On time, on budget, done as expected. No surprises, high quality.
Description of Work: If all contractors were this good, we wouldn't need review sites. GS re-stuccoed our house, replaced some wood-siding in the process, and worked brilliantly well with our window & door contractor at the same time. In fact the window & door contractor commented on how good Golden State's workmanship was.

Description of Work: They patched the stucco around the main electrical panel replacement. Excellent job, Cesar actually matched the existing stucco pattern so it is impossible to discern the patch. This is a good company...busy though but its worth the wait.

Kirk was incredibly fair and honest about what to expect. He guided me through every decision without ever saying "no." Instead, he talked me through the pros and cons of my choices, suggesting other options where appropriate. To achieve my smooth-Tuscan look, he suggested we use Akrotique, an acrylic sealer designed to create a rustic, mottled finish similar to old plaster. Thanks to Kirk, our house now has that timeless "Old World" seen at Italian estates, except it only took him an afternoon to achieve. Thanks to Kirk's tricks and suggestions with architectural foam, he turned our gable, which looked like an underdeveloped limb, into something grand. Kirk was a regular on the job site, directing his crew and translating my dream into manageable instructions. Thanks to him, I have the look of my dreams and I couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: stuccoed the house with smooth finish stucco, to be flush with windows, applied Akrotique to achieve molted finish

Kirt Huggins, Golden State Stucco arrived at my house on time. He seemed very knowledgeable. We discussed options, how the estimate will be broken down into different alternatives. It seemed to do very well, although he did come off more as a salesman than a journeyman. We discussed how we would coordinate with other contractors that I would need to bring in. For example, a painter to paint the eves and gutters. He even said the painter that I would hire separately could use their scaffolding. When I received the bid, it was completely to the contrary. It stated, “Contractor/Homeowner may not permit any other subcontractors to use our equipment or scaffolding. If another subcontractor does use our equipment or scaffolding they will not be covered under our insurance and may be back charged.” So I guess it was just a sales pitch. An obvious disconnect between the salesman and the actual contract. But not a big deal, I could work around that. Here is some more of their fine print. “Plants, landscaping or personal items left in the work area will likely be damaged. Although we will be as careful as possible we cannot be responsible for any personal items left in work area. Please be sure to move any personal items at least 5 feet away from home to provide adequate work area. If you think plants or landscaping will require additional cover up or removal for protection, it is your responsibility to take care of these items prior to us beginning work. Often lawns, plants, fences, and rooftops can get minor stains on them from the stucco debris even after cleaning. These stains will fade some in time.“ Here is another questionable item in the fine print. “Homeowner/Contractor is responsible for investigating the necessity for obtaining any city permits pertaining to project.” Who is responsible for the permit??? Regarding the bid, it was a lot higher than I expected. Now I have worked in the construction field as a project manager, estimator, and designer for 30 years. So I do have extensive knowledge of the process and estimating. So I asked twice, two weeks apart by email, for a breakdown of the costs so I can evaluate the pricing. I never received a response. A non-responsive contractor is a show stopper for me! Another interesting note, the painting sub-contractor they recommended, never returned my call. May be there was a reason for that. My "gut feeling", Golden State Stucco will say what you want to hear, gives high bids, does not wish to discuss the costs, assuming some will take them up on the contract and they protect themselves with fine print.
Description of Work: I contacted Golden State Stucco for a cost estimate.

Response from Golden State Stucco
Dear member, After your meeting with our owner we provided you an estimate broken down six different ways. When we received your email saying we were higher than expected, it seemed that breaking out the bid further was not a productive use of time (especially considering the hours that went into preparing the original estimate). Additionally, it is not our policy to provide job costing to customers beyond the breakdown already provided. However, we should have responded to your email and communicated that to you in a timely manner. We wish you the best of luck with your home remodel project. Gina

Everything from the initial meeting, advice given on products to use, installation and follow up for minor details went well. The ladies in the office were always on the ball taking care of things like insurance certificates, estimates and billing too. The color chosen by the owner was not a standard color so it had to be custom mixed, then samples provided and approved. This took a bit more time and cost a bit more, but in the end the result looks great. The dark color was also a challenge to apply on some of the large walls during the hot weather. Kirt made sure to have enough guys on site so the whole walls were applied wet to ensure good color consistency. Any concerns we had on any spotty areas, or additional patching as we remodeled, were quickly addressed to the owner's satisfaction. All good in the end. Would definitely recommend and hire Golden State Stucco again.
Description of Work: As a subcontractor, Kirt & crew patched some existing stucco for some replacement windows. Next they skim coated the whole house with acrylic color coat to smooth out the existing 70's vintage textured stucco and provide a permanent color.

We needed an area where a service door used to be patched with stucco to match the current home stucco. We were able to get a quote and have the patch completed within one week. The two tradesmen showed up at the promised time, finished in the promised two hour job time and cleaned up before they left. The patch looks great.

The workmen were always on time and ready to go to work . They were courteous and ready to answer any questions I had. They never had an "attitude". They cleaned up after themselves. If I had any concerns/suggestions, they were helpful and would correct/do what I asked of them without hesitation. They were all skilled at what they were doing. My house looks like a new house! I have had many bad experiences in the past with other contractors, workmen. I can truly say this has been the most positive experience I've had. I would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: To begin with they supplied me with 4 different quotes and the amount it would cost since I wasn't sure if I could pay for all I wanted done. They were more than willing to furnish me with the quotes. I was given all the information about the stucco work and what it would entail. I was encouraged to ask any questions. He provided me with samples of the stucco work and samples of the colors. Kirt showed up on a regular basis to check on how the job was going and to clear up any problems that may have occurred. Their Project Coordinator was a joy to work with. She was clearly knowledgeable about the stucco business and kept me informed about the next step.

I left a message on Friday but they had closed at noon. A woman returned the call on Monday and informed me the company does not do masonry work. They do stucco work. She was nice enough to ask what I needed and suggested that I look for companies that do concrete work and concrete repair.
Description of Work: I called for an estimate to remove 8 bricks (3 whole bricks and 5 pieces) that were in the way of replacing fence posts. I wanted the bricks removed without damage so they could be put back after the posts were installed.

Kirt, Cynthia and team have been absolutely fantastic to work with. We had interviewed a number of different stucco experts and Kirt was the first one who could answer the tough questions on how to fix some problems that were unique on our house. He spent a great deal of time educating us on our options, what to expect during the process and the end result. Kirt is patient, detail oriented and really committed that his clients are truly satisfied with the end result. He communicates all along the way to make sure we were on the same page, he has a great sense of humor and was a delight to have around. Cynthia, who is the Project Coordinator, was always pleasant, accommodating and understanding. Due to rain and the discovery of structural damage, our project started and stopped a number of times and she graciously juggled us in between all their other work. Kirt’s crew – Danny, Lorenzo, Gonzales, Tony just to name a few, are hard working, trustworthy and loyal to Kirt. They too were a delight to have around, they were courteous and respectful and given they were here so much; it really made a tremendous difference to have such a great group of guys on site. Towards the end of our job we encountered an unexpected problem and Kirt came out again and came up with a great solution – the end result of which, made the whole area look much better – he really saved us. We cannot say enough about Kirt and Golden State Stucco. We would hire them again in a minute and we would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Kirt and team took all the stucco off our entire house, re-waterproofed and chicken-wired the entire house, met with the window installer to ensure the windows and stucco would be watertight, applied the scratch coat, brown coat and acrylic stucco by hand to the house. He also introduced us to a general contractor who was able to do framing repairs and install outdoor light boxes, electrical boxes and new vents.

Kirt was friendly and professional. In his initial walk around the property, he noted many details that other contractors had missed. The work was done carefully and we're very happy with the finished look. Kirt did not nit-pick details, like when we asked him to shape the corners differently than their default, and when we decided to put up decorative tile instead of standard foam trim (actually, he suggested the tile). The only minor complaint we have is that on the first visit, he promised to chip away a small section of concrete that slopes towards the house, and in spite of repeated reminders this was never done. We'll probably end up spending $70 to rent a jackhammer and a couple of hours to do it ourselves, and the job would have been easier before the flashing and stucco were in place. However, if we had another house that needed stucco, we'd call Kirt again.
