Apiana Native Landscaping

Landscaping, Pavers and Hardscaping

About us

Apiana Native Landscaping is a landscaping company with the mission of re-introducing the native Californian plant species into residential, commercial, and agricultural/rural spaces, providing important wildlife corridors for lizards, hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies..We specialize in creating native plant habitats in southern California, whether it be restoration, conversion to drought-tolerant landscaping, agricultural insectary corridors(hedgerows)for vineyards and farms. California, as well as the rest of the world has seen our main pollinators mysteriously dying off (honeybees, native bees, parasitoid wasps (non-stinging). A native habitat will bring these pollinators, as well as hummingbirds and butterflies.

Services we offer

We rip out wasteful lawns and put in habitats of Calif. native plants. We offer consultation, design, installation, and maintenance of native habitats. California native plant communities offer such a wide scope of types of plants that most "styles" of gardening (such as japanese--zen, english cottage, etc.) can be reproduced with all natives. Apiana yards are usually made with large mounds, large boulders (sitting rocks), decomposed granite and/or flagstone paths, flagstone retaining walls.

Services we don't offer

We do not put in lawns, or non-native habitats, we do not pave or do cement work,or do landscape lighting, we don't do water features (except native ponds). We do not overplant, as that jeopardizes the whole plant community, creates incessant pruning, and generally looks really bad. If the customer needs a full-grown instant habitat, they should look elsewhere. Patience in watching your habitat pays off in knowledge, and being constantly amazed by flowers and the fauna that visit them.

Description of Work: Brady is the manager of Apiana. He has been spending time with us on our plans to redo the front yard from grass to Xeriscape with native plants. | |Brady is very knowledgeable. We asked him to do some preliminary design work for our yard which is the only work he has done for us to date. He has been very responsive to all our requests for information, has been by to see the yard and discuss the plan and has recommended others to do work when he thought they could do it cheaper or better (removing grass, pavers, etc.). | |We used one of his recommendations to remove all the grass. We need to wait until we are sure all the grass is gone, place some pavers in the yard and then Apiana (Brady) will acquire and install the chosen plants and fill in the remaining area with mulch.

Description of Work: After several left phone messages and returned calls appointment scheduled. Must say Barry did call on day of appt. to say there may be a problem getting to us and would let us know. We waited for hour and half with no-show or follow-up phone call since. Left a note on our front door saying had to leave as we had another obligation at 6'clock p.m. Husband very disappointed with this as it's a possible suggestion of how they do their work too. Sadly cannot give an overall opinion other than what stated and we will not be doing business with them in the future.

Description of Work: Spent 30 minutes teaching us about native plants (drought tolerant, etc) even though he realized five minutes into the bid opportunity he realized that although he could charge extra for the work we needed done (mainly 'demo' to get the yard clean so we could landscape on our own), it would be less expensive if we hired someone with that expertise on our own. He then gave us the name of the company he uses for the job we were looking to have done. That turned out to be a great recommendation and after interviewing six companies, we opted to use Brady's recommendation. Because of his honesty and willingness to help us do our landscaping, we will definitely call Brady if we need landscaping done in the future!

Brady bought the plants from a nursery in Solvang that had been hit with a freeze so some of the plants immediately started to die after planting. He replaced some of the plants but told me to give the others time to recover which is why I have held off writing this review. When I told him that the rest of the plants did not recover, he wanted me to pay for more plants and pay him for labor to plant them. I would not recommend this landscaper.
Description of Work: The job was to landscape my backyard including planting 132 one gallon plants.

My brand new home came without back yard landscaping. After receiving an outrageous estimate from another landscaper, I turned to Angie's List and found Apiana Native Landscaping. I met with the owner, Brady Redman, and in no time I knew he was the man for the job. For about a third of the cost, I now have a beautifully landscaped yard far better than I ever could have imagined! It feels as though I'm taking a stroll through a botanical garden or a peaceful park. Brady kept me involved in every aspect, from the design to ground covering, and even making the plant choices and selecting the type of pathways. Of all the individuals I've dealt with throughout my home-building experience, no one has been more friendly, reliable, honest, and true to his word than Brady Redman. My recommendation for Apiana Native Landscaping is unqualified.
Description of Work: Complete landscape of my entire backyard.

All scheduling and the work itself went exactly as promised, a unique occurence (in my opinion) in today's marketplace.
Description of Work: The owner of Apana, Brady Redman, is a genuine artist who also has an encyclopedic knowledge of California native plants. He first designed and installed all new landscaping in my back yard complete with a meandering gravel walk that gave me the feeling of being in a Japanese garden. About a year later he landscaped my front yard to change it from a boring flat lawn to a unique and colorful area that is both different from any other on our street yet very welcoming. In addition to all this, mt water bill has been reduced by 80%!

His name is Brady Redman. All he uses are native California plants. There won't be a gardenia in sight. It is beautiful stuff. People think they are just weeds but they are really pretty. I just ordered 5 more plants for him to put in. He's a hard working young guy. He has an incredible knowledge of plants. You can point to a shady spot and ask what you should put there. He even brought a plant that could climb a fence that was in the shade. It was exactly what I wanted. He does the work for the price that he says he will charge. You don't find very many contractors like him. He is really a very bright guy. I met him socially when he was in college and he was putting plants in his backyard then. He is also a talented artist. His artistry for putting things where they should be is great. He places things one by one and they have to be just so. I had two plants that croaked and he showed up the next day and put in 2 more. He guarantees his products. He hand sketches every plant that he is going to put in and then puts it on the computer so you can see what it is going to look like. It is really cool. He is not cheap but you can?t get the plants cheaper on the internet. The plants are all water tolerant and it cut my water bill by 60 percent.
Description of Work: I used Apiana Native Landscaping to do the backyard a year ago and he did the front yard a month ago.
