Everything went very well. Maintenance man was very prompt, fast and seemed efficient and was friendly. Did not try to sell me anything I didn't need and answered all my questions
Description of Work: Performed maintenance on split system heat pump. Changed filter and checked condition and operation of all components. The question, "approximate cost of service was confusing to me." I didn't know if you meant, what did I pay for the special or if there were additional charges. Since you should already have the information as to what I paid for this special I answered 0 because there was no additional charge.

The technician arrived on time, was extremely professional and very patient taking time to answer my questions regarding what I should be doing as a homeowner to maintain my system. He started by sticking his head in the opening of my attic to look at the ducts & assessed what could/should be replaced. Then he inspected my AC unit, assessed its age and "state", opened the electrical panel to review the wiring, checked the refrigerant/flow and explained the basics of maintenance. We ended up going inside to look at the air filter and while their he conducted a similar inspection on my furnace. While my AC was running he used a surface thermometer to read temps at several of my registers. He took the time to explain how to clean my coil with a hose from the outside of the condenser and to take care not to use too high pressure. In the end he made suggestions feel genuine and not like some high pressure sales tactic. I had a very positive experience and when he left I was happy to leave an A+ assessment on Angies list; however, when I reviewed what was supposed to be included in the "$39 for a Spring Air-Conditioning Tune-Up" that I paid for I realized I didn't do a good job in holding him responsible for executing everything in the package. $39 for a 20-point Spring air-conditioning tune-up Calibrating and leveling thermostat <- Didn't need doing I guess Cleaning filters as needed <-- COMPLETE Lubricating and inspecting bearings for wear <-- didn't happen (maybe it didn't need to?) Cleaning indoor coil (if accessible) <-- don't think it was accessible Flushing and treating condensate drain with anti-algae product <-- didn't happen Inspecting condenser coil <-- didn't get opened to look at Monitoring operating pressures of refrigerant <-- COMPLETE Inspecting safety devices for proper operation <-- COMPLETE Inspecting disconnect box for proper rating and installation <-- COMPLETE Monitoring volts and amps on fan motor <-- Not sure Tightening all electrical connections <-- COMPLETE Inspecting and testing contactor for burns and/or pits <-- INSPECTED Inspecting electrical for exposed wiring <-- COMPLETE Inspecting and testing capacitors <-- INSPECTED Inspecting fan blades <-- COMPLETE Cleaning condenser coil and removing debris <-- Didn't happen Inspecting service valves for proper operation <-- COMPLETE Measuring temperature difference between supply and return <-- COMPLETE Inspecting duct work for energy loss <-- wasn't thorough Monitoring compressor for proper amp draw, volt draw, and wiring connections <-- Not sure Reviewing the list after he left I wish I would've insisted a better assessment of the ducting in my attic & that they cleaned the AC condenser coil. I don't think there was any willful negligence on the techs part to get out of work, and ultimately I think I paid a fair price for what was completed. Even though Excel Air missed a few things from the package I would use the company again and would even recommend them to friends with the caveat to make sure you know what services are to be rendered before they arrive (and not after like I did).

The inspection was performed and a report on the system that everything was functioning OK. I was also given an estimate for the recommended work. The estimates for the work included two price options: A lower price for each item if I had the work done while the technician was here and a higher price if the technician had to return at a later time. I am immediately put on guard when I have a "Today only price" and a higher price at a later date. There were three recommendations: Replace "Contactor" $280 today or $360 at a later date Install locking caps $75 today or $125 at a later date Install safety switch secondary drain pan $220 today or $270 at a later date IF I ACTED THAT DAY I COULD SAVE $180. I chose not to have the service done. I then contacted Metropolitan Heating and Air Conditioning. The came out recommended the locking caps and safety switch and did them for $88 and $196 respectively. Their total price for the two items was $284 compared to $295 if I had had the work done the day Excel originally did the inspection. Including the inspection the cost from Excel was the total for those two items would have been $344. The most expensive item was the replacement of the "Contactor" for $280/360. The representative of Metropolitan at my request checked this part. He said there was no build up "something" (I can't recall what) that might warrant a replacement but since it was working fine and there was no noticeable problem he recommended against the work. As someone who is not sophisticated in mechanical matters I rely on professionals to make recommendations. I now believe that the "Contactor" replacement was not necessary at all and I find the "incentive" to have the work done TODAY constitutes unwarranted pressure to agree to a repair that was not needed. Clearly the difference in the price on the two items repaired was close - except for the $49 inspection. I have copies of the quotes and work orders and if the system permits will attach them to this review. Basically I would not use Excel Air Corporation in the future because they have lost my trust. I wonder how others who took advantage of this special "deal" faired? I look forward to seeing Excel's response.

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback on our services. The only way for us to improve is to know what our customers really feel about our service. Although I enjoy the abundance of “A/B” ratings we normally get, lower ratings are what show me we need improvement. I have read through your comments and the invoice our technician left you on the day of service. The invoice we left shows that our technician spent a little over an hour on site doing the maintenance. I also confirmed that time with GPS tracking we have on all of our trucks. From what I am reading, and based on his time there, he did a very thorough inspection of your equipment. He checked all of the pressures, voltages, and amperage's on the different components of your system. His conclusion was that your 18 year old Carrier A/C Condensing Unit (manufactured in 1996) was operating “normally at this time.” Your Goodman Furnace was in very good shape, since it is only 2 years old (manufactured in 2012). Age of equipment was verified by their Serial Numbers. After the inspection, our Technician gave you pricing for “recommended” repairs/upgrade. He gave you two prices for each of the items he was recommending. One was the price for work done at time of service and the other was what it would cost if we had to come back at a later date to do the same thing. I am so sorry you took this as “pressure” to buy that day. In my 25 years in this industry, I have not seen a company that does not do this. It costs a company money to get a Technician to your door. Unfortunately we do have to cover that cost. If we can do work the same day we are at your house for one service, it costs us less to provide additional services while we are there. We pass that savings on to you with a lower price, if done the same day. Sorry, it’s the right thing to do. As for the recommendations. I see, from your comments and copies of invoices, that the price was basically the same between our company and the other company you had come out behind us. The issue appears to be with the recommendation to replace an 18 year old contactor. Our Technician said to replace it, the other company said it did not need to be replaced. Granted, I have not seen this contactor, but I find it very hard to believe that an 18 year old contactor does not show “any” wear to justify its replacement. That A/C condensing unit life expectancy is only 20 years. I have been doing this a very long time, I just find it hard to believe that the part was in such good shape. What really bothers me about our recommendations (and the other companies) was the failure to recommend replacing that 18 year old condensing unit. That system uses refrigerant that will be obsolete in a few more years (R22). They stopped making R22 equipment 5 years ago. Also, that unit’s efficiency is only 9.3 SEER. Newer equipment is a minimum of 13 SEER (this minimum was raised to 14 SEER as of January 1, 2015). “SEER” is the efficiency rating of an A/C system. The bigger the number the more efficient the unit is. Replacing the unit would have saved you much more in future repairs and even more importantly energy savings. I am so sorry we failed to make that recommendation. To help answer your last question; “…how others fared with us”? We have an A+ rating with the BBB, and we currently have a “B” rating with Angie’s list, after several hundred reviews, which you can read for yourself. Our “A/B” ratings on Angie’s list make up over 85% of our total reviews, and most of those are “A” ratings. So, I would answer your question this way; almost all of our Angie’s list customers like the work we have done. I am so sorry for your impression of our recommendations. It is not, and was not, our intention to make you feel pressured to do any work. We were just trying to let you know our pricing to do work, either at time of inspection, or to come back at a later date for the same repairs. At our next Technician meeting I will be reviewing with my guys how to better present these options. I never want another customer to feel as you did. I hope my explanations of what was done eases your mind. Even more so, I hope you give us another chance to earn back your trust and business.

You are correct, we did not adjust your refrigerant level. I am sorry you do not feel that you received "A-rated" service because we did not find any major problems with your system and refrigerant was not required at the time of the maintenance. On 6/20/14 when we came out to do the maintenance, your systems refrigerant charge was to factory specifications. As noted on the invoice you signed that same day, the system was operating fine. It just needed minor adjustments, but not to refrigerant levels. The invoice stated all of the operating conditions of your system and showed that no refrigerant was needed. That was why we did not charge you for any refrigerant. You do not need to add refrigerant to your system every year. If you do it has a leak that must be fixed. It is very important to have your system checked every year. That way you can find small problems before they become big problems.

I hired them based on the Angie's list coupon do come and do an inspection and tune-up. We bought the house a few years ago, and the AC hadn't been running well. The condensate pump was running too often and for too long, etc. I fully expected the pay more than the coupon, because we knew the AC would need some work. The guys arrived promptly, clearly explained what they were doing and what needed to be done. The wrote out an estimate, which was much higher than I expected, but didn't seem totally ridiculous based on the amount of time they were spending on the system. They ended up replacing the condesnate pump, cleaining the coils, cleaning the condensor, adding an overflow shutoff to the condensate area, sprucing up the ductwork, and probably other stuff. The AC stopped blowing cold a few hours after they left. My wife called them and they said they'd send someone out the next day, but she insisted on someone coming that day. They did, and it ended up just being a wire-nut gone bad, a 2 minute fix. All in all, very happy with the service, other than the cost. But I wouldn't say the cost was ridiculous.

I purchased the Big Deal because I had a serious concern that our vent system was corrupted. He barely looked over the problem, but explained that it would be an expensive job. He also explained that it was his last week at Excel and he actually gave me his number claiming he could give me a better deal than Excel. I was suspicious so I called another provider to check out the issue. They were able to identify the issue. I guess the tech from Excel didn't know or lied to me about what was going on. I reached out to Excel and they did immediately send me a refund and sent me a formal apology letter. The management of Excel was great. They responded quickly to my issues. I feel that it was just a problem with the specific employee who came out and the fact that he was on his way out the door.

The person who made the call was polite, but wanted us to spend over $600 for parts that were functioning well. I paid $50 for the inspection with a coupon sold to me by Angies's List and $150 to Excellair for cleaning one area of the A/C unit. He spent seven minutes on this task. This is a ripoff of the first order. I will never call this company again. I am disappointed in Angie's List for advertising this company.

We apologize for you feeling that you were cheated in any way, and we wanted to hopefully clear up a few items described in your review of our services. Input like this is vital to our success, but I must clear up a few details; You mentioned that the technician spent only 7 minutes. After checking the GPS on our service truck I found that our technician was on site from 10:01am-11:35am, which is over 90 minutes. Granted, I realize that our technician was mostly speaking with your husband and you may not have been aware of all the time he actually spent on the Job. During that time he did the maintenance, removed dead lizards, and chemical cleaned your coils. During the Angie’s List Maintenance our technician found two dead lizards in your condensing unit’s high voltage controls, pictures are available upon request. His recommendation to replace the parts was due to the damage done to your contactor and capacitor, caused by the two dead lizards he found in your system. Yes, both parts were still “functioning” after removing the bodies of the lizards, but the contacts were badly burned and pitted. It would have been irresponsible of us not to recommend the replacement of these parts. I am very surprised these parts even worked after he removed the bodies. Normally they do not. Our technician took some extra time to try and cleanup these parts, the best he could, to keep them functional after the lizards were zapped by these parts. Burned and pitted contacts do not function “well”. They may be functioning, but not “well”. And can cause compressor failure. The actual price quoted you, after discounts, was $450 to replace those parts (see invoice #015237). The $150 that was charged to you was for a deep chemical cleaning of your 15 year old outdoor coils. This too was discounted $25 (normally $175) for Angie’s List Customer. I can’t stress enough how apologetic we are that our visit was such an unpleasant one for you, especially to receive an overall “F” grade as your review. It’s a top priority for each of us to best represent our company. We take pride in our top service and reputable presence in this community, with an average Angie’s List Review grade of “A”. If there is any opportunity to redeem ourselves, please let us know. Please remember it’s important to maintain your system every 6 months. Your system is 15 years old and the average life expectancy is about 20 years. We’d be more than happy to perform another inspection for you within that time frame at no cost to you, to make sure the parts damaged by the lizard are still in good shape.

Tech was late, I called the company to find out what approximate time he would be arriving. When I made the appointment, I did say that any time of day was fine, but had signed up the 10-12 slot. I never received any communication from them about the actual time they had assigned me. Once he arrived, he got right to work. He first did the yearly maintenance on the unit, then came in and told me there were two things he suggested I take care of due to the age of the unit. I agreed, since I've never had to replace anything in it for the 15 years it has been installed. He then went out and gave the coils and acid wash and replaced the 'contactor' as it was arcing when the unit turned on. He was very professional, choosing to use the outside gate instead of trapsing through my house to get to the condensor unit.
