Our home addition project began in Fall, 2017 and was completed at the end of May, 2018. Overall Shai Butel and his team did a fabulous job. The addition is beautiful and we've received many compliments. We had used Butel Construction once before for a much smaller project--a partial bathroom remodel. So when it came time to do this very big project, we knew we wanted to work with Butel again. Shai does things by the book--no skimping on quality, and no shortcuts. We had some issues with old lead paint on the outside trim which had to be removed before repainting. We are confident that there will be no problems with this because Shai made sure it was dealt with appropriately, using trained professionals. Shai was always willing to work with us, listen to our ideas and what we wanted, and was an excellent problem solver. We were able to live in our home during the entire project, thanks to some creative partitioning and timing. One of the big advantages of working with Butel Construction is that they have all the relevant professionals and subcontractors on the team. We worked with Shai's architect instead of having to do that separately , which probably would have cost more. Also, all the various crews were ready to go, which meant demolition, foundation, framing, stucco, painting, etc. went smoothly and quickly. In fact we were shocked at how quickly the basic construction was completed. We were able to move into the new part of the house exactly when Shai had estimated we would! There were, of course, unexpected additional costs, such as an extra electric subpanel upgrading in the garage and the need to replace some existing flooring, but Shai did his best to contain those costs. He even did some of the extra work without extra charges when it was well beyond what we had planned for or anticipated. We really appreciated the way Shai and his manager, Miguel, kept in touch with us by text and phone. We pretty much always knew what was going to happen and when, and they were both quite prompt at answering the multitude of questions we had. It was very reassuring. We did have to keep on top of the details and do some reminding, but that's true of any big contracting job. A big shout out to Jose, the assistant manager, who was always available for detail work, such as installing a new doorbell or outdoor lighting, and was just delightful to work with. The crews did a pretty good job of cleaning up throughout the project, especially inside. However, at the very end they fell down on the job a bit, which was really our only complaint. They did not do as thorough a job of cleaning around our pool area, which meant we kept finding bits of stucco, nails, & screws in areas where we sometimes walk barefoot. We would definitely work with Butel Construction again, and probably will. They are not inexpensive, but we got our money's worth. We feel as if we are living in a brand new home!

After previous experience with other contractors, I was nervous when we decided to remodel our home and truthfully, expected the worst. I had no reason to be concerned with Butel Construction. Shai Butel and his team were professional, responsive, capable, respectful and kind. Our home turned out perfectly. We are beyond thrilled and referred Butel to our friend who remodeled her home and is also delighted. Shai and his team are like family now and come to assist us anytime we need them - even small jobs. Here are some examples of what made Butel Construction the best company to work with: 1. Shai is a man of his word. 2. Shai's team are artisans - really. Every effort is made to make everything the best it could be. No short cuts. 3. They started on time and ENDED ON TIME! 4. There were no upcharges that we did not ask for. 5. The team respected our home, our comfort and our pets. 6. They helped us design an amazing custom bathroom. 7. And when things went wrong, as they always do in a large project, there was no finger pointing. Everything was handled with grace and respect. 8. My only concern was that the project manager might take our dog home. They loved each other. ;) Butel will be back next year to finish remodeling the house! That is the highest recommendation. (My photos are not great, but Butel Construction was!)

Five stars! Easily! Could be even more (if yelp would let me). Two bathrooms done, new tiles, new fixtures; in the master bathroom that meant going down to the studs and rebuilding the whole shower... Every single person from Butel Constr. was a delight to work with the whole time. The finished renovation is so beautiful and striking that everybody says "I want that!" Do I need to say that they kept to the time frame and the budget? Yes, because that's so important too! All in all, I can't praise Shai and his team high enough and would recommend them to anybody who is looking for excellent work at a competitive price. Or, as my husband said: Echoing my wife here. Butel is never going to be the lowest bidder for anything, but the value is unquestionable. Once the contracts are signed, the work goes along as planned and on budget. Every one of Shai's team are professional and experts in their area. The final results are stunning. So...on time, on budget, to code and beautiful work. Can't ask for anything more.

This is the second property we have used Butel Construction to remodel. In both instances we were very happy with the work, The owner, Shai, and our project manager, Miguel, were both very responsive. The crew including Jose and Angel paid close attention to detail and were not satisfied until the job was done properly. On a couple of occasions I changed my mind regarding details of the project and despite being in the middle of the work, my requests were fulfilled with a smile.

I couldn't be happier! Every time I’m in either bath I admire the expert craftsmanship. The contractor, Shai Butel, is professional, reliable, smart, capable, and easy to talk to. He listened to ideas and gave possible options, but did not pressure me to do it one way or the other. He explained where there might be something behind the wall that would hinder my ideas, but he'd find a way to make it work and he did. His tile guy is a skilled artisan. He had several odd spaces to cover and he did it with perfection. His foremen are very responsive and agreeable. Everyone uses texts to communicate and the texts are replied to immediately or at least on the same day. They covered the floors with ram board and hung plastic to block the dust. The photos tell the whole story on the final product. I have contracted the company to do further renovations on my unit by installing recessed lighting throughout, paint all the rooms, change the door hinges and handles, and a few other miscellaneous items.

Shai and his team recently completed a 450 sq ft addition on my house. Along the way, we decided to have new siding done, new A/C, attic insulation, painted entire exterior, cool roof, and expanded front patio. Shai is trustworthy, fair, very accessible when you need to discuss things along the way, and a genuinely nice guy. As construction can be stressful when you're living at your home, especially with having young children, he and his team were very accomodating with any changes we needed to make along the way to make sure our family was as comfortable as possible. He is great with problem solving and coming up with other ideas to accomplish the look that you want for your home. We were referred to Shai by neighbors, and my husband and I have referred him as well as we had such a great experience with him. We would hands down call Shai again if we were to build on more to our house again in the future.

Butel construction was one of 3 contractors we met with and they were the obvious choice. Their bid was fair and -- even more importantly -- the bid was very thorough. Other bids were less detailed and we could not be sure what we were being charged for. They walked us through the work schedule, possibilities and were spot on with timing prediction, and were responsive and efficient through out the process. Shai and Miguel were lovely to work with, making us feel comfortable and updating us daily via text. The beam replacement was a big project for us as new home owners and Butel Construction's reliability, friendliness and trustworthiness made a big difference. I have already recommended them to many friends and will definitely be using them for our next home project!

Shai and Miguel were great to work with, along with the vast majority of his subcontractors. We are thrilled with the completed project. Things didn’t always go accordingly to plan (and sometimes I made mistakes with decisions I made), but they always made it right. I’d definitely recommend them. Very fair/competitive pricing.

I am still gushing to anyone who will listen about how pleased I am. I had a lot of trouble finding a contractor; they disappeared, didn't end up having the liscense or insurance my building requires, and some just lied. A neighbor finished with his kitchen before I could get started. I asked about his contractor. Shai got my job going in a week. He did everything he said he would do, when he said it would do it, for the price we agreed on. This alone is amazing. Something got done every day and the job was fineshed on schedule. My neighbor's also let me know that even when I wasn't there my contractor was. He checked on my job most days. And I also heard how courteous and respectful all the subs were. And I can't say enough about how good the whole team was. I know they do bigger projects than mine but they treated my job like it was really important. They showed up everyday in every sense of those words. They worked with bad colds to keep my job on time, and they did great work. The only mistakes were mine, and they were just lovely about correcting things and solving problems with no drama. When Julio was installing cabinets I suggested that some little thing might not show too much, but he wiggled his eyebrows at me and said "that's not how we do things, we do it the right way", and he took stuff down and redid it. With a great attitude. I had to add on some painting work and I was initially a little annoyed about the extra money. Then Matteo showed up and did the work. I thought some guy would come and slap some paint on the wall and ceiling. Matteo doesn't slap paint on anything. I think his work is worth every penny and then some. And the tile was very important to me. I wanted it to look really good. And Angel is really an artist as well as a perfectionist craftsman. I think of all these guys everyday as I live with their labor. I know they do this every day, but I had never done anything like this project, and to me it seemed like they made magic. I haven't come close to mentioning all the people who contributed, from the demolition, electrical, plumbing, cleaning(!), and Jose and Miguel supervising the circus. I can't overstate how much I came to appreciate the team that Shai Butel has created. I have a few more things I want to do and I will not bother to look anywhere else. I'll just call Shai. At the beginning so he can prevent my mistakes.

The project went very smoothly. Butel gave us an accurate price quote with a progress payment schedule at the beginning of the project. We changed a few things throughout the project but we essentially came in on budget. The quality of the work was great. We had a couple things that needed to get fixed a few weeks after the project finished and Butel was very responsive and quick to fix them at no additional charge.

Over all they did a good job, there were a few hiccups, but I think that always happens. They are very responsive and easy to get in touch with. They stand behind their work and come back to fix things, even after they have been paid.

We used Butel Construction for our kitchen remodel and additional upgrading of our condo. Now, every day, we look at our new kitchen and smile. We were extremely pleased with the quality of work and professionalism. After meeting with over a dozen different contractors, and not being pleased, we found Butel Construction on Angie's list. First, we met with Tom. Immediately, we had a good feeling. He listened to our plans and presented a detailed estimate that covered everything we needed ahead of the timeline he gave us. He even presented two different options for kitchen cabinets. Now that is good customer service! After signing on, Shai, our contractor, worked with us throughout the remodel. We felt like we won the lottery! Before even getting started, Shai helped to get the architect's plans completed. He went above and beyond to get the plans submitted and approved by the city. Now that is good customer service! Shai and Miguel, Project Manager, were readily available to go over everything and discuss any questions along the way. Shai was very sensitive to our needs and always responded with a positive, calm attitude. We expected surprises, given the fact we were remodeling an older 3rd floor condo. This involved taking out walls, removing flooring, painting, putting in recessed lighting, heating, and more throughout the unit. However, Shai was on top of things and worked with us to make the best decisions. We always felt he had our best interests at heart. The team of workers were amazing. They all worked quickly and efficiently; cleaning up every day. We have a lot of HOA restrictions, and they made sure they followed all the rules. We cannot imagine going through this process with any other contractor. We highly recommend them for your remodeling needs. Thank you Shai, Miguel, and the rest of the Butel team. I liked working with them. There were some problems with leaking after the roof was done, and they worked with me until they found the problem. They must have tried fixing it 5 times and did not charge me.

We were impressed with the quality, responsiveness, timeliness, and professionalism of Shai and his team in the case of both projects. Shai maintains very good relationships with his staff and subcontractors and expects (and gets) a high level of quality from them. Both projects came in remarkably close to their original estimated costs, with changes resulting not from anything on Butel's part, but because of unexpected requirements (the City wanted an electrical panel moved) or by changes we requested. The City of West Hollywood's building inspectors said they were impressed with the team's work. We hope to work with Butel Construction again on future projects for our home.

We hired Butel for a major renovation of our home, including a complete kitchen remodel, two bathroom remodels, new floors, and a new deck. We looked at 3 other contractors and felt that estimate provided by Butel was the most detailed and professional. Shai, the owner, is an extremely honest person who charges fair prices. They are not the cheapest, but they are also not the most expensive. At your first meeting, Tom will come and do a detailed review of the work you want performed. At this meeting, Tom had the great idea of completely moving the location of the master bath and closet to more efficiently use the space in our master bedroom. The other contractors did not make this suggestion and we greatly appreciated Tom's input and ideas. After the contract is signed, Shai takes over. Shai oversees the projects overall, but day-to-day, we had a project manager, Miguel, on site. Both Shai and Miguel are extremely responsive and professional. Shai went to the site almost daily during the most critical phase of the project. We worked closely for over 6 months. As with all construction projects, unexpected issues will come up and things will get delayed and it is often stressful. Shai and his team did their best to complete the job on time and resolve problems as they arose. If something new needed to be added to the job, we always received a new detailed addition to the contract. As for the subcontactors used by Shai, some are better than others. Angel, the tile guy, is extremely detailed oriented and did a wonderful job tiling our kitchen, fireplace, and bathrooms. The people who installed our floors also did a great job. The painters were not good. We had to have them come back multiple times to do touch ups and I am still unhappy with some of it, as there are many uneven spots and the paint is cracking in some places. One other minor complaint is that once 90-95% of the job is finished, it is sometimes difficult to get the small details and handyman-type issues fixed. After 9 months of living here, we have small issues like towel rack is now falling off the wall. Those are some of the small details that can be improved, but we are extremely happy overall with the quality of the work. We have recommended Butel to our friends and family and We have plans in 2017 to have Butel renovation our garage.

Butel Construction not only made our once-seemingly-too-ambitious remodel possible (other contractors' bids were at least 50% more expensive), but they basically ended up demo'ing our house and building a brand new 2 story house from ground and up without changing the initial budget on the contract. Of course we spent way over the original budget, but mostly due to us requesting additional features, like slicker staircases, skylights and and bigger windows etc. I should also add that their estimate on the schedule was fairly accurate besides the time we had to wait for new engineering plan and manufacturing of custom windows. This was helpful since we had to coordinate a rental house during the construction. There is so much to remodeling non-professionals like us will have to learn as the project unfolds, and it can be draining both mentally and physically. I felt so lucky to be working with Shai because not only him and his team were very capable, but also I found Shai's straightforward, honest and positive attitude almost therapeutic. Throughout the entire project duration Shai was always available, engaging, open-minded and sensitive to our various needs while keeping the project under control and on budget by using well-priced vendors and materials and making well-educated suggestions. Most of his workers were highly professional and pleasant and they all seem to share respect and affection for Shai, which I thought said a lot about how the company operates. Even though we were ecstatic when we got to move back into the new house, I was a bit sad that my daily communication with Shai and his guys were coming to an end :'-( I believe the project could have been a lot more stressful, if not impossible, if it weren't for Butel Construction and I would happily go through it all over again with them if another opportunity presents itself in the future!!

We had an excellent experience with Butel Construction. We hired them to lead the remodel of our condo, a 1,000 sq. ft. space in West LA. They made great modern updates, worked well and quickly, and the result was our condo eventually selling for 10% above asking price.

Last year I wrote a review of Shai Butel's work on my house that included remodeling the garage and remodeling two bathrooms.
I concluded the review by writing: "The usual question here is, would I use the company again. The answer is yes and, in fact, they are about to begin renovating my kitchen. I hope I will be able to post a similarly enthusiastic review in the not-too-distant future."
Well, it's a year later, so I'm overdue, but the kitchen and laundry room renovations were as successful and satisfying as the earlier
remodeling job. From planning the new kitchen -- where Shai and Tom had better ideas for the design than we did -- to the choice of appliances to the staging and scheduling of the work -- everything went smoothly and the results were exactly as I hoped.
The timing worked out pretty much precisely as Shai predicted -- none of the last minute delays that folks report with other contractors -- in part because of his ability to weave together the contributions of the different specialists [framing, tiling -- outstanding work once again!, plumbing, electricity, painting, etc.]. When there were minor problems after the job was completed [one low voltage light fixture not working well] they were taken care of quickly.
No surprise, I have since employed Shai for additional jobs -- replacing a back-garden gate, etc, -- and I am now discussing some
other work.

The project went very well. Butel Construction does excellent quality work. We have worked with them numerous times (did a full master bathroom remodel a few years ago) & have always been very happy with their work!
Shai Butel, the owner, is very personable, accommodating, & attentive. He is accessible (actually answers his phone when you call OR calls you back promptly if he misses you.). He goes above & beyond to make sure his clients are satisfied. During this last project, we originally picked a paint color for the bathroom that we ended up hating. Shai was very understanding & allowed us to pick a different color. He had his painter repaint the bathroom at no additional cost.
Butel also stands behind their work. If there is anything that breaks, or isn't done to perfection, they will come back & make sure it's fixed/adjusted properly. Their quality of work is exceptional.
Although the kitchen took longer than expected (partially due to the time of year. We began our project right after Thanksgiving), we were very pleased with the results.
We would highly recommend Butel Construction, Inc. for any renovation or remodel projects you might be considering.
Shai Butel, the owner, is very personable, accommodating, & attentive. He is accessible (actually answers his phone when you call OR calls you back promptly if he misses you.). He goes above & beyond to make sure his clients are satisfied. During this last project, we originally picked a paint color for the bathroom that we ended up hating. Shai was very understanding & allowed us to pick a different color. He had his painter repaint the bathroom at no additional cost.
Butel also stands behind their work. If there is anything that breaks, or isn't done to perfection, they will come back & make sure it's fixed/adjusted properly. Their quality of work is exceptional.
Although the kitchen took longer than expected (partially due to the time of year. We began our project right after Thanksgiving), we were very pleased with the results.

These guys are totally awesome. They gave me a contract tailored to my description of the project. The cost was very competitive. They gave me a week by week schedule. They are right on schedule. The quality of the work has been impeccable and to the highest standards. We only had one change order that was indeed something that neither of us had anticipated. The cost of the change order was very reasonable. I am a very hands-on type person. The guys worked closely with me, solicited my input on every important decision. This is long overdue (I though I'd already submitted a review, but apparently had not) but we were very pleased with the work of Shai and his team last summer (2015). This was the second project we've done with Butel, the first being when they came in to repair the work of a disastrous (non-Angie's List) contractor on our master bathroom (the review of which is later in this list). With this most recent project, we had gotten a quote from another contractor, which was a little lower than Butel's, but given the past experience with Shai, we were more comfortable that his price would be the actual price, so decided to pay a little more. Shai proved us right in that there were a number of challenges with even this small project, and despite some issues along the way (e.g., the mud didn't set right and a crack appeared in the bathroom wall perhaps 4-6 weeks after the project), Shai always went out of his way to ensure we were satisfied with the final results (e.g., with the mud crack, he had someone out the day after we called, and they came back the following day to repair/repaint - no questions asked). The only change orders were for items we required that were not originally discussed, and even in those cases, the changes were for materials, not labor, as Shai was able to absorb any additional work, such as when we talked about the type of door and window molding we wanted, which was originally going to be fairly simple, but evolved into a multi-piece craftsman style that turned out beautifully. I know it took longer to do the molding than he planned, but we had worked out the specifics and he agreed they could do it, and we couldn't be happier. The project did take longer than was originally forecast, which I would probably focus on in our next project with Butel (as I'm sure there will be a third and fourth etc. as we identify new projects) so that expectations are aligned. I would also stress communication up front and throughout the project, as there were a few hiccups that I think could have been avoided. I try not to micromanage, but in my opinion it was helpful on days when I could be home to point out things and ask questions along the way, rather than hope that the instructions provided were clear only to find out three steps later than something needed to be fixed. Bottom line, my wife and I like Shai and the team members who have worked on our projects, and we trust him and his company. We know when we start that we'll be happy when we finish, which is the majority of what I expect from any contractor.
