When I contracted for the service, Pro Home Systems required me to pay $480 in advance, charged to my credit card. They were to charge $120 per hour, and if they finished the work in under four hours, they would pro-rate the cost and return the balance to me. I specifically asked if they could not do the job, would they charge me. The person on the phone said, "No." The technician arrived on time and was pleasant throughout. I am not an expert in the kind of work done, but taking two hours to connect the computer to my home audio system seems to me to be an excessive amount of time. When he completed the hook-up, the technician volunteered to program my Harmony remote control to manage the new connection when I streamed Netflix. I agreed, and he took the remainder of the time (until the $480 was spent) doing this, with the result as described in the above section. After the work was completed, I called the technician about a problem I was having. It took five days for him to return my call, but he did answer my question. I called about another problem, but he never returned my call. I called the merchant to complain about the work and the unreturned call. About the missed call, the merchant said that the technician had had an emergency and had not been available. I believe the merchant should have called me to explain the delay and told me when I should call back to reach the merchant. Regarding the quality of the work, the merchant corroborated the technician's assertion that the technician was highly trained to work on Harmony remotes. The merchant said that Harmony remotes were unreliable, and he then tried to sell me a different remote. The merchant said that something probably went wrong with the Harmony remote after the work was done. It seems odd to me that a particular problem would begin immediately after the work is done. It seems likely to me that the problem was created as a result of the work done. I think the technician should have said that the Harmony remote was unreliable before he started working on it, so that I could make an informed decision about whether to go ahead with the work. Since half the work had been done unsatisfactorily, I asked the merchant for a refund of half of my payment. He refused. A few months later, I called Earthlink, my internet service provider, about another issue and happened to complain about the clunkiness of selecting a Netflix streaming movie since the work was done. The Earthlink technician found a solution that now permits me to select streaming movies much more easily. I still have to use two remotes, however to stream movies.
Description of Work: The technician connected by computer to my home audio system, so that I could play streaming media from my computer through my audio system's speakers. This was accomplished. While there, he volunteered to program my Harmony remote control to take charge of Netflix to simplify the streaming process. This was done, but in a way that made the process more complicated than it had been before he did the work. For example, before he did the work, I was able to transfer Netflix to my TV with little effort. After his work was completed, I had to use my computer mouse to move the image from my computer to the TV screen, and I had to select the movie from a list shown on the TV but not on the computer, making the process unpleasant and cumbersome. Before the work was done, I used only one remote to control Netflix; after it was completed, I needed to use two remotes, because his work did not include reprogramming the receiver, only the TV.
