Description of Work: Plaster / Paint Since buying our first home 4 months ago we've had an endless stream of workers, contractors, and laborers come in and out for various services. As any new home owner knows, it's a huge hassle all around. I contacted Mike to take over from a prior contractor who completely dropped the ball in every regard. Mike came on a weekend to do the estimate. Showed up on time the following day. Had a nice, super NON shady assistant. Completed all work %100 on time. %100 perfectly, %100 reasonable price. And was %100 great to work and deal with. If all my house work interactions were this uncomplicated and pleasant it'd make life that much easier. A+ all around.

The overall job was excellent. Workers were professional keeping neat, covering the area and cleaning up when the work was done each day. The matching of existing plaster to new work was excellent. The house has a unique exterior texture which was matched perfectly. An excellent choice of contractor, I'd hire again any time. All expectations met and exceeded.

I decided to open a wall in my home when I discovered dry wall that was clearly wet and soft. Mike and his two sons removed the dry wall and insulation and found mold attached to the building paper and studs. The project was a bit beyond his knowledge level of mold, windows, and waterproofing. Mike removed some building paper that was moldy and wet, however now I have no waterproofing in parts of my wall. Mike wanted to use bleach on the mold, which I am told is not used anymore. He did find two potential leaks. Mike works hard and is very friendly.
Description of Work: Mike removed dry wall and insulation from a wall with a leak from the outdoors. He performed a spray test to determine the source of the leak. He put up plastic sheeting around the wall when he discovered mold.

Response from The Plaster Master
On the initial meeting, the Member showed Mike the damaged area under the second floor bedroom window. It was explained that a water test should be conducted to find the source of the water leaks by opening up the wall and spraying water around the window. The Member said an inspector/contractor had already been there and after testing indicated that there was no mold. After a rain storm the Member called Mike and said the window was leaking and to come and find the source of the water. Mike covered the room very carefully and removed the saturated drywall around the window which revealed water-saturated wood and active mold and after conducting the water test found 2 separate water leaks. It was quite obvious that the building paper was not water-proof due to its deteriorated condition. Mike explained that he would spray the affected areas with bleach to kill the active mold but it was only a temporary remedy while the wall was left open. Mike removed the debris, cleaned up, tented and sealed the affected areas with plastic. The leaks were from above the window at the gutter/roof line and below the window which was installed a few years earlier. Mike could do no more than to reveal the condition of the framing/wall and the sources of the water leak.

Communication was thorough and friendly form the beginning. Took us a couple weeks to get together on a start date for the work --but everything worked out. Mike and his sons worked hard for a full day each day and cleaned up the site at the end of each day. Very professional. They did an outstanding job matching the texture of both the exterior and interior existing walls.
Description of Work: Mike and his crew removed 3 thru-the-wall air conditioners from my 1930's house and filled in the resultant holes in the walls and re-stuccoed the exterior walls. They also repaired and plastered a large hole in a bathroom ceiling and replastered another 2'x3' area. In addition they repaired several large settlement cracks in another exterior wall.

Our 1940s home has PLASTER walls - NOT drywall. Nonetheless, I almost opted not to use the services of a plasterer in favor of having our painting crew address the cracks and stuff prior to painting. But in the aftermath of some electrical work & upgrades, there were several small-to-large holes in our walls where the electricians needed access, so I called the PLASTER MASTER, which I found on Angie's List. Virginia Casas, who fields/returns most of the calls and schedules appointments for her husband, Michael, was unfailingly pleasant, and very prompt in responding to VM messages. Michael and Virginia arrived promptly for the estimate appointment after work one evening, and explained exactly what expertise he brings to plastering, and what the job would entail. He gave us an approximate estimate on the spot, and Virginia followed up the next morning with a written estimate. Given that our painters were scheduled to begin the following week, Michael was able to accommodate us by beginning the day after we received the written estimate and gave the go-ahead. Michael & his crew arrived promptly, and immediately began covering all our furniture, and covering all floor surfaces with "tacky" black paper to help catch/contain the plaster dust. Every member of his crew (which included his two sons) was industrious and respectful, and set to work. Once we saw for ourselves how painstakingly they approached what appeared to be a simple crack in the wall or ceiling, we were DOUBLY glad we entrusted the repair of our beautiful old plaster walls to a PLASTER expert (Michael learned the craft from his father-in-law). Our walls are constructed of plasterboard, covered by 1/2" of hand-applied plaster. Since Michael knows his trade, he was able to effect beautiful repairs with the appropriate materials and craftsmanship. The job took 1? days, and ended up about $450 less than what was originally estimated (Michael works on a time-&-materials basis). By the time Michael and his crew had cleaned up the second day, Virginia had sent a final billing via e-mail - VERY efficient!! If we EVER have any more plaster work to be done - either new or repairs - I wouldn't hesitate to call Michael Casas (Plaster Master) to do the work - and would recommend him to anyone! It's well worth the price to have work DONE RIGHT!

Michael is a rare breed in LA: an utter professional who takes pride in his craft. We called him after getting a few bids just to do a price comparison and were delighted to find his quote quite a bit more reasonable than most we had gotten. More than that, his personality coupled with the important questions he asked during the walkthrough certainly instilled utmost confidence and you knew immediately you're talking to someone who is going to good work. We booked him immediately to start a few days later. Not much to say about the work itself: they were in when they said they'd be, they were beyond careful with every single thing they did; they worked slightly longer than the original quote but still billed us for the quoted price; the patching looks great and he even fixed a few things that weren't included in the original bid. Can't really ask for more. I wouldn't hesitate to use Michael and his crew again. So nice to meet someone in this city who cares so deeply about what they do and isn't out to rob you blind or make a quick buck with shoddy work.

AMAZING! We called the Plaster Master for an estimate after finding him on Angies list. He returned our call immediately, and even made time to come over for the estimate the same afternoon. We scheduled the job, and Mike and his son arrived in the morning and set right to work. They carefully moved appliances that were in their way and covered the floor, counters and anything else that might have otherwise gotten dirty. They cleaned up in the evening before leaving, and made everything exactly as it had been when they arrived -- all with a smile. We decided to have a little more work done than originally planned, and Mike happily came an extra day to do it. His work is so amazing that I almost cried when he was finished and I got to see my kitchen walls again! He is very particular about his work, and made sure everything was perfect. Every line/corner is absolutely straight - I think the walls look better now than they did when the house was built in 1950! Mike also mentioned to us the proper way to paint plaster, and even recommended which paint to use and where to get it. They were also very friendly to our cat - who was constantly bothering them to see what they were doing. They were really good about taking care to not let him out when they were working and going in and out the door. They took care of all the clean-up , and were very pleasant at all times. I look forward to hiring Mike again to work on the other side of the house that needs some repairs.

It was a bit of a trip up at first. Michael and his son arrived on time only to find out that his son forgot to put the tools in the truck. Michael was really angry with him and very apologetic and we agreed that they should come back the next morning so the whole job could be done in one day. They came back, cleared the living room as much as possible, covered everything else, sealed off the room and went to work. We had originally talked about repairing just the two large cracks, but he went ahead and did all of the smaller ones, too -- no extra charge. Cleaned up beautifully. Did a first rate job. Advised us about priming and painting for the best results. Mike is a pro.
Description of Work: Michael and his son repaired two prominent cracks running the full length of my living room ceiling, plus a bunch of smaller cracks on the walls. On the ceiling he removed the plaster on either side of the cracks, added metal lathe to prevent future cracking and plastered and finished to match the existing texture.

Michael called me back right away to arrange for an estimate. He was very knowlegable and friendly. When he came to do the job, with his son as his assistant, he protected everything around the work area very well and did a great job of cleaning up aterwards. Before starting the plastering he even checked to see if the repaired rain gutter had actually stopped leaking. Once he started the work he showed me each step and explained everything he was doing.
Description of Work: I had a portion of the wall around the fireplace that had been damaged by water that had leaked in from the faulty placement of a rain gutter. The work involved adding another stud to the existing one that had been water damaged and then plastering the area to match the texture of the existing wall.

Phone response was immediate. All questions were answered. The estimate was scheduled in a timely manner. Mike was prompt and friendly. We walked the job while he explained the process. It was like working with an old friend. The job was scheduled, also in a very timely and convenient manner. The crew (Mike and Mario, his assistant) arrived as scheduled. Prior to starting the work, they laid ample protective paper and plastic from the front door to the various locations of the holes. They worked quickly. Clean-up was impeccable. These are true craftsmen. Mike gave tips on how best to paint over the plaster. They were able to complete the work in less time than estimated and charged the job accordingly, saving a fair amount of money. While their hourly rate is not particularly low, one gets what one pays for. The work is excellent, worth every penny.
Description of Work: We had copper re-piping done which left four sizable holes in the plaster walls of our 106 year old house. The Plaster Master and his assistant cleaned up the holes, installed lath, plastered, and matched the texture of the walls.

Mike Casis and his wife Virginia are both very professional. Mike was able to come on a day that worked with our schedule. We had received 2 other bids - but both of them were going to use drywall and they told us we would likely have a visible seam in the ceiling. Both of the other contractors told us the job would take 2-3 days. We didn't want a seam & were not crazy about having our kitchen in disarray for 2-3 days. That is why we went with Mike. He didn't use drywall & he did the job in one day. He is a true craftsman. He makes plastering look easy - which of course it's not ! Mike was very careful not to leave any visible seam. He also took care to leave the area clean.
Description of Work: We had an electrician remove old fluorescent 8' tubes and install recessed lighting. We needed the entire area where the old system had been plastered. We also needed a small area in a wall patched due to some previous work on a pocket door.

We had originally been given a recommendation for a plasterer by the plumber who did the work that created the hole. It was around the Christmas holiday and upon contacting the plasterer the plumber had recommended, he wasn't available for a week or two. Went to Angie's List and found The Plaster Master. Called and left a voice mail message and our call was returned within the hour. Michael (owner/plasterer) came out the next day to look at the job and provided an estimate. He came out two days later (January 2nd) and arrived right on time. He was very careful about keeping the house and area around the work site clean by putting plastic down on the floors. He explained the process and how he would be applying multiple layers of plaster after he prepped the wall. It took about three hours to complete the work. He did a great job of cleaning up the work area when he was done. He also gave some great tips for how to best paint the section of wall that he had repaired.

We had to take plaster and wood lath off of three walls and the ceiling in our bathroom when we removed a shower and replaced the plumbing and electrical outlets. We wanted to preserve the look and integrity of the existing walls in our home by having a plaster finish. Due to a tight budget, this is a project we were going to attempt ourselves although we were nervous after reading how challenging plaster can be for a novice. After receiving an estimate from another plasterer who was going to apply a veneer plaster finish, we decided we could not afford to hire someone. On the suggestion of someone at a paint store we have visited, we called Mike to get some advice about finding materials. We felt our inquiries were more than welcome after talking to his warm and friendly wife, Virginia, who gave Mike our information. As soon as we were on the phone with him, we felt compelled to find out how much it would cost to have him do the job. Mike came to the house that afternoon and gave us an estimate immediately. He thoroughly explained his process of plastering, which we soon realized would be superior to veneer plaster. His estimate was also comparable if not better than the quote we had for veneer. When he left, we felt we had been in the presence of a true craftsman. We were dying to hire him, but we just didn't think it was possible. After a night of number-crunching and the consideration of putting another project on hold, we decided to go for it. It's amazing to feel confident you've made the right decision in hiring someone before they've even begun working. Mike was waiting on another job to start, so we were very fortunate that he was able to start the next day. Watching him work was an education in plaster craftsmanship. Mike is friendly and maintains a high level of professionalism. His dedication to our home was clear. He was very attentive to detail, working around our plumbing and electrical fixtures and replicating the bull nose finish he saw in the rest of the house around the bathroom window. He created a seamless transition between his new plaster wall and the existing plaster wall. He repaired the finish of a niche in a difficult corner. We are trying to do most of the work on our fixer-upper ourselves, but it takes a person like Mike with years of experience to apply an authentic, smooth plaster finish like he did in our bathroom. The walls are absolutely beautiful. He left the job site spotless. Hearing about some of the amazing places he's worked around town, we were truly honored to watch him work in our home. We are so pleased we've maintained the integrity of our home by way of plaster. Mike more than lives up to his name, The Plaster Master.
Description of Work: Replaced a damaged ceiling and walls of bathroom. Wallboard over studs. Reinforced wallboard joints with metal lath. Paper and metal lath over existing wood lath. Applied a base of gypsum and per-lite. Hand crafted new bull nose for window. Applied a smooth finish coat.
