I called on May 31, 2022 at 4:20 PM. Mr. Steven Byroads called back on June 2, 2022 at 5 PM. He charges $350.00 just to do a consultation, assessment, and estimate. I questioned Byroads on this cost as I intend to do all of my home's windows which is in the $20,000 - $30,000 range and that there is more than enough money involved. Byroads responded said he is semi-retired and that his time is better spent doing other things. If he is going to come over and spend his time with me instead of doing other things, he needs to be paid for it. I respectfully declined. I have contacted 10 local window companies. Doctor Door and Window is the only one who asked for a fee just to make an estimate. Beats me how they achieved a 2019 Angie’s List Super Service Award.

I contracted Steven, aka Doctor Door and Window to replace all the windows on my 97 year old house. All original windows were removed and replaced with new windows. Steven assisted with the permitting process and helped to keep the replacement windows looking as similar as possible to the original windows on the house. The installation and trim out made them look like they belonged on the house. After the windows were complete, two exterior doors were replaced. The replacements function wonderfully and look appropriate for the house. In addition, Steve installed 2 storm/security doors on the the house replacing existing ones that were in horrible condition. As part of this project all exterior locks were replaced. Also Steven worked on a couple of the interior doors that did not close well and he was able to make them function properly again. Steven is a small shop contractor doing the work himself or with an additional helper. The project did take longer than expected, mostly due to delays outside of his control at the window factory. He does not work everyday which means the schedule for a larger project is spread out, but the service, knowledge, craftsmanship and quality that comes with the longer timeline, for me, far out weighs the need for speed. I would highly recommend you consider Doctor Door and Window for your next project.

Steve was probably the only craftsman who could have done our job so well. Not only were our doors old but they were curved too. He did such a good job that they were virtually airtight protecting us from smoke from a restaurant next door.

Steve is a patient and thoughtful diagnostician. It's very clear that he wants to properly determine the cause of a problem and solve it -- and it is in that way that he truly is a door and window doctor. It isn't just a cute title. My leaky window was very hard to figure out. I had several handy-men look at it as well as a trusted contractor. None of them could really tell where the water was entering from. My trusted contractor even removed the window and re-installed it. But when the next rainstorm came, it continued to leak. Steve not only re-installed the window, but he saw that there were several factors contributing to the leak and fixed them all. The result: no more leak after many rainy days since. He also did several other thoughtful adjustments to some other doors in my house in order to better weather-proof them. If you're reading this, you'll likely have had the same experience I did looking for a residential window and door repairman-- they are hard to find. Most of them only seem interested in selling you, and installing, new windows. Steve can certainly do that. And should that time come for me, he'll be my first call. But he is more concerned with fixing the problem than he is with up-selling you. Hire Steve. You won't be disappointed.

Actually, better than expected. The doors really did need serious attention which I was unable and unequipped to provide. Steve remediated the situation and then some. He's a true master of his craft and his work reflects it.

It went well. All original windows now function as news. We ordered replacement windows for one room and they match the originals perfectly and were able to be installed keeping the original frame. There was no stucco chipping at all.

Steve is a highly qualified craftsmen and carried out the work in a meticulous fashion. He had good follow through and checked in with me regularly. He was conscious of my budget and made alterations and suggestions to accommodate it. It is a pleasure working with someone who takes pride in his work. In addition, I appreciated that he pointed out other building issues that were out of his purview, that I might want to tackle later on.
Description of Work: a door was replaced, screens were replaced or reconnected, window frames were adjusted to fit properly, missing latches were found and attached, broken glass panels replaced, a broken sash window was fixed and unstuck and a lock was installed.

Steve was incredibly detailed in his work in addition to being courteous and professional. He explained all the parts needed for the job and how they functioned. The additions he made to my doors (weatherproofing, seaming) fit the decor of the house perfectly. I definitely recommend Steve for any problems you may have with doors and windows!

We contacted Steve after being referred by a friend who highly recommended his knowledge and quality of work. We have an old house full of old, large, hand-made windows and several on the lower floor had finally seen their last days after years of wear and water damage. This was a difficult pro to find, as it would require customization and dealing with our eccentrically home that does not have normal framing. We were trying to save as much money as we could and didn't want to do a lot of stucco repair, but Steve was able to fully customize the new windows so that they fit into the existing framework. The new windows are fantastic and perfect in every way. Steve did an amazing job, the quality could not have been better. He knows a TON about his craft, you will be hard pressed to find someone as friendly and knowledgable and good at what he does. As my friend told me when she recommended him - and I now tell you - he is not a speed demon. Expect things to go more slowly than you might want, but the final result is worth it. Steve will deliver.

In order to fix the screens, the doctor had to build a frame inside each window to fit the new screens. He also added crank functionality to each of these windows to make them open and close properly. The results are great. We know have modern functionality without compromising the original look of the wooden windows. We also had to outright replace several wooden windows that had fallen apart over the years from weather abuse. These new windows look great and the price was reasonable. Overall, we liked working with Steven (the doctor) and we are very pleased with the result. He was punctual, professional and delivered on what he promised.
Description of Work: We live in a home built in 1923. All of the windows have built in pull down screens. Half of them work, the other half don't, and that is where the Doctor comes in.

This is a small company and so the Doctor has a full schedule. But he does his best to fit you into his schedule. He is incredibly knowledgable about doors, door frames, hinges, locks, window refurbishment, etc. When I have the spare change I'm going to get him to restore the windows in my 1922 house. Great company and great proprietor.

Called Steve, set up appointment, he completed a very thorough evaluation, sent me a quote, I hired them, they did wonderful work, I paid them and that was it.
Description of Work: We have a 1924 home in the Hancock Park area with all original windows and doors. Steve and his team did a wonderful job restoring them! The windows are now waterproof (not the case before) and windproof, and the doors open and shut properly. Window work included the following - Aligning, drilling drain channels, installing drip moulding (custom made wood, not store bought plastic), installing surface bolts, installing Q-Lon weatherstripping and more. Door work included aligning, shaving, caulking and lubricating hinges. Steve is a true craftsman. He and his team are professional, clean, prompt and friendly. I recommend them highly.

Steven really is the door and window doctor! Living in an older, imperfect home, I am constantly dealing with misaligned doors, funky locks, settling issues, etc. I called to see if my broken front door latch could be repaired, but was secretly hoping for an easy replacement since the old unit was ugly and worn. Steven gave me a mini-primer on lockset construction and function, and offered several valuable tips on related issues I've been having. The man knows EVERYTHING! He deftly replaced the door latch and also the old deadbolt, which wasn't broken but looked awful once I saw it next to the fresh new door latch. Steven has a nice eye for aesthetics, offering me a choice of units that complemented our architecture and style. I will not hesitate to call him with my next door or window issue, and finding him was a terrific introduction for me to Angie's List.

You get what you pay for with Doctor Door which is perfect work. Everything that he did was perfect, which is hard to do because I live in an old funky house and nothing is straight. The doors fit and work perfectly. I am constantly broke so we was willing to work with me on the price, even let me knock off some money when i offered to take the old doors down myself (yes I'm that broke). But I like things done well and done well the first time and Doctor Door was my man. I know a few people who have used him and every job from mine which was straight forward to my friend's who had more of a restoration/high end project was completed without flaw.
Description of Work: He sourced the doors and the dog doors for me, installed the dog doors into the doors and then installed the doors. I also had him install a screen door.

Faced with smashed french doors sporting broken window panes I called a number of repair people knowing I was in for a big bill. Each person said he or she could do the job and would have been able to repair a modern mass-produced product but this case called for restoration as well as repair. I found found Steve Byroads, AKA Dr. Door and Window, through word of mouth. Steve specializes in old and unusual work and was familiar with our 1920s doors. He presented options, all appropriate to the architecture of the house. Rather than selecting an exact replication I selected a single door replacement that did not have to be hand-made. The job still required a great deal of hand work and days of labor. Steve selected and installed matching hardware, keying the handle to the rest of the locks. His painter perfectly matched the old doors and managed to get the job done by return visits due to pouring rain which slowed the drying process. Elsewhere in the house Steve realigned a couple of sagging doors and repaired a broken hinge. This is who to call when you need a fine craftsman. The price is more than fair. He is a complete gentleman who loves his craft and produces quality work. Both men were immaculate in their work and cleanliness on the job site. The end product was handsome and it actually improved the house. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: In a condensed explanation: Steve replaced antique french doors, hardware, repaired broken hinges and re-aligned doors. He installed the new hardware and keyed the lock. His painter professionally painted and reproduced the house colors for the new door.
