Description of Work: We enrolled in the home preservation service, with quarterly visits to perform routine maintenance. We've only had one quarterly service so far, and so far, so good - they are knowledgeable and help with a lot of the things we simply don't have the time or expertise to fix.

+ -1 moreI hired Home Preservation after reading a fairly extensive article about them in the SF Chronicle. I was a new home owner and am (shamefully) hopeless about DIY stuff. Don't want to do it, don't want to learn how to do it, and, most importantly, simply won't do it. What H/P does is take the burden off me. That alone is worth the cost of the service. I am confident that my house will not fall down on my head because every aspect of it is checked and tweaked 4x year. I just refinanced it and the guy who came in to inspect the house on behalf of the new lender noted that it was and quot;well maintained.and quot; I can assure you that his assessment had nothing to do with me, and everything to do with the nice folks at H/P.
Description of Work: First: "Handyman" isn't the right category but nothing else was available. What Home Preservation does is do an initial assessment of the condition of your home, with tiered recommendations on what should be attended to first, and then come in 4 times a year to do routine maintenance (using a very long checklist) such as cleaning out furnace filters, draining the water heater, changing the smoke alarm batteries, checking all appliances, inspecting the roof, cleaning out gutters, inspecting the fireplace and cleaning up accumulated ash, etc. They also do special projects (fixing broken shutters, replacing poorly hung doors, taking rugs out for repair and returning them) on request. Generally, these projects are not billed separately but included in the quarterly fee. Obviously, major work would be billed but they are flexible on these definitions and also offer to trade one of the quarterly visits for a major project at no extra cost. I've used them since 2003 (or so) and have always had the same two technicians. That alone is pretty astounding. They both are reliable, polite, professional, and prompt.

+ -1 moreThis service really didn't work out the way I planned. My home is worth about $500K, and I think this service is intended for homes of at least $2M or more. During the expensive quarterly visits, the personnel did not have the tools and materials to make needed repairs on my house. I also contracted through HPS to have some plumbing work done. That plumber ended up breaking our dryer and HPS was obnoxious when I asked them to take responsibility. (Ken Spratt was the person I dealt with.) This was when I knew I had contracted with the wrong company. Other than the initial visit, I didn't get the feeling that the quarterly visit personnel were truly checking my house for problems. Instead of using a service like HPS, I would recommend following a standard home maintenance plan yourself, and use Angie's list to find reputable contractors. Or at least find some handyman company with more integrity than HPS.
Description of Work: I took their Home Preservation Service for two years. The system they offer is explained at http://www.homepreservation.com/. It was expensive. For my home of 1500 sq. ft., it was about $3K per year just for the quarterly inspection visits. Any significant repairs were separate.

+ -1 moreI have used this company for years and they do everything, they come quarterly and see what needs to be done. No matter what it is they do a great job every time. They are reliable and honest and I always have the same team of people that come each time and I like that. They are easy to deal with and are always on time and I won't deal with anyone else for anything I need. They charge quarterly and are a little expensive but are worth it.
Description of Work: These people are like general handy men they do everything, they have done the following. Flush hot water tank, cleaned the gutters, replaced the boards on the deck, replaced screens in the windows, replaced all the batteries in the smoke detectors.
