DM Building was great! Very professional and Danny, the owner gave a fair price for the amount of work that we needed for our bathroom. The crew did great professional work and knew what they were doing. Our bathroom turned out great and we are very happy with it. Highly recommend!
Danny took on our project, which was to build a home on an oddly-shaped, canyon side lot. We hired him as he had experience building on hillsides as well as with working with our architect. Ours was a very difficult project; from Coastal Commission to City approval, as well as with structural engineering. Danny had a plan for how to access and install our caissons into the hillside from day one. Not only that, his crew and sub-contractors showed up everyday, on-time for our year and a 1/2 building period. We communicated nearly every day via text or phone calls; Danny and his supervisor Scott were always VERY responsive. They were also open to alternate ideas in order to cut down construction costs. We've now been in our new home one year, and can honestly say that we are very happy with the craftsmanship and quality of our home. Moreover, the few small issues that we have had (garage door opener; low water pressure), Danny has continued to be responsive and to send his team back out to assist us over this past year. Overall, DM Building is an honest and earnest group of builders who only want the best for your project. I highly recommend DM Building, and would be happy to discuss their work further with anyone who is looking for a custom home builder or looking to embark on a large remodel project. Description of Work: Danny and his team at DM Building built our entire custom home in coastal canyon lot from the ground-up.
All went well and the project was completed on schedule with quality craftsmanship. Throughout project there was adequate communication which was important because my children and I were still living in the house.
The work completed was of the highest quality. Danny, the owner of DM Building, is a fair and honest business owner, and very responsive. He has a very skilled group of people and they did a great job from start to finish. Our foreman, Scott, who treated the project like it was his own home, provided excellent guidance and help throughout the remodel. The attention to detail was impressive and suggestions were made along the way which made the house even better. Most of the workers are employees which helps in scheduling work. We did work with some contractors recommended and managed by DM Building for kitchen and laundry cabinets, as well as tiling and flooring--and they were professional and did excellent work. In my case, I had never done a remodel and my husband was the main contact in initiating the work. Unfortunately, he died when we were in the middle of the rebuild. Danny, Scott and his crew were very supportive and helped me through the remodel, over and above my expectations, accommodating additional changes and working with me to get everything completed. The house is beautiful.
Description of Work: Our main house was remodeled from the ground up for about 75% to 80% of the house.
The job went extremely welll Danny M is the most responsive contractor I’ve ever worked with and he deals with every concern raised or uncovered. He has had standards for both himself and his trades. He proactively uncover issues that do not meet his own high personal standards.
DM building provided excellent customer service from the very beginning...I was blown away because before we found DM Building we had several contractors in our home for various projects and when we found DM Building I was so relieved because they DO EVERYTHING, I never had to make another phone call for our entire remodel process; as a mother of four I can't tell you how much this meant to me!! It was all completed in a timely manner, they kept me informed of what is going on each day, they showed up on time and do amazing work, plus...their staff in always professional and polite! In fact we recommend them all the time! We had mold in one of our bathrooms when we moved into our home and they were here to remove it within 48 hours, re-did the entire bathroom and we had them back to do our downstairs bathroom and we hope to have then back soon for our master bath.

We live out of state & it was mandatory to have excellent communications w/our contractor. Danny & his team were incredibly professional, efficient, honest and dependable. We will not work with anyone else in the future. He did an exceptional job.
Description of Work: Complete remodel of duplex (3bed/2.5 bath each)
We hired DM Building to remodel our Kitchen/Great room and couldn't be happier with the process or the result. Danny and team were super professional, punctual and good at communicating where we were at in the process and what to expect. Although a lot of the team works directly for DM Building (which is nice!), the subs were also really great and their craftsmanship was excellent. It's always nerve-racking when you have to choose a contractor to work with, but rest-assured DM Building and team are great and you'll be happy working with them. We're about to add-on to our house and are planning to use the DM Building team to do that project as well.
Our remodel turned out absolutely incredible. Our friends and family give such wonderful compliments. DM was patient with my requests and changes of which there were many. Marshall, our project manager was on top of every detail. Both Danny and Marshall stated more than once that they wanted to make me happy. I am a perfectionist and wanted a perfect job. DM came through.
Description of Work: Remodel of first level of home
Excellent people to work with. The workers had high competence levels and very positive attitudes. The quality of the work was outstanding, and reminded me of my Dad's, who was an old-school homebuilder craftsmen; for example they hand applied an under coat and a hand finish to the wall plaster, instead of the now common spray finish - the difference is remarkable. There were minor problems with the tardiness of a few subs, but overall they worked hard to meet deadlines for an older house that held many surprises behind the walls. The finished home received many "wows" from visitors, particularly those who saw it before the remodeling. An appraiser for a refinance expressed similarly and gave it the highest rating she could for other than a new home.
Description of Work: Major modifications and updates to the interior of a sixty year-old home in Vista. this included moving some walls while taking remaining walls to essentially stud, replacing plumbing systems and sewer, upgrading electrical utilities and appliances, and laying new hardwood and tile floors. A significant amount of the effort involved correcting or replacing deficiencies provided by the self-help original owner; such as dangling bare 220v lines, structurally precarious ceiling and wall wood members and poorly jointed plumbing.

We purchased a 48-year old, one story house that needed a major update before we moved in. We did a lot of homework on creating an "Aging in Place" beach house for when we retire and DM Building basically re-built the entire house for our future needs and family's enjoyment. To say we took the original architect plans and kept adding new ideas would be an understatement! We more than doubled our original contract cost because we were enjoying the process way too much (plus Danny made it way too easy for us)! We added a laundry room, a new master bedroom, a master bathroom and a walk-in closet. Right outside the sliding glass door in the master bedroom are stairs going up to a huge deck with a panoramic view of the ocean and mountains. We have an indoor poolroom with beautiful LaCantina doors that slide open from the kitchen and family room making an eye-popping statement when you walk into the house. DM Building has their own electricians and plumbers as employees so you don't have to wait for outside contractors to make time for you. We have all new electrical wiring including IT wiring connected to a media closet for all the entertainment boxes, pool equipment, solar equipment, computers, modems, etc. keeping it all out of sight. They installed new plumbing lines and fixtures, electrical fixtures, ceiling fans, appliances, new windows, doors including beautiful, heavy pocket doors and new hardware throughout! They raised the ceilings and widened all the door openings. The drywall textures and painting are exceptional. The exterior is a beautiful suede-look stucco with the perfect accent of stone below Hardie Shingle Siding. There are so many things that DM Building does to make the job look seamless, in a timely step by step process. They installed a tankless water heater, a full house water filtration system, new heating and cooling systems, a new roof with a lighted cupola and new sidewalks and patios with new vinyl fencing surrounding the property. Solar was also installed and because of all the new energy efficient features that DM installed, we are already seeing the meter going backwards! DM employees made the construction process much easier to deal with the stress. We lived close enough to come over every day to see the progress so we bonded with a great bunch of guys, Danny, the owner, is great to work with and only a phone call away and if you're lucky enough to have Scott as your job supervisor, you will truly enjoy working with him. It was a long year but there is no comparison to the old house we bought and the lovely home we now live in, thanks to DM Building!

Danny, the DM Building crew, and his selected subcontractors did an excellent job on this project. Everyone was very friendly and professional, always over communicating and walking through all of the construction issues. I am very detail oriented and professional myself and DM Building more than exceeded my expectations. Even though I was completely happy, there were two issues that Danny himself wanted to do better and returned to make it nearly perfect. Absolutely stellar performance by DM Building.
Description of Work: DM Building (Danny) converted an open space loft on our second floor condominium into a complete, conventional bedroom for my soon-to-be-born daughter. Danny also removed our single bowl vanity and installed a double bowl vanity, granite counter tops, sinks, faucets, and miscellaneous improvements. Both the loft conversion and bathroom remodel work included planning, consulting, framing, electrical, drywall, texture, two ceiling fan installations, light switch replacements, and a few other odds and ends here and there as the project moved forward.
Danny and his crew are professional, responsive, and true craftsman. They did a beautiful job on our remodel.
Description of Work: DM Building Inc. was hired to completely remodel the 2nd floor of our home, (raised ceiling height, new roof line, new kitchen, great room, wet bar, deck, master bedroom, master bath, walk-in closet, balcony.

It went very well. Everything was done in less than a year. I had zero complaints. The reason I chose Daniel was, it was obvious he, unlike the other contractor companies I spoke with, was not a sales person and genuinely wanted the best possible for what I could afford. When I am able to remodel my kitchen, Daniel Montijo will be the first person I call.
Description of Work: Replaced all 50 year old, under slab drainage. 2.5 bathrooms, kitchen and laundry. Replaced all fixtures and shower/tub in both bathrooms, added tile. Paint, exterior and interior. Detail moulding and tile added to fireplace and patio room. Punched out wall and added mahogany door with sidelights making the back bedroom into a patio bedroom. Hired flooring and carpet 3rd party.
It went fantastic. The Project Manager, Sam, was fantastic and very responsive at every step of the project. He and the team at DM were easy to work with, very trustworthy, and willing to have every item that was done completed to my satisfaction. I would definitely hire them again, and recommend them to anybody needing a contractor to help with any type of home project.
Description of Work: Kitchen was flooded with black mold. Kitchen was finished remediation, and then needed to be rebuilt from ground up.

Project took considerably longer then expected due to weather, architectural, permit and drilling delays. DM Building worked with us throughout the project to minimize the issues. Danny's sub contractors were all well qualified. His crew were wonderful to work with. We lived in the house through the entire process and they worked around our schedules to accommodate this. Delays occurred with drilling caissons for the deck. Danny kept the additional cost to a minimum and coordinated all the extra work that needed to be done. While the project was over budget this was not the contractors fault. Most of the overages had to do with the scope of work, and problems encountered after walls were exposed and new issues revealed. Danny was a great problem solver and did not avoid talking to us at any point during the process. He was extremely responsive and understanding of all that was involved. If I had it to do all over again - I would hire DM building in a heartbeat. If we ever have any other remodel needs I will call them first.

The project took longer than we would have liked, but that was in part because we redesigned the deck and had to resubmit plans. Dan and his crew were very professional, had good suggestions to help us save some money and were a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: They built a 17 by 28 foot deck with Trex decking and wire railings, the deck was over a driveway and needed to be attached to the house. Project included, electrical, carpentry, constructing a metal frame, painting. Installed a patio door to access the deck.

Reached out via Angie's list and got a response that they could quote but work would be 4-5 months out, I said that was ok. He asked if I had plans, I said yes, and asked when they could come out to estimate. He asked me to email them but didn't tell when they could come out. I emailed the plans, stated that they may need modifications and may have updated plans shortly, but they were certainly ok for quoting, and asked again when they could come out. He said send me updates when you have them, and again ignored my question of coming out to estimate. Send an email asking again when can you come out, got ignored. Sent the updated plans, asked if he was still interested. He stated he'd review and get back to me the following week, but never heard back. Have to save it was very unprofessional, poor customer service, and if you advertise that you provide free estimates then do it.

DM Building is a great, fair, professional, and reliable company. We had a big project, and Dany's team was awesome, kept the project on time, and did top quality, reliable work throughout. They also allowed us to work with them on certain items, and were also very honest throughout the project on multiple aspects. DM Building crew exceeded our expectations in terms of reliability and accountability. The quality of the build is fantastic and overall they did an amazing job on our house. Hire these guys if you want honest and "piece of mind" quality professional work done on you property. We'd recommend them in a heart beat, as it's rare that you find a contractor like this...
Description of Work: House remodel for an approximate 1,500SF addition, including kitchen remodel.
I wanted to finish my attic so it could be used for storage. DM Building has done a couple of projects for me before, so I called them to discuss this. It was a fairly complex project with various design problems, but I was able to rely on Danny Montijo to provide sound advice and found him to be very knowledgeable when it comes to finding good solutions. He worked with the architect and subcontractors to find the best way build the storage space I wanted. The crew that did the bulk of the work did great work, is reliable and friendly, and was careful to clean up the site at the end of the day. One of the most valuable talents of a general contractor is knowing who the good tradesmen are and I was pleased with all the subcontractors that DM Building brought into the project. The project proceeded smoothly. There were no interruptions except when waiting for materials to arrive. Otherwise, there was someone here every day and Danny visited frequently to ensure the job was progressing satisfactorily. In addition, he was readily available by phone or text when not on the job site. In a project like this there are many small design decisions that have to be made along the way, but I knew if I wasn't available I could count on Danny or his crew choosing a good option instead of the easy one. There are always snags of course, but I always felt I could discuss the problems openly and work together toward a productive solution. The result is a storage space that I'm pleased with and would not have happened without the skilled and dedicated workmanship of DM Building.

Excellent. Most of the work was done by the DM crew. I think the framing ans drywall were subcontracted. The crew cleaned up at the end of each day, they were personable and respectable. Danny was responsive to all comments and questions and regularly showed up to check on progress. .I have known Danny for a number of years. We worked together in the construction industry. He is a hard working motivated contractor, understands the business well and keeps up to date on new codes and technology. I recommend him frequently to friends and former clients. He is honest and reliable. He won't up sell a job and will not take a job if the time frame is unrealistic.
Description of Work: Remodeled community clubhouse bathrooms, including plans and permit. Bathrooms were enlarged to make them ADA compliant and an additional bathroom was added for the pool area.
There were several challenges specific to this project. First, it is was our first remodel ever - so we were novice clients and needed a GC that could provide an extra level of guidance for us. Second, the project was done remotely - we lived 500 miles away and could only visit the project periodically, so we needed someone who was a very good communicator and easy to access. Finally, the home had never been updated, so there were many unknowns about what might be discovered during the demo and remodel stages. We bought the home in 2012 on a short sale "as-is" and rented it out until we started the remodel. At the bid stage, Danny Montijo (CEO of DM Building) provided the most detailed proposal by far. His pricing was also very competitive. He had been recommended by the architect who had drawn up our plans and he was at the top of our Angie's list search as well. We made our decision to go with Danny based on the referrals, his bid and phone conversations. He proved to be a very good communicator throughout. Since he doesn't do any of the hands-on work himself, he was very prompt in returning calls - phone/txt/email are his main personal tools. His very detailed bid/estimate proved to be a very helpful document throughout the project, as it was easy to see what was included and what wasn't. Quality-wise, the project was first class. During our periodic visits, we were able to talk not only to some of his team, but also to some of his subcontractors. Danny's requirement for high quality was constantly brought up unsolicited. Subtle aspects of higher quality were regularly pointed out. - from tile work, to painting, to cleaning up. Really, at every step, every decision. The bid was fixed price; we never had a situation where Danny came back to us and complained about an aspect of the project going over budget if the task proved more difficult than expected. He was extremely fair and ethical. He was also straightforward - if he ran into a problem or felt he needed to recommend something that was originally outside the scope, he did so, provided a price, and we felt it was fair. Some of the discoveries during the demo and remodel were ugly ones in terms of budget and schedule (e.g. we learned we needed to re-pipe all hot & cold water and there was a recommendation to install all new drainage under the house, which we decided to do). We also made requests for additions/modifications that were outside of the original scope, such as adding some electrical, putting new insulation in the attic, etc. In a couple of cases, costs of the scope additions came back higher than expected, but we never felt like we were being taken advantage of - it was just a matter of the actual costs being higher than what we expected based on initial verbal discussions. Another positive aspect was Danny's willingness to provide his opinion (or say he didn't have one), if we asked him a design question. In a couple of cases where Danny had strong feelings about a particular design plan that we hadn't yet implemented, he volunteered his opinion. A couple of those recommendations proved to be very beneficial. Danny was also helpful in steering us toward products (e.g. doors & handles) where had no knowledge of what to order or specify. He recommendations were generally for high quality at a good price with a proven vendor. Danny was also very skilled in managing interactions with inspectors. His good people and communication skills are very valuable in those aspects. He handled many behind-the-scenes aspects of the project without us having to worry about them. The only "problem" we had with the project was overall schedule. The project was supposed to take 4-5 months, but wound up taking much longer. One factor was the long-distance/remote nature of the project. Our general inexperience in remodeling/construction and our lack of availability when certain decisions needed to be made also played a role. Another factor was availability of subcontractors or crews. The project was done during a period of peak demand for good GCs and subs; one of the unpleasant learnings we had as clients was that project schedule was more dependent on subcontractor availability than anything else and that GCs have little to no control over that aspect. Even with his own staff, our project was competing with other commitments, so a delay on our end with a decision sometimes translated into subs or his own staff no longer being available. For quality and cost reasons, it appeared that Danny uses only certain subs, so if a key one is not available when the project is at the "ready" stage, it can be a problem. Good news conversations are easy to have; you find out about your GC and he finds out about you when you have to discuss bad news (such as ugly discoveries about the home's infrastructure that only become evident during demo or a schedule delay, etc). We found that we could have these difficult discussions in an open and respectful manner with no finger pointing or acrimony. His staff that we interacted with were very professional and polite and clearly had good chemistry when they were working together. He has very experienced staff who like working for someone with a focus on quality and doing things right. In the end, the overall result was outstanding in terms of how the remodel itself turned out. Danny lived up to his high marks on Angie's list. We have received many compliments about the remodel, including from subs who have worked on various aspects of it and know what they're looking at when they see the work of others on the project. After we moved into the home, if a problem popped up, Danny was very quick to respond and fix it. On the payment and financing side, everything went smoothly - Danny was easy to work with and very fair.

I am extremely happy with my patio covering. Dan and his workers did an awesome job! They were easy to work with and I had confidence that it was being done right! This was a small job for them. It may have taken a bit more time than it should have but it is hard to find good (busy) builders who will squeeze in smaller Jobs. Expensive, but I believe you get what you pay for! I love my patio covering! Thanks, DM Building
Description of Work: Built an outdoor patio cover including, six recessed lights, two ceiling fans, four skylights, electrical outlets, fire sprinklers and it's wired for sound. It matches my Home perfectly!
