Estimator did not provide what I was asking for and never provided a quote for the repairs.
Description of Work: I need to replace my air conditioning condenser. I called out Cool Air Solutions to give me a quote. I instructed them I did not want to change the entire heating/cooling system, but only the condenser. The estimator understood and then wanted to look at the units. Currently the HVAC unit is located in the attic. The estimator did not have a ladder to enter the area, so I had to provide one. That was not a problem, and after his review of the HVAC unit and the review of the condenser unit, he instructed me that I needed to replace the entire unit with a new system, at a cost of over $12,000. The entire system is currently working just fine, but the system is 18 years old and when the outside air temp goes above 105 deg F, the condenser really starts to labor. I informed the estimator of these facts. The estimator also informed me the inlet and room ducting was crushed in places and not allowing proper flow. With my current job, I have the equipment to measure this flow and found no restrictions on any vent or on the inlet ducting. The blower fan is flowing the rated CFM per the label on the unit. I asked if we could just change the condenser unit for now. He informed me that was possible but he would not recommend it would not be as efficient. I understand that a whole new unit would be more efficient and a lot more costly. The estimator kept pushing for a whole unit change out. At this point I understood I was not going to get anymore information from him and I asked him to please provide me with two quotes. One for the whole unit change out and the other for just the condenser unit change out. I was never provided with either. I did interview two other contractors, and both said that there was no need to change the entire unit out. I was provided quotes by both contractors on the spot and have signed a deal with one of them. Cool Air Solutions was very professional at times, but I was not impressed by the follow thru on the quote. If that is how they perform there business, I will pass.

Extremely positive. Through Angie's list we contacted and got proposals from 4 different companies. All were extremely informative and professionlal. We chose Approved Air primarily because Mike, owner operator, seemd to be very genuine and really wanted our business. He also was offering like products to the others with a better warranty and the best price. After telling him we wanted to move forward with him, he came out, went over the job requirements one more time, clarified a few things and scheduled the installation. He was on time for the installation, extremely neat and organized and completed the work with very little disruption. Bottom line, made a commitment and delivered on it. I recommend him highly.
Description of Work: We were looking to add A/C to a 25 year old 4 bedroom, 2600 sq ft house. Decided to replace the oriignal furnace as well.

Mike Gentry met me with me and my wife in late August to go over our needs to add a central AC System, an April Air 5000 air purifier.as well as some upgrades to the existing system. Mike is a "doer" not just a talker. He brings his electrical background and the guy is bull strong both his character and his physical work. Mike's son is super polite and engaged just like his pop but he doesn't just stand around while Mike was briefing me about the job. His son is always working. That's impressive! Ok a wrap up. I sign up on Angies List I find Mike's Business " APPROVED AIR INC", Call or email the company. Mike Calls me and consults with me based on the needs of my home. We set up a home visit Mike arrives and I can tell that this is the owner operator ..The real deal! He has knowledge base of the products that I am interested in and the installation process to the details. He works up some quotes and emails them to me. My wife and I in turn set up a time for Mike to come by so we can get an order going. The product arrives a short time later and we set up an install date. The installation goes super smooth over a couple of days. Mike gives me a call at work to let me know he has completed the job. I get home and the house is in order. There are no scraps, packaging or scrapes or broken items. After I settle in from returning from work, Mike returns to go over the job and instruction/instruction manuals. I thank Mike and write him a check for the services. A couple of weeks later the permit process that is facilitated by Mike is complete. All is good!

On the 19th of July while enjoying our vacation home we came back from an outing only to discover, in the midst of a heatwave (of course), that the air conditioner was not working. We were going home the next day and I was concerned that not only was I going to have to return for an appointment to ascertain the problem, but then I was going to have to come down yet again for the actual work. UGH! We therefore were absolutely delighted that the next morning, within 90 minutes of finding and calling Mike via Angie's List, he was at our door! Within ten minutes of analysis he determined what the problem was and its seriousness. Instead of seeing a nice payday for himself however, he spent the next 30-40 minutes troubleshooting and fixing the problem thus trying to avoid us from giving him thousands of dollars. While these efforts proved fruitless, they were very much appreciated by my husband and me. What was also impressive was his willingness to work with my husband and his professional obligations back home to schedule the actual work and estimated a one or two day job. Thus on the 26th of July he and his sons arrived right on time and proceeded to get to work immediately. They worked extremely hard and quick and finished the job in just one day. Our new unit is not only more cost efficient, its quieter and performs much better than the previous one. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Mike and his two young sons and we highly recommend them to everyone and anyone reading this review.

One of our AC condensers had stopped functioning during the early September heat wave. I don't know any AC service people, so I checked Angie's to look some up. Everyone who reviewed Mike at Approved Air seemed very pleased with his service. I called midday and got his answering service, as he was likely out working. They were very pleasant, took my info, and Mike called at 5pm to schedule my service for a couple days later. Since it was quite hot still, I thought this was pretty timely, as he was very busy. I even needed to call back and reschedule my original appointment for the next day, due to another conflict. No problem. Mike arrived right when he said he would, got to work, and diagnosed a bad capacitor in a few minutes. He had the correct part in his truck, and showed me the old blown part to illustrate the difference with the new one. He also offered to put in a hard start kit, which he explained would provide extra power to the compressor and fan when they kicked on. Completely my choice, he said it was helpful but not necessary. I asked him if he would use it in his own home, and he said he would, so he added that too. He checked the rest of the wiring and connections for any corrosion or issues and found none. We started the unit up and it kicked right in with nice cold air. Perfect repair! All told, Mike was in and out in less than 40 minutes. Total cost; $286 ($80 for the replacement capacitor, $100 for the hard start kit at my option, $89 for the service call/diagnostic, $17 tax). I thought it was going to be a lot more, honestly. Summary: Courteous, punctual, efficient, reasonably priced. Couldn't ask for anything more. I would not hesitate to call Mike again for any AC/heating needs for my family or friends. Great guy!

It went exceptionally well. At first, I called Costco, and was going to go with their contractor. I'm so glad I didn't. The people at Cool Air Solutions were so professional, and did such a good job, that I know I couldn't have asked for more. In addition, their price was quite good. Right now, there are rebates being offered, but I really liked what Justin Holmquist at Cool Air Solutions had to offer. Instead of having me pay the full price, and then waiting for my rebates to come in the mail (months later), he subtracted them up front. This means that the amount I had to finance was MUCH lower. This makes a huge difference, of course, in the amount of interest you pay over 5, 10, or 15 years! In other words, HE was willing to wait for the rebates to come in the mail, rather than have me wait. You can't beat that. Justin's crew (Mike Guddy, T.J., and Jose) did a fantastic job on the installation. They fixed all the ducts that needed repair, checked all the vents to make sure they were sealed properly, and came back to do some sort of combustion test...I think it's like the HERS test. Cool Air Solution's employees are NATE certified. I highly recommend Cool Air Solutions if you are in need of any kind of air condtioning or heating services. It's so nice to get a job done correctly the first time, and at a great price!
Description of Work: I purchased the Lennox XC21-048 air conditioner (18 SEER) and the Lennox SL280V furnace. Cool Air Solutions came and took out the old furnace and air conditioner and installed the new ones. They installed all new vents, and made sure that they were sealed properly. They fixed some of the ducts that needed repair as well. A couple of days later, they came back to do a test on the system to make sure it was working properly.

I rarely need my ac but in the last few weeks it has gotten bad enough for me to turn it on. I had a 12 year old Goodman system that came with the house. About 24 hours after running, it let out a loud bang sound and quit cooling the house. I called Mike based on the reviews on AL and he came out promptly to diagnose. He checked the refrigerant and did a couple other tests to confirm the compressor had died. Gave me a couple options for the best way to replace the system, based on the R22 or R410 choices available. He did not charge me for that visit. The price I paid was for a new Maytag with a 12 year warranty and 5 year labor warranty by Mike himself. He and his son arrived promptly on their scheduled day and worked tirelessly all morning to get the old system removed and new system up. They pushed through lunch to finish early so I was able to enjoy the Ac that day. I would highly recommend them and definitely use them again.

I didn't have to wait for an appointment; he came out promptly. He's very nice & professional & he knows what he's doing. The rate charged was good. There was a problem with the install - the fan was still running even though the a/c was turned off - but he came back promptly & took care of everything. He's a very honest, family man.

In late July 2012, we came home from the hospital with a new baby. Southern California was experiencing a heat wave and the inside of our house was around 90 degrees with all the windows open and fans blowing. We were all miserable, couldn't sleep and the new baby was getting prickly heat pimples. We decided that now was the time to have our current heating system upgraded with air conditioning. After the first estimate I received by a competitor of Approved Air, I was reconsidering the whole thing due to costs, but then decided to get a few more estimates. Mike came out within a day of my call and we talked about options, brands and some of the services he recommended. I was really impressed with his knowledge and easy going personality. He gave his opinions when I asked for them but wasn't pushing any particular brand. He also wasn't aggressive about scheduling the service. He promised to have a bid for me in two days due to the busy time of the year, but he ended up getting it to me in just one day. The offer was extremely reasonable for the amount of work to be performed in addition to the pricy equipment I selected. I also knew that it would be Mike and his son installing the system, not some third party that I hadn't met which was a huge positive factor as well. I decided that Approved Air would get my business. Mike fit me into his schedule at soon as he could. He showed up 15 minutes early each day he was scheduled to work. He and his son Kyle were EXTREMELY clean and meticulous. They vacuumed around all their work areas, took all their trash (and some that was already there), and the level of detail in the work itself was stellar. I'm a very critical person and am difficult to please, but after inspecting all the work I was amazed. The duct work Kyle performed sealing the seams, securing loose lengths and wrapping them with new insulation was perfect and pleasing to the eye. Mike did some custom fabrication on top of my existing heat pump to fit the evaporator coil and I have since gone down to look at his work several times because everything is so spot on right down to coiling up his low voltage line just to look nice and tidy. The same can be said about the condenser lines that were run under the house, the electrical lines and the rigging of the condenser itself. It was just beautiful work. Also worth mentioning is that Mike consulted me before he did anything crucial to the house, for instance before he cut a hole in the side of the house to run the condenser line, he asked me about it and my opinion about the aesthetics, etc. To summarize, the install job was beautiful. Of course, when Mike fired up the system to test, everything functioned perfectly. I'm typing this from a very comfortable house and have a smile ear to ear. Worth every penny and from now on all my family and friends are going to be redirected to Approved Air for all their homes. Mike and Kyle are simply good, honest people with positive can do attitudes even in the face of difficult issues. Not a single four letter word out of either of them proves you can send them to your Grandma's house! Thanks Mike and Kyle!
Description of Work: Approved Air Inc. installed a new 4 ton, 14 SEER condenser and evaporator and adapted it to my current heat pump system in a raised foundation house built in 1975. They ran all necessary plumbing and electrical and performed custom sheet metal fabrication to fit the evaporator to the existing heat pump. They repaired broken and dis joined duct work, secured, sealed and applied new insulation. They also installed a new touch screen thermostat.

I turned my central air on for this first time at the beginning of the August heat wave here in Southern California. The compressor whined and did not want to do a good job. After 2 hours water poured from the attic ceiling. I called the air condition and heating businesses from Angie’s List. Since my husband is elderly with health complications I needed the unit ASAP. My free estimate with Approved Air Inc. was on August 9, 2012. The owner Mike Gentry and his sons are courteous and appreciative of our business. They went out of their way to work on Saturday August 11, 2012 to install our Maytag Air Conditioner and Heat Pump. They arrived as scheduled and were very professional. They were considerate to leave the house as clean as they found it. By Saturday evening we had our cooling system. We felt as if Approved Air came to our rescue. I liked that they are a friendly local family business. I was impressed that the labor warranty is 5 years. I highly recommend Approved Air for installation of air conditioning and heating systems.
Description of Work: Approved Air Inc. installed the Maytag 13-16 SEER R-410A Split System Air Conditioner and Heat Pump as schedule. This would be sufficient for our 1300 sq. ft. home. The house was prepared for installation of the attic unit in the crawl space and a ladder place under the small entry. Working in over 100 degree heat in the attic the old rusted air handler was removed and the new unit installed. Next the outside was prepared for installation. In our free standing condo their is no entrance to the backyard so a door was removed to go through the garage. The old unit was removed and the new unit was place on the existing slab. With close quarters in our tiny yard piping was rerouted to a better location. Last the Honeywell thermostat was installed and the unit's air conditioning and heating were tested. Everything in the house, garage and yard were replaced, materials cleaned up and rusted old units whisked away. The installation took approximately 8 hours. I really liked that any problems were solved quietly and efficiently. I was so pleased with a job done in such a professional manner. The unit that was replaced was about 16 or 17 years old. I knew we had compressor problems about 3 or 4 years ago. We have lived here 10 years and never had the units inspected or cleaned. I will do so in the future on a yearly basis.

Showed up right on time and went right to work. Was so impressed with the quality of work performed. Mike didn't mind answering all my questions and explained everything he was doing to the A/C unit. A lot of service companies won't do that. He gave me great piece of mind in the services performed. I will definitely be using Approved Air in the future. I have great piece of mind knowing that good, quality work was being performed.
Description of Work: Fantastic, HONEST work. Air conditioner wasn't blowing cold air. The problem was quickly diagnosed as a broken capacitor. Also provided maintence on the A/C unit to ensure it was in good working order.

Fantastic. I would highly recommend using Approved Air if your in the market for repair or new service or my need of removing an A/C unit. You will be in good hands.
Description of Work: I needed to have an outside A/C unit moved. I was not replacing it, just needed it out of the way, for our backyard pavers. I called and got an estimate and Mike and his son came and removed it, the same day. He took care of the freon, explained to me what all the electrical wires were and some other tubing in the yard. I thought it was going to cost an arm and an a leg, but he was very reasonably price. I would definately use his service again if needed and would highly recommend him to my family and friends.

Last Fall, I called a different HVAC company and asked for an estimate to repair our upstairs A/C unit. They quoted $1,000 to fix it which seemed a bit high to me, so we decided to wait until summer to get a different opinion. This morning, I called Approved Air and talked to an operator who informed me that Mike would be calling me to talk about the problem soon. He called within an hour and asked some questions about the problem, then he set an appt. to come by in the early afternoon to look at it and give an estimate to fix. He showed up right on time, offered to place booties on his shoes to protect my floor (I declined, but it was nice of him to offer!), and I then showed him the unit. He took it apart and diagnosed the problem in about 20 minutes. He quoted $550 in parts and $85 in labor to fix it. He really seemed knowledgeable, although he said that he rarely sees a problem like mine (just lucky, I guess!). He had to go up to Escondido to pick up the parts that he needed and he was back in about 45 minutes to make the repairs. He repaired the unit in about an hour and tested it to make sure that it was working properly. His manner was friendly, but professional, and I really felt like I couldn't have had a better experience with anyone else. I would definitely recommend him and the company and I'll definitely hire him in the future as Heating/AC service is needed.
Description of Work: Our upstairs A/C unit broke in early Fall 2011 and didn't feel the need to fix it until I'd need it in the summer. The fan motor was rusted out and needed to be replaced. Mike replaced the fan motor and the capacitor/contactor on the A/C unit.

Overall, the service was great. Mike was on time, knowledgable, professional and fairly priced.
Description of Work: I had checked on Angie's List for a reputable company to come out and work on our air conditioner. Our pipes were freezing up so much so that they were completely white. I called Mike because his company had an A rating. I have to say he was great. He showed up on time and knew exactly what the problem was and fixed it. He also suggested other services to help with the maintenance which he performed in a timely manner. I signed up for the yearly maintenance service which covers both heating and air. That cost was $198.00. I think it was money well spent because now I don't have to worry about it. Mike's company is family owned and reliable. I would refer him to anyone looking for heating/ac service. Thanks Mike! Great job.

It was a pleasure working with Approved Air. The work was first class. When the job had some unforeseen problems, Approved Air made sure the work was done correctly and made adjustments on the labor, which was fair. Because the work was done correctly and the job was fairly priced, I would highly recommend Approved Air to anyone.
Description of Work: I first used Approved Air for a detailed inspection of a home I was buying. They are very responsive and showed up on time. The inspection was complete and proffessional. The inspection was on the heating system and the air condition. I needed more information than the recieved from the home inspection company. Because Approved Air was fair on the inspection and pricing, I had them come back out to do some of the work identified. The original estimate for some correction work was about $800. However, after removing some of the ducts, it required some additional modifications that were not able to see in the original estimate/inspection. Approved Air put a full day making the cha nges and correcting for improper duct/heater venting. He installed new advance controllers that we had talked about previously in two locations. This was part of the reason that the actual work was higher. Approved Air did a great job and stayed on the job to make sure it was complete. The labor he charged was actually below his normaly rate because he felt that the job had some unforeseen work, he felt it was the right thing to do. Approved Air is honest, fair and very good at doing Heating & Air Conditioning. Any future work, I will be calling them for help.

Cool Air Solutions technicians arrived right on time and worked with few if any breaks. They completed the job in two days, as promised. At the end of the first day they made sure that the furnace was working because the nights were still quite cool. With the old system we had cold rooms and warm rooms. Cool Air did a great job in the ductwork modification because the temperature throughout the house is now uniform. The new equipment is very quiet. The thermostat is very clever. With the old one, for example, I would set the heat to come on at 6a.m. and set the temperature at 72 degrees. The new thermostat, with the same settings, decides, based on the temperature in the house, when it needs to come on in order to have the house at 72 degrees by 6a.m. Cool Air is one of several heating/ac contractors recommended by Southern California Edison who offers rebates on qualified systems. Before Edison will pay the rebate, a qualifying contractor must submit data proving that the system installed was correctly sized for the house. This requires submittal of very detailed volumetric measurements of the house. In addition, test data, which may be verified by SCE, has to be submitted after the installation showing that the stringent leakage requirements have been met. Before calling Cool Aire we requested a proposal from one of the other SCE approved contractors. Their sales/tech looked up in the attic at our ductwork and said they were fine - no work needed. His price, for the same equipment, no ductwork, no new registers, was $500 higher. Because of the excellent work by Cool Aire I recommended them to my neighbor. She hired them to replace her heating/ac system and was totally satisfied with the work.
Description of Work: Cool Air Solutions replaced my 23 year old heating/air conditioning system. In addition they modified the ductwork in the attic. They replaced the individual room registers and the thermostat.

Fantastic! From the start, Mike was extremely communicative and helpful. We emailed back and forth my requirements and the options that he could provide and he always answered quickly and with good options that fit our budget. One nice thing is that he doesn't sponsor a specific manufacturer so he was able to provide options to install different brands that fit my budget. I got three quotes from three different installers, one from Costco, and the other from another Angie's list installer and Mike was in the middle on price and seemed to really know his stuff, so we chose him. It took him three days to change the attic ducts and replace our existing furnace and AC. His work is fantastic. I could tell that he is very experienced and he went out of his way to make sure the installation was neat including re-routing the gas line and cleaning up the wiring. When he was done, he explained everything to us and setup the thermostat and showed us how to use it. He even matched the color of the air conditioner as best as possible to the house. Mike is trustworthy and hard working. When he and his worker was done, I gave them a little gift for doing such a great job. I highly recommend them and would use them again.
Description of Work: Replace attic air ducts, replace furnace, add air cleaner, add UV bulb, replace central air conditioner, vents, and thermostat.

Mike was responsive, professional and knowledgeable. He responded quickly to our initial phone call and was available within a couple days to come out an review our home to provide an estimate. During his walk-through of our home he asked good questions and answered our questions - all part of the process of deciding the best system for our needs. We received his quote quickly, and the quote was easy to understand and thorough. After receiving the quote we needed additional information in order to make sure that Mike's estimate, and the other estimate we were considering, we comparable. Mike was great about giving us additional information and definitely stayed in touch without being pushy. Both Mike and the other contractor we interviewed were professional, knew their stuff, nice, responsive and both had great Angie List reviews. We ultimately decided to accept the other estimate as it appeared that all other factors were equal, except for the price.
Description of Work: Provided an estimate for a 70,000 btu heating system including new duct work, 2 new registers/vents, with a new programmable thermostat. Work included the removal of old furnace and duct system.

Great, Mike spent 15 miuntes on phone discussing my options on this 20 year old furnace. Mike was extremely busy, yet he took the time between scheduled jobs to stop by and check my furnace. What was expeted to take at least an hour to troubleshoot, took him only 5 minutes. He quickly discovered what the problem was, had the part in stock on his truck, installed the new thermostat in 20 minutes, and had the furnace up and running like new.
Description of Work: Troubleshot furnace electrical control system. Took 5 minutes. Replaced thermostat. 20 minutes.

My husband called Approved on a Wednesday afternoon and Mike came out to our house about 8:30am the next morning as he had said he would. He was very helpful and went over everything regarding our AC with my husband who was very satisified with Mike's work.
Description of Work: Mike Gentry cleaned and inspected our Air Conditioning Unit. He chemically cleaned the condenser coil, replaced old valve caps and added freon to get unit at optimun cooling. We were very pleased with his work and would definitely call him again and would recommend. He was very punctual and we feel the cost was very fair.
