Hi! I'm name is Steve Marshall my tree care company is called The Urban Lumberjack. I'm an ISA (International Society of Arborists) Certified Arborist with 31 years experience in the Southern California tree community.
Speaking frankly, I believe that more harm is caused to trees by excessive or needless pruning than is caused by neglect. We strive to give you an honest opinion of what is in your tree's best interests - which is often to leave them alone - and to provide quality service for a competitive price when attention to your trees is called for. My crew and I pride ourselves on leaving your property cleaner than when we arrived as well as taking the time necessary to treat your trees to first-class care.
We work throughout Los Angeles county and the surrounding areas. Please check my website at TheUrbanLumberjack.com for more information on our services and philosophy of tree care - and thank you for considering The Urban Lumberjack.
PS - I'm now also TRACE certified, which is an acronym for Tree Risk Analysis and Comprehensive Evaluation. This certification is rewarded to arborists who undergo an extensive program and pass a rigorous test demonstrating proficiency in recognizing and analyzing signs of structural hazards in trees and is a right handy thing to have.

Description of Work: I contacted Steve Marshall (Urban Lumberjack) to inspect the trees on a property I am in process of buying. I wanted to make sure the trees were healthy as they add a lot of value to the property. Steve was fantastic. He is highly qualified, has all the right certifications you would look for, and extremely knowledgeable. He confirmed the trees were all healthy, but also gave me a lot of information on how to care for the trees go forward and what to watch out for.

Description of Work: Over the phone consultation on ailing avocado, which let to a referral to a specialist. After I consulted with specialist, Urban Lumberjack came in and removed a lot of deadwood from my tree. From what I can tell, they did a fine job. They didn't remove some new growth from the trunk area, which I was told had to be cut. A simple job that I will have to do. | | | | |

I appreciate the high letter grades and kind review from this client. We left the growth on the trunk that she references intentionally - this is an ailing and desperately under-foliated specimen and cutting off viable green leaves, wherever their location on the tree, is not in the best interest of a tree in this condition. It'd be like putting a patient in Critical Care on a starvation diet - this is not the time for such measures. These leaves can always be removed later if the tree stages a recovery and I will so inform this valued client.

Description of Work: Steve and his team were incredible. Steve came out to our house after prompt and efficient scheduling, and not only knew exactly what we needed without even telling him, but offered up his considerable expertise for other issues in our yard -- other trees, suggestions for planting, and even what to do about damage to our roof. He reminded me of Sherlock Holmes, how he could see and evaluate everything at a glance of which we had no idea. After giving us a very, very good estimate (we thought it would cost twice as much), his team, led by the wonderful Francisco, were out at our house within the week. They trimmed back two neighbors' trees that were trespassing on our property. We had originally chosen to have work done because the birds were becoming a nuisance, but when we stepped out after they were done (within only a few hours), we were stunned at how GORGEOUS the job was. Not only was the job undetectable, but the light was shining through for the first time in years. It was beautiful! Steve is a true professional and a skilled artisan, and you'll never find anyone more passionate, knowledgeable, or respectful. Thank you!!!

There was no supervision of the workers. The guy is really a go-to kind of person and it was easy to make an appointment. He sent the crew out and didn't tell them what to do and they totally hacked up the trees. It was not good.

Response from The Urban Lumberjack
Clearly this lady was unsatisfied with our work and no reputable firm welcomes such outcomes. Her comments are clearly unfavorable. It is curious, however, that her graded evaluations are all either A or B grades. What is one to make of that? When a client expresses concerns my first response is "when can I come over to make things right?" After 3 such calls to this client I finally got a response which waived me off. For the record, we do not "hack" trees - my firm prides itself on our professional competence. Furthermore, it is inaccurate to claim, in reference to my crew, that I "sent them out and didn't tell them what to do" In fact, I started their work day for this client as I usually do by meeting my team at the jobsite and instructing my crew foreman Francisco - 16 years with my firm and a fine arborist in his own right - what was required. I did not see my client that morning - it was early and I assume she was yet abed - but I most certainly instructed my men in what to do. I am sorry that this client was so dissatisfied. No firm can satisfy everyone but if I am not permitted to revisit the worksite and discuss issues with a client who has concerns my options for rectification are very limited. Yet that does not alter the fact that this client felt ill-served and that is wrong. Hers is not the outcome we look for and if you will read the reports others have posted you will see that their evaluations have been quite the opposite of this client's. Look, it is important to me that my men and I do fine work. It is important to me that my men perform well and that my clients feel that they have received full value for their investment of resources. On the rare occasion that difficulties arise I will make every effort to put things to right.

I called Steve Marshall at the Urban Lumberjack, along with two other companies, to get bids on the above referenced tree trimming job at a rental property we own. Steve answered the phone and told me that he would come out and take a look at the trees for an estimate. I asked him to give me separate estimates for each of the trees, so I could select how much of the work to have done at this time. He called me back the next day after visiting the site and gave me a detailed estimate. Steve is an ISA certified arborist who really knows his stuff. He also would make a great teacher because he was very good at explaining what was going on with the trees. Some people may have found his details "too much information", but I actually thought he was quite interesting. One situation we encountered was that the California Live Oak is a protected tree and there are severe restrictions on cutting them down (permit required, which is difficult to obtain) or even trimming them. Steve explained that he was not allowed to touch any branches larger than 3" around and that they are not allowed to trim back more than 25% of the tree's canopy. The other company I received a bid from told me the same story. However, Steve felt he could stay within these restrictions and still make my insurance company happy. His price was the best of the two bids I received (the third company never called back) so we scheduled a date for the work later that week. Steve had two workers on site at the appointed time and they worked from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. on the three trees. They cleaned up well after the work was finished. I asked Steve if he could trim more off the Oak tree since some branches were still over the roof, but he said he couldn't without violating the city restrictions. He said as long as no branches are closer than 5-6 feet above the roof that the insurance company should be satisfied. (The second insurance inspection has not yet been scheduled, so I can't tell you if this will pass muster with the insurance company or not at this writing. Fingers crossed.) The cost for the Oak trimming was $85, the larger deodar cypress was $385 and the smaller deodar cypress cost $245, for a total of $715. There was an additional landfill disposal charge of $43.18. He told me about the landfill charge after the initial bid when I told him he had the job. I didn't like that he tacked on an additional fee after the bid, but he explained that he only passes along his actual cost, which he doesn't know until he gets to the landfill. He gave me a typical range of $20-$45 and he was right on. Since he was still lower than the other bid even with this additional charge, I was happy. I would definitely use The Urban Lumberjack again for any tree trimming or removal jobs.
Description of Work: I needed to have a California Live Oak tree trimmed back so that branches were not over the roof, for insurance requirements. Also had them trim lots of dead branches from two large deodar cypress trees, some of which were hanging over the driveway and could have fallen on parked cars.

Steve was extremely responsive to phone calls and questions and seemed very knowledgeable about trees. He gave us some tips to help us decide when we needed to trim again. We would definitely hire him in the future.
Description of Work: We have many trees in our back and front yeard. Steve Marshall gave advice about which trees needed trimming, the kind of trimming that would be most beneficial for the health of the trees, and his crew performed the work.

I called Steve to ask him to look at a jacaranda tree in my backyard. He was very polite on the phone and said he would have to get back to me as to whether he could come on Wed., Thurs. or Friday that week. Wed. afternoon I had not heard back so I called him and we scheduled an appointment. He arrived right on time and while I asked him to look at a particular tree, he evaluated all the trees and landscaping on my property. When we got to the jacaranda, he said he thought it just needed pruning (I was afraid it was dying and would need to be removed), however after looking at it for a few minutes, he said he recommended that I call National Arbor to evaluate the tree, because he wasn't sure about its health. He didn't charge me anything for coming out. Great service!

I requested that he come out and quote on trimming a sizeable pine tree at my mother's house. He was extremely knowledgeable, exceedingly professional and very, very pleasant. He answered numerous questions about the pine tree as well as a few other trees on the property, and gave a very reasonable quote for trimming the pine. He suggested that December or January would be the best time to trim the tree to lessen the possibility of destructive bugs attacking the tree after it was trimmed.
Description of Work: On this visit he provided only a quote on trimming a pine tree.

I had a great experience with The Urban Lumberjack. Stede came out within a day of my call. He provided detailed information about two pine trees that are leaning near my bedroom. I wanted his opinion as to if the trees needed to be removed, supported, trimmed. He gave detailed information about what exactly should be done. It was pouring rain when he arrived and he toured our property and even climbed our steep hillside. He charged nothing and was at our house for at least 45 minutes. He was very knowledgeable about all of our trees and advised about necessary trimming and best times to do it. I will definitely hire him when we need to do the work.

After our recent windstorm, a HUGE branch fell off a 60-foot sycamore and he removed it. After the rains, another branch cracked but was being held up by other branches. He came and gave an estimate for trimming the entire tree, and told us to call when we made a decision. The next evening, we noticed that the branch had begun to slip. We have 4 small kids and pets, as well, and when I left him a message about the movement of the broken branch, he called back within a couple hours, saying that he'd rearranged his schedule and his crew would arrive at 7 am. And they did. The work he does is based on his extensive knowledge of and concern for the health of trees, and it's performed neatly and safely, and cheaper than the other people I called. I have another tree that needs removing, and he bid $780, and another tree service I called bid $1680 for the same job.
Description of Work: This is the third assignment Steve has performed for us. His first was to inspect our property before we bought it -- specifically, the trees that are a huge part of the yard. The second job was to trim some trees for light so that we could grow a lawn, and then he removed the hugest branch that fell into our yard during a windstorm. Wait, that's three already. I guess it's four.
