General handyman, carpentry, drywall repair, door & window installation and repair, electrical, plumbing, tiling, hanging pictures, gutter cleaning & appliance installation.
The work went really well. The gentleman who did the work had to come out a couple of times. Unfortunately we have already had two of the doors fall off of the cabinets and they are very expensive. We will not be using Mr. Handyman again in the future.
Description of Work: Mr. Handyman came out to install the doors on our kitchen cabinets. He put on new hinges and installed each of the doors.

They pulled a bait and switch on me, totally unethical. I hired them to fix my 5 cracked floor tiles. All they had to do was take them out and put the new ones in which I already had. At the last minute they said the problem was the foundation of the house was not hard enough, so they wanted to fix that for $5-8 thousand additional dollars. I said no, but they still charged me an exorbitant amount for their "labor" time that they were at my house shining a flashlight in the crawlspace! Subsequently I had another handyman fix the floor tiles for $75, the job was perfect and is holding up fine a year later. DON'T GET RIPPED OFF BY MR HANDYMAN L.A.!!!
Description of Work: These guys were clowns. I hired them to fix my outdoor lights and my cracked floor tiles in the kitchen. They said they fixed the lights, but they did not work after they finished. They started to fill in grout for the floor tiles, but made a mess with grout everywhere.

Response from Mr. Handyman serving West Los Angeles
We were very sorry to learn that this customer was dissatisfied with the work we did for her. We always endeavor to provide the best quality service to all of our customers and we believe this is evidenced by the phenomenal rating we have on Angie’s List – almost all A’s! - including our Super Service Award. She actually hired us to do a number of things for her, most of which went very well. In all fairness to her, we did have some trouble with a few aspects of her job -- which is unusual for us. Of course we credited her some free time to make up for that. But her assertion that we tried to get her to do more work than was necessary is completely false. In fact, we suggested to the customer that she get another opinion on her cracked tiles because the floor itself had some give in it and our technician felt there might be a problem with the subfloor. Does that sound like something a company that’s trying to sell unnecessary work would do? We’re not your average handyman. We are fully licensed, bonded and insured. And we guarantee our work. So for us to install new tiles where the tiles are cracked and the floor is unstable, we need to be sure we’re doing it properly. Where other handymen might be willing to do the quick job and run, we just don’t work like that. Of course we’re happy the easier fix seems to have worked and we hope it holds up for a long time. But what if it hadn’t? Or doesn’t? Would her other handyman be back to fix it as we would? And if her subfloor actually is weak in that area, it’s going to be more than a few cracked tiles she’ll be stuck dealing with. The point is, we were not trying to do anything other than do the job the way we felt it needed to be done since we guarantee our work. Our goal is to be thorough and do the job right -- which in the end usually saves the customer money. Of course, we were very unhappy to leave a customer feeling this way about our services. And we have offered to continue to try to resolve this particular situation with her but have not received a response. Still, we assure our customers that we will continue to work harder than any other company to achieve their complete satisfaction. This is just one of the many reasons we are the number one handyman company in the country.

The handyman was a little late due to traffic. He replaced the window really quickly (called to get the glass ordered & cut while he was cleaning the old glass out). He determined we needed a new kitchen faucet & purchased one -- it ended up being defective. He did not charge us for the time spent going to get a replacement for the defective faucet -- I love the faucet he picked out & it works great. He was clean & professional and courteous. Expensive, but probably worth it!

First off, everyone I spoke to at this company was very friendly and helpful! They sent out Ken Brion the next day. Ken is a real gem. He took a look at what needed to be repaired and then asked me if I was comfortable going to get a list of supplies myself (therefore saving me time and money since they work on an hourly basis). I was and when I returned home from the hardware store (not even 20 minutes later), he already had the door rehung! After that, he removed the damaged drywall in the bathroom, figured out where the problem was, sealed it and rebuilt the wall and corner. The entire time, he was so pleasant, fun to be around and a real animal lover (my cat was very impressed). It took exactly the amount of time he said it would take (4 hours) and he didn't waste a minute. To save me money, he even left me some sandpaper so that I could do the initial sanding myself and then he would drop by to put on the final joint compound and caulking. After I repainted the area, you can't tell there was ever a problem, it looks great! I was pleased with my experience and wouldn't hesitate to call them again. They might be a little more expensive (there's a 2 hour minimum, so make sure you have enough jobs to fill that time), but I was very comfortable with Ken and the fact that Mr. Handyman has a contractor's license.

They weren't able to keep the original appointment time because of emergency repairs with the customer scheduled before me. I received a call well in advance of my scheduled appointment so I didn't waste time waiting for them. They explained the situation and were very apologetic and re-scheduled me for the next day. Although I was disappointed that the work couldn't be done when scheduled, I appreciated the way they handled it and certainly would want them to do what they did if I were the customer with the emergency. Once the handyman arrived, he was efficient and thorough. He made a minimal mess and cleaned everything completely before he left. Everything was in working order. Overall, an excellent experience.

Scheduling was completely unreliable. They would postpone and postpone. Their was several tasks. He didn't even do one of the tasks and I was charged. They said they would send someone to fix it free of charge. They did but they did charge me. It was overall just a bad experience. I wasn't very comfortable with him in my home. I was contacted after posting this report and Mr Handyman did offer to refund part of the paid amount to restore my faith in this company. The technician they sent is no longer with the company.

I had a horrible experience and will never hire Mr. Handyman ever again. At their website, you will see that Mr. Handyman's motto is 'On time, Done right.' and 'Your satisfaction is guaranteed.' The work that I requested was NOT 'done right' and I made it clear that I was NOT satisfied. My Home Improvement Contract (contract) states: "You are entitled to a completely filled in copy of this agreement signed by both you and the contractor, before any work may be started." I did not receive a copy of the contract until after remitting payment for the day's work at 5:15 P.M. on May 30, 2007. Mr. Handyman DID NOT 'relocate sprinkler heads' as specified in my contract. Mr. Handyman DID NOT 'level backyard with pavers' correctly and to my satisfaction. I was charged $1,414.33, not the $1,029.00 estimated contract price I had been given. Mr. handyman's contract states: "The actual contract amount may not exceed the estimated contract amount without written authorization from the buyer." I was asked to sign a box on the contract on May 30, 2007 which I was told would 'authorize my credit card payment'. I now know that I was asked to sign a statement that read, "Customer hereby acknowledges the satisfactory completion of the work and services." when all the parties involved in this transaction were aware that the work was not completed as of 5:15 P.M. on May 30, 2007. On June 11, 2007 I asked Mike McCarthy at the Mr. Handyman Corporate offices for one of two resolutions: 1) to have the patio area addition redone by a local Mr. Handyman technician who has experience working with paver patio construction or 2) to be refunded the money I spent on the patio area so I could hire another contractor to have the work done right. David Silverman and Mr. Handyman of the West did neither. The contracts states: "Mr. Handyman bills on time and materials basis subject to the rules and regulations of the Contractors State License Board." The Contractors State License Board considers 'time and materials' contracts IMPROPER. I have since had to hire two contractors to complete the work Mr. Handyman did not. I have paid these contractors $1,000.00 and $500.00 respectively.
Description of Work: Relocate sprinkler heads. Fix a leaking outdoor faucet. Add on to an existing paver block patio area. Clear and level two areas in the backyard.

Response from Mr. Handyman serving West Los Angeles
We were very sorry to learn that the member was dissatisfied with the work we did for her. We always endeavor to provide the best quality service to all of our customers and we believe this is evidenced by the phenomenal rating we have on A's list - all A's! - including our Super Service Award. She claims that she did not receive a copy of her contract before we started the work, but we have a copy of the contract signed in two places by her - once before we started authorizing us to start, and once after we finished stating she was happy with the work we provided. So we are confused as to why she states she did not receive that. This is just one of many things the member mentions in her report that we have supporting evidence to refute or we recall entirely differently. It almost makes us wonder if she may be confusing us with another service company. In fairness to her, one of the things she claims is true. We underestimated how long it would take to do the job, due to the uncommonly deteriorated conditions of her yard and the prior work she had done. Because we felt bad about this, and because we do our best to make sure all our customers are happy, I immediately met with her and her husband and offered to finish the work at an extremely reduced rate - less than half our normal fee. They were happy with that - and with the work we had done so far - and asked us to finish the work on the pavers. Upon completion I went to the member's home again. They inspected the work, and my technician and I did not leave until we had finished everything to their complete satisfaction. A few weeks later, we heard from her credit card company - apparently the member had asked them for some money back, then later changed her mind and inexplicably asked for all of her money back. The credit card company she used is completely focused on customer service and almost always takes their customer's side. In this case, however, even though she applied for a refund multiple times, they sided with us - agreeing that we had done our best to satisfy the customer and had acted in a manner that was extremely fair. In the end we were very unhappy to leave a customer feeling this way about our services. We gave her even more than we thought was fair - because we, like her credit card company, operate under the assumption that the customer is always right. To this day, until this customer, our record was perfect. For the many years we have been in business, this is the first time anything like this has happened to us. But we assure our customers that we will continue to work harder than any other company to achieve their complete satisfaction. This is just one of the many reasons we are the number one handyman company in the country. And of course, the CSLB has full knowledge of our business practices and has no problem with them. We have a perfect record with the BBB as well - save for this member's recent similar complaint to them.

I was only able to get an over the phone estimate which gave me a range of $360-560+, kind of a wide range in my opinion. Ken was punctual, friendly and professional. However, he did not inform me beforehand of a $25 charge for supplies which consisted of a paint roller, a plastic tray and few pieces of masking tape. Since I was going to the home improvement store anyway, I wish he had told me what he needed and I could have bought all the supplies for less than $5.00. Also, he did not trim the expanding foam in the roof tiles because he thought it might expand some more. It didn't and the foam looked really messy and awful. This might just be the nature of the foam, but now I wished he had trimmed it. He also didn't inspect an old can of paint that I had for the inside touch-up job. The paint turned out to be too old and I had to buy a new can and repaint the interior myself the next day. He did a good job with the exterior painting and fixing the toilet. Initially there was a miscommunication, but Ken came back and cleaned up the foam and did a great job. David, the owner, was very responsive to my concerns and I was very impressed. Therefore, I am giving them an A!
Description of Work: Paint an outdoor gate and door, put foam under the roof to prevent birds' nests, touch-up paint indoor, and fix a broken toilet handle.
A handyman arrived promptly as scheduled to look at my leaking sliding glass door & determined that it had been improperly installed & sealed. He recommended a solution & while he was there I also asked him for an estimate to install crown molding in my living room & new flooring in my kitchen. He was unable to do that as all estimates must come from the main office, so someone was to get back me with some estimates. After 3 weeks, the owner, David Silverman, called with his deepest apologies that no one got back to me with the estimates. He said that customer service is very important to him & it concerned him that my request for an estimate fell through the cracks. He was very apologetic throughout our conversation & he personally provided me with an estimate. Given that the owner took it upon himself to call & apologize indicates that the company values its customers, takes customer service seriously and believes in first rate service. I would definitely use them again.

I contacted the contractor's office on Friday and spoke to Cindy, the office manager. She provided all the details about the contractor: the credentials of the business, what work they do, etc. We set up a time/date for the work I needed to be done and we discussed the price. Cindy was friendly, yet professional. Robbie showed up early and performed all the work in an efficient and competent manner. We had a little less than an hour of time left but did not have any more work for him to do. Nonetheless, we felt like we got our money's worth.

Overall, it was very good. All of the walls surrounding the bath/shower wall had to be demolished and redone, and the construction portion of the project finished much more quickly than was estimated. (The guys even took advantage of the fact that it was trash day and disposed of all of the old material without having to worry about an additional disposal fee!) After some complications in installing a glass mosaic tile border (multiple installations/removals/reinstallations) we are VERY happy with the final product. Mr. Handyman charges by the hour, so while the project was in the midst of the difficulties, we were a bit concerned about the final bill. In the end, David didn't charge us for any of the extra time required for the re-dos, or for some additional time required to fix what was essentially a cosmetic issue. The electrical work was pretty straightforward; the guys would spend a little bit of time on it each day during the bathroom renovation project.
