Foothill Fence did a great job. I split the $3700 cost with my neighbor, so it was only $1850 for my half of the work. I really liked the steel posts they used, because that means there isn't wood going into the ground, where termites can chew on it and cause the fence to fail (our reason for replacing the original redwood fence we had). The job was finished in two days, with all of the old material hauled away. They saved some time by putting the new footings in at an offset from the original ones, so as to not have to dig up all of the old ones. The finished product looked great, nice straight lines, and the gates operate perfectly. I went with Foothill because they had done a great job with the fence between me and my other neighbor. I would easily recommend them for anyone doing redwood fence.

Thrilled with Foothill Fence job - Explained good reasons to get a vinyl fence instead of wood fence - it never needs, paint, washes down with a hose, withstands strong winds. Foothill Fence uses Universal Vinyl manufacturer that has more white pigment, stronger posts, and lifetime warranty. Darren Hicks who estimated the job wrote a very detailed contract so it was clear what I was buying. He came up with better ideas for the corners and gate hardware. The workmen were friendly and professional and did a great job. When I had a problem with the gate latch sticking, they came back immediately and fixed it perfectly at no extra charge. I am sold on using family owned, smaller businesses that take pride in their work and customer satisfaction I give them da score of 10+ for a job well done at very reasonable, competitive prices. My backyard is enclosed by a 5 foot block wall, but my neighbor's yard is on a slightly higher grade and it feels less private than I would like. The wall on that side was already compromised by a large tree on their side, which was removed and the wall repaired but I still was a bit concerned about having work done. I looked at several fence companies in the area and chose Foothill based on their knowledge of fence types - wood, iron, vinyl, chain link - since I wasn't sure what would be the best solution for me. Carl came out to give me an estimate. He had several good solutions that seemed to work for my situation. I chose to have a 2 foot vinyl fence installed on top of my block wall, which required to have posts drilled into the wall. His workers showed up on time and got to it. The posts were in place without any drama - even in the odd, still semi-damaged corner! Then the vinyl was put up. The finished piece looks great, and my yard was left as clean as it was before the work was done. I'm thinking about doing the other walls as well and will definitely call Foothill again

Carl had previously built the fence around my entire property at a cost of $11,500. The photo that I showed Carl of the fence I wanted was not the fence that was constructed. Carl is extremely unprofessional if you dislike the work he has done. When I expressed that the fence looked nothing like the fence we discussed in the picture, Carl got angry, turned beet red, and told my husband and myself, 'your starting to cost me money.' I was floored by his response. If you don't mind having to watch a melt down and being spoken to completely unprofessionally if you disagree with what he's done, then Carl is your man. Overpriced as well. Carl, You've got quite a vivid imagination given what you actually said while at our property! To say I was loud or aggressive is not only ridiculous, it's slanderous!!! You are a cheap penny pincher that can't take criticism. Don't forget my final email, I told you , we found you quite distasteful! It's incredible that we spent over $11,500 ALL CASH, and you have the nerve to wonder what went wrong!!!! You told me you thought I was 'too picky' when I asked you to replace a number of the splintered pickets your workers sloppily installed. Do not paint me out to be the bad guy because you are unprofessional and don't know how to control your rage when people criticize your work! You yelled at both my husband and i as if we were children!!! This was my final email to you, it was clear then that you knew you were wrong. On a final note. Given the little tantrum we witnessed when we criticized the latest fence we had installed, we have decided to take our final fencing project to another company. May I suggest you learn how to handle criticism better when handling your clients. As I am sure you are aware; Expressing that we were "costing you money" and raising your voice at the people PAYING you, was not only unprofessional and rude, but also quite distasteful. We are well enough off financially that we can afford a better fence than what you installed for us at an overly ballooned price tag, considering the basic and inexpensive materials you used. My final piece of advice? Do your work right the first time and act like you take pride in what you produce. This is a very sad end to what started out to be a very nice relationship with [Member names removed]. We first build the fence on one side of the yard and across the back. they were extremely happy with the finished result and shortly thereafter had us return to build a fence on the other side of the yard. Once again there were extremely happy. They were also having a lot of other projects done at their home and seemed to be having really bad luck with all of the other contractors. I had mentioned several times that they needed to join Angie’s list in order to find good quality contractors. They asked me to quote several other fence projects that they wanted to have done. Each time I talked to them they had complaints about other contractors, and they told me they wish the other contractors were like us. I kept nudging them to join Angie’s list so that they could find better contractors for the other work they were having done. I finally sent them a coupon and urged strongly that they join and so they did. The last fence that we built for them was a small fence that went between the house and garage. Lisa sent me numerous pictures of fences she had found on the Internet. I priced out probably six or eight different fences for that area. Finally they had made their decision and we scheduled to do the work. At some point they decided to have pavers put in to the area where the fence was going, and so this required an extra trip so that we could install the posts prior to the pavers being done. We would then have to return in order to build the fence. Since they had given us a pretty fair amount of business I decided to do this with no extra charge. Normally an extra trip out to a job is a minimum of $250. We then built the fence according to the picture that [Member name removed] had sent me. The following day I got a phone call from [Member name removed] saying that she was unhappy with the fence and it was not the fence shown in the picture she had sent me. I first went by the following day to be sure that our crew had not somehow misunderstood my instructions. I was happy to see that the fence was built exactly as planned and the crew had done a beautiful job . I then made an appointment to meet with them to try to figure out why they thought the fence was not what was in the picture. When I came, I met with [Member name removed] and I brought an enlarged picture of the fence they sent me I was able to show him piece by piece how each piece of wood we built the fence with, related to the picture. I also showed them how we determined the size of each piece of wood by use of an architect’s scale. [Member name removed] seemed to understand however it was clear that he thought we were building a different fence. So there was some miscommunication between [Member names removed]. [Member name removed] asked me if we could possibly make a few changes to the fence which I agreed to do at no charge. At one point [Member name removed] came out, and I guess she felt [Member name removed] was not being stern enough with me and became very aggressive and loud. I suppose at this point my face probably did turn red. I was certainly not expecting that type of interaction. I’ve thought about this a lot and cannot for the life of me figure out how I can show someone in a picture exactly how the fence is what’s in the picture and have them still feel that it’s not the same. I don’t know how to explain that. We returned and made the changes, and the project was exactly the price originally quoted even though we took a pretty big loss. It would have been nice if they wrote reviews on the first two fences that they were so happy with.

Darren definitely deserved A+. The product is great. I am getting many compliments. The installation was bumpy due to many reasons (outside of the company control), but Darren worked out every single issue to complete satisfaction. He has many useful ideas. He took time to drive and discuss all questions and concerns. And he did what he said he was going to do. His response is quick. He incorporates multiple prospectives to come up with the best decision. Since I have been renovated two houses in my life, I have an experience of dealing with the contractors. Darren is definitely on the top of my list.

From my initial conversation with Carl, I already liked Foothill. Compared to some of the other companies I spoke to, he was great at laying out all the work that needed to be done and took the time to explain anything that was unclear. He came to the house twice before any work was agreed upon, to ensure we were both on the same page. In terms of the price point, he was very competitive, coming in with the most reasonably priced bid. His guys were great. They showed up on time (if not earlier) and got the job done quickly in 3 days. Carl dropped by during the project and made sure things were going according to plan. Everything was cleaned up once the project wrapped. I will definitely be using Foothill for future projects.

I am a bit conflicted on this review. On the one hand, Carl himself is the utmost professional, and the end product came out great at a reasonable price. I see why the company is rated well. However, the guys that actually did the work (installing a vinyl fence) were sloppy and a bit disrespectful. Even though the contract said that excavated dirt would not be taken off the property, they used that clause to throw extra concrete powder into my vegetable planters. The first gate they built had been drilled wrong, so they just filled it with some sort of puddy, which was visible and scarred, and did not bother to tell us. When I called Carl, he was very friendly and went out to look at the property. He agreed to replace the gate, which took another week, but I was OK with that. He also had the guys come back and take away their trash. After the new gate was installed, the latch stuck a bit because it was out of alignment. Carl came back and readjusted it. Even though I later had to fix a bolt myself, I was generally very happy with Carl and the end product. I would likely use the company again, but I would probably request that Carl do the work himself if possible.

My new fence looks great and it's wonderful to have gates that actually open easily and swing free without scraping the ground. When I first met with Darren, I was looking for an alternative to a plain wooden fence and he told me about this Trex composite fence material which is supposed to be an environmentally green product, doesn't fade or warp, and is neighbor-friendly (meaning that it looks the same on both sides)... and I was sold. Because the grade of my neighbor's property is about 1 foot higher than mine, he suggested that installing pressure-treated mud board behind the posts would support the dirt from collapsing should it ever become an issue. I found Darren to be professional and extremely patient with me and all my questions and concerns. Come installation time, the crew was conscientious about how the new fence interacted with my neighbor's existing fence so there would be minimal gaps and spaces. They were polite and hard-working (even in 95 degree heat!) and finished the job in 4 days as promised. I appreciate that they cleaned up everything nicely.

Our initial consultation with Darren went fine. He came out to the house, looked at our gate and we discussed a replacement gate & he gave us a quote. We agreed to the price, however there was never a detailed sketch provided to show us what we would be getting for the money. We asked that he make the gate similar to the style that we currently have at the house. His guys came out [he was not there] and replaced the gate - however they did not install the handle we purchased for the gate, did not use hardware that we had approved in advance to match the rest of the hardware on the gate, the gate was too short, they drilled in the old house numbers into the post creating holes in the post we did not want and also installed a latch at the top of the gate, with a wire to open and close the gate which we did not want. We took photos of all of this, let Darren know we were not happy with numerous aspects about the gate & he said his guys would come out and fix it. They did come out and made a few small changes, which were OK - changed out the hardware, installed our handle and made the gate taller, however there were still holes all in the wood from the holes that his guys drilled. We asked for them to come and replace the posts, they did not, they used wood filler to fill in the holes which was not acceptable to us, but at that point we really didn't have any other options & could not force this company to replace our posts. A few weeks later, the posts started to crack down the middle on each side of the gate. I took photos and emailed them to Darren, asked him if that was normal, and he said that he would come look at it. Keep in mind, whenever he said he was coming out to fix something or that his guys would be coming out to fix it, we never once saw him, OR his guys coming to fix anything. And, it took days to get a reply from him. Two weeks went by and I didn't hear from him, the day he said he was coming to look at the gate, he did not show up. We ended up hiring another company to come out and finish the job, costing us even more money. He says he came and fixed it, which I think is totally untrue as we had another team of guys working at our house during the week he was supposed to come by and no one saw him. It took nearly 5 months to complete a job that should have taken one day, maybe 2-3 days max. Not only that, but the price was VERY high. We ended up paying the full amount [after they offered no discount for an awful job and us having to hire another company to fix what they did] - we have another gate company doing another job for us now [and we contacted several after being burned by these guys] and they said the work they did for that price was a joke. We were very disappointed by this company & we definitely will not be referring anyone to them OR use their services in the future. We gave them months to make things right - we don't feel that we were crazy customers or asking for anything outrageous, but when you are paying $1,100.00 for a tiny gate / to replace just the two front doors of a gate, having wood filler put into holes that your guys drilled and being totally non-communicative is just plain awful.

Our salesman met with the customer and was told that they wanted a gate to match the existing fence that was in front of the house. This makes perfect sense. We wrote a contract for the work which clearly stated that this gate would look like the existing front fence. We built the gates, and they were perfect. At this point we fulfilled our contract with this person and we should have left it at that. But the customer called and claimed that she told Darren that the gates were to match another gate on the side of the house. Darren had not been shown that gate and came to me to figure out what to do. We decided to give the customer the benefit of the doubt ( however there was no doubt ) and we built a new set of gates that matched the other gate. The work was done beautifully and even though we could not re-use the old material we did not charge anything extra. We took a loss of close to two thousand dollars by the time we were done. The new gates were worth more than the first ones but she didn't feel that she should pay more. After a couple of months went by and she hadn't paid anything for work, we threatened collection and she said she felt that she shouldn't have to pay us because of all the hassle. No good deed goes unpunished!

I called and spoke to Darren who seemed professional in the beginning. He asked me to send him my general measurements for the two ped gates we needed. I sent them on July 22nd, and as of this date I have never received a call back, email, or text. I had to call a couple times in order for him to tell me he was waiting for an estimate from his iron guy. Really??? I am so over people's unprofessionalism and inability to make a simple call back or even email.

Our apologies go out to this young lady, there are actually two problems that occured here, and it's difficult find fool proof remedies for either one. We are installers not fabricators which means we don't make the iron gates. We use local iron shops to make the gates, and we are also dependent upon them to price the items. So when we need a price we fax or email a picture or drawing and wait for a reply back. Usually we hear back by the next day. We then figure our essentials that go with it and our labor and arrive at a price. We then write a proposal and send it off to the customer by whatever means they requested. In this case email. So the first problem was we didn't get a response from the iron shop and this happened at a time of super high volume business and so it wasn't realized for a few days . We finally got the price and sent it out in an email that apparently wasn't received. So there's the second problem. Most folks these days want the bids sent by email but don't always check there spam. If we don't get a failure notice that an email is undelivered, we have no way to know it isn't. During the summer the number of customers we are sending proposals to can be extremely overwhelming. We only hear back from about 10% of those, so not hearing from most customers is normal. So we are trying to do more follow up once we've sent a bid out, and keeping closer tabs on the requests we send out to the vendors. We value every customer, and every job, and we would never purposely ignore anyone. Once again we send our apologies to this customer

We are trying to find a remedy for this situation which seems to occur every so often. That is that we meet with the customer and they ask us to send the proposal via email. During the summer we are sending out 20 or more proposals each day and setting up new appointments and we also return every phone call each day. It is impossible to follow up on every email we send to be sure it was received. We do get many calls from folks that claim it never got to them but it ends sitting in their spam folder. It is in our best interest to send the proposal out as quickly as possible and so we have policies that we follow strictly . There are a few however that never call and assume that we've decided to ignore them or that we dropped the ball. I looked this up in our "sent mail" and the proposal was sent to the email address that was provided the next day. During the summer the volume is too great for us to follow up every email sent with a phone call to see if it was received. If we don't get a failure notice we assume it's been delivered. This is the worst way to loose a customer since we did exactly what we said we would do. For anyone reading this, we pride ourselves on great customer service, we have policies that we follow to insure that proposals are sent out within two days of our meeting with our customers. There are some exceptions when we need to get prices on materials from outside sources but this is explained at the time of the meeting. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

They were very responsive. We had talked to another wrought iron fence company and the guy seemed very knowledgeable but he seemed unwilling to come out and talk to me and walk the property with me. Something seemed odd to me. We went back to Angie's List and found Foothill. We played phone tag for a little bit but then they sent someone out and we walked the property and talked about the areas. This is the second time I've used Foothill Fence. Carl and his crew did a great job. They removed my old fence and installed a capped redwood fence (92 ft long) between my property and my neighbor's property. They also added a section of double sided fencing (16 ft) at the bottom of the fence. Carl is really great to work with. We had a miscommunication about part of the work and Carl came back and fixed it with no additional charge which I really appreciated. Highly recommend Foothill Fence. This is another unfortunate loss that our dependance on technology creates. When we read the review we looked up this project and we found the emailed proposal that we had sent out to the customer the same day that we looked at the job. It was sent to the email address that the customer provided us with. When there is no notice that an email is undeliverable, there is no reason for us to not assume that it was delivered successfully. Once we looked this up we sent the customer another email to the same address and it too seems to have been delivered just fine. We also tried to contact this person by phone and they have not returned our call. We have since mailed the proposal to him, I'm sure a little too late, but we wanted him to know that we had sent it to him the same day we were there. This is very frustrating because I feel that we get blamed for not doing our job when there are two other players when people insist that we email proposals . (we never had these type of issues when we faxed or used the U.S. Mail) First there is the recipient's email account which , we have found aren't always reliable . And then the recipient also doesn't always check their spam folder which I'm sure is exactly what happened here. We try to follow up with as many customers as possible but when volume is high we can't always do so. For those who have taken the time to read this, please realize that if we have come out to look at a job, the only way for us to get the work is to get the customer the price . We would not be in business very long if we didn't. We have a strict policy to get the quote to the customer within two days of looking at the project. If for any reason you do not receive your quote please contact us, as I'm sure there is some reason for this, and it takes much less time than writing a bad review.

Maybe he did not like that I had another contractor there bidding out the same job, but both my husband and I work so I only had a small window of time to meet with prospective contractors. Not following up is just not professional in my estimation. It just wastes everyones time.
Description of Work: Darren Hicks came to bid out the job, spent a half hour with me at my house, but never followed up. I never got a bid???

There is nothing else to say except we dropped the ball on this one. There is however a reasonable explanation, and this is such a fluke that it will probably never happen again. We have taken steps to insure there won't be a next time. When we meet with a customer our estimators have a book that has the customer's info, they also make a drawing of the project and do all the cost figuring in it. In this case the estimator, Darren, had two pages stick together and the project never got figured. When we read the review and each us looked in our books we couldn't find it. It took a lot of digging to finally find what happened. Also this occurred during a week of super high volume and normally would have been noticed or remember had it not been a period that was somewhat overwhelming. We would never waste a persons time. We do see jobs from time to time that are not in our scope of work and we tell the home owners this right up front and try to help them find the right company to help them. We also are used to having multiple estimators showing at the same time, it's not uncommon. And usually this our opportunity to shine! We contacted this customer and made our humblest appologies . She was very nice and understanding , but we were a little too late to help with the project. We wish her the best of luck, and I do believe we have redeemed ourselves with her.
