Services we offer
Family Friendly plumbing, drain cleaning, heating and air conditioning service. Installation of quality tank type and tank-less water heater systems, not the junk sold at the home centers, Quality drinking and whole house water filtration systems installed. Whole house re-piping. Sewer installation and renovation.
Services we don't offer
We will not do a job that unsafe, unethical, one that our insurance company would frown on due to liability issues. Nor any thing else that is not the clients best interest, even if they ask or insist on it.
One morning the bath was clogged. I had to go to work and asked my wife to call a local plumber to support the local guy. I go to work. When I come home and ask how much it cost my wife says 500.00. One guy came out snake the main which had easy access and took less than 15 minutes and charged us 500.00 smackers. Obviously a crooked outfit. I called and complained, all they said would that they would some credit toward future service. No Thanks.
Description of Work: Cleared out main drain.

Honestly, sewer & drain cleaning is a nasty, dangerous job and companies that do it cheap are in our opinion, misguided. How much would you charge to stick you hands in some other person fecal matter and possible hazardous waste or get it all over your clothing, your face and exposed body parts? You realize that after a job like this is done, that the plumber should shower and put on a clean uniform so he doesn't track the previous clients nasty crap into the next customers home. You would appreciate that right? We have pulled all kids of disgusting things from drains. Everything from a bloody tampon, a used condom to several hypodermic needles entwined in roots that later were determined had heroin in them. Pretty much the same as dumpster diving. Gross, nasty and dangerous, right! We gave your wife a quote to do the work necessary, based on what we see as the value, the risk and reward for that particular job. She could of said no and sent us on our way and you could have called somebody else. Your wife saw the value in having us do the work. That's all. If we had been there 15 minutes or 4 hours, the price would have stayed the same. You stated that we were there 15 minutes. That is a bold face lie or after 6 years you memory is foggy. The fact is, we spent an hour and 37 minutes on your job. We have GPS records to back that statement up. We don't renegotiate price after the work is done. As you stated, we offered to offer compensate you in future work. To those of you reading this, if price is you only concern or main concern and you have no interest in the well being of our companies employees, we are not the company for you. Angies list is loaded of companies selling on price and price alone. Thanks for reading. Have a blessed day!

water heater repair

When I called the provider to schedule an appointment I told them my tankless water heater was not working. They said it would be $41 just to come out and look at it so I set up an appointment. When the contractor arrived he told me it would be $150 to diagnose a tankless water heater. I told him that was not what I was told over the phone but he insisted that was the price. I was without hot water and desperate so I agreed to this and had him look at the water heater. He gave me estimates for repairing my existing tankless water heater and for replacing the existing water heater with a conventional tank water heater. He also observed that I had a circulating pump on my water heater and said that if I replace it with a conventional tank water heater that my pump wouldn't work and I would need a new one. He told me this would cost ~$300. His estimate to repair the tankless water heater was $1434, and to replace it with a tank water heater was $3397.86. My homeowners warranty company got the estimates and insisted on sending out another provider for a second opinion. The second provider quoted $655 to repair the tankless water heater and $1200 to replace it with a tank heater. The second provider said the tankless repair was broken down as $295 for the parts and $360 for labor, and it was a 3 hour job. That amounts to about a $100/hour rate for labor. Given the price of the part, this means that Kevin Shaw plumbing was charging over $1100 for labor for a 3 hour job which is a labor rate of ~$380/hour. I had also asked the Kevin Shaw contractor what they charge to flush a tankless water heater (a recommended yearly maintenance procedure). He told me this would be 1 hour and also cost $380. (the material costs for this are trivial- just a bucket of vinegar essentially). My homeowners warranty company went with the second provider due to the cost difference. I had the second provider replace the water heater with a tank water heater. When I asked him about the circulating pump he told me what I had was fine and did not need to be replaced. I had the water heater put in ~2 weeks ago and it works just fine. Given the price difference between the two providers, one may assume there is a difference in quality. Where I live I am required to have a city inspection done of the tank water heater installation. The city inspector looked a the installation of the tank water heater done by the second provider and said it was the best installation he had ever seen. He pointed out a few things to me about how they did certain things and commented that they were done very well and that most contractors didn't bother to do these things. I am giving Kevin Shaw an F for pricing. While I expect some differences in pricing among different providers, I consider the amount of Kevin Shaw's estimates to be price gauging. Especially since I was able to find a contractor who did a very good job at only 1/3 of the price. I am giving Kevin Shaw an F for professionalism. They recommended an unnecessary and expensive replacement of a circulating pump. And, as a final note, I have now received a bill from Kevin Shaw for $150 for the tankless heater diagnosis, not the $41 I was quoted on the phone. The second provider is Western Rooter based out of Arcadia. They were nice, fairly priced and did a great job.
Description of Work: The provider came out to diagnose my tankless water heater which was not working. The provider gave me an estimate to repair it and also an estimate to replace it with a conventional tank water heater.

Hello, this is Jose, the plumber that came to your home to help you out with your problem. When you called into the office to schedule service, Customer service Representative did not know if we were coming out to look at a tankless or tank type water heater. A tankless water heater has a different diagnostic fee than a tank type water heater as it takes more to diagnose a tankless unit. Once on site, I quoted you the $150 diagnostic fee prior to starting any work. Before I started working, I explained you how we operate, what we charge and you seemed to understand and agree with what I was telling you. You advised me that you did not want to wait for your home warranty company to send someone out and that you were without hot water and desperate. You also advised me that you found us on the Rinnai website, where we are listed as an authorized service provider, offering warranty repairs for Rinnai. With your approval, I looked at the entire system and how it was installed and let you know that the installation for the most part was good. The thing I saw that was the main cause of the problem was the fact that whoever had installed the water heater installed a recirculation pump, running 24/7. A recirculation pump running 24/7 (per Rinnai) voids the warranty on a tankless unit. Here again, a non approved contractor or handyman did work on a unit he was not qualified to install. Seeing this problem, I suggested at a minimum installing a timer on the unit so that it would not run all the time. This would make the unit last longer and save money on your gas and electric bills. I took the cover off the tankless unit to troubleshoot and diagnose what the cause of the problem was. I also spoke with Rinnai about getting you a replacement part. You then asked me for quotes for repairs of the tankless unit, replacement of the tankless unit and a tank type replacement. Once I quoted you the pricing, you asked me to wait while you contacted your home warranty company. I waited for a while until you were able to get them on the phone. You then put me on the phone and asked me to explain what the water heater problems were to your home warranty company. I explained in detail what needed to be done and answered their questions. I then explained to you every step of the conversation between myself and your home warranty company. Based on all of this, you asked me to order the parts, and I did. I advised you since it was Friday, the parts would be delivered Monday. Even though I was not working on the weekend, I had given you my cell number in case you had any questions. You called me three times, that I remember. I was considerate enough to take your calls even though I was not working and getting paid. 1. You first called to let me know what the home warranty company had decided. You said that they wanted our company to proceed with the work. 2. You then called me back and said they were going to send someone else out to see if what I told them was correct. 3. You called me a third time on Sunday to tell me that your home warranty company was going to have another company do the repair. Apparently the other company gave them a similar answer regarding what was needed to be done, but offered them a lower price for the work Now let’s discuss one of your major complaints, the PUMP. I think that you might be confused as to what I found and told you in regards to the recirculation pump and the timer. I never told you that you needed to replace the pump. First off, I suggested installing an inexpensive timer to add to your recirculation system to save wear and tear on the tankless water heaters heat exchanger which had failed. I did also offer the option of a different pump system that would cost you $300 that included a timer and pump in one unit. That would have been the best solution. I was trying to save you money by suggesting adding the inexpensive timer. I also said that I would help you install it at the time of my repair of the tankless unit. Yes, I also advised you that since the existing pump was several years old, that it would be in your best interest to install a new one IF you replaced the water heater. Advising somebody and telling them they have to and two different things. Kevin Shaw Plumbing, Inc is an authorized Rinnai service provider that offers certified work on tankless water heaters. Your home warranty company chose another plumber, not an authorized Rinnai service provider, to come out and replace your tankless water heater with a tank type water heater. We provided you with a service, diagnosed your tankless problems, ordered parts, and then your home warranty company decided to go with someone another company. I’m sorry that you weren’t satisfied with the service provided. I am assuming that they put in a tank type water heater for you because your home warranty company chose to go with a cheaper solution. My question to you would be, why did the home warranty company not pay to repair or replace the tankless water heater? Instead they paid to replace a modern, energy saving, eco-friendly, better quality, longer life expectancy tankless water heater with a standard type tank type water heater. In that respect, we believe you got taken advantage of. That makes no sense. Well I guess it does, because the home warranty insurance companies’ goal is to do what is the cheapest, not pay for what is in your best interest. This is very similar to a $10 per hour insurance company telling the doctor what is best for the patient. It makes no sense. That is why we refuse to work for them. In recapping: Up to and including our last conversation, you were totally happy with how our transaction has proceeded. Just not sure why you are so upset and feel we were ripping you off. Respectfully, Jose Flores Kevin Shaw Plumbing, Inc.

Jeffrey was clean, courteous, on time, everything you expect from a service provider. We chatted about the fact that while I know my water heater will probably need replacing soon, I've just bought my house so going little by little doing the things I HAVE to do now and either fixing or shoring up everything else. He was super knowledgeable about plumbing (been in the biz almost 20 years) and gave me things to think about that no other water-person had. For example, we had contemplated getting life source water filters, which he said were great, though he asked where the life source guy had planned on placing the unit. When I told him, he said that's pretty normal, but it would also filter the water for my lawn, which actually needs the minerals that life source filters out. He suggested either installing the filter at a different spot (which would necessitate some new piping and be expensive - and of course life source guy failed to mention cause he's a sales guy, not a service provider) or getting a water softener for JUST the hot side, which would alleviate the problem totally. We also chatted about tankless water heaters. When we dug into the idea, though, we realized it would be far too much work and money to do that? I'd have to reroute a gas line, install another electrical outlet outside, etc. we also discussed the fact that even though it would be a "gas" tankless, it would have to have electricity to run the unit itself, which could present a problem because every so often my area gets blackouts due to wind storms that even a battery back up just won't be able to handle. so we instead decided to get quotes on a regular 'ol water heater. The quote wasn't the cheapest by any means and I'm going to get other quotes. That said, I'd TOTALLY trust Jeffrey to do any plumbing work I need. Oh! he also mentioned that the co has 3 trucks and guys, so they're available 24/7. some other companies say they are (and I'm sure try to be) though if you've got 3 trucks, you're more likely to get service when you need it. Hopefully my water heater will last another couple years and I won't have to deal with it, but at least I have a backup plan in place should I.
Description of Work: I got a big deal for a heater flush because my OLD OLD OLD water heater was making some terrible rackets at night. It also came with a whole house inspection, which he did, but we kind of laughed about it because the house is a flip and all the plumbing (except that water heater, did I mention it's old?) was brand new.

[member name removed], thanks for honest reply. I am glad to hear that your loved the service. Yes everybody says they provide great service, we make it our mission to deliver on the promise. As far as water heater prices, our prices included parts and labor warratny with only the best quality water heaters and parts to install them. If you buy a 6 year warranty water heater from us, that is totally inclusive. If the water heater fails on the 364th day of the 5th year, we would install a new one at absolutely no cost to you. I know of only one other company in the great Los Angeles area that provides that level of warranty. Most plumbing companies and for sure the water heater only companies will tell you to call the manufacturer after 90 days. Again thanks. If you need us, we are here for you. Kevin Shaw

Jeff the plumber who came out for the service was great. Explained everything to me. He gave me my options for future problems - probably will need new main drain. 60+ year old house - so I'm not surprised. I'd definately use this service again & would probably request Jeff, he knows his stuff. Mar2014: I had problems with my gas, needed a new earthquake value, etc. Jeff came out again & fixed me right up. As soon as i realized I needed a plumber - went right for the card on the frig. These guys know what they are doing.

The receptionist I spoke to really made the company seem very professional and competent. We purchased the deal for installing the emergency shut valve but also wanted to have our washer and dryer installed in the garage. The receptionist said we would be given a quote and if we like the price they would do the work right there and then. But when the worker came out, we were told he wanted his boss to give them estimate. He didn't feel qualified. We have just purchased our home and was doing a lot of remodeling. I thought was going to be able to cross to big jobs off my to do list. I was disappointed the worker sent to do our job wasn't as knowledgable as I was lead to believe he would be. I don't remember if they ever called back to have his boss give an estimate. The work they did was good. I guess I can't really test it until there is an emergency. They just promised more than they could deliver.

It went fine. It took a few days because of the need to figure out what I needed, and not just replace what I had with something similar. But, Keving researched my unusual heater, which also draws on the hot water, and figured out how to get me the volume of hot water I need.

The inspection was part of the annual club program they offer. We then had a list of things we needed done. Jeffrey had been out to our house before so they sent again. They like to keep the same guy on your projects as he is familiar with your stuff. Jeffrey always dresses professionally in a polo shirt and wears booties when he enters your home. Very pleasant to work with. The first time he came out for our garbage disposal he quickly figured out it was not a plumbing issue but an electrical issue and recommended an electrician for us to call. Really appreciated his honesty. This time out he did not have the kit in the truck for our shower, so he scheduled an appointment for the next day and came back out to install it. He has always been right on time, within the early part of the time window arranged. During the inspection he also looked at our furnace and AC unit, which is 30 years old and needs to be replaced. They have recently gotten into the heating and AC business as well. The next day Jeffrey had Kevin Shaw himself come out to take a look at our unit so they could give us an accurate assessment and estimate. Really impressed that Kevin made the effort to come out himself and take a look.
Description of Work: Annual inspection, which included checking water pressure and leaks on toilets, faucets, etc. Had them replace two toilet flushing mechanisms, a sink stopper that would not close properly, and a shower handle that was stripped. Their pricing is probably a little on the high side, but well worth it for the professionalism and quality work.

I read online where several people felt mislead in the price they were charged and I would have to say that while I think the people who came were very polite the reviews I read were right on. I was home, but working. I should have been more attentive to the work they were actually doing and stayed with them while they worked. While one man was already working on the leak, the other worker was using a tool to detect the leak. This was obviously a second thought. It made no sense and they charged me almost $400 for this. They left major gapping holes that they covered with red plastic. They also commented on the cars in my garage and asked if they were for sale. I will not use this company again.

Professional, polite and friendly plumber arrived on time. As a first time homeowner I was quite surprised at the high costs of the estimates ($3100, $2400 and $2100 for three levels of service and warranty) but since this appeared to be a reputable local plumber I agreed. I had to vigorously negotiate keeping my existing and functional disposal unit, for which I was given a $700+ discount (!). No estimate was given for time needed or an hourly rate as all work was done on a "per bid" quote. After the kitchen sink repairs (and before returning to install the bathroom sink) he had spent less than 6 hours (including his lunch). Allowing for a generous $400 for parts I calculated that his $2000 labor bill amounted to $250 per hour for service; at least twice what typical rates should be for even expensive plumbers in my area.

We found the kitchen drain leaking from duct tape. We recommended to install new brass drain work, new shut off valves, under the sink, and also for the water filtration system. We installed a new kitchen faucet, installed a air gap for the dishwasher for the California code, installed new sink hole cover. We helped the owner removed the toilet from the bathroom. We then made a second visit on Saturday to install a owner supplied vanity cabinet, faucet, p trap and drain line 2 new shut off valves and new supply lines and installed the cabinet, the sink and faucet. We did all of this work for the sum of $2449.00. The total of the 2 days was 9 hours of work. We supplied many of the parts which we stand behind for 1 year plus a 1 year labor warranty. I think this client got a very fair deal. Thanks for the opportunity to reply.

i was happy with their service even though plumbing turned out to not be my problem. these guys are very professional -- booties before they enter the house, they suit up to go in the crawlspace, etc. you pay a full price for the great quality but they don't nickle and dime you once they are on the job.

The work performed was fine. They cleared the line of some debris and we had water pressure restored in the kitchen - although $142 seemed expensive. While they were out, we asked them what they would charge to change out one 8" spread bathroom faucet. The rep told us the price was in the $900 range but that he could quote us $480!! Needless to say, we found another plumber to do the work for less than half of the $480 quoted. We wanted to alert any Angie's List members to Kevin Shaw's outrageous prices. They pride themselves on providing "Nordstrom" like service (and their reps are very polite, neat & clean, they even put booties on their shoes when entering your home), but they do so at a price that's 4-5 times (or more) than reasonable. They won't even come out for less than their "service charge" - so that estimate for the faucet would not have been free, had they not already been out here on another matter.
Description of Work: Cleared blockage from kitchen sink. Gave estimate to do some other work.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know what you thought of our service. I am not sure what part of the price you found problematic. I know that they price charged for the service provided that day was in-line with other premium service providers. All of our costs are based on what our accountant says it costs us to provide the level of service we do, make a fair profit and be there for our clients the next time they need our services.. We make no apologies for that. Yes we are more than most, but less than some. No different than if you were shopping insurance, a hair salon, attorney etc. I hope you understand my explanation and will take it into consideration next time you need our services. As far as a faucet replacement, there are thousand to choose from. Most of the products we stock on our trucks are of high quality with lifetime warranties.

Anthony came out to look at the water heater. After some checking, he indicated that the water heater had failed and required replacement. I was shocked by the estimate for warranty replacement of $1437. Without the warranty, it would have been $2126. The original install was about $1100. I didn't want to wait for another day without hot water so I authorized Anthony to go ahead. However, after discussing with my wife and reconsidering, I decided to stop the work in progress. Anthony had been on the job for about an hour for troubleshooting and draining the water in the heater when I told him to stop, and the bill came to $342. Anthony was very polite and nice about the whole thing and the office had called several times to confirm the appointment and the time Anthony would arrive, but the price was outrageous for both the water heater installation/replacement and for an hour worth of work.
Description of Work: My Bradford White water heater with a 6-year warranty started to leak after 5 years. Kevin Shaw was the original installer. I didn't want to use Kevin Shaw because I thought they gouged me the first time and told me Bradford White was the best in the industry. But the unit was still under warranty so I called Kevin Shaw back for warranty repair or replacement.

Excellent. It was easy to schedule the repair over the phone. Plumber was on time and very polite. This company may be more expensive than others, but it is very professional and appears to have very skilled workers.
