replacement windows, doors

Salespersons and management were very polite and appeared to be very knowledgeable about the products. However, follow-through was abysmal and there were multiple mistakes, some of which I am still rectifying, though no longer with Horizon. Horizon delayed placing the initial order of windows by more than a month after I thought it was going to be placed, delaying the other aspects of the remodel. The salesman advised me that the easiest and by far the less expensive route in replacing the windows was to knock out the existing windows, leaving the outer frame, and install new windows sized to fit within the old frame. This would lose me a couple inches on either side of window, but would be more structurally sound and far less expensive than entirely replacing the windows. I was also advised that, since the house was built in the 1930s, a number of the windows were custom sizes and I would need to pay extra to have windows appropriately sized. When the windows finally arrived, in fact most of them were off-the-shelf sizes, which Horizon installed, leaving gaps of up to 2" on either side which my general contractor was then told that he had to fill in, as this was not Horizon's responsibility. When I complained about the "custom" windows that I had been charged for, I was told they had ordered standard sizes in the end so that the windows would "all match." Some windows did not at all match the schematics; I was sold several windows that were supposed to be French casement (both sides hinge out, with no center divider); instead Horizon installed double-casement windows with 3" mullions in the middle. I was also charged for tempered glass on some of the windows; at least some of these were in fact regular glass and two of them cracked, ruining the seal on the argon-filled double panes. I had no way of knowing for certain if some of the other windows for which I paid for tempered glass were also just regular glass. The interior doors, which were all standard sizes, took weeks to arrive and arrived only a few at a time. One exterior door was represented to me as solid wood, but when it arrived in fact most of the door was high-end particleboard (MDF). Horizon explained to me that this was standard and "counted as real wood." I have read mixed reviews on MDF; it may or may not be as durable for exterior doors as real wood, depending on a number of factors, but that should have been explained to me rather than representing it as actual what. I had several long conversations with the salesman about door handles and lock sets for the interior doors, including separately keyed locks for a home office. I also sent an email with a careful list of the locks and how they were to be keyed. The doorknobs arrived almost 2 months late. None of them were lockable: not so much as a bathroom pushbutton lock for privacy. When I complained, the salesman made excuses, but then refused even to reorder the doorknobs & locks until all of them had been returned to Horizon to be inventoried, which took an additional couple of days. Workmanship was spotty: Two skylights leaked. A rubber seal on a very expensive custom patio door started to come loose within a year. Several doorknobs were installed upside down or backwards. At the end of the project, I just wanted to be done with Horizon. My general contractor called a different supplier near Glendale and was able to get a replacement for one of Horizon's doors within a few days and at a cheaper price (Horizon had incorrectly ordered a door and we got tired of waiting.) When the replacement doorknobs mentioned above finally arrived, they were all keyed locks, although I had again asked for pushbutton locks for the bathrooms. After a year of having guests accidentally lock themselves out of bathrooms, I ordered the pushbutton version directly from the manufacturer; they arrive in less than two weeks, when I'd waited literally months for Horizon's orders to come in. I was deeply frustrated with this whole experience and would not use Horizon again.
Description of Work: Horizon provided windows, Interior & exterior doors, and related hardware for a major remodel of a four-bedroom house in West LA.
