Reed did a great job putting my vegetable garden together and I highly recommend him. I had already purchased heirloom seeds and the raised cedar bed kit. It was my first attempt at gardening and I needed his guidance as far as placement of the beds, type of soil to use, a non-toxic wood treatment, what seeds to plant and where they should go, etc. He patiently answered my many questions, came up with a plan and went to the store to purchase materials that I needed. He went above and beyond the call of duty when I purchased 40 bags of Mel's Mix at Lowe's and he found that I was short by a few bags. He went back to Lowe's on my behalf, showed my receipt to the manager and told him what happened. He not only brought back the missing bags, but they gave him several more on top of that for our trouble. Thanks to him, my garden is thriving and in future, I'll know what to do on my own. I've found a new hobby that I love and enjoy spending time in my garden and giving out my organic vegetables to family and friends.
Description of Work: Put together 5 raised cedar boxes from a kit, treated them with a non-toxic wood preservative, removed grass underneath boxes and cultivated the soil, put planting mix in boxes, planted seeds and capped lawn sprinklers surrounding the raised beds.

Reed is a Practical Craftsman with an Artist’s viewpoint. I very much enjoyed working with him. Reed is very patient and listens carefully to what you have to say. He comes up with excellent design ideas and plans. He is also very adept at diplomacy. Several times my wife and I had sharp disagreements on what we wanted, but Reed very skillfully and calmly meditated the issues and found great solutions. Reed was very meticulous when it came to choosing the materials for our garden beds. He carefully inspected every board to make sure we were getting the best quality available at a fair price. I learned a great deal about wood, organic gardening, and craftsmanship from Reed. It was a great experience. I Recommend Reed Very Highly.
Description of Work: My Wife and I wanted to create a vegetable garden with raised beds that was not only functional but a decorative place to hang-out and entertain friends and family. We had a side yard of barren white granite dust that was an eyesore. We contacted Reed. He came out, surveyed and measured our plot and spoke with us about what we wanted to create. Reed is and excellent listener. After hearing our ideas, he had some great suggestions. We also provided him with a few pictures we saw online to give him some ideas of what we wanted. He drew up a great design for us. The plan called for nine beds, of varying heights, some with seating caps, and a three tiered bed for herbs. With some help from me, he graded down and leveled the plot. He purchased and transported the wood and other materials. He researched local soil distributors and also obtained some environmentally friendly preservative for the wood. Each of the boxes was a bit different in some way from the others, but he skillfully built each and integrated them together to make a beautiful layout. Each box is very sturdy, using top quality redwood boards with wire mesh underneath to keep out gophers. Together we filled the beds with soil and he attached a trellis to one bed. We also spread mulch around the ground outside of the beds to enhance the look of the garden and to control the dust. We Are Extremely Pleased with the outcome of this project and love showing it off to other people. We have received many compliments.

I can't say enough about how reliable, hard-working, and knowledgeable Reed was. I learned a lot through the process, he saved us from making a couple of BIG mistakes (ordering nutri-humus on-line? make sure you know what is in it). He completed the entire project on time, on budget, and it is absolutely beautiful! I cannot wait to put in a full edible garden!
Description of Work: I love to garden, but last year was a disaster because of a gopher (grrrr). The best solution was to build raised beds with strong wired bottoms.. I put off calling until the last minute--seedlings were in the stores and I was already thinking of planting by the time I called Reed. He responded the same day! We made plans to have him come out and bid on the work the next day. He came out and measured and examined the garden space. He has a wonderful aesthetic sensibility, which I really didn't comprehend until the project was complete. He constructed four large raised beds out of redwood, with strong wired bottoms. He placed them in tiers down the garden slope, with side paths and paths between each. He helped us fill the beds with soil, and used his magic to amend the soil with worm castings and compost. This stuff is the best dirt I have ever planted in!

If you want a beautiful, well-designed raised vegetable garden, then Reed Poverny is your guy. During Novemer 2011 Reed designed a raised bed garden for me that included boxes for vegetables, herbs, and flowers. It's now February, and I have a crop of delicious organic veges and the center box with flowers ( including a tepee for flowers that grow on vines) is blooming nicely. In addition to designing the garden layout and constructing the boxes, Reed also filled the boxes, selected and planted the plants and flowers. He basically turned a scraggly plot of yard into a productive well-organized garden, and also provided advice on where to get a compost bin (cheap!). Reed was pleasant to work with, patient, gave great advice on the layout and types of soil and plants that would work best, was always on-time and his work was a good value. I would certainly hire him again, and have recommended him to several friends. Save money at the grocery store and get your garden on with Reed Poverny!
Description of Work: - Design and construction of raised bed and flower garden - Prepared garden location - Constructed boxes and filled with organic soil - Constructed tepee for vining flowers - Selected vegetable plants and flowers - Provided instructions on garden maintenance including composting

On the first meeting, Reed listened and told me his hourly rate. He gave me receipts for purchases as the project progressed. He was observant and used materials I had (e.g., in the garage or back yard) rather than making other purchases to achieve the effect he felt I wanted. The result was a beautiful container garden on my front porch. With respect to this report, the category of "Landscaping" really does not fit my project. However, there is no other one—such as garden design—that could be selected instead.
Description of Work: I wanted to refresh my porch container garden including modifying my drip system to all plants. I wanted a garden designer to spruce up the plants; make recommendations for new plants; arrange plants aesthetically; and adjust drip system to new garden design. Reed came and fulfilled all expectations. It ended up that I spent way more than I could actually afford for this endeavor but it was not in any way his fault. He worked assiduously—both on-site but at garden centers and at home to produce the effect that resulted. I enjoyed working with him and will probably consult him again.

If you need a sound and talented individual to help you create an edible garden, we have someone we can whole-heartedly recommend. Not only was Reed Poverny great to work with, listening carefully to our ideas, patiently guiding us in practical considerations in order to realize our vision of a working organic vegetable garden, but his knowledge, experience, and skill resulted in a custom-built garden that is both beautiful and prolific. Simply put, we are delighted with his work. We found Reed to be punctual, highly conscientious, reliable, and trustworthy. Also, his rates are quite reasonable. So, if you want someone to install your garden from start to finish (raised beds, stone work, trellises, etc.), or merely need a guiding hand to help with plant and seed selection, compost bins, soil composition and the like, here is your man.
Description of Work: Reed graded the area in preparation for installation of raised garden beds, which he custom built to fit the area. He went with us to purchase the lumber, which he carefully selected. He built a structure to support an old grape vine that also functions as a pergola. Stones were laid inside to provide a floor and as stepping stones for pathways throughout the garden. He built trellises, a seating area, borders, railings, various natural structures for supporting our crops and installed a compost bin.
