon Goodman as to whether I still wanted them to come out. I communicated what happened with Neil and that I was disappointed with his company's customer service, however I'd give them another chance since they came recommended by my local pool supply company. I made an appointment for Saturday, 1/4/13 (today), and Simon said he'd be at my place between noon and 2pm. I called at 12:30 on 1/4/13 to make sure we were still on for today. He said he'd call me back! I then get a text that he'd come at 2pm. By 2:20pm, Simon had neither shown up, called, or texted. I called back and he didn't pick up. I wasted several hours waiting around for these guys to show up and nothing! Left a message and told him to forget about it. Seriously! Do I have to beg for service? Is it too much to expect for good customer service? How about just the common decency to call and to keep a potential customer updated? This company has failed from a customer service perspective on so many levels. Don't use Alan Smith!

We are sorry that you did not have a satisfactory experience with our sales staff. The original appointment that was scheduled conflicted with our Estimators existing schedule with a previously scheduled customer. When the conflict in the schedule was identified by our Estimator, he contacted our office to reschedule. You were unhappy with the appointment having to be rescheduled. In an effort to expedite the new appointment, it was assigned to a different Designer. Unfortunately, the new Designer’s appointment with a customer ran longer than expected. When our Designer called to notify you that he was still meeting with another customer and was running late, you were unhappy and did not want to wait or reschedule, and then canceled the appointment. When our Designers are meeting with a customer, we attempt to be very respectful of their time, and avoid leaving a customer meeting unfinished. That occasionally requires them to call the appointment immediately following notifying them that we will be later than expected. Normally our Estimators have a flexible window of time of an hour or two in case a previous appointment runs long. That was not the case in this situation. We found out after the fact that this project was related to the repair of a pool pump, work our company does not even perform.

Neil Spain came over to my house, I discussed what I wanted to do. Mr.Spain then told me what he would like to do to the backyard. He said to call him back at a later time to get an estimate. Why do I need to call him again to get the estimate? Did he think I wasn't serious? Ended up not getting an estimate. My friend had similar experience with this company. He had to call Mr.Spain to get the estimate after it was promised to him days before. This seems to be a hit or miss company.

Response from Alan Smith Pool Plastering & Remodeling
It is unfortunate that the member would characterize our meeting with him in this manner. When we met with with the member regarding his plans for his backyard, we listened and put together a rough budget for the type of project he described. When we presented the rough numbers to him he laughed and stated that this budget was way out of his financial constraints. Our Designer then discussed several options that were more in line with the budget he presented. None of these options were satisfactory to the member. Regardless, he was very interested in our providing him a free drawing of the project he originally described, which we had determined was not possible with his current financial constraints. While we do not mind putting together conceptual drawings for customers on their project, it is with the caveat that the projects we are preparing drawings for within a customer’s budget parameters. Our Designer did politely indicate that we would be happy to meet with him again to discuss his project when either his budget constraints would provide for the project described, or when he had revised his current desires to fall within his budget requirements. We do not feel that the characterization of this meeting was fair.

Description of Work: Our Pool was installed 39 years ago and was in need of a facelift. Contractor was very professional, repaired a leak in the water line, removed old coping and old plaster. Installed new tiles and coping and replastered the inside of the pool. Also paid a lot of attention to making sure the water reached it proper PH Balance. I would use them again, I feel they were very trustworthy.

I contacted Alan Smith Pools to solicit a proposal for a complete backyard remodel project as indicated above. They responded promptly to the solicitation and scheduled a time for Gary Kawate to do a site visit and review the design plan I had prepared. Gary was prompt and professional, although it took them a bit more time than the others to provide the completed proposal. Their proposed price for the project was substantially higher than any of the other four quotes received. The proposal included detailed pricing for each activity, which was very helpful but their price was just way too high.
Description of Work: Received a quote for backyard remodel project including: demo, lanscape, hardscape, concrete work, outdoor kitchen with roof, lighting, irrigation, complete pool remodel/replumb with custom water feature and wrought iron gates.

Had to follow up to get the estimate. When it arrived the majority of line items were rolled into a grand total. We asked for a breakdown of each cost items. The response was that they really could not bid the retaining wall or pavers because their cost would be too high and their company wasn't really equipped to do that work. After all that the only work they bid was the pool replaster.

The field superintendent did not inform me when the job would start, I came home from work and found their crew was here sand blasting, many of my plants were damaged in the process. Throughout the job there was little or no communication as to when they would be here. The final plastering job is very nice however their customer skills are negligible. The hardscape was subbed out to Sun Deck which was a great company to work with. The equipment installation was haphazard as they did not install the pump I requested and told me the one they installed was good enough, they also installed the wrong pool light and when they finally installed the correct light it failed within a year and they were no help in getting it replaced. I talked the superintendent about the pump and light and they never responded. J bought the correct pump and replaced it and the system now works great

The contracting went okay. The company came recommended to me by my pool service. Initially, the salesman came promptly and was knowledgable and professional. The price was higher than other bids I received but they did lower the price a bit when I called them to discuss which I appreciated. However, I had to follow up on the salesman to learn whether his boss was willing to lower the price and then later after i agreed to go with them, i had to make a follow up call to get the contract signed. My pool guy and the ratings on Angie's list said i am getting a good company so i went with them even though they told me it would take three weeks before they could start. I paid an $800 deposit. Update 5/23/2011 - After a minor misunderstanding about the start date, they started today by draining the pool. Will provide further updates.

They came out promptly to review the vinyl-lined in ground pool for a remodel, but then weeks went by with no estimate. When I called the estimator, he said he had told my husband that this would be a total rebuild and that he wasn't giving an estimate. I thought maybe there had been a misunderstanding, so I told him that we were still interested in that estimate for the rebuild. He said he would get one to us within a week, but no estimate ever arrived. It's unfortunately that this guy was a flake. It's probably not reflective of the entire company.
Description of Work: We were disappointed in the responsiveness of the estimator.

Response from Alan Smith Pool Plastering & Remodeling
Dear Member, Thank you for your critique of our estimator. As a business owner, it is always valuable to get input from customers as to my employees performance. Although our estimator was very knowledgeable and a nice guy, he did lack follow through skills. Steve is no longer with our company. We would love earn your business, you are right in your assumption that this doesn't rep our company as a whole. With over 18,000 pool renovations and just as many satisfied customers under our belt, we would like to keep it this way. If I could ever assist you in your pool projects in the future, please call my office and ask for me personally.
