They got right to it as soon as they arrived. The fitting was under a block wall between two planters next to the garage. I had done some preliminary digging and explained to them why I was confident that I had nearly pinpointed the area that was the source of the leak. The work was simple once the faulty fitting was exposed after an hour or so of digging. No estimate was given before the start of work. I felt that $750 for labor was too high. The plumber said that they needed to wait for 1 hour for the glue on the fitting to set/dry/cure. I understand the necessity of this but I don't feel it's fair to charge the full labor price of $150/hr for and extra hour for the two guys to stand around waiting for glue to dry. Also the price charged for materials was exorbitant. $62.00 for a length of PVC pipe and 2 fittings. $8.25 for a 1" PVC coupling? ($1.50 at HD) $16.00 for a 1" copper coupling?!!!! ($3.00 at Lowes) Here's the kicker, $25 for miscellaneous materials (glue, primer, solder) An 8oz can of primer plus an 8oz can of PVC cement together costs $9.00 at retail. That's enough for gluing 50 fittings. A 1oz pkg of copper pipe solder is $7.00, probably enough for 10 fittings. You know that the plumber is not buying it in 1oz coils, but probably in a 16 ounce roll, enough for 150-200 fittings for around $20-$25 (probably less at wholesale)
Description of Work: Fixed broken fitting on main water line coming from the street.
