Description of Work: Brian did an evaluation of work that was done by another contract. Work that we didn't think was done well but wanted to be sure. Brian was thorough, professional, clearly extremely experienced and wise, and pointed a few things out which we didn't know that were dangerous. Not only that, but he pointed out ways the contractor had drilled through the floor joists might be unsafe and needed to be addressed. We ended up having a structural engineer inspect and he agreed, recommending the joists be supported with strapping. None of that would we have known or done without Brian's eye. | |He's semi-retired and doesn't take big jobs at all any more. Won't crawl in your attic or under your house, doesn't want more than 5-10 hours of work a week. But if you need advice or wisdom, I couldn't think of anyone I'd go to before Brian.

Description of Work: We needed an outlet installed for a new dishwasher, replacing an old dishwasher which had a hard-wired electrical connection. New dishwashers require an electrical outlet. Nelson Electric was contacted the day we found this out, and Mr. Nelson himself was out later that day to perform the installation. Access was difficult, but he performed the work, and provided useful advice about plumbing changes that were also needed.

I waited for Brian the owner around that time at the house. I waited until 9:30am and he didn't show. So around 10:45 am I notice there was voice mail from him. He mentioned he came and knock and no one answered the door. He also said he didn't have cell reception to call me. This all could have been all true I am in the Oakland hills and the phone reception is bad and my house doesn't have a doorbell and I could have missed his door knock. I called him back to discuss what happened. I also apologize if I missed him if indeed he showed up at 9am. I asked if we could reschedule another meeting. He basically in a very rude and arrogant manner said I am not interested in the job. If you reviewing this post I recommend to stay away from Nelson Electric maybe his work is good but you will be dealing with a short fuse.
Description of Work: I scheduled an appointment in advance of a week to get a quote for installing a 240 watt outlet for my garage. The appointment was at 9am.

Response from Nelson Electric
I was there at the agreed upon time. I knocked (banged) on the door and windows repeatedly. I tried to call but there was no cell reception in the hills. Contractors grade their customer experiences just like customers grade their contractor experiences. Failing to keep an appointment is a very negative first step but not necessarily the final judgment. In the [removed member name] case I also considered that the doorbell didn't seem to work yet the [removed member name] didn't use a little extra vigilance at the exact time of our appointment. Furthermore, the general unkempt appearance of the yard with stacks of unwanted? things stored along driveway did not leave a favorable impression. Based on the information I had I decided I was not interested in working for the [removed member name] . When Mr. [removed member name] called I simply stated I was not interested in rescheduling a visit.

The first visit was largely to resolve a nonworking circuit under the house, add a power outlet in the garage, and evaluate how safe the electrical system was in the kitchen (I purchased the house only a year earlier and the kitchen had been upgraded). What he told me made both irritated at the sloppy non-code work done, and reassured that despite this, the house wasn't "unsafe." He took time to educate me on what was wrong about the wiring and what it should be. He identified several things that could be corrected and let me prioritized what needed to be done right away, and what I should do if I have more time/money. The second visit was geared at rectifying some of the more urgent problems but couldn't be addressed in the first visit. Brian was friendly & courteous, professional and instructional, and didn't seem to mind me asking dumb questions. He laid out paper before setting his tools on the counter, picked up after himself, and was organized with his work area. He was punctual and he was professional. I would not hesitate to use him again.
Description of Work: Over two visits, Brian Nelson helped me diagnose a problem with some circuits, bring some additional circuits up to code, drop additional outlet under the kitchen sink, and bring additional power into the garage.

Beian Nelson shows up on time, returns phone calls and E-mails in a tinely manner, and has competetive prices. He had my new dryer wired up and running in under an hour. I have now hired him to replace a fuse box with a circuit breaker panel. I consider him my "go to guy" for all things electric.

See above.....it went very, very well.
Description of Work: I had several jobs for him. First, we began in one of my rental units, repairing two sockets that seemed to be shorted out. Brian quickly fixed both of them and then adjusted my outdoor motion sensitive light that is connected to the same rental unit. I showed him some future work in my attic, where he volunteered a couple of quick safety changes. We then went to another rental where he found that an outdoor porch light was just too old and needed to be replaced. While I went to Home Depot to get a new fixture, he then worked on another project putting in a new light above the entrance to two of the rental units, needed so that the tenants can walk up to the common outside door and be able to see the lock, etc. This required completely new wiring, but was done in a relatively short time. Brian's attitude was excellent; he was extremely comfortable to work with, was very patient about explaining what the options might be and I cannot tell you how glad I am to find a great electrician......five of the first six electricians that I called didn't even bother to call me back. I cannot recommend Brian enough. A bonus to all of this was that he turned out to be extremely reasonably priced, which was a surprise to me, in that I never asked him how much he charged per hour. I am confidant that anybody that uses Brian will be very glad they did.

I have worked with Brian three times in the last month and highly recommend him.
Description of Work: My first need was to have the work of another electrician corrected. Brian fixed the problems quickly. He was responsive, professional and priced well. I had him come out a second time to split two circuits in my house. Which he did professionally and on budget. I then had him out a third time to put in some recessed lights. After working with several electricians that were all over the place, Brian is my first choice. I highly recommend him.

He was willing to come and provide his services the day after Christmas. Brian removed a light fixture and installed another. The first fixture broke when he removed it so he didn’t charge me at all. He was very honest and I am happy with his services.

Brian was professional, courteous, experienced, helpful and knowledgeable. He went the extra mile into a tight crawlspace under my bathroom to run a new line to our baseboard heater. We had been disappointed with the heater and he quickly diagnosed that it was installed on a 120 line but needed 240V to work properly. His hourly rate and bill for parts was very reasonable.
