Installation day After indicating we needed to get this done and completely finished before end-of-year due to rebates Around the Clock scheduled a date and arrived promptly at my property at 9am. 3 of their installers arrived and setup. About an hour later the owner of company swung by to talk and see how things were going. The job took about 8 hours to complete with a 1 hour lunch break. The installers put down drop clothes and were extremely professional and kept my place in good condition. Towards the end-of-the installation the owner came back and they installed a touch screen remote along with a secondary remote. He showed me how it was used. He also dropped off all the rebate paperwork, except for State of California rebate forms as had to wait until City inspection was completed before he could complete those forms. The installers finished and cleaned-up very nicely. It was a lot of work but I think they did a good job. Problems encountered I have had no problems with the HVAC system but did have problems with the installation passing the City inspection. Around the Clock schedule the inspection and I took the day off work. The inspector showed-up and said I can?t pass this as the vent pipe was 3? and should be 4? per code. I got Around the clock on the phone and they said ok. About 2 hours later an installer came out and replaced the 3? with 4? vent pipe. Again Around Clock set up time with inspector and I had to take another day off from work to meet with inspector. 2nd inspection day came around and about 12pm no inspector. I called City of LA Dept of Building and Safety and they told me I had been bumped to the following Monday. I was outraged as no one called and told me, I had taken off from work, and I was leaving out of town for vacation that Sunday for a week. I spent 2 hours calling various people in Dept of Building and Safety trying to get someone out to my property that day but they wouldn?t budge. I got lucky as my roommate was going to be home on Monday so he was there when the Inspector came out again. Again it failed inspection. This time inspector said that the contractor only installed 4? part of the way and not all the way out of the property to the roof line. They were supposed to install 4? vent pipe all the way out of the property. Now I?m mad at Around the Clock for doing a partial job. Did they mess anything else up that I don?t know about. I?m now out of state and I call Around the Clock and they send someone out the same day and complete the work properly and again reschedule another inspection. This 3rd time it passed. The third inspection had to pass or I would not have qualified for the State of California rebate which had an end date of December 31st to be completed. I?m glad it did because I would have held Around the Clock responsible if it did not pass a 3rd time. Final Section Overall I?m extremely happy with the system I chose. It does a great job of heating our house. Even though there was extreme frustration during the permitting process I have to give it to Around the Clock as they busted their behinds and responded the same day by sending someone out to get the requirement of the inspector met. I also give thumbs up to Max who always answered the phone nicely and professionally. In the end I would recommend Around the Clock to anyone who is looking for a good HVAC dealer. I would recommend you do your research as much as possible. Understand the different parts being installed especially ask about the coil and if it?s from the manufacturer of the equipment being installed or from a third party company. Ask what is warranted and what is not. Be an informed consumer.
Description of Work: As December 2010 approached I decided I wanted to replace my existing A/C unit which was 18 years old and seemed to need repairs every season. It did its job but was time to move on. Additionally there were Federal Tax rebates that I could qualify for. Time to get bids. What I had 3 ton A/C Rheem split system with unknown manufacturer coil. I have a townhome with the blower and heater in an attic space that can only be described as small. Condenser is on roof of townhome. The bidding process I asked my existing contractor who had been servicing my unit for 6 years, since I bought the property, along with two other contractors who were listed on Angie’s list as top two HVAC contractor’s in area to bid. The first contractor: (my existing contractor) After performing a repair I asked contractor to bid on a new unit. We talked a little and then his office sent me the following 4 bids. BID 1: TRANE Condenser of XL16, 2 stage; Model #T4TTX60481000A. TRANE Furnace of XV95, Horizontal in attic; Model #TTUH2C100A9V4VA. Coil; Model #ACE48D442. Crane service and electrical work also included in price. Not included was Los Angeles City Permit which they said would be $500 more but representative of company said I didn’t need (Not true) Second Contractor: (From Angie’s List rated #1 by reviews in my area) NAME: Around the Clock Air Conditioning and Heating, Inc. I contacted company via number listed on Angie’s list. They answered phone professionally and setup an appointment for a person to come out and provide quote. I received call from Bob who then setup exact time. Bob showed up did a quick walk around and then sat down with binder and started quoting me Lennox equipment. Bob did not go onto roof or view equipment inside unit but just looked up at attic where system was installed. I asked him about Rheem and Trane but he skirted around a direct answer but kept coming back to we are a Lennox dealer and can provide best pricing on Lennox. I asked various questions which he seemed to answer but it was obvious he was the salesperson not the technician. I later found out he is the traveling salesperson for the company. His job is to quote the job and then the Around the Clock staff take over after the bid is accepted. Not necessarily bad but not necessarily good either from my point of view. The bids Bob placed 4 different bids on paper that more or less matched types quoted by first contractor. What Bob did differently is that he showed me all the qualifying rebates available to me. I asked him to quote me the one that qualified for Federal rebate, California rebates etc.. It also had a $200 rebate from Lennox. Bid Condensor 3 Ton 16 Seer, 13 EER Lennox Model 14ACX Coil Furnace 80 AFLUE Lennox SL280V Included connect to exisiting drain line, connect to existing vent pipe(s), Connect to existing refrigeration piping, install stainless steel gas line w/safety shutoff valve, inspect all accessible ducts and do minor sealing if needed, connect to existing electrical supply, install electrical switch box, City permit/State Duct Certificate, disconnect existing equipment and remove from premise, install safety shutoff switch to prevent water damage, (Install high efficiency air cleaner AC16 if possible, install violet air purification system Sterile Air), Crane service, first year A/C and heating tune up included. Warranties 10 years parts and labor ($500 to extend labor warranty to 10 years through Around the Clock). All other equipment had 10 year warranty with 20 years on Heat Exchanger. Gross Pricing $10,250 Discounts $2000 (didn’t say on quote what these discounts actually where) Before Xmas discount: $500 Angie List discount $100 Net before Rebates $7650 Rebates available DWP $300 Lennox $200 Federal $1500 State of California $1000 Net if all rebates available ** $4850 Pay $7650 to Around the clock and then apply for rebates on own. State of Cal is based on availability of funds from limited pool. Check with accountant about Federal. NOTES: Had to complete all processes by 12/31/10 for State of Cal can be sent in and then cross fingers that got paperwork in before money runs out or my net after rebates goes to $5850. I won’t know until about 1-2 months later if I got it in time. As you will find out I chose this contractor but when I did I was told the Lennox rebate was no longer available. I also later found out that I actually qualified for $360 from DWP so that help a little. Additionally, a week later Al the owner came out to the property and actually did a full inspection of my installation as I was also asking if I could zone my unit as I was getting wild temperature fluctuations between floors. After inspection Al informed there was not enough room in my attic to properly configured the duct work to allow for zoning. I had heard this from other contractors also. But he also said there was not enough room to install the high efficiency air cleaner and the violet air purification system. The air cleaner because it required 18” to be pulled out and I didn’t have the room and the air purification system because there was not enough clearance on the roof line. I understood all of this to be true. I called Bob back and asked for discount but was informed that the company was throwing these in as extra’s as they got them on very low special pricing from manufacturer. I was a little upset about this but now I was up against a timeline to complete process because of rebates and it still ended up they were offering the better price. Third Contractor: (From Angie’s List rated #2 by reviews in my area) I contacted company via number listed on Angie’s list. Phone was answered professionally and a time was set for a representative of their company to come out and review my HVAC requirements. I forgot name of person who came out but I think was owner. He looked at my system for about 15 minutes and then said I can’t do this project because I can’t offer you a price that will be competitive and still make money as he felt it was too difficult to do the work. The location of my equipment inside my unit is in a very awkward place. I thanked him for his honesty and then asked him about Around the Clock. He said he bid against them frequently and they were a very reputable company. The Research process Now I have bids from two companies and running out of time to qualify for the Federal and other rebates so I immediately jumped on web and to research Trane, Rheem and Lennox. Well I was in for a rude surprise. Not only could I not find solid information I couldn’t even find pricing to compare what I had been quoted. What I found out is it is like trying to compare prices on mattresses. You can’t. I found out the dealers guard their prices and bundle them into installation prices. Additionally there are so many combinations in a split system that it is impossible to get price comparisons. Example is the manufacturer may make the Heater/blower and condenser but the coil is made by another company. The bidding contractor configures the systems with different combinations to get desired product for customer. Note: I sent Angie’s list a request to startup a HVAC section so consumers can compare prices not only contractors. If they don’t do it I may have to as I found this frustrating that couldn’t compare between brands and even within brands I couldn’t compare and get pricing comparisons. Choosing the contractor After much soul searching I chose Around the Clock based on two factors. 1) Their reviews on Agie’s list, 2) the package they put together and the subsequent net cost after rebates, and 3) the first contractor indicating I didn’t need a city permit so I could save money. Go back to their bid section for pricing information. Product I chose and pricing I chose the following configuration: See section on bid as that is what I chose and the pricing is also indicated that I paid.
