I went to Javeed at The Rug Center to talk about some rugs I'd inherited from my mother.
I'd grown up with these rugs; my mom grown up with these rugs; two of them could have been in the family longer than that. They've always been a part of my life. Two of them were abused to the point where my husband begged me to throw them away, but I could not do it.
I took the better of the four to the RugCenter to get them cleaned and see what could be done with them. Javeed told me about their restorations services, and I returned with the others. Javeed dated two of them at mid-1800s, the other two early 1900s, and showed me some examples of some of the restorations they'd done. Based on that, I decided to have all four restored.
Javeed sends the rugs to Pakistan for restoration, where they match the type of wool, dye it to match, then reweave the sections that are damaged. This process can take anywhere from 6 months to a year. About 6 months later, three of them came back in beautiful condition!!! I'm picking the fourth up tonight, and I expect it to look as goodl
The original rugs were imperfectly handwoven with irregularly dyed wools. That's pretty much the way things were or how they look after more than 100 years. The restoration of the rugs is consistant with the original style of the rug. They are beautiful and look wonderful in my house. I feel like I have a part of my childhood back :)
