Jose Mendez Tile

Even though we had to call him twice and he missed the first appt (called to inform us), all subsequent times he and his workers were responsive, punctual and professional. The main tiler, Jesus was extremely conscientious, trustwothy and neat. The person who cut and installed granite countertop was not as careful w/his measurements and installation. All were extremely courteous.

It looks beautiful and Jose and his crew did an incredible, meticulous, careful job and they did it all on a tight deadline. I can not recommend him highly enough! I have recommended him to all of my friends.

The project proceeded quickly from his initial estimate. I accepted, he started the next day, and finished the day after that. Done and done.

Juan was a pleasure to work with. From the start he was responsive and punctual. We initially called for a quote on installation of a pre-fab granite countertop. After looking at the existing cabinets he gave us some counsel on whether we should replace them. We considered the pros and cons he presented and ended-up replacing the cabinets. Even though this put-ff our need for his services on the back burner a few weeks, Juan was accomodating in coordinating his schedule with ours. Once he started on the task of removing the old floor tile, he ran into a problem in that underneath was linoleum -- the sheet kind, which used much glue when installed. Removing the tile was a breeze compared to that! Juan cleans as he goes which is extremely helpful in keeping the dust and mess to a minimum. Juan had an associate work with him on the countertop and it looks spectacular! Better than we had envisioned. He even made an additional top out of the excess granite for a bar cabinet, matched the existing bullnose perfectly. Now we are thinking of adding an island and if we do, we know who to call for the countertop. Our next projects are two bathrooms for which we want tiled floors and shower enclosures. We plan on calling Juan for those jobs as well.

Jose did a terrific job, and we couldn't be happier with his work. He was early every day, kept in very good touch over the course of the week, and was very reasonable in terms of price. He told us how much tile we needed to buy, and which particular pieces we'd need for the trim and edges, and did a fine job installing it. He replaced everything that he had taken out, cleaned up after himself every day, and did a great job.

Jose and his assistant did a wonderful job. The shower was not square, but he used quite a bit of extra concrete to make it square. He also inlaid a row of 1"1" glass, and made sure that the pattern on the tile matched (I did not even realize that there was a pattern until he pointed it out). We needed the job done in quickly, and he was able to fit it into his schedule. He also came back and sealed the tile. I highly recommend him.

As usual, Jose did a great job. We couldn't find bricks that matched, so he cut all om brick down so they would match and take up less space. My only complaint was that he removed the bricks in late August, and did not return to lay the bricks until January. He did say that he would not be able to get to it for three weeks, but it ended up taking over three months. I only followed-up with him once because I was so busy, and it was not too big a deal for me because I was swamped,

Overall I am very happy with how the tile came out. It looks beautiful. He is very detail oriented and a clean worker. If there was anything that I was not completely happy with, his answer was, "Don't worry, I'll fix it." He was a pleasure to work with and I would recommend him and use him again.

Jose responded within hours of my email with availability to come out for a quote the next day. I did some consulting with other contractors about other work and they said that tile should be done afterward. I asked Jose if he could come later -- he said to contact him whenever the other work was done, and sure enough, as soon as I was ready for him, he was there the next day. He showed up on time, took accurate measurements and coached me on what kind of tile to buy. I liked him from the very beginning due to his friendly personality and apparent knowledge about how he would approach the job. I got two other bids, one higher, one lower -- I got the best feeling from Jose though and he was willing to match the lower bid. He estimated the job would take 5 days. Work started the next day; he and his partner made good, steady progress throughout the week. My wife and I were very impressed with the attention to detail he paid -- he did things like making small cuts in the tiles in the kitchen to thread around the plumbing sticking out of the floor, then sealing the cut area with the piece that was cut out. This would normally be covered up by a cabinet, never to be seen again, but I think you can really tell that he cares about the quality of his work from small details like this. The difference between getting a pro and doing it yourself can be huge: I don't know how to lay tile in a way that levels a floor, how to achieve good spacing, and how to perfectly choose grout color. Jose can do all these things. When he completed the job, my wife asked him if he could come back later to haul away the demoed old stuff; he agreed to come the following weekend for it. We had already paid him in full at this point, so he really had no incentive to come back...but he did, all the way from Lynwood. The whole job was completed very well, I am absolutely satisfied. Jose is a great guy and I will definitely contract him in the future.

The price was too high. So I told him to go back and reconsider the price and to let me know what he could come back with about lowering the cost. He said he had to talk to someone higher up than he was. I didn't quite know what he meant. I didn't know if he meant he was going to go to church or pray or what. But he did say he was going to talk to someone. I finally asked who he going to talk to and he told me it was a contractor. Its been two weeks and I haven't heard from him yet.

From the initial estimate until the job was done, Mr. Mendez and his crew were very professional and did an excellent job. I was very impressed with their skill and attention to detail. Although the job came in a little over estimate in both time and money, this was due to additional repairs that were discovered to be necessary after the demolition of the old tile. The situation was explained clearly to me and I had no problem with the additional work that was obviously needed. Although only a couple of months have passed, the quality of the work appears to be excellent and holding up well. Also, I would like to mention that Mr. Mendez and his assistant Mr. Villatoro left a clean work site every night, which was very much appreciated.

Jose was very pleasant and professional. The job went very well initially in the larger bathroom. He also completed the smaller bathroom, and the tile work was very good. During his work with us, he had to complete other jobs at other locations because the workers he hired for the other locations did not complete the jobs correctly. This caused him to pull away from our job. He has a great company, and I would suggest he hire better workers with the same work ethic that he has.

Jose reviewed the project and provided a detailed quote of all work required to complete it. He initiated a meeting with the interior designer who had planned the tile work to ensure that he had a complete understanding of her vision. They discussed the project in detail and he identified possible problem areas and they worked out solutions at the outset. He maintained close contact with me throughout the work. He came to work when he said he was going to except on one occasion, and he called to inform me of that absence ahead of time. Jose takes great pride in his work and did a beautiful job. The price he quoted was very reasonable. He is a good communicator, and as previously indicated, he identifies potential problems before they become actual problems. That was a refreshing change of pace! In the "questions" section, when I say "I got more than my money's worth".....I mean that we got peace of mind. That is worth more than I can accurately express!

We had contacted Jose based on the glowing reviews posted here on Angie's List. We contacted him on a Monday and he was available for work the next day. He quoted $500 and 2 days for a 25 square foot backsplash, this was extremely reasonable compared to a few other quotes we had received. Unfortunately, we could not have him start until Wednesday but we were looking forward to having him do the work. That wouldn't happen, we received a call at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night from someone other than Jose saying he had an emergency and would not be available in the morning. I asked if we could count on him coming by the end of the week, or the following week at the latest and the person on the line said they would have to get back to me the following day. I received a call two days later from another tile contractor that Jose had passed me off to. We ended up using this man and he did a great job and honored Jose's price. The perplexing and in my opinion, unprofessional matter is that Jose didn't ever call himself to give us an explanation. Also, from what I gathered from the contractor who replaced him his "emergency" seemed to be other jobs, whether that means a job that went over time schedule or a job that came up that was bigger than ours, I'll never know. I'm giving him an "F" for punctuality and professionalism but an overall "C" for having the decency to pass us on to someone else.

Jose performed the job with care and hard work, taking great pride in his work. He completed the work in a timely manner, and was a pleasure to work with. The installation required multiple steps and visits, and Jose completed each with care and without taking shortcuts. Our floor was in poor shape, and he spent considerable time shoring it up before installing the mosaic floor so it would not crack. He had great aesthetic input in working out the details, and was easy to work with on the details. I am an architect, and am a stickler when it comes to detail.

He ended up taking the tiles to clean them, and then changed his estimate. I told him that was not what we agreed to, and he kept the tile and didn't do the work. He then took another job for three weeks, and in the meantime he left my shower completely undone, forcing me to hire someone else. I also didn't have a shower because of his poor service.

I have no complaints. He showed up on time and was ready to work. He knew exactly what to do. I was very pleased with the results. The whole thing was quick and easy.

This was my first experience with Angie's List. I chose Jose because of his recommendations as well as his obvious knowledge, excitement about doing the job, and his enthusiasm about his past jobs (he showed me fantastic pictures that he had captured on his personal phone/camera). He was working on a huge job, but did squeeze us in, in a timely manner. He showed up on time and brought a couple of very experienced guys with him. Jose is easy to be around, works hard, and is very careful about his work. The job was more difficult that any of us had thought, mainly because the custom (diamond shape) tiles were not all exactly the same size. That makes placement a bit more complicated. We appreciated his experience at this point! Also, I wanted some tiny glass tiles here and there. Lots of intricate cutting. They did a great job and I got just the look that I had wanted. Jose was very careful about laying tile out on the floor showing me examples of the details. For example, I wanted a different look over my sink. He made sure I was happy with the layout before he began. I was very unsure about the grout color that I wanted. He listened to me go back and forth over the shades. It turned out that the shade he had suggested early on, was the one we chose! I am so thrilled with my kitchen! The price was very close to the original bid, going only slightly over what he estimated. I know he used a bit more time on my kitchen than he had expected, due to the tiles.

The job went smoothly. Jose told us it would take two days, and it did. He arrived on time in the morning, and worked straight through until about 5:30 for the two days. I do not believe he even took a break. Sadly, it was really hot the two days he worked, and our place does not have A/C, but Jose worked diligently. Everything turned out great. We got exactly what we wanted at a reasonable price. Jose does great work!

Jose was happy to help and we booked a time for him to come. He showed up with his uncle (on time) and it took him two-four hour days to replace most of it. He was polite, professional and knew exactly what he was doing. I have learned that replacing tile is difficult and time consuming -- an art, really -- but Jose was just great. Plus he was reasonably priced. I would not hesitate to call him again.

I am delighted with the work performed. Jose did a fabulous job and I think he went over and above expectations. He had some great suggestions for the layout of tile and wall niche in the new shower surround as well as the idea of using tile as the baseboard in both bathrooms something I hadn t even thought of even though I ve seen and admired it in the past at other locations! After the initial installation of the shower surround, I noticed some tiles were chipped and after pointing them out he cheerfully replaced them with no problem. He worked long and hard doing everything and did a particularly spectacular job on the wall niche -- it looks incredible! He was on time every morning and cleaned up every day. I will use him again and highly recommend him to anyone.

I called Jose for an estimate. He came to my house exactly at the time he said he would. He gave me an estimate and we fixed a date and time when he could start the job. Once again Jose came at the exact time he promised to start the job. Finally to apply the sealer, once again he was prompt and came at the time promised. Jose is very professional and knowledgeable about his work. He takes pride in his work and makes sure that he does a good job. I am going to have him install tile in my bathroom next month.

Jose returned my call very promptly and gave a rough range estimate of the work based upon my description. Jose communicates very well. Because of the unanticipated work for the step, it did come in a little more. We picked the tile and Jose and his 2 employees transported the materials to my home. They started the job on Monday morning and finished it up on Thursday. Monday, they had to do a bit of prep work to remove carpet glue from the concrete surface. Because we chose slate, they were very careful to put variation in how they laid the tile. The result is a great mosaic effect. The quality of the work is FANTASTIC! They were very, very detailed in their work and did a complete job, even where the cuts were odd and difficult. They were very thorough and the attention to detail was great. The guys cleaned up after themselves and were very neat and extremely courteous. I will definitely be using Jose again and recommend him to others.
