He was very professional, was down to earth and he recommended some things typically that would save me costs but also would improve appearance of the job.
Description of Work: I got a quote from Tatom Flooring for his labor opening between the living room a kitchen and also there were some spaces in the house throughout that we had changed some configurations so he was touching in some of those places to the existing wood flooring. It was also for refinishing of the flooring.

Description of Work: I had additional wood floors laid in my bedrooms March 2013. They all cupped. I've never had a problem with the wood floors I had laid in the kitchen and den 26 years ago. Mel did stand by his work. He re-sanded and re stained the floors. I was stuck with once again removing everything from all floors and a big dusty clean up. I've yet to place my things back. I want to make sure I don't damage them by putting rugs down. I was told he would not move furniture or help with the. I was also told there is a 50/50 chance of woods floors cupping. I do not believe that is true. I am very grateful he re-did the floors and they do look beautiful. It was just miserable to have to go through the smell and work again. This to will pass.

Mr. Tatom always kept me updated. He responded quickly to any of my questions and concerns. He showed up when he said he would. I live in a small area and when I began asking around for a good wood floor installer and Mel Tatom was the name always given. He does beautiful work and I have already recommended him to anyone I know looking into wood floors. Mel is true to his word. He came when he said he would and I always told me when he would be returning. He treated me as if my time was just as important as his own. When the job was finished I notice a small problem with a door not opening and clearing the wood threshold. Mel came right out and solved the problem. Mel is very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. I would not hesitate to highly recommend Mel Tatom. I feel we are very fortunate to have a man of his caliber in our small area. I'm hoping he can and will find the time to sand and stain my deck.
Description of Work: I already had white oak #1 wood floors installed in my kitchen and den approx. thirty years ago. I wanted to have the same quality floors installed down the hall and into three bedrooms. Mel did his best matching the color of the old wood floors. I originally wanted them in my step down living room. Since the living room was the only room with concrete Mel took his time explaining my fabricated wood options. I opted to stay with carpet.

One of the first things that impressed us was Mel's initial consultation. We had three different companies come out and he, by far, took the most time and asked the most questions-many of which we hadn't even thought about. His measurements were precise and he showed real insight into what we could and couldn't do with our floors. We had other friends who had their floors finished recently and when we told them we were thinking of Mel, they said that he had done theirs and that he was a perfectionist who worked quickly and completely. Seemed like a great recommendation to us, especially considering these two are both engineers well known for their own precision. After that, Mel showed up when he was supposed to and did the work in the time he said he would at the price we were quoted and cleaned up everything as well. Can't ask for much better than that, right?
Description of Work: Mel took out the carpeting that we had, stupidly, installed in our dining room years ago and matched the previously installed hardwood perfectly. He also put in a border of walnut which really set the whole thing off wonderfully. We pulled the carpeting from the living room and Mel installed the same hardwood in there. We have a curved brick hearth for our wood stove and he made the curve of the flooring without a hitch. In addition, the carpeted stair was reworked with solid oak which Mel worked in his shop and installed. Everything matches really well.

He replaced two of the boards with what appears to be white oak flooring directly in front of the cabinets, in a place that is very noticeable. The rest of the flooring are golden oak boards. They all match except these two. He became angry and said he bent over backwards to help us. I asked him to replace them, he said he can’t do that, he has already ripped them out. He said after years, it will get better. He has to come in and put the last coat of poly on it tomorrow. I have a contractor coming over tonight to look at the boards and give me his opinion. The craftsmenship is beautiful, it's just that these two boards do not match the rest of the flooring.

Response from Tatom Flooring
I did replace two boards that were water damaged, the existing floors were old and the finish had ambered considerably. I explained to the customer that without sanding the entire floor the new wood would be lighter. I took extra care to eliminate dust and finish fumes as her husband was ill. She said she was happy with the work that it looked excellent but at the end of the job refused to pay me.
