+ 0 moreI recently extensively remodeled my home and had hardwood floors installed. My contractor strongly recommended Kalley so I agreed to use them. While the quality of the actual wood and installation were acceptable, the company's responsiveness has been absolutely the worst I experienced among the dozens of subcontractors I used. I literally had to make dozens of calls to the owner David A in order to have what he called 'very simple, minor touchups' completed, and to this day (months later) the work is still not completed. I have been told multiple times by David to 'please be patient' and have heard multiple excuses why they can't make it to my place to complete the work. I have taken time off from work several times to be home for a scheduled visit from this company, only to have the workers never show up! I think part of the problem is that in at least my situation, Kalley utilized subcontractors to do significant pieces of the work and seem to have little control over their accountability/responsiveness either. And when a subcontractor of theirs flakes out, Kalley doesn't seem to have the bench strength (or desire) to find someone else to take care of the situation. Extremely unprofessional. On the flip side, the owner David was extremely prompt (and aggressive) in asking for payment for the various phases of the job. I feel stupid for having paid him in full for the job before all the loose ends were completed. Don't make that same mistake yourself if you use this company!

They arrived on time, were professional, courteous and knowledgeable. The gentleman explained the process, cost and the time it would take to complete the job. My decision to hire another company was based on price. I am happy with my choice but would consider Kalley again in the future.

He was willing to meet us on a weekend (Sunday) and had his associate Sergio drop by on Monday to a**** our floors for an accurate quote and drop off samples. We asked for an estimate to pull up engineered flooring, re-do the subfloor and put down new flooring of our choosing for about 1,000 sq ft. The quote was reasonable (less than $10,000) and they were available to start quickly. We didn't end up choosing to pursue this particular project at this time, but when we do, I would have no hesitation about calling Harry again. He is text-friendly, which is nice for the working customer. I was able to communicate during the work day without taking personal calls.

I can only assume that Kalley's negative reaction to moving furniture as part of the job was the reason I was stood up. A courtesy call or an indication that they did not move furniture would have been more appropriate and I would not be writing this review.

Description of Work: I am sure Kalley does good work. His installer seemed to be professional and know what he was doing, but working with Harry must be a nightmare. I am very rarely compelled to write bad reviews, but his professionalism is terrible. I called Harry to do a installation for me. It was different than his typical install, but nothing his installer wasn't clearly capable of. I asked his installer to come view the job before agreeing to do the work. Harry never came to look. The installer said he could do it and we agreed upon a date. Harry still did not come. On the day of the installation his installer came and started working. Worked for about 3 hours, then Harry showed up. At this point, I have already purchased ALL the materials at my own cost. I am simply paying Harry for installation. (So, there is NO money he needs to spend other than paying labor.) He showed up at my house and told me I have to give him 50% down payment now. After asking for his license number or a contract he turned his back to me and said they were quitting the job. I told him repeatedly I have no issue giving him the money, but if he does not give me a license number or a contract how do I know he will not just take off with my money and I never hear from him again. His response was, "YOU just have to trust me!" Again, I have never met Harry until 3 minutes before this. I only found his company on this site and never heard of his work ethic etc, but I think we all know there are some shady contractors out there and we have get some assurances we will not be taken for our money. He then walked outside and told his installer to pack up because I wasn't willing to pay. I told his installer that could not be further from the truth... The installer and I had already had numerous conversations and were very happy about getting this done. So, Harry just influenced him to not do the job because he works for him extensively. FINALLY Harry gave me a card so I could go look up his license number and at least have something on his business. I agreed to write him a 50% check. By that time it was too late. The installer had already packed up and I was stuck with nothing after waiting weeks to get this done. Now I am back at square one. I spoke with his installer afterwards... he did not want to do the job because he was upset Harry did not get a contract with me and because he was paying him so little under tough constraints. I told him I understood and I would increase the total job payment if he would just get his stuff back out and do the job. He said it would upset Harry now, so I was out of luck. Harry drove by my house again after that to make sure the installer did not try to work with me separately. So, long story short... I was doing great with his installer, but as soon as Harry showed up he threw the entire situation into an uproar over his unprofessional-ism. At least 10 times while we were talking I would ask Harry a question and he would turn his back to me and walk away. He said, "you will just have to trust me or we are not doing this job." Why I would want to work with such an unprofessional person to begin with is because I liked his installer and thought he could do the job. I think anyone that wants to use this company is looking for a headache by having to deal with Harry. Period.

+ -1 moreBased on Angie's List reviews, I phoned Harry for a quote to replace a few warped boards in my original hardwood floors. He didn't coordinate the service amongst his contractors. He left a message for me call one of his guys. Strange. I called the guy he told me to call, Sergio. I called a few times, got voicemail. Finally got him. He said he'd call me back in 20 minutes. He never did. Bad first impressions. I never even got a quote. I think I'll stop here and find someone else.

+ 0 moreI emailed the provider and received an automated email that he was out of town and to please contact him later. I waited until after the date and tried again, played phone and email tag with the gentleman. Finally I spoke to him and he was a little rude about having to come all the way out into the San Fernando Valley to my house to evaluate the job, even though he lists my neighborhood as part of his service area and there was no limitation on the coupon. My good vibes about all this quickly went down the drain. I scheduled an appointment with him and he cancelled, then he told me that actually what I wanted was probably not included in the coupon. I was reasonable and thought that we could negotiate for anything additional when he came to the house but he continued to be weird about coming out. Finally he asked me to call his subcontractor myself to set up an appointment, which i thought was pretty unprofessional. I started looking at reviews on angie's list in more detail and it turns out that a lot of the folks who get a coupon for him end up unhappy with the service. It is clearly just an up-sell opportunity for them and if they aren't going to get a bigger project out of it, they seem to f**** it off on a subcontractor. Distressed, I called Angie's list and asked for my money back and did not use the coupon. Angie's list was great about refunding my money and listened to my complaints. So far I haven't enjoyed either of my experiences buying those coupons and i'm unlikely to do so again. The list needs to be more careful in who they promote through this service. I will never do work with this contractor. He treated me like I was an unfortunate burden to him and I can spend my money someplace else. I am not a confrontational person, so I was hesitant to write this review, but finally when i was prompted by Angie's list email to make it, I decided it was only fair to the other members to write this down.
Description of Work: I have a small bedroom that needs to have its hardwood floor sanded and refinished. I bought one of the Angie's List Big Deal Coupons for this provider because the advertising for sanding and refinishing of a small amount of flooring seemed like a perfect fit.

Description of Work: We bought a house in Santa Monica that needed some work and gave notice that we would be leaving our rental on August 31st. After doing sewer and electrical we realized that the floors throughout the house were in very poor shape and needed to be refinished. A friend recommended someone else. After they came out and measured they were very slow in getting us an estimate. Unable to wait any longer I looked on Angie's list and called Kalley Flooring. By this time we were getting worried because we had to move out at the end of the month. Harry came out on the day I called and quickly and professionally measured the house and talked about what was required for the job. We gave him a deposit on the spot with an informal estimate and his people were out working on the house the next day. He sent the formalized contract soon after and it was exactly what we had talked about. His crew was professional, prompt and were able to work with and around the fireplace company we had doing work at the same time.

Description of Work: Called Kalley Floors this morning and Harry the owner, picked up on the second ring. I am in the process of evaluating the pros and cons of having my oak wood floors refinished or going with carpet. Harry provided me with excellent detailed information on how his company refinishes wood floors and what one needs to do to maintain and enjoy having a finished hardwood floor long term. Harry also provided me with a ballpark quote, that is in line with what other refinishers quoted after they did an in home inspection. Harry offered me a free in home survey, when I am ready to move forward. It's a partnership. Don't assume what needs to be done. Take the time to see for yourself. Do communicate the game plan for the job. Do respect the opinions of your customers. Do follow up with an inspection visit and/or phone call.
Description of Work: Knock on wood and thank goodness for Kalley Flooring. Owning a home with 90% oak planked parquet floors it was a given that those floors required unending love and attention. After thirteen year's of cleaning, buffing, swiffering, polishing and babying our floors it was clear that we needed a professional "floor intervention". Enter Kalley Flooring and owner Harry. Based on an LA Deal offer I called the company and Harry himself was on the line. He immediately knew that our floors were high quality and needed to be restored with extreme care as to not damage the unique grain and color of the wood. If you know anything about the greater Los Angeles area you know that it is a traffic nightmare trying to get from West Los Angeles to our home in Long Beach. I am sure that many business owners wouldn't think twice about telling us to call a flooring company in our area. Not Harry. One day later Harry and his car's GPS made it's way to Long Beach to see the floors he gave us his estimate and told us that he could restore all or sections of our floors according to our timetable and budget. We booked the job that same day and working around our busy schedules chose a date a few days later to begin the work. Harry's best craftsman Sergio M. arrived at our home bright and early. Five minutes later Harry arrived to consult with Sergio on what needed to be done, areas needing special attention, the perfect stain and finish. The large first section of flooring was done in about three hours. As I write this review my floors are drying and sparkling like glass. It was a beautifully done job. We can't wait to start the next phase of our floor restoration. Thank you Harry and Sergio.

+ -1 moreMy husband and I took possesion of our new house on the third of July,we were not planning to re-do the hardwood floors but after visiting a friends house with beautifull wooden floors we deciced at the last minute to do ours before we moved in,so we were not expecting such great response as we got from Harry,he came and gave us an estimate the next day,even though it was the 4th of july !!The workers came the next day,on time and the work was done on Friday with the finishing on Saturday,the workers were promt and patient when I had a hard time deciding which stain I wanted and mixed up a few colours for me to see.\Alltogether it was a top notch proffesional job.The floors turned out really beautifully.l

+ -1 moreA delightful experience from start to finish. Harry came during the remodeling of my new home to make recommendations and provide an estimate. My Interior Decorator and I were very impressed with his knowledge, professionalism and price. His and quot;old worldand quot; charm was a lovely bonus. Harry pointed out some stains that might still be visible after refinishing. The company brought the wood for the new floors into the house to and quot;adjust to the environmentand quot; for a few days before installation. They were very flexible as a few days turned into weeks to accommodate construction delays and came exactly when we needed them. Jose Manuel did the work over a period of two days. He was pleasant, focused and seemed very skilled. Then we were not allowed in the house for a number of days, to allow the finish to harden. When we finally saw it, we were completely dazzled. The floors came out much better than anyone, including the decorator, expected (and she's seen a lot of floors refinished.) As predicted, there were two darker areas (water stains). But overall, the floors are just gorgeous. No one can guess which floors are old and which ones are new, even in places where the two join together.
Description of Work: Refinished oak floors in entire house- living room,dining room, hallway and two bedrooms. Minor repairs. Installed oak flooring to match in areas that did not already have it- guest room, office and bathroom. (Yes, bathroom!)

+ -1 moreThe upstairs flooring is laid over concrete, without a sub floor. I'm a bit nervous that this work won't last, every I know with experience and everything I've read on the web advises STRONGLY not to lay hardwood floors directly onto a concrete floor. Harry (the salesman) and I had discussed a subfloor during the bidding. But, Manuel, the man who does the work, said for some reason, I was never told, the subfloor wouldn't work, so it had to be special adhesive directly to the concrete. This made me extremely nervous, because I wanted floors that will last. Harry assured me repeatedly that he's been doing flooring for twenty plus years and he would do nothing that would endanger myself or my family. He said this repeatedly and sort of made fun of me wanting to know about the quality of the floors. Their contract limits their own liability, but gives no warranty regarding the wood or the laying of the floor. Manuel, the workman, is courteous, prompt and a good worker. THere seems to be a communication gap between Manuel and Harry, in that Harry would tell me one thing and then Harry would tell me another. This made scheduling challenging. The other strange thing was the second half of my payment they asked me to write a check out directly to Manuel. He needed the money to buy materials for another job. Then there is the fact that I've received repeated calls from Harry asking me to write a review on Angie's list. So, here it is Harry.
Description of Work: Harry just left his third message asking me for a review on Angie's List. So, here it is... Kalley Flooring removed carpeting from my stairway and upstairs hallway and put in Oak Floors. The work looks beautiful.

+ -1 moreHe said that the Big Deal was just for the minimum work and did not even include stain. He said he would be charging the members extra for everything other than the sanding and stripping. He did not look at my job, but he said it could end up costing $250, $400, or even $500. The Big Deal gave no definition of refinishing, but refinishing should mean stripping, sanding, and retaining, not just stripping and staining!

Every item in the to-do list was broken down to details and estimate provided. We would have definitely gone with him had we not received another estimate from a fellow Angies List member that came in slightly below Harry's estimate. As new home owners, we were a little hard pressed in finances and took the decision that we did. Hope all goes well with the other vendor, but highly recommend Kalley Flooring based on the limited communication and interaction we had.
Description of Work: 1950s Hardwood floor repair and refinishing after carpet removal. Some of the boards were damaged by termite and we had a floor furnace that needed to be removed and matching floor placed. We called Kalley Flooring for an estimate.

+ -1 moreHarry Abramson is the owner. I would never recommend them. They were awful. I was really dissatisfied and they did a terrible job. It was one headache after another. It was horrible. It was one thing after another. They didn't come for one or two days. I had to call and the guy was very rude. When they finally came out we were waiting for them and they didn't show up so I had to call again. Finally they came at 2 pm to do some work and he had to come back twice. They did a shoddy job and we were not happy. They promised they would do 2 coats of polyurethane to seal and they never came back to do that. There was a hole in the floor and they never patched that. Then they said they never said they would do that. When we ultimately moved in the floor got scratched and now we are going to have to do it again. The customer service, the technicians and the products were awful. He was charging $500 for the breakfast nook and he said that he would also do the dining room for another $100. The dining room didn't need to be done but I let him do it and now it looks really bad. He did a terrible job. I would never use them again.

+ -1 moreI needed a stair nose repaired on Engineered Natural Walnut floors. I have tried multiple hardwood floor companies before Kalley Flooring repair a broken stair nose with no success. After much failure in trying to find someone to find the wood and fix the stair, I finally called Kalley flooring. They always had confidence that they could repair the stair. And they were right. They ordered the Natural Walnut and made a custom piece to fix it. It worked out great. I was thankful for their willingness to tackle any job. The wood matches.Thank you Kalley Flooring.
