Description of Work: Called to get an estimate. I told the person taking the intake that I wanted to do a "face-lift" for my kitchen and two bathrooms. There would be no walls removed just updating tile and countertops and painting. I wanted to get an estimate as to how much the whole project would cost or if we needed to do a phase 1 and a phase 2. I said my max budget was 40k at this time. An estimate time and date was set up but I got a call back that the contractor would not come for an estimate because he could not complete my project on budget. I don't understand why we could not get a estimate to see if we needed to do phase 1 and phase 2 like I told the lady on the phone.

The project went smoothly. It started with the removal of all fixtures and drywall in the bathroom. Then a little framing for the new shower, followed by hot mopping the shower basin. Then the tile work started. We tiled the entire room (except for the ceiling, which got new drywall). The tile took two or three weeks, as it was a lot of work. They started with the shower, then moved to the floor tiles, and finally did the tiles on the walls. Then the cabinets and vanity were installed, and the plumber came back and did the final plumbing work. The shower enclosure is thick, clear glass and that was installed towards the end of the job. The ceiling was painted, as well as the walls in the sitting room. The whole thing took about five weeks, and every step went smoothly.
Description of Work: A large bathroom in our home was remodeled, as well as an adjacent room which we wanted to turn into a TV room/sitting room. The old bathroom was demolished down to the studs. The shower was enlarged, a new vanity was installed, the toilet was moved, and a new closet was installed. We put tile on the walls and new tile on the floor, and can lighting in the ceiling, as well as a whisper-quiet Panasonic exhaust fan. In the sitting room we installed new baseboards, door casings, crown molding and ceiling can lights. The walls and ceiling were textured and the room was painted. We did the same in the foyer which is adjacent to the TV room. The bathroom was the main focus of this project, and it turned out great. My wife and I designed it and picked out the tiles, and the whole thing feels like a bathroom in some high-end hotel!

I am writing this review only in response to the fact that nobody was able to show up at the appointment time even though the time was set a week prior. To provide full disclosure, I did receive phone calls an hour or so before the appointment to notify me of the possibility that he could not make it out but I feel that was insufficient time. He apologized for the missed appointment and I'm sure he was busy, but the experience was disappointing none-the-less.

I apologize for missing any appointment. Unfortunately circumstances sometimes impact my schedule adversly (like waiting for City Inspectors). We were in communication several times that day. I did call as soon as I knew I would not be able to make the scheduled appointment, in fact I kept giving the member updates as to the status of my inspection right up to the point I had to cancel.

Responded and showed up promptly when contacted for an estimate.Contributed input and ideas to the design process.Communications were clear and prompt throughout the process. The work started on time.Work crews were always punctual and polite. The house was left as clean as possible at the end of each work day and either Mike or an assistant personally checked on progress and cleanup each afternoon. There were a few bumps along the way, but problems were always handled quickly and professionally. We're thrilled with the end product. A beautiful new kitchen exactly to our specifications.

Mr. Baum was on-time, and explained the work involved. His bid was pretty good but we ended up going with another contractor. Our choice had little to do with Mr. Baum and we'd call him for a bid on other projects.

Mike was in constant contact every day of the project, and stopped by the house almost every day to chat with me and make sure the work was progressing. He obtained the permits from city hall, and was here when each inspector came by. There was no downtime for inspections or permits. He listened to my input and the room is just how my wife and I wanted it. Every contractor he brought in to do each stage was professional and on-time. I would highly recomend Mike to anyone else needing similar services. In fact, a neighbor has hired him to do an add-on on her house, and I've given Mike's contact info to two other friends.
Description of Work: This was the biggest home improvement project we had ever done. It involved demolishing an old sunroom and putting in its place a 'real' room that is a little larger. The old sunroom had thin walls, drafty windows and an aluminum roof. It was hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and was basically unused space in our home. Mike managed the entire project from design to completion and we are very happy with the new room, which is now our home office.

Our old patio cover was rotting, termite-ridden and ready to fall down. We liked the way it looked and wanted to replace it. We looked at various alternatives and decided to have it redone as it was (wood, rather than vinyl). Mike's estimate was very much in line with the others, but much more detailed. He always returned my e-mails promptly and was very professional. Good reports here and elsewhere on the web made me decide to go with him. Mike's crew began the work on time, worked steadily, neatly and politely, and finished on time. They also cleaned up thoroughly when they were done. The new cover is beautiful and looks like the old one as we wished. It is also better built and will last longer since the problems that led to the rot and termites have been eliminated. We are very satisfied with Mike's work.

Mike Baum met with us to discuss the project, and was very professional and straightforward. One week later he submitted a clear and detailed proposal. He used subcontractors solely. Once the project started he was present daily, at the beginning and end of the day, and he was accessible any other time we wished. Along the way there were work quality and professionalism issues with one of his subcontractors; in most cases Mike had them rectified. Mike's services included - helping design the project, procuring the appropriate subcontractors, supervising and coordinating subcontractors, being the point person for all communications, overall making sure the job was being done properly. His services aren't cheap, but with projects that are somewhat complex and require coordination, his services may be valuable to some clients. They were to us. Our downgrades for punctuality and professionalism reflect our experience with the subcontractors. For Mike alone, grades for both of those categories would be "A".

We have hired him and he will be starting soon. He came promptly; he was here the next day after our call.
Description of Work: Baum Construction & Development gave us an estimate for fixing a shower enclosure.
This was my first experience working with a contractor, after hearing and reading many scary stories, I made the decision to call Mike and I'm glad I did. What impressed me the most with Mike, was how thorough his Bid and contract were written, every detail was covered, and Mike answered all of my questions. Mike and his team did a fabulous job, each team (demo crew, framers, electricians, etc., that came through were thoughtful, clean and did a great job. Also, a huge plus, Mike was present throughout the entire job, either in person or on the phone, making sure everything was being done and done right. I would definitely use Mike for further projects and highly recommend his to anyone seeking a contractor.
Description of Work: Mike came to our recently purchased home for a bedroom remodel as well as work in our back yard. Mike & his team removed french doors in the master bedroom and replaced them with two windows, we had a long sliding closet door in the master bedroom with wasted space at both ends of the closet, Mike helped us by taking turning the dead space into beautiful built in shelves and desk space at both ends of the closet. The closet and built-ins look like they have always been there, he matched the trim and look to match existing style in our room. Outside, Mike removed cement steps that were once outside of the french doors as well as remove a large cement patio area we wished to later turn into a grassy area. He also put in an exterior door to the back of our garage so that we could access the garage from our back yard. There were several stages to the work completed including demolition and removal of debris, drywall (interior & exterior), electrical, cabinet work, removal of a door, installation of door and windows, painting interior and exterior, stucco work (including matching the existing trim around our windows and doors to our new windows and door.

Mike did a fabulous job on our house in Long Beach. Mike started with a very detailed proposal itemizing everything that was to be done. We live 65 miles away so we couldn't be there everyday to monitor the subcontractors coming in and out. After signing on with him, he then gave us an Excel spreadsheet with everything to be done line by line. Each item had notes attached to it with more detail. There was an extra column for cost overruns. He gave us a budget for each item - i.e., a light fixture, and how much was allotted to spend on that fixture. I went to Lowe's to pick out the light fixtures and emailed him the model number. He would either buy the fixture and count that into the money on his spreadsheet, or I would buy it and drop it off at the house. He was great about communicating via email and texting which I very much appreciated. He was very nice about my bringing in other people to work on the house besides him. He left it open when I said I had someone else I might want to do the floors. I ended up going with his subcontractors on almost everything. The sink refinisher did an excellent job on the kitchen sink. The electrician was great. The sprinkler guy did a great job of adding on to our existing electronic sprinklers. His wood contractors did exceptional work on our wood damage. I've had other contractors try to do this stuff and it's never been as nice as Mike's work. The hardwood floors he did are stunning! And the tile in a bathroom came out just right. He was great about last minute changes. I added on all sorts of things as the project moved along and he was very gracious and accommodating for all of them. He was great about working with our weird schedule too. Mike is a landlord himself, and we were fixing up to rent, so he knew all the things we needed to do in order for the house to be ready to rent. His plumber was fabulous. We had a new shower hardware and internals installed – new faucets, new toilet, etc. The acid wash of the tile looked very good. His plaster guy was fabulous too. He also installed a new water heater door outside which was very nicely done. After he was done, we went through the house and created a list of little things we wanted fixed, and he fixed all of them except for one thing that we took care of. Mikes worker's were neat, cleanup was great, painting was nicely done. I especially liked the way they painted the cupboards and shelves. His wood work overall was exceptional. Mike even threw in some extras for free at the end of the project. Everything was done in an extremely timely manner - faster than I could keep up with. He provided lien releases after payments. Mike was not cheap but he is worth every penny. I only know this after dealing with other general contractors in the past. I would hire Mike again if I had another big project in the LA area.
Description of Work: We did bathroom remodeling, replaced kitchen appliances, fixed electrical issues, upgraded sprinkler system, fixed wood damage, refinished hardwood floors, tiled, replaced a doorbell, new light fixtures, etc. We installed all new mirrors and medicine cabinets in the bathrooms, replaced all door and cabinet hardware. Upgraded washer/dryer cabinets and housing, new floor in kitchen, new tiled front porch, upgraded sprinklers, fixed indoor/outdoor wood damage, painted interior/exterior, some new plumbing fixtures, electrical problems diagnosed and fixed, gas leak fixed, side gates fixed, new carpeting, replaced doorbell and light fixtures, fixed side gates, replaced outside water heater door and framing, all new vent covers, all new electrical cover, new GFI plugs in kitchen and bathrooms. He seemed okay when he came out but he told us he would get the quote in a week and it ended up being much past that so we definitely decided to go with someone else. The interaction with them was very brief, maybe 10 minutes. We really couldn?t get much of a vibe in 10 minutes; he was just in and out very quickly. The interaction was extremely brief and a very quick look; no measurements were taken at all. It took him more than the allotted time that he said to get the estimate. It took him longer than that to get it to us. He was here on time.
Description of Work: We had someone come out for an estimate but decided against them. We weren’t very pleased. It took the approximately a week and a half to get us a very simple estimate and we had gotten numerous estimates before he ever got the numbers back to us. The estimate was for replacing windows and painting the house. Not really a remodel, just putting in vinyl energy-efficient windows and painting the exterior of the house.

The job included stuccoing in one opening ,cutting in another where it didn't exist currently, and having a new window frame built to match the existing. I do not dispute the length of time it took to prepare the quote; I only point out it was not as straight forward as stated. It was necessary to solicit several sub contractor bids prior to my quote. Did it take longer then I expected? Yes. Could I have been in better communication? Yes. I take full responsibility for this interaction and make a commitment to have better / clearer communications in the future. In retrospect, this job was outside my normal operations and I should have declined the job at the initial meeting saving the customer time and energy.

In short, Mike is a straightforward man, detail-oriented, and responsive with regards to communication. My not choosing Mike was solely due to my budget constraint. Mike works with subcontractors, and they appear to make a strong team; however, the total estimate is just higher than my maximum limit. After the initial consultation, because of the scope of the project (remodeling about 75-80% of a 3000+ sqft house, over $200K), Mike assembled all of his subcontractors for a walk-through of my house, so that everyone has a chance to be familiar with the project and to give his (all men, so no "his/her" =) best estimate. I had a chance to meet & talk with all the principal subs, and developed high confidence in them, and with the comfort of knowing that Mike is the liaison. Following this, Mike gave me the most detailed proposal of all the bidding contractors, itemizing everything line by line. This is as clear-cut as it gets, folks. I believe that had my budget allowed me to choose Mike, I would feel very comfortable with the whole project. I strongly recommend Mike Baum.
Description of Work: Unfortunately, I end up not going with Mike Baum due to my budget constraint. However, I take the initiative to write this positive report for Mike because I think Mike would deliver what he promises. My experience with Mike during the initial consultation to the bidding, short of the project itself, was very positive.
Working with Mike was a great experience from start to finish. One of the reasons we picked him was based on the level of detail in his initial estimate. While most of the other contractors gave us a brief description of the work to be done with a limited breakdown of costs, Mike provided us with a detailed spreadsheet that contained each and every line item, activity and material and what it would cost. This gave us a lot of confidence that we'd stay on budget, and also helped us to make decisions in terms of what to keep in the project and what to take out. Mike was very responsive and easy to work with. I'd often send him e-mails with questions or requests for changes on weekends or evenings. I didn't need or expect to get a response right away, but Mike often responded within an hour or so. Once we got underway Mike was on top of everything, stopping in regularly to check on the status of the work and make sure everything was progressing smoothly. The quality of the work was great, we're thrilled with our new family room. Paint, molding and woodwork are flawless- you can hardly tell that it is the same room we started with. In terms of costs, we made a few changes along the way, but, even given that, still came in within a few $100's of the proposed amount, no more than 2-3% over our budget (and all based on additions or changes that we requested). Great experience, highly recommended, will use again for future projects.
Description of Work: Finished basement- Demolition of existing (non-structural) walls, framing, drywall, electrical, crown molding and paint, new staircase with custom woodwork. Basically took an exiting concrete room and turned it into a family area/TV room.

We haven?t finalized as to who we are going to use to get the work done. We have just dealt with Mr. Baum and he made a great presentation. He was very nice, helpful and prompt. We are not sure if we are going to go with his bid. He came on 27th of April and gave us the estimate by the 30th. I was surprised with the price that he had quoted since it was just the first estimate that we got. However, I feel that the price was probably pretty much in line with others. His responsiveness, punctuality and professionalism were all excellent. I probably might use his services in the future.

Michael Baum came out to give me an estimate on a complete remodel of my bathroom. He showed up on time. He took measurements, showed me some pictures and gave me several good/practical suggestions. He took time to listen and I felt like he had a good understanding of what I wanted. He scheduled a second meeting to go over his estimate. Before our second meeting, I met with another contractor. I got caught up in the moment and signed a contract. I called Michael the next day and told him that I needed to cancel our second meeting and explained why. He was very understanding. He asked what the other bid came in at, then said I got I good price. He said that if I ran into any problems, to give him a call. I felt like he was sincere. Even though he didn't need to, he mailed me his estimate, which was a fair price, just slightly higher than the estimate I went with. He is definitely someone I would keep in mind for future projects and even though I didn't use Baum Construction, he would be someone that I would recommend if I had a friend needing work done.

I had some plumbing problems that led to a quickly needed bathroom remodel. I had only one bath/shower in my home, so I needed a very quick and efficient contractor. I met with Mike Baum of Baum Construction and we came up with a plan. I had my shower back in two weeks. This was a complete remodel with all new plumbing, tile and fixtures. I was very pleased with Mike, and his subcontractors, and most importantly the quality of the work. I would highly recommend Baum Construction & Development.
