Description of Work: Made an inquiry to get a quote for repairs on a cabinet server...Sent photos via email so Rene could see what damage there is on the furniture. Rene was prompt at responding to the Angie's list inquiry that I submitted.He was courteous and professional. Unfortunately, his quote to repair my furniture was just too high - He quoted around $700 - $800 to repair - and of course, this is only based off of the photos that I sent - sight unseen.I will have to keep shopping until I find the right person to do quality repair to the cabinet at a rate that is reasonable and one that I can afford. He business is not from the Glendale area, but he comes to the Glendale area and has clients here.

+ -1 moreThe entire bottom of the old rocking chair was shot: springs sticking out, cotton, burlap and fabric torn. We had put corrugated metal on the bottom in an attempt to hold in the upholstery but no one could sit in the chair. The black finish had rubbed away on the arms and the center back. When Rene came out to give me an estimate on a grandfather clock I also asked about restoring the chair. He offered to repair the seat for $480. When I asked what about the fabric he offered to do the whole thing for $500. I believe he said this was a 20% discount. When I asked about the black finish he said he would throw that in gratis. I was impressed that Rene pulled out a fabric sample book from his van and immediately opened it to the fabric I ultimately chose. He has an excellent eye for what works with the surrounding room. He called in advance to confirm his arrival time, took the chair that day w/ an estimated July 11 return. When I hadn't heard anything by July 17, I called and the chair was brought to me three days later. No problem, I wasn't in a rush. The chair looked great. I really love how the fabric picks up the colors and designs in the room. Only flaw (small) is that the line at the bottom of the cushion where the fabric wraps under is not straight (once upon a time, several furniture tacks would have been used but today everyone seems to use staples -- this job could have used a few more). When I later brought the chair into the light to take a photograph, I discovered that the black finish on the arms had been rubbed into (like large erasures). Probably happened when Rene's associate, Gerson, had difficulty getting the chair out of the van over other furniture. Rene agreed to look at the chair about a week later. I then asked about gluing some pieces back onto an armoire on the same day, sent pics by email to obtain an estimate (see other review). Gerson quickly fixed the damaged arms and the finish is now beautiful. Price may be a touch high but, although I could have bought a different chair for half the price, I could not have found a similar-style chair and would have had to pay for pick-up and delivery. Note to members: Rene requests 50% deposit but it is my understanding that CA law dictates 10% or $1000, whichever comes first. No problem. I know where he works.

+ -1 moreBased on photos emailed to him, Rene provided a telephone estimate of $150, "maybe less," to repair an armoire. There was no discussion of a charge for travel time as the work was done on the same day that Rene and Gerson returned to follow-up on the repair of a rocking chair. Rene re-glued the scroll work on the crown as well as a couple small pieces elsewhere. The work took approximately 1/2 hour. Without being asked, Rene also cleaned the top of the armoire where I couldn't reach, as well as the black scroll work decoration. He explained that a small amount of white glue under the crown would dry colorless but after he left I realized there is no glue visible anywhere else (loving hands decades ago attended to that kind of detail) and picked out the glue myself. I had offered to return any clamps that needed to be used and Rene said he had used a clamp but I think the clamp was removed too soon. I had to press on the crown piece for a while after removing the excess glue. The small section at the top of the bracket-shaped smaller pieces that were re-glued is slightly crooked. (I'm an artist, I see things. No one would notice this but me so no big deal.) I also had to clean up a couple small patches on the oak floor that appeared to be glue that had been partially wiped up (clue: water doesn't work, alcohol doesn't work, Mop n' Glow did the trick). Note: Stay in the room and watch. I didn't want to be intrusive. Had I stayed, I could have addressed these minor issues. Dumb. Ultimately, I'm delighted to see this armoire looking good again and appreciate Rene's responsiveness.

+ -1 moreMy antique European walnut grandfather clock is infested w/ powder post beetles, has many tiny holes, needs fumigation. Rene estimated $680 to refinish the clock after fumigation by stripping, sanding and covering the beetle holes, incl. p/u and delivery (valued at $100). Another restorer's estimate was $750, incl. p/u and delivery. A third restorer offered three solutions: "full restoration" ($400 to strip, sand, stain), "repair and retouch" ($225 to fill holes, stain, lightly refinish surface that, he said, "has a nice patina") and "do nothing" because cost of restoration would not be recouped upon sale of the clock (after fumigation, I would fill holes, color w/ furniture pens). So you see there is not only a wide range for this kind of work but also the possibility to "think outside the box," (e.g., do nothing). Rene was extremely professional in setting the appointment w/in 2 days of my call, calling in advance that day to confirm arrival time and arriving a little early. My problem was how to get the clock to a fumigation chamber, and from there to Rene (no one coordinates this stuff). Rene tried to help by offering to haul the clock and a coffee table (damaged only on the underside) to and from a fumigation chamber near him and then back to me for $120. Unfortunately, when I called that fumigator no one called back. After interviewing the third restorer, I decided not to use Rene for the clock but did use him to refinish a rocking chair (see other review). Note that a full restoration of an antique apparently removes the finish, which you may want to keep in tact. Only the third restorer addressed this issue.

Description of Work: I only have good things to say. I sent Rene photo's of the pieces i needed fixing, he gave me a rough estimate over the phone, then came over to fetch them. He went to the fabric store to pick up the fabric I'd chosen (& paid for it!). He sanded, vanished, refinished & reupholstered my 50's rocking chair, he repaired tears & refinished my favorite 50's vinyl club chair and I was so impressed by his work that I also gave him some other furniture to reupholster. Again, he went to the fabric store to pick up my fabric.

Rene came to my house to give me a firm quote and was on time and punctual. I ended up having him take the chest the same day for the repair work. The job was done on time and Rene delivered the chest back to me when the work was complete and was again on time. The work done was fantastic. The chest looks beautiful and the hinges are great (Rene reinforced them even more than anticipated) so that I have no hesitation using the chest for storage. It is now a beautiful piece of furniture in my home. Thanks Rene.

+ 0 moreI had acquired a used diner booth from a restaurant closing about 9 years ago. There was a lot of wear and tear on the booth so it was time to replace the vinyl. I contacted a few upholsterers and Rene gave me the best price quote. He picked up the benches and brought fabric samples to my house. He was very helpful with this step. We agreed on a fabric and the job was done in about 5 days, 2 days ahead of the agreed upon schedule. Rene added some padding to the benches for shape and comfort, and did a great job with the upholstery. He was courteous, punctual, and professional every step of the way. Would definitely recommend.

They came out to collect the furniture right on time and two weeks later delivered them - looking like new! They did a beautiful job restoring the wood on the table and chairs. Description of Work: For years, I have carted a beautiful, hand-made desk from the time my grandfather was the president of a sugar company in Cuba (1920's) around the country with me as I have moved from state-to-state. The desk was handmade in the early part of the 20th century - possibly as early as late 19th century - in Cuba. It had a matching wooden chair with leather seat and back - the leather had some rather ornate carvings in it. After years of sitting in storage in Louisiana, Illinois, Washington State and California, the wood was dried, cracked, broken and generally looked like h***. One of the small doors on the side had fallen apart. The chair had scratches and dents, the leather seat was completely cracked all of the way across. If not for the fact this was a family piece handed down from several generations to me, I would have just pitched it to save the hauling costs. Finally, I decided to have it looked at and called Rene at Rene Guzman Studio. I had called for a completely unrelated issue - I called him to make a repair to my brand new leather couch which had been damaged by the movers as they installed it in my home (and after Rene's repair, you can't tell there was ever a scratch). The desk and chair - returned 2 weeks after he took them away - look stunning! The beautiful shine in the wood has been restored, all of the cracks and dents/dings have been removed. The door has been rebuilt and Rene was even able to apply a patch to the split in the leather chair such that we could keep the original leather (and all of the fine carving work) to preserve much of the character of the chair. I am totally impressed with the work done by he and his assistant. They came to the house, looked at the pieces, said what they thought they could do, gave me an estimate, and took it all away with a 50% deposit. 2 weeks later, the beautiful pieces were returned - and I can't say how wonderful they look. In fact, I had one more piece of broken furniture - a bedroom mirror - that he took back with him to fix as well. I did not spend much time getting estimates from others for this work - I had seen that Rene's work was highly praised by other Angie's List members and the price he quoted for the desk and chair (including the leather restoration) was $1,680. This is less than I had expected so didn't quibble - and had the work done with outstanding results.

+ -1 moreFrom start to finish the process went very smoothly. I called them, they showed up to give me the estimate exactly when they said they would. The table was finished when they said it would, and the delivered it to me on time.
Description of Work: I had an old coffee table that needed refinishing. Rene did an amazing job. I'm so happy with it. It looks gorgeous. I called and set up an appointment and they were right on time. The work took about 2 weeks, which is exactly what he had told me. They stained the wood, and made some small repairs also. I really didn't want to spend that much, but I am so happy now that I did. I will definitely use them again.
